Welcome to The 7 Churches of Revelation Tour! My wife Colleen and I couldn’t be more excited to go on this spiritual adventure with you through the ancient land of Turkey!

Buckle up… because this ain’t your average sight-seeing tour. In the next few pages, we’re going to walk in the footsteps of the Apostle John… stand in the shadows of ancient temples… and open the pages of Revelation as Jesus speaks personally to His Church—including you and me today!

Turkey is a nation where East meets West, past meets present, and the Bible literally blazes to life. This land—modern-day Türkiye—is home to the seven original churches that Jesus addressed in Revelation chapters 2 and 3. Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea—real cities with real-life Christians facing real-world problems. And Jesus offered them (and us) real hope and encouragement!

This trip is part biblical expedition, part archaeological adventure, and part spiritual pilgrimage. As we journey from one ancient city to the next, we’ll explore well-preserved ruins from the Early Church, discover eye-opening symbols from the Roman Empire, and dig deep into the rich meaning of Jesus’ final words to His followers. Every stop on this technicolor tour is packed with insight, inspiration, and the call to spiritual revival.

First Stop: Istanbul Before we visit the 7 churches, we’ll spend time exploring the enchanting city of Istanbul—a world-class city where history hangs thick in the air. Formerly known as Byzantium and Constantinople, this was the capital of the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman empires.

Hagia Sophia For nearly 1,000 years, this breath-taking building was the largest church in the world. First a cathedral, then a mosque, then a museum—its majestic dome and golden mosaics are a dazzling symbol of modern Islam and Christianity’s historic roots.

Blue Mosque Named for its vivid blue tiles, this Ottomanera mosque is one of the most photographed landmarks in the world. With six soaring minarets set against the backdrop of the Bosphorus Strait, the Blue Mosque is one of Istanbul’s most iconic landmarks.

TURKEY OR TÜRKIYE? Officially, Turkey is known as the Republic of Türkiye. In 2021, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan called for official usage of Türkiye, saying that it “expresses the culture, civilization, and values of the Turkish nation in the best way.” In 2022, the United Nations agreed to use Türkiye officially in English.

Both names are acceptable in casual conversation.

Where Is It? Modern Turkey is a strategically located nation– bordering the Black Sea to the north; Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Iran to the east; Iraq, Syria, and the Mediterranean Sea to the south; and the Aegean Sea, Greece, and Bulgaria to the west.

Ankara is Turkey’s capital and second-largest city. Istanbul is its largest city and economic center.

ISTANBUL: City of Empires Istanbul is the largest city in Turkey, considered its economic, cultural, and historical heart. With a population over 15 million, Istanbul is among the largest cities in Europe and in the world by population.

It is a city straddling two continents; about two-thirds of its population live in Europe and the rest in Asia. Istanbul straddles the Bosphorus Strait—one of the world’s busiest waterways— between the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea. Istanbul served as the capital of four empires: the Roman Empire (330– 395), the Byzantine Empire (395–1204 and 1261–1453), the Latin Empire (1204–1261), and the Ottoman Empire (1453–1922).

Pulling Back the Curtain on Revelation The book of Revelation has a reputation for being confusing—full of beasts, bowls, trumpets, and strange visions. But when understood it in its historical context, Revelation isn’t meant to scare us, but prepare us for what’s to come! It’s meant to inject hope into anxious hearts.

This is not just a book about the “end times.” It is a letter from Jesus to His people living under enormous cultural and political pressure.

The first-century Christians who first heard these words were being persecuted. Some lost their jobs for refusing to bow to Rome. Others were imprisoned, tortured, or killed—burned alive, fed to wild beasts, crucified. They were squeezed between two pressures: the lure of sexual immorality and the demand to worship the emperor. Many stood firm. Some compromised. But many stood firm.

Sound familiar? Even today, “Christ-followers” find themselves caught between cultural immorality and political idolatry. That’s why Revelation is not just for their time then—it’s for our time now!

Meet Pastor John Revelation was written by the Apostle John around 96 AD.

Before he was “the

Beloved Apostle” or “John the Revelator,” he was simply Pastor John. For decades, he shepherded the believers in Ephesus, teaching them “the way of Jesus”—the way of love. He was known as “the disciple whom Jesus loved,” and his writings breathe that same passion for God and His people.

When Revelation begins, John is the last living apostle. The rest of the apostles are dead. Most of them were murdered: Peter crucified. Paul beheaded. One by one, his brothers in ministry sealed their faith with their blood. Now, in his old age, John carries the weight of a lifetime of ministry— and has the scars to prove it. He walked with Jesus, witnessed His crucifixion and resurrection, preached across the Roman world, and watched the Gospel take root in hostile soil. Yet his greatest assignment is about to unfold in an unlikely place— a forbidding prison island called Patmos.

Patmos is a small, crescent-shaped island about 30 miles off the coast of modern-day Turkey. Today, it’s a quiet Greek fishing island where locals sell olives and sunbathers relax on sandy beaches. But in John’s day, it was a place of exile—volcanic, barren, and filled with marble quarries where prisoners labored in chains.

REVELATION IS AN APOCALYPSE The word “Revelation” comes from the Greek apokálypsis, meaning “unveiling” or “pulling back the curtain” to reveal something previously hidden. In the first century, “apocalypse” was used as a theater term. When you attended a play, the moment the curtain lifted to reveal the next scene—that was an “apocalypse.”

In our modern world, we use “apocalypse” to mean catastrophe.

In the news, we see headlines like “Apocalyptic Wildfires Devastate California.” And yes—those fires are devastating. But that’s not how John’s first-century audience heard the word.

For them, “The Apocalypse of Jesus Christ” was thrilling.

It meant God was about to pull back the curtain of the cosmos and show them something glorious. Something beautiful. A source of hope and faith in a time of fear.

And notice whose apocalypse it is: “The revelation from Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants what must soon take place.”

This is important to grasp. The title of this book is Revelation, not Revelations. Yes, the Apostle John received a series of visions—but it is one revelation. Some visions flash back to the past, others fast-forward to the future, but it’s all one singular unveiling vision from Jesus Christ.

