Dear Parents & Carers

I would like to wish you a very warm welcome to our friendly, inclusive and thriving school. We hope that you and your child will be very happy at Lum Head, and will soon feel part of our Lum Head Community. We nurture each child as an individual and provide opportunities to build confidence celebrate strengths and achievements and inspire our children to develop a love of learning that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives. It is my belief that happy children make for successful learners, and make it our business to work hard and to celebrate our achievements – fun is an essential part of the learning journey!

We believe that the partnership between parents/carers and school is a vital one to ensure that all of our children have the opportunity to thrive. There are many ways in which you can become more greatly involved in the life of the school and hopefully get to know more parents too. We welcome you to assemblies and special events throughout the year. The Friends of Lum Head are a dynamic group of parents and carers who organise special events and fundraisers for the school; new volunteers are always welcome. Many of our parents also volunteer in school, either by coming into school to help in the classrooms or by accompanying us on trips.

We produce a weekly newsletter to keep you informed of all the events in school, which includes a calendar which we regularly update. You will receive a copy of the newsletter by email every Friday, and we also publish it on our website, Facebook and Twitter pages. We were awarded the Leading Parent Partnership Award in October 2019, in recognition of our strong partnership work with parents. Please feel free to contact me via the school office for any more information.

We ask parents to avoid bringing cars to Troutbeck Road if at all possible as it is a narrow road with much residential parking. There is ample parking available at Gatley golf course (off Styal Road) and around Grasmere Road. Both areas are easily accessible by a short footpath on to Troutbeck Road.

We wish to have a positive relationship with our neighbours, and ask parents to never park across driveways and to park with consideration to others.

term dateS

We publish our annual term dates on our website each year. Term time holidays are not permitted, but we encourage parents to look at the Easter and Whit two week holidays if they are looking for a cheaper holiday. If your child will not be in school for exceptional circumstances we ask parents to fill in a form. Please ask at the school office if you require a form.

mediciNeS iN ScHooL

Any children who use an inhaler should have an inhaler in school at all times. This is kept by the teacher in a marked bag in the classroom. No children should have any medicines in their bags as this presents a risk to other children. If your child needs to take medication in school, please come to the office to fill in a form. Our Family Welfare Worker may discuss this with you to ensure that your child’s medical needs are met in line with our guidance.

We run three play sessions for our new Reception children in the July preceding their Reception year. Parents stay with their children for the first two sessions to ease their transition into Reception. On the final session, Mr Ryan and the Reception Team run an information meeting for Reception parents including induction information for September. We send a letter to all parents with their child’s start date for September. We stagger this over the first few days of term, so that a new group of Reception children starts school each day.

Our Reception staff work closely with local nurseries and preschools to ensure a smooth transition to school, including visiting the children in their Nursery settings.

We challenge our children to achieve as highly as they are able. Our teachers are relentless in the pursuit of excellence for all children, and standards of teaching and learning are high. Each year a number of our Year 6 children score the highest marks in their SATs tests and continue their academic success at a range of high schools, including numerous grammar schools in the area.

Lum Head is a lead school in teaching mastery in maths and we host maths training sessions for teachers in other schools in Stockport. We also train trainee teachers from the University of Manchester, sharing our high expectations and good practice.

Our high aspirations do not just apply to reading, writing and maths, however. We also challenge our children to learn and apply their knowledge and skills in other subjects. In PE, there are many opportunities for children to participate in sports and physical activity, both in lesson time and in extra-curricular activities. We have been awarded the Silver School Games Mark for our commitment, engagement and delivery of competitive school sport.

In music, we provide various opportunities for children to learn a musical instrument and sing. We have a school band and choir and have performed at the Bridgewater Hall and the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. We achieved the Music Mark in September 2019 and again in September 2021, awarded by the UK Association for Music Education for our outstanding work in providing a wide range of musical opportunities.

The Headteacher and leaders are relentless in pursuit of the best possible standard of education for their pupils. They have high aspirations for pupils in all areas of school life; consequently, Lum Head Primary School is thriving.

A range of extra-curricular clubs enhance the curriculum by offering a wider range of experiences, e.g. Science, choir, running and art.
