PARISH LETTER As I’m sitting at my desk typing this Parish letter for the September magazine, I’m feeling really excited about this season. Perhaps it is because I used to be a teacher, or perhaps I’m harking back to my own school years, but the early onset of autumn makes me think of starting afresh and learning new things!

At our churches across the Parish we hope for lots of different opportunities to learn more about how we can live after God and deepen our faith in the actions we take and the choices we make.

In September we hope that Renew, a quiet contemplative, monthly service, will set people up for the coming week by giving over space to pray and listen to God. We also enjoy gathering once a month in the evening for our Six o’clock Service – full of contemporary worship and vibrant discussion.

In October we are pleased to be starting back with Messy Church, which is a fun, interactive way for families to learn together about God’s love. We are praying that our quieter, more traditional Communion Service, that takes place on a Wednesday morning at Wighill, will grow - especially as we share lunch at the pub afterwards.

Please feel very welcome to join us at any or all of the above services, not to mention our other Sunday worship services of Holy Communion and Family Breakfast and Family Praise services. Please see the magazine for details.

At the moment we are fortunate to look out onto golden wheat fields, all ripened and ready for harvest. For me, again it is a scene that looks wholesome and full of promise. It makes me think too of how in the Bible harvest is a picture 3

of God’s provision, his blessing and his heart to grow good things here on earth, as in heaven.

But the task of harvesting is a lot of hard, dirty work too - I’ve seen the combines throwing up clouds of dust and with their headlights on, working into the dark of the night.

We love to celebrate harvest festivals in our rural churches; to thank God for his goodness and to pray for our farming community and for the work that they do.

These important times to give thanks will take place across the month of October. Please feel very welcome to come and join us, as we celebrate God’s goodness and speak his blessing over our communities.

TO THE SAINTS OF THE DIOCESE OF YORK congregational action, rural church schools, and rural chaplaincy can make a difference. A few parishes are now involved in a pilot Rural Isolation Project run by The Arthur Rank Centre and Yorkshire Churches Rural Business Support (YCRBS) to see how modest investments of money and training together with prayer and imagination can enable congregations to reach out to the isolated in their communities, as well as reestablished chaplaincy to provide a listening ear and referral facility.

Thirdly, many churches support the outreach of farming charities through giving and fund raising. Material and social poverty are a reality in our rural areas, yet Rural Churches have a distinctive part to play in the light of God’s concern for the poor and our strategic goal to reach people in poverty. + John Selby

The Bishop of Selby, Dr John Thomson, writes: Rural People in Poverty When I drive around the rural areas of our Diocese, I see England’s green and pleasant land populated with affluent looking villages, so it is shocking to learn government statistics show that poverty is a reality in rural areas. In 2016 -17, 17% of rural households were relatively poor and 15% absolutely poor. Living in rural areas means higher transport, property and living costs, reduced public services and utilities and fewer jobs for the young that mean the pounds don’t go as far and younger people have to move elsewhere. Not only this, but changes in agricultural practices, economic pressures and an aging population mean that social poverty is increasing as communities become isolated and support services less secure, resulting in loneliness and mental health conditions. How can we respond to these challenges? First local knowledge is vital, with more communities coming together to form community groups and keep an eye on their neighbours. Secondly

LION KING HOLIDAY CLUB On Monday 22nd July 2019, the annual church holiday club opened its doors to the children of the Parish and beyond. Whilst it was more of a trickle than a steady stream of children this year, those that came enjoyed it to the extent they nagged parents to let them stay all week.

The theme of the Lion King linked nicely to the Joseph story, and we explored part of the story each day using a variety of different media.

Each morning started with the children decorating a square of material, which was secretly sewn together over night to make Joseph's coat/prayer blanket. Do look out for it as it tours round the Parish. They then played games including pew volleyball, sang songs and watched a drama performed by the older contingent.

Craft sessions before lunch, saw the children make 3 crafts a day including lion cushions, rag rug wreaths, bags, lion king tea light holders, Joseph in jail pictures, pony bead melts AND a daily food craft. Lunch on Pricilla's lawn was a time for relaxation, fun and friendships to form, then I was back to it for science activities. This saw them cleaning pennies, making rainbows with skittles and make exploding (or not so exploding) paint all presided over by Geraldine the Giraffe!

The day ended back in Healaugh church with a quieter period of reflection, and a time for each group to explore the prayer station which changed daily from sand, to a cardboard jail, a paper shredder, to Joseph's coat.

