Welcome to West Northumberland Health Walks. Come and join us!

Health walks Health walks have been set up to encourage groups and individuals to make walking a regular part of their lives.

Meet outside Co-op every Thursday at 10:00am *Suitable for beginners and those not able to do the full hour.

Walking can help and/or prevent high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and arthritis. Regular walks can also help combat depression, loneliness and weight problems. As well as being a great way to exercise, the walks are an excellent way of meeting others.

If sufficient shared transport is not available for car walks, a local walk will take place instead. Drivers would appreciate a contribution towards fuel. You don’t need a car to take part.

Only assistance dogs are allowed on the walks.

Grades of walks

1 - Suitable for those who have not walked before and are looking to be more active. Walks are up to 30 minutes on flat ground or gentle slopes with mainly firm surfaces and no steps or stiles.

Walkers for Grade 1 walks will start with the group and have a dedicated leader to accompany them at their own pace and lead them back to the starting point.

2 - Suitable for people who are looking to increase their activity levels.

Between 30 and 60 minutes, these walks may include some moderate slopes, steps, stiles and uneven surfaces.

Meet outside The Rose And Crown every Wednesday at 10:30am *Suitable for beginners and those not able to do a full hour.

We have eight weekly walks in West Northumberland, leaving from Allendale, Bellingham, Corbridge, Haltwhistle, Hexham, Prudhoe, Stocksfield and Wark. You can walk with as many groups as you like.

Each walk will take between one and one and a half hours and may include some ascents and descents.

Some groups have extended walks in addition to their usual walks.

The walks are led by trained volunteers who are there to help you but please understand that you undertake the walk at your own risk.

The walk leaders may have to change the planned route at the last minute depending on weather conditions.

There is no need to book, just turn up wearing appropriate outdoor clothing including boots or supportive shoes with grip. It is a good idea to carry a supply of water, plus some small change for a hot drink after the walk.