Who’s pulling back the curtain? Jesus. This is His apocalypse. It’s not a revelation from man—it’s from Jesus, by Jesus, and all about Jesus.

Revelation is pulling back the curtain to reveal King Jesus in His heavenly glory—risen, reigning, and returning to Earth as Conquering King!

THE PURPOSE OF REVELATION Jesus gave this vision to do two things:

Comfort the afflicted.

If you are hurting, His words bring hope, comfort, and courage.

Afflict the comfortable.

If you are spiritually complacent, His words will shake you awake!

When life feels like it’s spinning out of control—wars, disasters, riots, collapsing morals—Revelation pulls back the curtain to show you God’s perspective:

Things aren’t falling apart; they’re falling into place.

The King is coming.

3 LENSES FOR READING REVELATION To understand Revelation clearly, you need 3 pairs of “reading glasses”:

1. HISTORIC As Jesus downloaded His vision to John, He wrote 7 letters to 7 real-life churches located in 7 historic cities in Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey). We’ll visit these fascinating historical sites on our tour! The archaeological ruins of these first-century cities will help us understand the cultural context of Jesus’ words.

2. SYMBOLIC Like most apocalyptic literature, Revelation is rich with vivid imagery: colors, numbers, and symbols that represent deeper spiritual realities. The number 7, for example, represents perfection or completeness. Lampstands, stars, lambs, and dragons are not literal—they symbolize kingdoms, qualities, or spiritual powers.

3. PROPHETIC Revelation is prophecy. That is, it looks into the future and reveals what will happen next from God’s perspective. The central prophecy? Jesus Christ will return in glory to judge evil, reward His people, and make all things new!

To be clear: Biblical prophecy is not man’s prediction. When we hear “prophetic,” we sometimes think of a “prediction”—something that may or may not come true. (I predict the Yankees will win the World Series. Sadly, that may or may not happen) But Bible prophecy is not a prediction—it is a promise. 100% guaranteed by God! Certain to be fulfilled!

ARE YOU READY? Jesus’ return is imminent. We don’t know the day or the hour, but He told us to watch for signs—wars, earthquakes, famine, moral decay. According to Jesus, these are not random disasters; they are birth pains (Matthew 24:3-14). Like contractions, they signify that something new is about to arrive: the Kingdom of God is breaking into our world!

From an earthly perspective, it may look like our world is falling apart. From Heaven’s perspective, everything is falling into place. The King is on His way!

THE ALPHA AND OMEGA In Revelation, Jesus declares: “I am the Alpha and the Omega… who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.” —Revelation 1:8 Alpha is first letter of the Greek alphabet and Omega is the last. King Jesus is claiming to be the beginning and end of human history—the A to Z, the source and destiny of all creation! One day, when the curtain is fully pulled back, we will see our Risen Lord face-to-face and be transformed like Him—whole, holy, and glorified forever.

That is the hope of Revelation: Not fear, but faith. Not despair, but destiny!

As we explore the 7 churches together—whether on these pages or walking among the ancient ruins in Turkey—my prayer for you is simple:

May God give you ears to hear and eyes to see what His Spirit is saying.

And may your faith burst into flame as you behold the blazing beauty of our coming Christ!

JESUS IN HIS GLORY When you close your eyes and imagine Jesus, what do you see? Most of us picture Him in His humility: a cuddly baby in a Bethlehem manger, a gentle shepherd with a lamb over His shoulders, a humble teacher washing feet, or the suffering Savior on the Cross. These are precious images—but they don’t paint a complete picture.

The book of Revelation gives us the only full, physical, head-to-toe description of Jesus in the entire Bible—and it’s unlike anything you’ve ever pictured. Here, the curtain is pulled back to reveal the Risen Christ as He is right now: exalted, radiant, pulsating with power, and awesome in glory!

This is the Jesus who John met in Revelation—and this is the Jesus you and I will encounter when we meet Him.

John’s Dazzling Vision

It was around 96 AD. The apostle John, now an elderly pastor in Ephesus, had been arrested for preaching “the word of God and the testimony of Jesus” (Revelation 1:9).

Rome’s emperor, Domitian, demanded to be worshiped as “Lord and God.” John refused.

For that, he was beaten, chained, and banished to the prison island of Patmos— Rome’s “Alcatraz” in the Aegean Sea. On “the Lord’s Day” (Sunday), John was praying when suddenly—“I was in the Spirit, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet” (Revelation 1:10). In the first century, a trumpet announced the arrival of a king. The King had entered John’s cave.

The Cave of the Apocalypse Tradition says John lived in a small cave halfway up a hill overlooking the port in Patmos. Today it is the Cave of the Apocalypse,

as

a

place

of

worship. Inside, three large cracks split the stone ceiling. Local tradition holds that these formed when “the voice like a trumpet” spoke to John, symbolizing the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit entering the cave. A smooth hollow in the rock marks the place where John is said to have laid his head.

The Glorified Christ The Jesus described by John in Revelation 1:14–16 is not the humble carpenter of Galilee, but the radiant King of heaven.

“The hair on His head was white like wool…”

White hair doesn’t mean Jesus is old—it means He is eternal! In Scripture, white also symbolizes wisdom, honor, and glory. His radiant hair reflects His purity and holiness, untouched by sin or corruption. It’s a visible sign of His divine nature and His authority to judge and reign forever.

“… His eyes were like blazing fire.”

Christ’s blazing eyes represent His omniscience– Jesus sees all & knows all! His eyes are like lasers– they see through everything! Jesus has perfect knowledge & penetrating insight.

Q: Does it encourage you or scare you to know that there’s nothing going on in your life, my life, or our church’s life that escapes God’s gaze?

Jesus can see straight through our facades– into all the secret junk we keep hidden and burn it away!

“His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace…”

Bronze feet represent a king’s judgment. In the ancient world, the person being judged kneeled before the king who sat elevated on his throne. When the person looked up, he saw the king’s feet delivering swift judgment! King Jesus has glowing feet of red-hot metal--ready to stamp out sin in His Church!

“... and His voice was like the sound of rushing waters.”

Have you ever heard Niagara Falls? Millions of gallons of water crash over a cliff onto the rocks below with awesome power that never runs out!

