Letter From the Board President & ED Literacy Green Bay is proud of its diverse, talented and committed Board of Directors. Our Board of Directors meet on the first Wednesday of the month. Board members may serve for two consecutive three year terms.

Dear Friends, Thank you! Since our establishment in 1981, Literacy Green Bay, Inc. has been changing lives every day. Hundreds of students have benefited from educational programs made possible by you- our generous donors, funders, volunteers and partners. We are grateful for your support of our important work.

This annual report showcases Literacy Green Bay’s broad range of achievements and we are pleased to share them with you. You’ll read that LGB helped over 700 adult learners to read, write and speak in English so that they were better able to achieve personal and financial independence and greater involvement in our community; over 300 volunteers helped as trained literacy tutors, class instructors and board members; and the 13th Annual Scrabble Bee, our annual major fundraiser, raised $44,000 to support adult and family literacy programs in Brown County.

You are invited to explore these and many more examples included in this report that demonstrate how Literacy Green Bay, in alignment with its mission, vision, goals and core values, is meeting the needs of adult learners and their families.

In 2016, Literacy Green Bay celebrates 35 years. Dear Friends,

Thank you for reading our first published annual report! You are one of the lucky ones--- you CAN READ this. Unbelievably, there are approximately 36 million adults in the United States who can’t read better than the average third grader, and sadly, only about 3 million of them will be able to access programs to receive help. What is even more alarming is that 14% of the adult population in Brown County is estimated to have less than a high school education and lack a high school diploma. (US Census American Factfinder) This crisis is happening here and now.

We know that low skills or a lack of high school education will translate to poverty for many adults and families. We believe that we can break the cycle of poverty by breaking the cycle of illiteracy. This is our mission: to help adults and families acquire the basic skills that they need to become self-sufficient and productive community members. We accomplish this by providing several programs in different formats in order to accommodate our learners’ varied abilities, instructional needs and busy schedules.

Learner Information Literacy Green Bay serves some of the neediest families in Brown County. Our services are targeted to families who are both educationally and economically disadvantaged.

• We served 785 individuals in 2014-2015.

• We enrolled 307 new adult learners in programming in 2014-2015.

• 111 adult learners exited our programs during 2014-2015.

• Word of mouth is #1 source of referral.

According to exit surveys, 100% of our adult learners have recommended or would recommend our programming to our learners.

Volunteer Information

Annually, Literacy Green Bay utilizes the time and talent of over 350 volunteers, primarily as adult tutors, but also as child tutors, classroom teaching assistants, tutor trainers, student evaluators, childcare assistants, Board members and office volunteers. Tutor training workshops are held quarterly to recruit and train new volunteers as tutors. Literacy Green Bay also works with area colleges in providing internships and service learning opportunities for students enrolled at St. Norbert College, Northeast Wisconsin Technical College and University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. Many area high school students volunteer as tutors in our child tutoring program.

Highlights & Awards

What a year! Literacy Green Bay was recognized twice for its excellence as a non-profit.

Ethics in Business Literacy Green Bay was the non-profit recipient of the 2014 Ethic in Business Award presented by American Foundation of Counseling Services in recognition of its commitment to providing literacy services with attention on fairness, respect, accountability and a pursuit of excellence.

Excellence in Non-Profit Leadership Executive Director Kathy Cornell was the recipient of the 2014 Excellence in Non-Profit Leadership presented by Brown County United Way. This award honors a professional staff person in the field of human services who has demonstrated extraordinary leadership, initiative, and management skills.

Annual Breakfast The 2nd Annual Award & Appreciation Breakfast hosted by the Board of Directors is designed to show appreciation to our donors and supporters while showcasing the extraordinary work of our volunteers, supporters and learners. Eight awards are presented to our dedicated partners, supporters, volunteers and students. During the program, one of our learners who recently became a US citizen, Tomoko Cavagna, read her essay on “What It Means to Me to Be a US Citizen.”

The Literacy Partnership Award honors an agency, corporation, business, or foundation that partners with Literacy Green Bay to advance our mission. The 2015 Recipient is the Brown County United Way. The Irene Daniell Kress Literacy Advocate Award, named in honor of Irene Daniell Kress, a local supporter and advocate for adult literacy, honors an individual, company, or institution that promotes literacy in our community. The 2015 Recipient is Lynn Mullins.

