General Information Health Walks have been set up to encourage groups and individuals to make walking a regular part of their lives.

Walking can help and/or prevent conditions such as coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and arthritis. Regular walks can also help combat depression, loneliness and weight problems.

As well as being a great way to exercise, the walks are an excellent way of meeting others.

• All of our walks are completely FREE • We have four weekly walks across Central Northumberland, leaving from Ashington, Morpeth, Newbiggin and Widdrington Station.

You can walk with as many groups as you like.

• Each walk is roughly two to three miles long, will take about two hours and may include some ascents and descents.

• The walks are led by trained volunteers who are there to help you but please understand that you undertake the walk at your own risk.

• The walk leaders may have to change the planned route at the last minute depending on weather conditions.

• If sufficient shared transport is not available for car walks, a local walk will take place instead.

Drivers would appreciate a £1.00 contribution towards petrol. You don’t need a car to take part.

• Only assistance dogs are allowed on the walks.

New Walkers There is no need to book, just turn up wearing appropriate outdoor clothing including boots or supportive shoes with a good grip. It is a good idea to carry a supply of water, plus some small change as some groups go for a cup of coffee after the walk.

You will be asked to fill in a simple health questionnaire prior to your first walk.

Please do not ever leave the group without informing the leader or back marker; if you are feeling unwell please inform one of them.

Longer/Other Walks If you are interested in other/longer walks, here are some groups to contact.

Morpeth Heritage Walks The walks are between four and five and a half miles in length and take place at 12.30pm every Thursday. They usually feature a site of heritage interest within 20 miles of Morpeth. Meet at the Elliot Bridge (near the Riverside Leisure Centre, Morpeth) A longer all day eight to eleven mile walk at three weekly intervals on a Friday over the summer period, takes the group further afield in Northumberland.

Newbiggin by the Sea Art Trail Walk/Talk with KEAP Creative Periodic guided group walks of up to two hours.

Newbiggin Ramblers A club dedicated to walking in Northumberland and Durham. Walks are organised on a rotating basis (Monday to Friday) and are at two weeks plus one day intervals and five to nine miles long.

Business meetings are held on the first Monday of each month (unless that Monday is a holiday) in the Bank House Social Club at 11am.

Ashington Walks Walks take place every Wednesday, meeting time 10.00am. The planned location of the walks is shown overleaf, although the meeting point for ALL walks is Age UK Building, The Round House, Lintonville Parkway, Ashington.

Please see timetable for walk details. n.b: due to limited places, Watbus trips are only open to walkers who attend Newbiggin walks on a regular basis.

Widdrington Walks Walks take place on Thursday afternoons. Meet 1.00pm at Area Training & Activity Centre (ATAC), David Mather House, Mile Road, Widdrington Station, Northumberland. Walks are on average three to four miles long, at a leisurely pace. Widdrington welcomes new members; simply turn up at the ATAC building a little before 1.00pm and join us for a walk!

Please note: The group operate via a car sharing scheme and charges £2, towards community centre funds.

Ashington Woods - Nordic Walking Regular sessions run on Saturday mornings at 10.00am; at a cost of £2.50. Booking is essential.

Poles are provided.