This is not the still, small voice of God! This is King Jesus unveiling His thundering power and might to John–His voice must’ve sounded deafening!

“... coming out of His mouth was a sharp, double-edged sword.”

The sword in Jesus’ mouth isn’t a blade between His teeth—it’s the living Word of God! “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword…” (Hebrews 4:12) In Greek, John uses rhomphaia—a razor-sharp double-edged sword. When Jesus speaks, His Word cuts through deception, exposes truth, and brings both judgment and healing. It is not a weapon of human violence, but divine authority—a scalpel of truth that cuts to heal His Church.

“His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance.”

John says seeing the Glorified Christ was like staring into the sun—blinding, brilliant, and overwhelming! It’s the same dazzling glory revealed at His transfiguration (Matthew 17:2).

This is no meek, sandal-wearing rabbi from Galilee, no flannelgraph Jesus from Sunday School—this is the Cosmic Christ, the risen King of Kings! His majesty and power must have stolen John’s breath away.

JESUS REASSURES JOHN… AND US! John wrote: “When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead” (Revelation 1:17). Bro fainted!

Don’t laugh—you would too! Falling at Christ’s feet is the only logical response when a finite, sinful human comes into the presence of an infinite, holy God! (In Luke 5, when Peter saw Jesus’ unlimited power, he fell to his knees & cried: “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!”)

May I challenge you? Don’t settle for a tame, junior varsity vision of Jesus. A complete vision of Jesus Christ always includes a healthy fear because we see Him in His glory and realize He sees us in our sin!

Jesus lovingly placed His hand on John and reassured him: “Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.” (Reveleation 1:17–18) Even in the midst of our fear, Jesus lovingly reassures His people. Because He conquered sin on the Cross and defeated death by His resurrection, Jesus holds the keys! The keys belong to Christ alone—and He never lends them to the enemy.

Why This Vision Matters Is your view of Jesus too small? If your view of Jesus is small, your problems will feel overwhelming.

But if your vision of Jesus is high and exalted, it puts everything else in perspective.

When you are on your own “Patmos”—alone, suffering, uncertain—remember the Cosmic Christ of Revelation 1.

This is your Coming King.

This is Jesus as He is today.

He walks among His people.

He knows your situation. He holds the keys.

And the next time you see Him, it will be in blazing glory.

Pilgrim Prayer: Lord Jesus, lift my eyes to see You as You are right now—my risen King, my great High Priest, my soon-to-come Lord of Lords. When I feel weak, give me strength to trust You and overcome temptation. When I feel afraid, remind me of Your love and power and that You hold all the keys! Elevate my vision, Lord Jesus! Fill me with Your supernatural courage, hope, and grace until the day I see You face-to-face. In Christ’s all-powerful Name I pray, Amen!

MAP OF THE 7 CHURCHES Around 96 A.D., the Apostle John was exiled to the rocky Greek island of Patmos in the Aegean Sea. From this prison island, he received a breathtaking vision of Jesus Christ—who dictated 7 letters for John to send to believers in Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey).

These early Christians faced crushing pressure and fierce persecution under Emperor Domitian. So Jesus wrote to encourage, correct, and strengthen His Church.

Revelation was sent as a circular letter along the ancient Roman postal route in Asia Minor. It would have been delivered 30 miles by boat from Patmos to the bustling seaport of Ephesus, where John had once pastored.

The Ephesian church would read it aloud, then send it to fellow believers in Smyrna… Pergamum… Thyatira… Sardis… Philadelphia… and finally to Laodicea.

This wasn’t random. The mail route formed a horseshoe-shaped circuit— ensuring every church heard Jesus’ words in sequence. Think of each letter as a postcard from Patmos: short, vivid, and packing a powerful punch!

Why 7?

In biblical symbolism, 7 means complete or perfect. These 7 churches represent the whole Church—in every place, in every age. Revelation was written to them then… but its message is for us now.

Get Ready to Explore On this journey, we’ll walk ancient streets, explore archaeological ruins, and hear Jesus’ words in their original context. But this isn’t just history— Revelation is a living word. Expect fresh insight on what it means to live faithfully for Christ in a world increasingly hostile to faith.

PATTERN OF THE 7 LETTERS Each of the 7 letters Jesus sends to His churches follows a special format—a divine pattern. We’ll see this same structure repeated again and again as we walk through each city on our tour. Here’s the pattern—using Ephesus as our example:

1. CHRIST | “This is Who I Am” Each letter opens with Jesus introducing Himself with a unique title—something that connects directly to that city’s challenges.

“These are the words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand and walks among the seven golden lampstands.”

—Revelation 2:1 To Ephesus, Jesus says, I’m the One walking in the middle of My Church! He’s moving among the lampstands—right there in the thick of it with His people.

2. COMPLIMENT | “Here’s What You’re Doing Well” Before correction comes commendation. Jesus gives each church a kind of “spiritual performance review.”

“I know your deeds, your hard work and your perseverance. I know that you cannot tolerate wicked people… You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary.”

—Revelation 2:2–3 Ephesus, you’ve been hard-working, persevering, and rejecting false teaching. Bravo!

Jesus sees your diligence and dedication.

3. COMPLAINT | “But I Have This Against You” After the applause, Jesus points out the problem.

“Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first.”

—Revelation 2:4 Ouch. You’re so busy serving, defending the truth, and standing against error… that you’ve lost something precious: your First Love. That’s a danger for anyone who has walked with Jesus a long time—when your faith grows older, your heart can grow colder. You can still go to church, read your Bible, and serve faithfully… but lose your passion for Christ.

4. CORRECTION | “Here’s How to Fix It” Jesus never just leaves a church with just a rebuke—He always gives a roadmap back.

“Consider how far you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first.”

—Revelation 2:5a Three steps to correct the problem: REMEMBER your first love… REPENT or turn around… and REDO the things you did at first. Re-engage in Bible study. Re-invest in prayer. Take a fresh risk to share your faith.

5. CONSEQUENCE | “If You Don’t, Here’s What Will Happen” If they refuse to change course: “If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place.” —Revelation 2:5b Translation: A church with no love has no light to shine in a dark world. So Jesus warns them: If things don’t change in Ephesus, it’s lights out for their church!