The Lifetime of Literacy Award honors an individual (volunteer, staff member or advocate) who has been directly involved with the work of Literacy Green Bay for 20 years or more. The 2015 recipient is Cindy Volz, our Level 1 ELL instructor.

The Literacy Green Bay Evie Jensen Spirit Award recognizes the joyful and compassionate spirit of our late friend and the first employee of Literacy Green Bay, Evie Jensen. This year the award goes to Maria Guadalupe Garcia, an early childhood teacher with our family literacy programming since 2001.

The Child Tutor of the Year Award honors a young adult who demonstrates a commitment to the Child Tutoring program and its children, and has accumulated over 50 volunteer hours. Kaitlyn Holzer, our 2015 recipient, volunteered over 175 hours as an East High School student.

The Outstanding Adult Learner of the Year Award honors an adult learner within our Tutoring Program in recognition of significant achievements as a result of increased literacy. The 2015 recipient is Zuita Romero who was promoted to a supervisor as a result of increased skills.

The Outstanding English Language Learner of the Year Award recognizes the achievements made by an English Language Learner who is currently enrolled or who began in our ELL classes. This year’s recipient is Fouad Moussaif.

The Outstanding Children First Family Literacy Graduate Award honors a GED graduate from our Children First Family Literacy program who has transitioned into post-secondary schooling, obtained better employment or has been a positive role model for fellow classmates. This year’s recipient, Maria Tabares Haro, is now enrolled at NWTC in the Health Care Customer Service Certificate program.

13th Annual Scrabble Bee

2015 Scrabble Bee Champions 1st place = Nicolet National Bank 2nd place = NWTC 3rd place = Wipfli Our Bee was held February 26, 2015 at the Swan Club in DePere.

• Over 250 people enjoyed a fun night of Scrabble with a twist.

• Lisa Malak of WFRV-TV Local 5 Live was the evening’s emcee.

• Event included dinner, auctions, and raffles.

• Over $44,000 was raised to support adult and family literacy programs in Brown County.

• Champions take home the Traveling Scrabble Bee trophy and bragging rights.

Adult Tutoring Program

Literacy Green Bay matches adult learners with volunteer tutors to work together one-on-one. Tutoring pairs meet weekly to work toward learners’ individual goals. Curriculum and support is provided by Literacy Green Bay to assist matches to meet those goals. Adult learners are reassessed after 50 hours of instruction to measure their progress. Approximately 85% of our learners are improving their English skills, while the other 15% are those who struggled in school and need to improve basic skills or obtain a GED. Since my mother has died, my sister, my daughter and friends help me. I have been working with my tutor, Les, since November of 2009. My tutor has me starting to read books and we are reading the weekly stock car racing column out of the newspaper. I want to keep working on my reading. I would like to get my GED someday so that it is easier for me to get a job.”

English Language Learner Classes Literacy Green Bay offers three levels of English Language Learner (ELL) classes, taught by experienced instructors, both mornings and evenings, at Literacy Green Bay and at the Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Center. Childcare is available for learners enrolled in most classes. Students are placed into classes depending on their levels of oral English language proficiency. Students are reassessed at end of each semester to measure progress. After Level 3, students transition to NWTC or continue their studies with a tutor. Over 350 students attend our ELL classes annually to improve their English skills.

Meet Hussein: Hussein had lived in Green Bay for less than a year when he took advantage of many of the resources the community has to offer. He attends English classes four hours a week at Literacy Green Bay while enrolled in a college home healthcare certification program. Hussein hopes his education will lead to a job he enjoys and a steady income to provide for his family. Life has not always been full of opportunity for Hussein. In 1999, he was forced to leave his home in Somalia, escaping from war and violence. He arrived in South Africa with few belongings and little money. Hussein earned his living selling goods to tourists on the street. After three years, Hussein saved enough money to open his own shop in the village. He ran a successful business for many years until one night thieves entered his shop, stole his money and left him beaten. This devastating experience did not stop Hussein. He applied with the United Nations to gain refuge in another country.

After waiting two years, Hussein, his wife and their five children were on their way to the United States.