We would like to thank those involved in the planning, for the families who attended, for those who so freely, and generously gave their time, and for the use of Healaugh Memorial hall, and church. We greatly appreciate it!

CONFIRMATION – is it for you?

Each calendar year is made up of seeing how God’s story interacts with our personal stories. It is wonderful to witness how lives are changed by the love of God at key moments such as baptism, weddings and even funerals. The reality that Christians trust in God who was made human in the form of Jesus and who chose to suffer, die and is now risen to everlasting life, opens us up to the eve- present love and grace of God. One such special service, that can affect real change in people’s hearts and minds, is Confirmation. We will be having a Confirmation service on Sunday 8th December 2019.

People, who might have been baptized as babies, are given this opportunity to declare for themselves their trust in God and to ask for God’s help as they continue to put their faith into practice.

The Bishop of Selby comes and anoints confirmation candidates and asks for God’s Holy Spirit to bless them with an increase of God’s love and joy.

Richard and I will be holding a couple of confirmation classes; we will explore key Christian markers, such as the Creed, the Lord’s prayer, the Commandments and the Beatitudes – God’s blueprint for flourishing community living.

Over the last couple of years our church has changed. We have welcomed new people into our family. We have come together across the parish, grown and started something new. Now we would like to invite you to help us shape the next part of our journey together. So please join us on Saturday 14th September at 10am in the memorial hall, Healaugh (please bring your own picnic and we will eat together). We will be finished by 3pm. This is a day for the whole family, and things will be laid on for our younger people. We would like to get views from everyone, old and young. I hope that we can organize a creche on the day.

I am making the commitment that it won’t be another boring church meeting.

Mark it down in your diaries for what will be a wonderful time for us all together.

Towards the middle of every month you are invited to a quiet reflective evening service, called Renew. The accompanying picture is of a myrtle flower - Isaiah 55 uses beautiful rural images to describe how God transforms our hearts and communities as we spend time with him: Instead of the thorn-bush will grow the juniper, and instead of briers the myrtle will grow (Isaiah 55:13) This service has changed its name from Spa Church, but will keep its steady, contemplative rhythm with pockets of stillness. The simple format offers an experience of worship that is multisensory, creative and contemplative.

Our first service will be at St John the Baptist Church, Hessay, on Sunday 15th September at 6pm.

ART SOZO A quiet afternoon of contemplation and colour leading to deep encounters with God. I have had the privilege (for that is exactly what it is) of leading three Art Sozo sessions over the summer one here at Healaugh and two on the Christian house party that we attended with our family. Using colour to have a conversation with God is a new take on prayer and leads to unexpected experiences and revelation.

Here are a few of the comments that were made on feedback forms.

I was surprised how something that I don’t do (paint) became an amazing and profound means of ‘talking with God” I feel more rested and at peace than I have felt in a long time with him. I was reminded of my absolute worth in Him. God clearly showed me that He delights in me and loves me. His love will and does radiate from me. I don’t need to be or do anything in my own strength.

Our next Art Sozo will be held in the Hayloft at Healaugh on 10th October and then in St Cuthbert’s Centre House of prayer in York on Thursday 12th October. If you would like to book a place, please email priscillahealaugh@gmail.com or ellajudson@btinternet.com. Sessions last for three hours and we ask for a contribution of £30 to cover materials and to feed into the Sozo ministry but finance is not a barrier to taking part. No painting skills are required, this is about colour and connecting with feelings.

EAST WINDOW UPDATE All Saints Wighill, has now received an estimate for the stonework and the overall estimate of costs has soared to £41k! We have applications for grants towards the cost in place for up to £26k but we won’t find out if we have been successful until later in the year.

SUMMER UPDATE ‘CHATTERBOX’ MILITARY WIVES CHOIR AND SEALED KNOT The Military Wives Choir performance at St Helen’s in July was a fantastic evening with over 100 people in Church honouring the fallen from the battle of Marston Moor. We were delighted to welcome members of the Sealed Knot charity who also joined us on this 375th commemorative year. The Military Wives are a group of ladies whose husbands, partners and loved ones have fought in more recent battles. These brave young women come together in song, to find much needed 16

support during the most difficult of times. The choir, their musical director Jessa Liversidge and accompanist Malcolm Maddock took us through a wonderful programme of music.