6. CONQUER | “A Promise to the Victors” Each letter ends with a special reward for those who conquer or overcome.

“To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.” —Revelation 2:7 Conquering Christians will experience Eden restored—life forever in God’s presence.

As you read each letter in each city, take note of this special pattern: Christ → Compliment → Complaint → Correction → Consequence → Conquer Jesus follows the same rhythm in every letter… except for two.

Philadelphia and Smyrna receive no rebuke—only words of comfort and encouragement, as they faithfully endured intense suffering.

EPHESUS THE LOVELESS CHURCH

REVELATION 2:1-7 “To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: These are the words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand and walks among the seven golden lampstands.

I know your deeds, your hard work and your perseverance. I know that you cannot tolerate wicked people, that you have tested those who claim to be apostles but are not, and have found them false.

You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary.

Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first.

Consider how far you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first.

If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place.

But you have this in your favor: You hate the practices of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.

Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.”

WELCOME TO EPHESUS Welcome to the first stop on our journey through the Seven Churches of Revelation—Ephesus, the crown jewel of ancient Asia Minor. With a population of over 250,000, this was no dusty village. Ephesus was the financial center of the ancient world. A booming metropolis— cosmopolitan, commercial, and completely consumed by pagan culture.

It had a massive seaport buzzing with trade, a stadium seating 24,000 sports fans, and two colossal temples dedicated to the gods of the day: one to Artemis (Greek goddess of sex & fertility) and the other to Domitian (Emperor of Rome). At one temple, people worshiped sex and at the other they worshiped politics.

Not so different today, is it?

Yet in the heart of this pagan stronghold, a vibrant church was born.

And in Revelation 2, Jesus writes them a letter with a warning and an invitation.

7 GOLDEN LAMPSTANDS Each church in Revelation is symbolized by a golden lampstand. To John’s Jewish audience, these lampstands would have looked like a menorah—seven branches of hammered gold, each holding a flame fed by oil.

In the Temple, the menorah was the only source of light. In Revelation, it represents the Church as the light of the world.

Jesus is pictured walking among the lampstands— tending the flames and strengthening His Church in times of trouble.

He is present in their darkness.

He is present in yours.

THE CHURCH’S REPORT CARD Let’s start with the praise. The church in Ephesus would have gotten a 5-star Yelp review—there was a lot to like about this spiritual community!

Jesus commends the Ephesian believers for their: •

Doctrinal discernment

Rejection of false teachers (specifically, the Nicolaitans)

Hatred for sin

•

Endurance for the sake of His name

This church wasn’t flaky—it was faithful. These were all-in, committed believers. Steadfast in service. Unshakable under persecution.

And they had every reason to buckle.

LIFE IN SIN CITY Ephesus was a pagan culture flooded with temptation. You couldn’t walk down the street without passing a pagan statue, temple, or idol-saturated shrine. Two temples towered over the city: 1. The Temple of Artemis (a.k.a. Dirty Diana) Twice the size of a football field, this was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Artemis (her Roman name was Diana) was the Greek goddess of sex & fertility. Her statue was covered in breasts and people worshiped her with wild music, sexual orgies, drunkenness, and temple prostitution. Artemis was the sex symbol of the ancient world—and business was booming. Wealthy Ephesians even kept their money in the Temple– confident their riches would be guarded under Diana’s protection.

2. The Temple of Domitian In contrast, the second major temple celebrated power—not pleasure. The Emperor Domitian demanded to be worshiped as kurios (“lord”). Citizens had to bow before his statue, sprinkle a pinch of incense on the altar, and proclaim “Caesar is lord”—or face punishment. To reject Caesar was to risk your career, your reputation, or even your life.

Domitian’s cult was Rome’s form of political control. Refusing to worship the Emperor marked you as an atheist and traitor.

What it is: A monumental tomb and library built in 110 A.D. for Roman senator Celsus. The famous façade is spectacularly preserved with double columns and statues embodying Wisdom, Knowledge, Intelligence, and Valor.

Why it matters: Third-largest library in the ancient world (after Alexandria and Pergamum). Once held over 12,000 scrolls.

Curetes Street

What it is: Main road connecting upper and lower Ephesus, lined with statues, temples, shrines, and shops. Beautiful mosaics, inscriptions, and preserved colonnades remain today.

Why it matters: The apostle Paul likely walked this street daily (Acts 19), spreading the Gospel amid a culture filled with idols and imperial cult worship.

School of Tyrannus What it is: Likely a rented lecture hall or philosophical school used by Paul for teaching.

Why it matters: Became the base for Paul’s two-year discipleship and outreach ministry (Acts 19:9–10).

Paul taught there daily, and “all the residents of Asia heard the word of the Lord”—a model of sustained, strategic evangelism.

Temple of Hadrian What it is: Ornate Roman temple honoring Emperor Hadrian. Prime example of emperor worship and imperial propaganda.

Why it matters: Early Christians in Ephesus refused to worship the emperor as “lord,” a defiance that brought persecution.

Revelation 2:3 praises them for enduring hardship for Christ’s name.

Relief of Nike

What it is: Marble carving of Nike, Greek goddess of victory (and athletic footwear!). She holds a laurel wreath— awarded to those who are victorious.

Why it matters: In Revelation 2:7, Jesus calls the church to “overcome” (Greek: nikaō). True victory isn’t Roman power—it’s faithfulness to Christ, even unto death.

The Great Theatre What it is: A 25,000-seat amphitheater carved into Mount Pion, originally Greek (3rd century B.C.) and later expanded by the Romans. It was used for dramas, gladiator fights, and public assemblies.

Why it matters: Site of the public riot in Acts 19, where angry crowds opposed Paul’s preaching, shouting, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!” The clash illustrates Gospel confrontation with idolatry.

Temple of Artemis What it is: One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World—a massive temple to Artemis, goddess of fertility. Twice the size of a football field, it was Ephesus’ pride, filled with temple prostitution and idol worship. Only one column remains today.

