The idea for this Good Samaritan Project was comfort and security. With the personal belief that if you feel safe and secure, those who the space is intended for will be more successful and motivated to better themselves and their situations. Thus placing ones-self in the shoes of those who will be using the complex lead to the functionality of the spaces.

The Spanish Colonial theme of the complex was inspired by the surrounding homes and structures that are within a three-block radius.

The building covers about 24,050 square feet of the near 50,600 square foot property. It includes four floors (including the ground floor and roof top terrace), with the second and third floors as the living quarters for the residents.

The first floor or ground floor is split into publicly accessible and the private residents’ areas. The floor is broken up by three full four floor height accessible terrarium spaces. The main and biggest being in the center of the complex with the two smaller terrariums located on either side, in the public and private areas. One separates the checking and waiting room/areas for the clinic and the counseling offices; while the other breaks up the open concept multiuse space in the resident’s side of the ground floor. With them reaching all four floors, brings in natural light and green space to the residents and patrons.

The rest of the floor houses the main offices for support staff, the public clinic, conference, meeting areas and the “Goods Store” a.k.a. The Commissary.

The Second floor is split between short term and mid-term/family units with each area sectioned into Male and Female wings.

The third floor is only for long term and inexpensive rental rooms/units.

Each floor has several public gathering areas, bathroom/showers, joint laundry, and kitchenette areas.

Everything topped off with a full-length top terrace and green space on the fourth floor.

Areas for a dog run/kennel, feline kennel as well as opulent green space.

Maggie’s Treehouse

The idea behind the concept was fun, comforting and re- laxing. A place where patients can not only go to recieve treatments and counceling but also to have a social gather- ing point for those who may also be going through the same situation as themselves.

Taking inspiration from the other Maggie Centers, as they are all unique in theme and exterior and are their own sepa- rate buildings but also stood out in their own way. They did not match the exterior of the hospitals and medical centers they shared locations with. The abstract theme of the “Magie’s Tree House” builds off of the fun notion of a tree with a tree house in it’s branches.

The building covers approximately 13,000 square feet over 2 stories in the 11,000 sqare foot proposed property. The first floor is the main congrational hub of the center. With the “heart of the tree” being the extra large dinning ta- ble and kitchen where patrons can sit at or cook a snack after a treatment or meeting.

The multiple levels, nooks and snugs allow those individu- als to get away from the main action areas and relax or segre- gate themselves for some ‘me time’.

With the building being rather on the smaller side, the multiple frosted and clear curtain walls allow the natural sunlight to penetrate the builing and give it a more open feel- ing. There are multiple exterior green spaces and siting areas giving the green and sun thereapy. The multiple green/living walls as well as the color scheme is to give a “in nature” feel while still being in doors.

During a Studio Critque in a previous semester at Allan Hancock College, I was recomended by my instructor to Ms. Kirsten Cahoon, the Program Manager for the Homeless Shelters in Santa Maria.

She approached me with the inquirey to volunteer with a Landscape Architecture Program.

The program would include the interior and exterior landscaping.

The landscaping would be funded by a non-profit organization, and that their only requirements were that the design could only include ‘Local, Drought resistent, and Non-Invasive plants’.

Texture and color were main focus. Something soft with a touch of color. Since there were includes, soil errosion was also a concern. Including decorative bolders breaks up the greenery.

As an added easter agg, I included something edible for the patrons (Cherry Trees).