Hussein is thankful for his new life in Green Bay. In South Africa, he worried about his children. Now he is proud that his children are attending school and learning to read and write. Hussein is excited about his own learning as well. The English he has learned in our classes has helped him to communicate at the store, at the doctor’s office and at his children’s school. He says that without English you cannot have a successful life in the United States. Hussein believes anything is possible and he looks forward to a promising future for his family in Green Bay.

Children First Family Literacy

Literacy Green Bay and its collaborative partners, NWTC and the YWCA of Greater Green Bay, offer the only comprehensive family literacy program in the area — the Children First Family Literacy program. Adults are enrolled in GED instruction Monday through Wednesday, morning or evening, while their young children attend early childhood programming. Computer skills instruction, Parenting instruction and PACT (Parent And Child Together) activities are the other components of this program. Our goal is to break the cycle of illiteracy by addressing the literacy needs of both the parents and children together while students are reassessed at end of each semester to measure progress.

Meet Esperanza:

In 1992, Esperanza Reyes’ father started the paperwork for her whole family to get visas to come to Green Bay. This was a surprise to the family because he didn’t tell anyone. Seven years later, when Esperanza was 18 years old, her family arrived in Green Bay. She found out about Literacy Green Bay from her brother who told her that she could go to school to learn English. “Literacy Green Bay has been helping me since the beginning because I knew nothing about the English language. In 2002, I started at the first level of ELL classes; then after 2 years, I got a tutor. My tutor, Joanne, helped me improve how to read, write and talk English. She also helped me study for the citizenship test.” After several years of studying with her tutor, getting married, and having three children, Esperanza’s hard work has paid off. In 2014, she enrolled in the Children First Family Literacy program.

As a participant in this program, she is well on her way to earning her GED and her children are getting a jump start on school. Esperanza’s dream is to work as an accountant for a store, bank, or medium-sized company. To achieve this, she is attending the NWTC Career Pathways Bridge Accounting Assistant program in addition to studying with Children First Family Literacy.

She’s able to study for her accounting degree at the same time as her GED so when she graduates, she’ll be able to find work right away.

Child Tutoring Literacy Green Bay also provides remedial and homework assistance for children of our adult learners. While parents are attending class or meeting with their tutors, their children (grades first through fifth) may receive help from our Child Tutors.

These high school, college, and adult volunteers spend quality time with the children in homework completion, recreational reading and literacy enrichment activities and games. Our parents appreciate this program since many would not have the language skills to assist their children themselves.

Meet Lizzie: Lizzie began as a Child Tutor in September 2012 as a freshman in high school. Since then, she has accumulated over 125 tutoring hours. She recently graduated from Notre Dame Academy. As A Child Tutor, Lizzie was very effective at getting the children to settle down and complete their homework and their reading assignments when they first arrive. She appropriately responds to their homework questions and practices good reading comprehension and fluency strategies with the children.

When homework is completed, Lizzie makes sure every child participates in group or individual activities instead of just waiting for class to be over. Lizzie says, “Slogging through homework is never fun but hanging out and interacting with the kids is always fun.” Lizzie plans to major in Foreign Language. Along with 5 years of French, courses, she has also taken Mandarin and was tutored privately in Japanese. Lizzie hopes to attend Lewis and Clark University in Portland. We wish Lizzie the best in her future endeavors and we are very fortunate for her years of service to our first through fifth graders.

Why I Support Literacy Green Bay I’m an advocate for Literacy Green Bay for several reasons. I believe there is no better way for individuals to help themselves improve their lives than through increased knowledge, skills and education.

Literacy Green Bay is an entity that is focused on solving the educational and literacy gap for individuals who are impoverished. By assisting individuals and families to overcome these literacy deficiencies, their lives, and hence the lives of all of us in our community, improve. The organization addresses and seeks to eliminate poverty and dependence through education, skill development and individual empowerment.

I volunteer my time and make monetary donations to Literacy Green Bay as I believe in the mission of the organization, and because I have seen the results of the organization through the individuals and families they have, and continue to, assist.

The professional staff and executive director of LGB continue to seek ways to further improve their programming and organizational efficiency so that their services are available for a growing number of people seeking and needing their services.

I am a proud donor for Literacy Green Bay, and I encourage others to become advocates and donors as well.