Why it matters: Paul’s preaching threatened Artemis’ grip, sparking a riot in Acts 19. The gospel disrupted an entire economy built on idolatry.

What it is: Luxury Roman homes with vibrant frescoes, mosaics, and private courtyards—climate-controlled and stunningly preserved. A rare look inside ancient upper-class life.

Why it matters: Early Christians likely gathered in homes like these. Paul mentions “the church in their house” hosted by the wealthy patrons Aquila and Priscilla (1 Corinthians 16:19).

Basilica of St. John What it is: A 6th-century basilica located outside the city with panoramic views of ancient Ephesus and the surrounding countryside.

Why it matters: Built over the traditional burial site of the Apostle John, “the disciple whom Jesus loved,” and author of Revelation.

Spiritual All-Stars In the middle of this idol-infested city, the Ephesian church held fast to faith—refusing to bow to Diana or Domitian. They served faithfully and stood strong under pressure.

Where did they get their spiritual strength? This church was led by a dream team of pastors who raised up spiritual fathers and mothers, grounding them in God’s Word.

It was well-taught, deeply rooted… and yet—Jesus sees something they can’t.

Paul

The Apostle Paul established the Church in Ephesus (A.D. 52–55), laying a strong foundation that made it one of Asia Minor’s most influential churches.

John

The “apostle of love” later shepherded this church & wrote Revelation to them.

Paul’s protégé Timothy later pastored here—and was beaten, stoned, and martyred in Ephesus around A.D. 97.

Mary

According to tradition, the mother of Jesus was part of the congregation here!

Even the strongest churches can drift if love grows cold.

THE EPHESUS DRIFT

Despite their faithfulness… they had forgotten what it was all about.

They were busy doing the right things for Jesus—but their being with Jesus had dried up. Their hearts had grown cold. They didn’t lose their salvation, but they left their First Love.

What started as passion had become performance.

What started as relationship had become routine.

What started as delight had turned into duty.

To paraphrase a modern song, in essence, Jesus said: “You lost that lovin’ feelin’!” It’s the same relational drift that can happen in a marriage… or a ministry… or our personal walk with Christ. We don’t fall out of love. We slowly drift away from it. This is a warning for all who have known Jesus for a long time. If you’re not careful: As your faith grows older, your heart can grow colder!

And Jesus, with eyes of fire, warms their hearts and lovingly calls them back: “Remember… Repent… and Return to the things you did at first.” —Revelation 2:5

Rekindling the Flame

Have you lost your heart for your First Love? Good news: Jesus says it’s never too late to get it back! He lovingly offers the Ephesians a 3-step remedy to rekindle their passion: 1. Remember – Think back to when your love for God was most alive. Warm and passionate. Do you remember the joy? The intimacy? The thrill when God’s grace first touched your heart?

2. Repent – Turn around. Confess your drift, change your course, and return to Jesus!

3. Redo – Recommit to the spiritual practices that fed your soul: heartfelt worship, extended prayer, serving, reading God’s Word.

This isn’t just a word for ancient Ephesus—it’s a wake-up call for modern-day believers.

As your faith grows older, your heart can grow colder.

LIGHTS OUT? What a winsome invitation Jesus offers! But He also gives a sober warning: “If you do not repent, I will remove your lampstand from its place.”

—Revelation 2:5 Translation: If something doesn’t change, it’s “lights out” in Ephesus! If we lose touch with Christ’s love, how can we shine His light in a dark world? Without love, ministry becomes machinery. Worship becomes noise. Orthodox belief becomes nit-picking legalism.

Jesus won’t bless a loveless church—no matter how impressive our programs are or pure our theology is.

Here’s the Hope!

“To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.” —Revelation 2:7

At the end of the letter, Jesus extends a beautiful promise to all who repent and re-kindle their first love. A return to Eden.

A renewed intimacy with God. Eternal life in Paradise.

When we rekindle our intimacy, Jesus offers us the fruit of the Tree of Life itself.

Look carefully: Just beyond the ruins of Domitian’s fallen temple, a pomegranate tree grows—its branches spreading, fruit glistening in the sun.

Shhh, be quiet. Can you hear Jesus speaking to your soul? It’s as if His Spirit is whispering: “Return to me. Come home to your First Love. Abide in Me… and you will bear much fruit.”

Revelation promises human history will end where it began in Genesis: With the Tree of Life and the invitation to walk alongside Christ.

WELCOME TO SMYRNA Welcome to ancient Smyrna—modern-day Izmir, Turkey. Imagine walking out of a subway station to suddenly find yourself in an ancient Roman marketplace from the time of Jesus. That’s Izmir—a stunning mix of old-world ruins and modern-day hustle, set right on the dazzling coast of the Aegean Sea. Ancient Smyrna was a bustling seaport city along the trade route from Persia to Rome. It was known for its commercial wealth, beauty, and fierce loyalty to Caesar. But hidden within its marble arches and marketplace (Agora) was a community of early Christians whose devotion to Jesus made them targets of painful persecution. In the first century, Smyrna was a city where Christians were being crushed.

Jesus Can Relate

Jesus Can Relate Jesus introduces Himself in Revelation 2:8-11 as: “The First and the Last, who died and came to life again.”

This special greeting from Jesus had a deeper meaning because Smyrna was a city that literally “died and came back to life.” Smyrna was destroyed around 600 BC by the Lydians under King Alyattes, who razed the city during a military campaign. It lay in ruins for over 300 years before being beautifully rebuilt around 290 B.C. by the successors of Alexander the Great. So yes—Smyrna was literally a city that “died and came back to life again.”

With this personal greeting, Jesus was saying: I know your story. I’ve lived it myself. I died and rose to life again too.

THE FRAGRANCE OF FAITHFULNESS Smyrna’s name came from its production of myrrh, a sweetsmelling resin used for perfumes and anointing bodies for burial.

The city’s very name alluded to a sweet smell in death—a reference that wasn’t lost on the early Christians suffering under Roman persecution. Myrrh releases its fragrance only after it has been crushed—a powerful picture of the persecuted church here.

Smyrna is one of only two churches in Revelation that receive no complaint from Jesus. No rebuke, no correction—just words of comfort and encouragement. Why? Because their faith was being tested under crushing pressure (thlipsis in Greek).

