Context

Blackpool was once a place of happiness, summer holidays and family time. However in the Daily Mail, on 21st August 2013 Blackpool was noted as one of the most deprived seas side towns in 21st Century. English seaside resorts are am Resorts which used to be thriving have become heavily populated by welfare claimants, those with substance abuse and mental health problems. Blackpool has decended down a long path over the past few decades and this topic is becoming increasingly popular in the news and is being studied by the ONS.

Brief

Are words always neccessary? Photography is such an expressive form of communication and sometimes we have to consider whether type is totally neccessary at all, or whether we can communicate solely through visual aethetics. You are required to create a zine or publication that communicates the world we live in through photography. You are required to collaborate with a Blackpool based photographer as the theme for the zines will be derelict buildings and furniture in and around Blackpool. You will need to brand a series of small zines that can work singularly or as a pack. The logo must be generic and represent a variety of themes however being recognisable, clear and defined.

Preparation & Research

You will need to research into your target market carefully and visit local zine shops such as Village in the Corn exchange Leeds to analyse successful zine formats, what works and what doesn't etc. Your target market will be zine collectors and photography enthusiasts. The time restriction will be 1 week for this brief. This will be a quick turn around brief. This will allow you to manage your time across this brief along with other on going briefs whilst executing this to a professional standard.

Evidence Submission

Your project submission should include sufficient appropriate material to show that you have addressed the brief comprehensively and clearly expressed your design and typographic skills. It must include: Strategy, Research and design development, final imagery, and the final packaging design across all products. This could be submitted as images on design boards, however it must have a professional finish. You must complete on going documentation of the design process and development on your OUGD603 extended practice blog. All blog posts must be labelled correctly and clearly formatted.

Mandatory Requirements

The zine could be in any format and could either be in a newspaper format or as a small magazine. The choice it yours, however it will need to have low printing costs. The layout must be clear and modern and all photographs must be well presented, dated and the photographer themselves credited. You may wish to consider how the zine's are packagines both singularly and also when sold as a series. Again, consider colour choices, stock and cost. There are no set restrictions on colour however it must be neutral in order to reflect the different topics for each specific zine.
