ecent figures from the Automobile Research and Testing Center (ARTC) have shown that the heart of the motorcycle manufacturing industry worldwide is currently Asia, with the majority of the Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) for the two-wheeled vehicle based specifically here in Taiwan. This is a direct result of 50 years of experience since the industry was first introduced to Taiwan back in 1962. Following years of manufacturing parts for foreign countries such as Japan and various countries in Europe and America, Taiwan has developed excellent skills and technologies to establish a strong export market for motorcycles and the respective parts with a name on its own, establishing two strong international conglomerates, Kwang Yang Motor and Sanyang Industry. With the expertise local engineers have gained alongside their Japanese partners, such as Yamaha and Suzuki, through countless research & development, Taiwanese motorcycles have been proven to be both extremely high in quality and cost effective over other countries in Southeast Asia. Hence, the renowned craftsmanship of Taiwan has allowed locally manufactured scooters and OEM parts to be exported globally, with Japan as the major importer followed by various countries in Europe and America. With numerous parts manufactured locally, the percentage of Taiwanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s productivity in motorcycle construction from scratch to competition is as high as 90 percent, which drastically increases product control and quality.

Taiwan: The Heart of Motorcycle Manufacturing Exports of Taiwan-made scooters have grown exponentially due to the World Trade Organization implementing new regulations for the ease of vehicle import and export, as well as the drop in tariff. Taiwan is also responsible for gear production and local assemblies, exporting close to 500,000 scooters internationally, with Japan alone accounting for over 36 percent of the manufacturing market in 2013 and 24 percent in Europe as the use of scooters is relatively high in selective European countries such as Italy and Spain. Since scooters are also largely manufactured in South America, along with low demand for the vehicle in automobile-oriented North America, exports to the continent occupy the market at 13.5 percent. However, OEM parts from Taiwan make up the majority of American-made motorcycles and scooters. As noted by the Taiwan Transportation

Vehicle Manufacturers Association (TTVMA), the total growth in percentage of both export and import in the first six months of 2013 alone has risen to 4.33 percent. Currently, with the frequent advancement in both wealth and technology of Middle Eastern countries, the export of Taiwanese motorcycles has expanded to such countries, with Iraq as the nation with the highest demand, providing a 65-percent growth since 2012 with over 8,500 units exported annually. The excellence of Taiwanese scooters has even pushed manufacturing countries such as Malaysia to import Taiwanese scooters. Exports to Malaysia have also risen up to 19.5 percent since 2012, according to the Ministry of Finance.

Growth to Excellence Purchases of scooters in Taiwan reached their peak in 2008, with over 850,000 units sold nationally. At the same time, the gear parts and accessory production industries in Taiwan have increasingly flourished as a result of the export market and local subsidiaries of foreign companies. With the high demand facing the manufacturing industry, smaller businesses that produce parts for larger conglomerates are on the rise and benefit from opportunities to both grow and conduct their own research to advance professionally. Most became experts in the manufacture of specific parts that eventually caught the attention of foreign companies, which increasingly place orders directly with local businesses. Thus, unlike most motorcycle manufacturing industries in the world, from internal gears to external add-on accessories, from rider apparel to technological advancement in the application of event data recording in motorcycles and scooters as well as the development in jet engines, Taiwan has become a country with specific expertise in manufacturing gear parts and accessories for overseas clients. As such, Taiwan has taken its place among other Asian countries as the one of the few key players in the motorcycle manufacturing and OEM industry. The upcoming Taiwan International Motorcycle Show will give foreign suppliers and buyers a unique opportunity to discover topnotch suppliers from Taiwan. Solely developing and producing one product, the Reabo Wander Car, the company was first established in 2011 after what used to be a hobby evolved into huge potential. Passionate about the lifestyle and sport attitude the Reabo has to offer, the company has been avidly promoting the vehicle locally and overseas after persevering relentlessly through multiple stages of trial and error. Taiwan poised to lead electric vehicle sector T

he well-developed information and communication technology advancements of Taiwan have led local companies to play an important role in the booming electric vehicle (EV) industry. According to a recent report from Taiwan’s Industrial Development Bureau under the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Taiwan is a major exporter of electric vehicles and related components to countries like the U.S., England, France, Australia, Denmark and many others. It is therefore little wonder that every year buyers from around the world come to Taiwan to look for EV products and suppliers at the annual Taiwan International Electric Vehicle Show (EV Taiwan, 台灣國際電動車展). But what makes Taiwan’s manufacturers different from their competitors elsewhere in Asia?

Book and movie exchanges are quite common; there’s even house swapping for travelers nowadays. This idea also applies to batteries made for electric scooters. Kentfa Advanced Technology Corp. introduced a small-scale battery exchanger in 2013 to assist riders with electric scooters. The exchanger is the size of an ATM with 15 slots for rechargeable batteries; it can be placed at the entrance of convenience stores, supermarkets or e-scooter dealerships. The procedure to swap the battery is simple: first insert the smart card, which assures that consumers make accurate payments, then type in the code on the touchscreen and put depleted batteries into the exchanger as indicated. In just one minute, another door will open and riders can get batteries that are fully charged and ready to go. The advantages of this invention are that riders save time in getting charged batteries for their scooter, and since the exchanger is small and can be put in stores, consumers don’t need to worry about the bike being out of battery on the road. Also, the machine will calculate automatically how much energy is used in the bat-