“In Smyrna, the Gospel carried a double aroma— to the enemies of Christ, it reeked of treason and death; but to the faithful and to God Himself, it was the sweet aroma of eternal life.”

CHRISTIANS BEING CRUSHED

Jesus continues: “I know your afflictions and your poverty—yet you are rich!”

The Christians in Smyrna were being afflicted in three ways: •

Roman Persecution | Believers faced imprisonment and execution for refusing to worship Caesar as Lord

•

Religious Slander | Local Jews viewed the early Christians as a threat, shut them out of the local synagogue, and spread vicious rumors

•

Satanic Opposition | Jesus says Satan himself was inciting the fierce persecution

Christians in Smyrna were viciously slandered as cannibals (because of Communion, rumors spread that they ate the body & drank the blood of their God). They were accused of being atheists (for rejecting Roman gods and false idols) and practicing incest (they only married their “brother or sister” in Christ).

As a result, Christians were physically attacked, socially rejected, and marginalized in the marketplace. Many lost their jobs, others lost homes, and some lost their lives.

Still, they held firm to their faith.

A HERO OF THE FAITH: POLYCARP Let me introduce you to one of my heroes: Pastor Polycarp, the Bishop of Smyrna. At age 86, Polycarp was arrested and ordered to renounce his faith in Christ. When threatened with execution, he was given one last chance to deny Jesus. To which Polycarp famously said: “For 86 years I have served Him, and He has never done me wrong. How can I now blaspheme my King who saved me?”

So they burned Polycarp at the stake. When the flames didn’t touch him, soldiers stabbed him to death in front of cheering crowds. Polycarp became the most famous martyr in Smyrna. Martus is the Greek word for “witness,” from which we get martyr. His courageous faith inspires us today.

FAITH UNDER PRESSURE Jesus never said following Him would be easy or pain-free. He tells the church: “Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer... Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you life as your victor’s crown.”

The Olympic games were held in Smyrna every 5 years. A “victor’s crown” (stephanos) was given to the winners of each contest– the ancient world’s equivalent of a gold medal.

The stephanos was a wreath made out of

laurel leaves that symbolized victory. Jesus promises this eternal crown to believers who remain faithful to Him in spite of pain, suffering, and even persecution in this life.

What is the Second Death?

In Revelation 2:11, Jesus tells His followers they won’t be hurt by the “second death.” What does that mean? God created humans as spiritual beings, so our souls live on even after our physical bodies die.

According to the Bible, after death, our souls either spend eternity with God in heaven or are separated from Him in hell. Revelation 20:14 says, “The lake of fire is the second death,” referring to this eternal separation from God. Every person faces a choice: •

Born Once, Die Twice: Born physically, then experience both physical death of our body and the spiritual death of our soul.

•

Born Twice, Die Once: Born physically and then spiritually reborn—what Jesus calls being “born again” in John 3:3—so you only face physical death.

When you turn from sin and put your faith in Christ, you’re spiritually reborn into God’s eternal family. This means that while Christians face physical death in this life, their souls won’t experience the second death in eternity. Instead, God promises everlasting life in heaven for all who trust Jesus as their Lord and Savior (John 3:16).

In simple terms: if you’re born once, you die twice; but if you’re born twice, you die once. It’s a powerful reminder of the hope and assurance we have through faith in Jesus!

Modern Witnesses Did you know: Smyrna is the only one of the seven churches where a Christian community still survives today? In a country that’s 99% Muslim, modern Izmir still has a small, faithful remnant of orthodox Christians. The sweet aroma of their faith—like myrrh—still lingers centuries later.

Pray for the Persecuted Church Many Christians around the world today still face intense persecution. From North Korea to Nigeria to Iran, courageous men and women risk their lives daily for Jesus. As a global Christian, it’s our duty and privilege to pray for our brothers and sisters in the persecuted Church who are bearing up under enormous pressure.

Read Hebrews 13:3. Will you stop & pray for them?

And if you’re facing pressure in your life today— maybe you’re feeling the weight of a chronic illness, a prodigal child, or financial strain— remember: Jesus sees your pain, promises His presence, and will reward your faithfulness. Just like myrrh releases its fragrance when crushed, your life gives off the aroma of Christ when you endure suffering with faith.

Heaven sees you. Jesus is cheering you on.

And there’s a crown waiting at the finish line.

The Holy Spirit can give you strength to

get through what you’re going through. Like the believers in Smyrna, you can be at your best even when life is at its worst.

“Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. The one who is victorious will not be hurt at all by the second death.”

(Revelation 2:11) So hold on. Stay faithful.

PERGAMUM THE COMPROMISING CHURCH

REVELATION 2:12-17 “To the angel of the church in Pergamum write: These are the words of him who has the sharp, double-edged sword. I know where you live—where Satan has his throne. Yet you remain true to my name. You did not renounce your faith in me, not even in the days of Antipas, my faithful witness, who was put to death in your city—where Satan lives.

Nevertheless, I have a few things against you: There are some among you who hold to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to entice the Israelites to sin so that they ate food sacrificed to idols and committed sexual immorality. Likewise, you also have those who hold to the teaching of the Nicolaitans. Repent therefore! Otherwise, I will soon come to you and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.

Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give that person a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to the one who receives it.”

WELCOME TO PERGAMUM Situated 1,000 feet above the surrounding plain, Pergamum was a city carved into a mountaintop. Its acropolis was crowned with temples, theaters, and altars to Greek gods like Dionysus (god of wine), Athena (goddess of wisdom), Asklepios (god of healing), and above all, Zeus (king of the gods).

Pergamum was no backwater town—it was the capital city of the Roman province of Asia Minor. It held the “right of the sword,” meaning it had authority from Rome to execute criminals. This earned it the nickname “City of the Sword.”

So when Jesus addresses the church in Pergamum as the One “with the sharp, double-edged sword,” He’s not being poetic. He’s going to war for His people.

WHERE SATAN HAS HIS THRONE The most prominent landmark in Pergamum was the Altar of Zeus—a massive stone structure perched atop the acropolis. In the first-century, this pagan altar resembled a giant throne. Animal sacrifices burned continuously upon it, filling the air with smoke.

