YMCA GREATER RICHMOND Look-Book June 2023 Abstract Headshots and brief bios of Key Leaders

My name is Mell Adams, and I am currently the Director of Business Operations and Data Analytics for YGR. I am a graduate of the University of North Carolina and have worked for the YMCA for almost thirteen years. My passion and excitement for the YMCA is driven by the many opportunities to help our organization achieve its desired results through systems and processes that support our work to strengthen the foundations of the communities we serve.

I have a diverse background and have worked in other industries prior to my time at the YMCA. I understand the changing nature of business operations and my flexibility allows me to adapt quickly and problem solve to ensure both the YMCA and the customers’ goals are achieved. During my time in other industries and the YMCA I have excelled in developing industry expertise and success in each of them. From logistics software and hardware to surgical lasers and laser physics to working for the YMCA in various roles and facets of the business. In my current role I manage business operations, oversee the YES center, drive change through project management, and oversee five software and CRM platforms to help ensure a streamlined and efficient customer experience is achieved. With many of the roles I have held, another essential component of my success has been the ability to perform thorough market analysis and forecasting. That work has allowed me to develop and sharpen my reporting, analysis, and succinct communication skills. I believe I have a well-rounded background and set of skills and do my best to use them to support our Association.

I look forward to meeting you soon and continuing the work of driving our Association forward with your leadership, vision, and direction.

My name is Ginnina Eakle and I am the Association Director of Wellness. I grew up in West Virginia, have lived in Mechanicsville for the past 20 years. My husband and I have two boys that are both very active in volleyball, basketball and lacrosse. Next year, my youngest will start high school and my oldest will be attending Virginia Tech.

I started my career as a business and instructional technology teacher, but soon realized the YMCA was the place I was meant to be. I started at the Y as a group exercise instructor in 2012 and have been given opportunities to expand my role over the past 11 years. While most of my time has been with the wellness department, I have also had experiences in youth sports and philanthropy.

Working in the wellness department is incredibly rewarding. I feel such a sense of pride when our members share they have accomplished a new PR or their doctor has praised them for lowering their A1C. Health and well-being is often times my focus, but building relationships and helping our members feel a sense of community is hands down the most important part of my job at the Y.

Chrissy Fandel proudly serves the YMCA of Greater Richmond as our Association Aquatic Director, or SME of Aquatics.

I love the magic involved with seeing someone learn how to swim and become safer in and around the water. I enjoy working with teens and adults navigating their first professional jobs/careers. It has been a joy to see those who started as program participants grow into lifeguards and then aquatic leaders. I enjoy team building, brainstorming, dreaming, training, asking questions, and leading and coaching others. I am excited for the team that we have been rebuilding since the pandemic. Aquatics needs layers of support, with structures in place to be successful; and that is something I am extremely passional about pushing and protecting my directors while we re-build the aquatic workforce to be able to do and serve more communities and people!

I grew up locally here in Glen Allen, VA and my family joined the Shady Grove YMCA when it first opened--we joined the swim team, and I swam there during my high school years. I then began working as a lifeguard, swim instructor, swim team coach and birthday party host while obtaining my BA in English, with a Minor in Creative Writing from VCU from 2005 to 2007. I serve our local YPN Chapter 25 as a Board Member and annual Spring Conference Committee Member having championed EAF and Peer Communities. I am the co-creator of the RVA Aquatic Professionals Network comprised of local aquatic management and recreational organizations to strengthen relationships and water safety in Richmond, VA. I have been awarded several opportunities to work with YUSA’s drowning prevention and program development cohorts including: the 2019 Diverse Abilities Aquatic Pilot program; the 2020-2023 Drowning Prevention Thought Leader Cohort; 2022 and 2023 CDC Swimming Skills Intervention Grant Program with focused work on Teen/Adult programing in 2021-2022; VADH 2022 Aquatic Development and Swim Lessons Sub Grant from a federal funding opportunity to certify 20 lifeguard and teach 200 youth how to swim; the Strategic Initiatives Fund 2023 Communities Engagement Swimming Lesson Grant; and we have just been selected to participate in the Aquatic Safety Assessment Pilot with YUSA for this summer!

Some other fun facts about me: I love to spend time with my family-I have three nieces and three nephews that I simply adore and love to spoil. I enjoy traveling especially to the beach, OBX is my happy place. My husband and I are new puppy parents –our sweet Labradoodle, Charlie “Charleston Chew” is now seven months-old; and we are still working on his manners. (So far, he can ‘sit’, ‘shake,’ ‘lay-down,’ and ‘wave’! We are working on mastering ‘wait’ and ‘come here!’) I am a HUGE Dave Matthews Band fan and will be seeing the band three times this summer! I finally made it to the Gorge last year, which was amazing and a bucket list item of mine! (YAY!)

ABOUT MYSELF

Through almost 20 years of higher education and nonprofit experience with world-renowned universities and international charitable organizations, I am a season development professional and accomplished relationship builder with excellent communication skills guided by strategic focus. As a result, I have a track record that spans over 15 years with successful fundraising campaigns, major gift work, and corporate partnerships.

WORK EXPERIENCE

I joined the YMCA of Greater Richmond in July 2019 as a Senior Director of Development tasked with three of our branches building their annual giving strategy. In the past four years we have seen tremendous growth in both dollars raised and the sophistication of our overall fundraising approach. Through COVID-19 our team successfully brought our donors closer to the organization, resulting in more robust relationships and stronger connections.

In August 2021, I was promoted to the Association Director of Major Gifts, overseeing a team of Senior Directors of Development to enhance and grow our Major Gifts pipeline and strengthen our capital campaign at Tuckahoe as we were finalizing a $6M campaign towards a $9.2M renovation project that was stalled in COVID-19. I now directly work with 6 of our branches on their annual giving in addition to the Association Resource Center with oversight through Sr. Directors to all other branches.

Prior to the YMCA I primarily worked in higher education, with over 10 years at Cornell University and 3 years at UVA.

Development work is a crucial component to the organizations in which I have worked and is how I drive my passion for the mission.

PERSONAL

While I was born in Virginia, I spent 23 years in Upstate NY, where I started my pursuit in higher learning and began my family. 10 years ago I moved down to Richmond, where I live on the West End with my three children: Natalie (19), Hunter (10) and Charlotte (8), my partner, Matt, and our lovable, dopey silver lab, Rembrandt (3). Natalie returned to the frozen north and just completed her freshman year at Cornell. She will spend this summer working at the Y camps. We enjoy lots of outdoor activities like camping, hiking and the beach, in addition to trying new recipes utilizing the ingredients we have grown in our garden of fruit trees and vegetables.