The refreshments were very much enjoyed by all, a big thank you to those who baked and contributed to a delicious spread. A special thank you to Linda Morrell who provided and arranged masses of wild flowers, which decorated the church 1644 style, so beautifully. Last but not least a big thank you to - You, who joined us on the evening and helped in so many ways to make this a memorable occasion.

YORK MINSTER PARISH PASS 2019 Did you know parishioners from across the Diocese of York are welcome to visit York Minster free of charge? Each year, York Minster posts 10 free passes to each Church; this year they have been sent to each PCC Secretary (or Churchwarden where there is a PCC vacancy).

These passes can be borrowed if you would like to visit the Minster, and then given back so that other parishioners can use the cards. The passes for 2019 have been be sent to PCC Secretaries during December, and these will replace the Parish Pass 2018 (also any Diocesan entry passes still in circulation).

BABY BASICS Do you want to make a difference to a new life?

Over the last few months I have been talking with Rob and Fiona, from Wighill, about how we can make a difference and help those who are less fortunate than ourselves. Eventually we have thought that this initiative may be one of those things that we can do together, as a Parish and Community. “This is one of the most rewarding things I have ever done as part of my church outreach.�

Moses basket starter packs (containing nappies, wipes, maternity towels, shampoo for both mother and baby, soap and other toiletry items, as well as baby clothing, sheets, blankets and a towel) are donated and put together by the donating organisation then distributed to women and families in extreme need via midwives, health visitors and other professional groups.

There is a lot more information about how this may work, in the meantime if you would like to join us in coordinating and contributing to this worthy cause please contact Richard in the first instance.

Psalm 62:5-8 Mrs Nina Read and Mrs Mandy Newby Our congratulations go to Mrs Nina Read who has accepted a new post at Headlands Primary School, starting in September. Mrs Read has been an invaluable member of our St Mary’s family as a parent, volunteer, teaching assistant and supply teacher for 12 years and her enthusiasm and positivity will be greatly missed by us all.

At the end of term, Mrs Mandy Newby will also be finishing her role supporting Class 4. She has been working with us on Wednesdays for the past 3 years and will also be missed by us all.

We wish both Mrs Read and Mrs Newby every success and happiness in the future.

Building Work As you may have seen, our building work for Phase Two is now underway. This will focus on extending the school hall, enlarging our foyer area, creating a new teaching space for small groups, relocating the Headteacher’s office and adding 23

a new staffroom. We know that this work adds to the traffic and noise within the village, but we would like to thank everyone for their understanding that this temporary inconvenience will improve the educational provision and experience for all our children here at St. Mary’s. Currently, the building work is due to finish at the end of September.

Healthy Schools’ Week The children had a fantastic week learning about how to keep healthy from a variety of visitors. This has included Freddy Fit, North Yorkshire Police, Tesco, North Yorkshire Fire Service and our Healthy School Nurse team. Thank you to all of the staff for making the week so successful and great fun.

Times Table Tussle The children had great, competitive fun at our annual ‘Times Table Tussle’ competition today. Well done to everyone for participating and trying their very best! A special well done however must go to our winners from each group— Grace, Iris, Jessica, Ellie, Will, Maia, Tom and Betsy. Thank you to Mrs Gee and Mrs Beighton for organising this for the children. ___________________________ Class Three’s Trip to Beningbrough Hall When I woke up, I had a smile on my face, knowing that I was going to Beningbrough Hall. Before I knew it, I was at school, getting my things together to board the coach!

The reason Class Three were on this trip was to learn all about plants because that is our science topic for this term.

Going Potty!

When we got to Beningbrough Hall, we were put into groups and my group marched down to the greenhouse in excitement, yearning to find out what we were going to do. Once there, we found out that we were making plant pots out of newspaper, using a special tool, and planting pea seeds in them with peat-free compost. I am excited to see my French pea grow!

Fabulous Flower Facts Next we had a walk with a caring lady who told us all about the plants at Beningbrough. These included rhubarb, raspberry, strawberry, fig, pea and blackberry. She also told us about the rabbits and other pesky creatures that try to nibble at the plants! There was a beautiful pear arch that had grown over many years. The walled garden was stunning and also very interesting because there were chimneys within the walls so that on cold days, the gardener would light a fire to heat the walls. This is so plants from hot countries could grow!