Jesus wasn’t being metaphorical when He said Pergamum was the place “where Satan lives.” Jews in the ancient world understood pagan deities as demons. Zeus, the king of the gods, was a demonic counterfeit.

His throne in Pergamum became a symbol of satanic power.

The reality of this satanic influence stretches into modern history. In the 1930s, Adolf Hitler modeled his Nazi rally platform in Nuremberg after the Altar of Zeus. From that very stage, he announced the Nuremberg Laws and the “Final Solution”—the Holocaust.

Ancient Throne, Modern Horror The reality of demonic influence didn’t end in ancient Pergamum. In the 1930s, Adolf Hitler had his chief architect model his Nazi rally platform after the Altar of Zeus. Stone by stone, the Pergamum altar was transported from Turkey to Germany and is on display today in Berlin.

From this replica “throne” Hitler mesmerized crowds,

announced

the

Nuremberg

Laws

stripping Jewish people of their rights. On this altar, Hitler laid the groundwork for the “Final Solution”—the Holocaust (a word that means “burned animal sacrifice” in Greek).

The parallel is chilling: On Pergamum’s altar, burnt sacrifices were made to the demon god Zeus. Centuries later, from the Nazi altar in Nuremberg, Hitler sanctioned the Holocaust— only this time, the burnt sacrifice was 6 million Jews.

History confirms what Revelation reveals: Satanic power is real.

FAITHFUL WITNESS: THE MARTYRDOM OF ANTIPAS “My faithful witness, Antipas.” —Jesus (Revelation 2:13) In verse 13, Jesus calls Antipas “my faithful witness, who was put to death in your city– where Satan lives.” Who was Antipas? According to early Christian tradition, Antipas was a leader in the Pergamum church who refused to compromise with the pagan culture around him. For his steadfast faith, he was sentenced to death in one of the most brutal ways imaginable.

The method? The Brazen Bull—a life-sized hollow statue made of bronze. Victims were locked inside the hollow belly of the bull, and a fire was lit underneath. As they burned alive, their screams echoed through an intricate system of pipes that made it sound like the bull was bellowing. The cruelty was designed not only to kill, but to torture and mock its victims.

Antipas’ martyrdom left a lasting witness in Pergamum. Even in the face of this horrific execution, he did not renounce his faith. His name is remembered not just in history—but in heaven.

THE TOUCH OF THE SERPENT Another source of temptation was the Temple of Asklepios, the snake god of healing. At night, sick people would sleep in the temple while pagan priests released snakes that would slither over their bodies in the dark. Physical healing was attributed to “the touch of the serpent.”

And yet, Revelation calls Satan “that ancient serpent” (Revelation 20:2)— who lures people away from the true healer, Jesus Christ.

Staying faithful in

Pergamum was tough: medicine, religion, and politics were all infected by satanic influence. Even meat sold in the marketplace was often sacrificed to idols. To live in Pergamum was to navigate a spiritual minefield.

Mixed Marriage: The Church’s Compromise The name “Pergamum” itself means “mixed marriage.” And that was the problem: The Christians were marrying their biblical beliefs to pagan practices—resulting in a compromised Christian witness. In other words, the church wasn’t just in Pergamum– there was too much Pergamum in the church!

“Nevertheless, I have a few things against you: There are some among you who hold to the teaching of Balaam... and the Nicolaitans.” (Revelation 2:14-15) In Pergamum, Satan had infiltrated the church with false teachers who deceived Christians into thinking they could follow Jesus while also engaging in immorality and idol worship.

Who Were The Nicolaitans?

The Nicolaitans were likely followers of a man named Nicolas, possibly the same Nicolas mentioned in Acts 6:5. Once a deacon in the early church, he drifted from the faith and began teaching that Christians could indulge in pagan rituals and immoral behaviors without consequence. The Nicolaitans taught that Christians could believe in Jesus… and still worship Zeus or Athena on the side.

Receive Communion on Sunday… and get drunk at Dionysus’ temple on Friday.

Be married… and mess around sexually like the rest of your pagan neighbors. As a result, many believers were led astray.

The name “Nicolaitans” perfectly described these false teachers. “Nico” means “conquer,” and “laity” means “people.” The Nicolaitans “conquered the people” by diluting God’s truth—offering a convenient, compromised faith.

This false teaching twisted grace into a license for sin. In Paul’s letter to the Romans, he attacked this heresy of “greasy grace.”

What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?

(Romans 6:1-2) Christ followers are to called to put to death their sinful nature and stand apart from the world. As the Spirit & Word remind us: “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. (Romans 12:2)

WEAPONS OF SPIRITUAL WARFARE Christians in Pergamum were on the frontlines of a fierce battle for the hearts and minds of believers. That spiritual warfare continues today. In his attempts to deceive and destroy Christians, Satan has three primary weapons:

PERSECUTION This is suffering for the sake of Jesus. When Satan cannot lead a believer astray through comfort, he’ll try to crush them through pain. Faithful martyrs like Antipas (Pergamum) and Polycarp (Smyrna) stood firm in the face of torture and execution.

SEDUCTION This is making sin look beautiful. It’s the subtle temptation to blend in with the world, to compromise on biblical conviction for the sake of comfort or acceptance.

DECEPTION This is believing a lie instead of the truth. Jesus highlights this in verses 14–15 by referencing the false teachings of Balaam and the Nicolaitans. These lies dilute the pure Gospel and lead Christians into lives of cultural compromise.

The Underground Church in the Middle East & Asia suffers persecution to this day.

However, in the American church,

persecution is rare. Why is that?

Could

it be that persecution isn’t necessary in the West because seduction and deception are working just fine? When modern

believers

mix

their

faith

with

cultural lies—whether it be the seduction of political idolatry, sexual immorality, or a watered-down, sin-free prosperity gospel— their faith becomes neutered. Jesus’ Church is no longer a threat to Satan because it looks like the rest of the world.

