In these worrying times and, especially following the last two tumultuous years, many have re-connected with the great outdoors for solace and calm. So, for the majority that have returned to their treadmill routine, physical reminders might provide a source of tranquility as well as pleasure. After all walls painted green have been shown to elevate the mood of the onlooker.Itis worth emphasising that in the era of sustainability and concerns over pollution and seas of plastic and refuse, the beauty of antiques and vintage works is that they are the perfect antidote to the disease that is our ‘throw-away’ society. Furthermore, not everything in the art/antique world is solely about aesthetics. One can combine visual appeal with usefulness, such as the clocks in this sale. One has been working for nearly 300 years, providing a succession of owners with not only the time and date, but also one of twelve tunes if so desired; the 18th century equivalent of Sonos; albeit a very modest selection by comparison (lotWhatever225). attracts the buyer, there is one unifying factor for all and that is the object in question fulfils a need, whatever that might be. So, whether it is one of the many fine pieces of jewellery, or a piece of pottery or porcelain you can make the choice safe in the knowledge that there is no ‘carbon footprint’ for the piece concerned, the cost would be far less than a modern equivalent and, like good summer weather, it will brighten one’s life.

Continuinggarden.thebotanical theme and, perish the thought, should al fresco be ‘off the menu’, why not focus on one’s interior and bring the outside into the home. Amongst a private collection of good quality rugs and carpets there is a Kashan example, decorated with the tree of life (lot 249). In the silver section there is an impressive model of the ‘Warwick Vase’ (lot 13) that is relief moulded with Bacchic heads and fruiting vines. The much larger original urn had been in the garden belonging to the emperor Hadrian. Moving from flora to fauna there is a collection of ornithological works by the New Zealand artist Ray Harris-Ching and a collection of taxidermy. It may surprise readers to learn that there is a very strong market for good taxidermy, by top makers, such as Rowland Ward, J.Hutchings of Aberystwyth, Peter Spicer and van Ingen and Ingen. It is a field that has been fashionable for some time and, though not to everyone’s taste, the wackier the better. For instance, the Victorian, Walter Potter’s anthropomorphic tableaux are keenly contested at auction. There are no examples of the latter, but there is a group of Widgeon by B.Cook, of Liverpool, a sitka stag’s head by Murray & Son of Carnforth, an eccentric elephant’s foot decanter stand and an eye catching ostrich! (lots:- 221, 220, 223 and 216).
Summer
HAS ARRIVED
Gerry Berwyn-Jones Head of Fine Art
By the time you read this summer will have arrived and spirits, along with all things green, will be rising and brightening. On the theme of the most popular season in the British calendar, given we have a decent amount of sunshine, there are two super pairs of urns in our sale. There are a nice pair of 75cm high (2.5 feet for those with elephantine memories) cast iron urns (lot 252) and a pair of campana urns with smart pedestals, standing an impressive 140cm high (about 4.5 feet; lot 251). One of the former even comes with saxifrage! Interestingly, and unusually, one of the Chinese works of art has a strong link with gardens, in that it is a model of a ship, complete with trees (with blue enamelled leaves), flowers and pavilions on its large flat deck. This was inspired by a Chinese emperor’s antipathy to sea travel. Consequently, to make his ships look more like home he instructed his retinue to transform the decks into a palatial

PATINATED GREEN GLASS BOTTLE early 18th century of onion shape, with a deep kick to the base and a double line-strung lip to the mouth, 15cm high. Provenance: This bottle was found hidden in a cellar by the occupants of Old Idsall House in Shifnal. The cellar, which was previously unknown to the occupants, was found during routine building work near the back door of the property. Signs of an original foundation prompted further investigation and revealed a cellar complete with an intact set of shelves holding three sealed onion bottles. Sadly, however, the original contents and seals did not survive the bottles being cleaned soon after their discovery. Old Idsall House is believed to be the oldest property in Shifnal, with elements dating back to the 16th century. From around 1760, it was also run as Shifnal’s first Post Office by Thomas Sambrook. £100-150

During his time in captivity, Antar fell in love with Abla, the daughter of King Zoheir, but was initially refused marriage by her father on the basis of his origins and the colour of his skin. Despite this prejudice, he went on to prove himself numerous times in combat and chivalry and it was these acts that eventually won both his freedom and Abla’s hand in marriage. Sadly, he was by a poisoned arrow killed during an excursion to escort the 1,000 camels which would have acted as the final gift in order to seal the marriage and as such, he never got to marry the one he loved. £800-1,000

LARGE AND UNUSUAL CHINESE ENAMELLED SILVER MODEL OF A SHIP
Believed 19th century, modelled as a broad vessel with flat deck, populated by trees with blue enamelled leaves and silk flowers, along with pavilions and structures such to resemble a palatial garden, an obelisk to the stern surmounted by a figure inscribed 故油軍上将程公壁光肖像, possibly translating as ‘Portrait of General Cheng Gong’, set into a hardwood base, 59cm long x 33cm high.