Tremendous Trees The final activity we did in the morning was to go and look at some of the trees at Beningbrough. A man called Tony took us to see an English oak tree and told us that the man who planted it, put it in the middle of a path (just because he could!) He told us about the three ways you could work out the age of a tree: the first way is to cut it down and count the rings, the next way is to measure the circumference of the trunk and the final way is to check the records at Beningbrough to see when it was planted. He also showed us the differences between an English oak and an American oak.

The Hall The beautiful hall was built more than three hundred years ago, designed by a teenager in an Italian style. In the hall we did sketching, dressing up and creating portraits on the computers. It was really funny when I saw my face come up on a portrait of a lady!

Class Three had an amazing day at Beningbrough and it is truly a place I will remember.

MARSTON MOOR PROBUS CLUB At their meeting on Tuesday 25th June 2019 Mr David Jackson welcomed back Lesley Newnham to give her talk “Guess who I met in Lyme Regis Today”. Lesley was drawn to Lyme Regis by an urge to try a bit of fossil hunting on the eroding Dorset coast. She became intrigued by the life story of Mary Anning who was born in Lyme Regis in 1799 and died in 1847. Mary first helped her father and then worked on her own finding fossils, identifying and selling them. Mary and her brother found significant Jurassic fossils and she became quite famous.

Lesley subsequently found that many famous people had connections with Lyme Regis. One of the earlier ones being George Somers born in 1564 who became very rich through Privateering. Somers sailed to Virginia with supplies to relieve the desperate colonists but a storm drove him onto the rocks of Bermuda which he is attributed as discovering and claiming for the Crown. The Duke of Monmouth landed at Lyme Regis intent on deposing James I in 1685 but enjoyed the place for too long and was captured and beheaded. Other famous people to visit or born in Lyme Regis were Judge Jefferies (1685), Thomas Coram, born in Lyme in 1668, created the London Foundling Hospital. Jane Austen is well known for having visited Lyme for short periods (1803 and 1804) and walked the famous Cobb. Capt. Sir Richard Spencer on his retirement from a successful naval career lived at Lyme (1817 -1833) and developed an early selfrighting lifeboat. Others included Beatrix Potter (1904), G K Chesterton (1926) who wrote one of the Father Brown stories there, and John Fowles lived from 1968 in Lyme Regis and wrote The French Lieutenant’s Woman set and eventually filmed in Lyme Regis. Lesley was thanked and complimented on her fascinating talk.

LONG MARSTON YORKSHIRE COUNTRYWOMEN'S ASSOCIATION Our August Garden Party, scheduled to be held at The Old Rectory, was beset by rain so we met as usual in the village hall. The surroundings may not have been as attractive but the buffet table looked stunning and we could hardly hold back to allow Sue Lewis time to run through the business of the day. Tockwith Show was a great success with a new member of our group, Liz Powley, winning the cup. Liz is a very talented lady and we are pleased to have her join us. Numbers of entrants are dropping in many categories at the show which is a worrying downturn.

Sue brought our attention to various events taking place this summer: on 12th September there is lunch at Rogerthorp Manor at a cost of ÂŁ23 and the Thorpe Arch and Walton group have a winter fair on 9th November. The Autumn meeting is on 23rd October at Queen Margarets School, Escrick when the Bad Apple Theatre Company will be performing extracts from 'Frozen Romans' in the morning and at 1.30 there will be a talk by Dickie Arbitter, who has been close to the Royal Family. Tickets cost ÂŁ15; tea and coffee will be provided but please bring your own lunch.

Finally, we partook of afternoon tea in style and many thanks to all the ladies who brought such a wonderful array of goodies. No dinner tonight, I think!

Our next meeting will be at 2.00pm on Wednesday, 11th September in the village hall when we will be enjoying a flower arranging demonstration by Beryl Plimmer, who will be showing us how to make three table decorations. RAINBOWS NEWS Rainbows - a fun and exciting programme for girls aged five to seven 1st Askham Bryan Rainbows continued to meet throughout the remainder of the summer term. Girls come from villages including; Catterton, Healaugh, Wighill, Rufforth, Askham Bryan and Appleton Roebuck.

This term the Rainbows have enjoyed making sorbet, decorating biscuits, learning new songs and having a teddy bears picnic. All of the girls made their Rainbow Promise on the last meeting of term and went home proudly wearing their shiny new promise badges and clutching their new badge books so that they could work on their interest badges over the holidays. I wonder what they have been up to.

Rainbows is all about developing selfconfidence, building friendships, learning new things and having fun. Girls get their hands dirty with arts and crafts, get in touch with nature and play games - it's all about learning by doing.