It is developed, designed, produced and sold by Dijiya Energy Saving Tech. with authorized sales by Egret from Germany and Ecoreco from the U.S. The company introduces several other products, including their new star: the lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery. This kind of battery has extraordinary performance and is able to support a large discharge current while maintaining stability during discharge. Plus, its self-discharge rate is very low so the battery won’t wear down when it’s not in use. LiFePO4 batteries are around 50 percent lighter than lead-acid batteries but possess a lifetime three-times as long. Welcome to Asia’s Only 4-in-1 Mega Motoring Show

rom April 9 to 12, the Taipei International Auto Parts & Accessories Show (Taipei AMPA, 台北國際汽車零配件展) will celebrate its 30th anniversary at TWTC Hall 1 and Nangang Exhibition Hall, in conjunction with the ninth annual Autotronics Taipei (第 9屆台北國際車用電子展), the ninth Taiwan International Motorcycle show (第9屆台灣國際機車展) and the fourth Taiwan International Electric Vehicle Show (EV Taiwan, 第 4屆台灣國際電動車展). The four-in-one show is the only professional exhibition platform in Asia for both two- and four-wheeled vehicles. After years of devoted work, Taiwan’s auto parts and accessories industry has transferred its sub-contract and pure manufacturing orientation to product design and development with less quantity but more variety. The products are lauded by many international factories for their security, stability and level of innovation. Exports have been growing continuously every year, and in 2012 the export value even reached NT$194.8 billion. Many manufacturers dedicated to auto parts like car lights, bumpers and parts made of rubber and plastics command top level market share worldwide, and also take up 80 to 90 percent of the after-sales market globally. Taipei AMPA has continued to evolve in accordance with the industry’s positive strides. At the very first event held in Songshan airport (松山機場) in 1984, there were only 111 companies and 185 booths; in 2014 an estimated 1,500 exhibitors will participate in 4,000 booths in 4-in-1 Mega Show. Whether considering the number of exhibitors or exhibition areas, Taipei AMPA has established a new record this year. Within just 30 years, we can proudly see the vast progress and developing export capability of Taiwan’s industries related to automobile parts and accessories. Beyond supply chain development, the automobile industry has also capitalized on the low carbon trend, environmental friendly products and production methods, the burgeoning motorcycle industry and automobile electronization. Development in these areas, including car electronics, motorcycles and electric vehicles, have also been coordinated for maximum benefit throughout the industry in recent years. Last year, when the four previously mentioned shows were hosted all together for the first time, they created an extraordinary and efficient result: four days of exhibition

attracted 65 thousand domestic and international visitors. This sales platform enabled foreign buyers to do one-stop shopping and maximized their purchase opportunities. Similarly, the 2014 Taipei AMPA has arranged four areas to exhibit all kinds of car components and accessories with new innovations and features, including the auto parts area, the auto accessories area, the tuning and restyling area and the repair and maintenance area. Autotronics Taipei will demonstrate Taiwan’s competence in manufacturing as well as advanced techniques in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) industry with areas exhibiting products such as automobile electronics and automobile electronic components and parts (each displayed in their designated section). As for the Taiwan International Motorcycle show, the exhibition center will be divided into three sectors: parts and accessories, motorcycles and motorcyclists’ accessories. EV Taiwan will present vehicles, battery materials, motors, charging stations and other related supplies. The host will also expand the test drive zone for buyers to experience the astonishing quality and excellent prices of Made-in-Taiwan products. In order to enhance interactions between exhibitors and international buyers, one-on-one procurement meetings, innovation awards and a welcome banquet will be hosted by the organizers during the exhibition. The Taipei AMPA, Autotronics Taipei, Taiwan International Motorcycle Show and EV Taiwan will unfold simultaneously from April 9 to 12 at TWTC Hall 1 and Nangang Exhibition Hall. This mega event will also collaborate with the Taiwan International Fastener Show (台灣國際扣件展) held in the Kaohsiung Exhibition Center (高雄展覽館) in Southern Taiwan to generate multiple benefits for “auto parts in the North, fasteners in the south.” ■

Taiwan’s automobile industry has been defying the sluggish domestic economy in recent year and has grown to become one of the nation’s strongest export industries in decades. According to statistics, Taiwan’s AM products currently hold a dominating worldwide market share of almost 80 to 90 percent. The local auto parts industry also benefits from Taiwan’s growing economic ties with mainland China. Figures from the Ministry of Economic Affairs show that almost all of the exported 33 items of auto part products included in the early harvest of the landmark economic cooperation framework agreement (ECFA) have reported consecutive growth in

AMPA & AUTO INNOVATION AWARDS To inspire, acknowledge and profile outstanding innovation, the organizer is hosting the 2014 AMPA & AutoTronics Innovation Awards. The substantial growth in the quality and scale of entries strongly mirrors the growing praise from the industry for this award. Brief introduction: Award winners will be carefully selected by professional judges from Industrial Technology Research Institute. Winning products will be announced at the Joint Opening Ceremony and exhibited at the Innovation Awards Pavilion. Categories of Competition: Products are divided into four areas: auto parts, auto accessories, auto electronic end products and auto electronic parts. In each of the four categories the jury will present one gold award, two silver awards, and three bronze awards respectively.