By repute, its construction records a fable, or possible history, of an emperor who disliked sea travel and so when called upon to venture to another country, had a vessel made to resemble land as closely as possible. The figure seemingly identified as ‘General Cheng Gong’ may refer to Chen Gong (d.199), a Han Dynasty warlord who served under Cao Cao and Lu Bu. The story of the ship resembling land may be derived from the practice of chaining ships together to mitigate seasickness in troops during campaigns, a method employed by Cao Cao in the Battle of the Red Cliffs (208-209AD), although this was several years after Chen Gong’s execution. £3,000-5,000

101 Taprell, Holland & Son traded from 1835 until 1843 and was registered at 19 Mary-le-bone Street from 1817-1851. Not much is known about Stephen Taprell, the senior partner, but there was a family connection with William and Henry Holland, the Regency architect. By 1824 Taprell and Holland were highly regarded and this led to their first well known commission, the Athenaeum (1824-38). Up until 1840 they supplied furniture to Arundel Castle, Harewood House, Ickworth and 7 clubs. William Holland took over the company in 1843. This firm became one of the best furnishing companies of the Victorian era.

IMPORTANT NOTICE
110 CARRIAGE & PACKING
The International Jewellery Trade generally accept these methods. It is not possible for Halls to obtain gemmological reports on all stones offered for sale and therefore all Halls Holding’s estimates assume that gemstones have been enhanced.
Prospective buyers should be aware that general wear to include; creasing, light foxing, small tears, bumped corners, worn boards or weak spine/joints, will not be specified in the catalogue descriptions. Any substantial losses/wear to include detached boards, detached spines or extensive graffiti will be described as ‘at fault’.
IMPORTANT NOTICE TO JEWELLERY BUYERS
IMPORTANT NOTICE TO BOOK BUYERS
Prospective buyers please note that lots marked with ◉ may be subject to VAT on the hammer price. Prospective buyers should note that although every effort is made to note repairs, restoration and damage in the catalogue descriptions, a lack of any such note should not be taken to imply that the lot is in perfect condition.
Prospective buyers please note that we do not guarantee amber as being naturally formed and all or parts may be reconstituted. The colour of the amber may vary from the catalogue or online illustration.
Prospective buyers are reminded that coloured gemstones have historically been treated to enhance their appearance. A variety of methods have been, and are currently used to improve both transparency and colour of various gemstones.
Halls Fine Art are a small team so unfortunately has neither the staff, nor the facilities to provide a comprehensive packaging service, meeting buyer's or carriers’ various stipulations regarding box sizes and materials. Consequently, Halls will not package items for collection by third parties.Buyers that engage the services of companies that do not fulfill these criteria will be asked to email or write to Halls stating that they, the client, do so entirely at their own risk and take full responsibility for their choice. For further information, please email fineartpayments@hallsgb.com or call 01743 450700
Although every effort is made to note damage and restoration, the absence of such information does not imply that the lot is free from defects.
Prospective buyers must satisfy themselves with a condition report prior to bidding, Halls Holdings can take no responsibility for condition of purchased lots if condition reports were not requested.
All yellow and white metals have not been tested.
Detailed condition reports and email images can be obtained on request until 4.30pm the day prior to the sale.
What payment methods can I use?
You can pay with cash (up to £8,000), debit cards, direct bank transfer or a personal cheque. We regret that we do not accept payment by credit card. Cheques should be made payable to Halls Holdings Ltd
What is buyer’s premium? All UK auctioneers charge a premium in addition to the hammer price. Halls’ Buyer’s Premium is 20% plus VAT for the first £500,000 and 12% above £500,000 per lot
You can ask for further details and extra images about any lots in our sales and this is especially important if you cannot view the lot in person. We don’t detail condition in our catalogue descriptions and so recommend asking for a condition report and additional images. Our reports provide a general guide to the condition of a lot but are not a forensic examination and so a physical inspection by you or an appointed agent is ideal.

All our clients need to provide photo ID and proof of name and address by providing the following: a government issued form of photo identification (plastic card element of a driving licence, or proofpassport)ofaddress such as a bank statement or utility bill, dated within the last 3 months