In Pergamum, Jesus pulls back the curtain to expose the enemy! His warning is urgent: “Repent therefore! Otherwise, I will soon come to you and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.” (Revelation 2:16) God’s Word is a double-edged sword—sharp, piercing, and liberating. It exposes lies and sets captive people free! Jesus doesn’t want to shame His followers; He wants to liberate us from bondage.

The Christian life is not a playground–it’s a battleground!

HIDDEN MANNA To His followers who resist compromise and remain faithful, Jesus offers nourishment that no idol, no worldly comfort, and no false promise can match: “To the one who is victorious, I will give some of the hidden manna.”

(Revelation 2:17) After God delivered the Israelites from slavery in Egypt (Exodus 16), He fed them miracle bread from heaven (manna) to nourish them in the wilderness. In the same way, Jesus invites us to feed on the true Bread of Life: “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry.” —Jesus (John 6:35) Christ alone satisfies the hunger of the human soul.

This “hidden manna” is His very presence—spiritual sustenance in a world starved for meaning.

A White Stone with Your New Name Jesus’ letter to Pergamum closes with a powerful promise: “To the one who is victorious... I will also give that person a white stone with a new name written on it.” (Revelation 2:17) In Pergamum, white marble was commonplace. Visitors can still find white stones all over the acropolis today. What’s the meaning behind this mysterious white stone?

In Greek legal system, an accused criminal stood before a panel of judges.

Each judge held 2 stones—a white stone & a black stone. After the judges weighed the evidence, they delivered their verdict by dropping one of the stones inside an urn. A black stone meant you’re guilty. A white stone meant you’re innocent… And you were set free!

With this white stone, Judge Jesus is promising that faithful believers are declared “not guilty” in the sight of God! Through faith in Christ, they are deemed “innocent!”—fully forgiven of their sins and set free by Christ Himself!

But the white stone means even more. In the ancient world, white stones were also used as an invitation to a wedding banquet. Your name would be engraved on the white marble—just like a place card at a reception. “I will give that person a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to the one who receives it.” (Revelation 2:17) Did you know? Jesus has a “new name” waiting for you in Heaven?

A secret name known only to God that will one day be revealed to you? The white stone is your personal invite to your wedding to Christ. Jesus is the bridegroom, and when we come into full union with Him in Heaven, He’ll reveal our new name. A name you will bear for all eternity. Your new name is a sign of God’s love, intimacy, and eternal belonging!

Isn’t that beautiful? The white stone with your new name represents His Spirit saying: You are known. You are chosen. You belong.

So when you see a white stone in your hand, remember: It’s a reminder of the love you share with Christ now… and for all eternity in heaven.

Stay faithful, beloved.

You are innocent. You are chosen.

You are loved—invited to the Wedding Supper of the Lamb!

THYATIRA THE TOLERANT CHURCH

REVELATION 2:18-29 “To the angel of the church in Thyatira write: These are the words of the Son of God, whose eyes are like blazing fire and whose feet are like burnished bronze. I know your deeds, your love and faith, your service and perseverance, and that you are now doing more than you did at first.

Nevertheless, I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophet. By her teaching she misleads my servants into sexual immorality and the eating of food sacrificed to idols. I have given her time to repent of her immorality, but she is unwilling. So I will cast her on a bed of suffering, and I will make those who commit adultery with her suffer intensely, unless they repent of her ways. I will strike her children dead. Then all the churches will know that I am he who searches hearts and minds, and I will repay each of you according to your deeds.

Now I say to the rest of you in Thyatira, to you who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned Satan’s so-called deep secrets, ‘I will not impose any other burden on you, except to hold on to what you have until I come.’

To the one who is victorious and does my will to the end, I will give authority over the nations—that one ‘will rule them with an iron scepter and will dash them to pieces like pottery’—just as I have received authority from my Father. I will also give that one the morning star. Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”

Would You Stand Up for Jesus… If It Meant Losing Your Job? Let’s start with a question: Would you stand up for Christ… if it cost you your career?

That was the real-life dilemma for Christians living in the ancient city of Thyatira. Thyatira was a working-class city full of tradespeople and artisans. To make a living, workers had to join trade guilds—like modernday labor unions. But these guilds didn’t just set wages. They also threw monthly parties where members were expected to toast Apollos with wine, eat meat sacrificed to idols, and indulge in sexual immorality.

This created a serious dilemma for Christians. If they went along with cultural expectations, they compromised their faith in Christ. But to say “no” was economic suicide—they’d lose their job and social standing.

That’s why Jesus shows up with fire in His eyes and feet of bronze. Despite being the smallest church, Thyatira receives Jesus’ longest letter.

And it’s deeply personal.

Jesus Writes to the Workers In a city full of workers—textile makers, leather workers, bronze smiths—Jesus shows up as the ultimate authority, the “Son of God.” That title was a direct challenge to Apollos, the local patron deity, known as—you guessed it—“the son of god.” But Jesus reminds them (and us): “I’m the real deal.”

Jesus then begins with a praise report: “I know your deeds, your love and faith, your service and perseverance, and that you are now doing more than you did at first.” (Revelation 2:19) Thyatira was a vibrant, growing church!

If this church was

reviewed on Google, it would get 5 stars! Loving, faithful, and quick to serve others. Make no mistake: Small churches matter to Jesus. It’s not about size—it’s about faithfulness. But after these compliments, Jesus shares a complaint.

WHAT IS THE JEZEBEL SPIRIT? “Nevertheless, I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophet. By her teaching she misleads my servants into sexual immorality and the eating of food sacrificed to idols.”

(Revelation 2:20) Uh-oh. Here comes the hard truth: While the church was strong in service… it was weak in discernment. They tolerated false teaching under the influence of a woman Jesus calls “Jezebel.”

Tolerance. In our world, it’s often held up as the highest virtue. But in Jesus’ eyes, tolerance of sin is not the same as compassion for sinners. He’s not criticizing their love—but their loose standards.

So who’s this “Jezebel”? Most likely a nickname. Not the original Old Testament queen, but a woman with similar spiritual influence. In short: She was leading believers to compromise—especially sexually and spiritually.

In the Bible, Jezebel was the wicked queen married to King Ahab of Israel (1 Kings 16–21). She led the people into idolatry, sexual immorality, and even child sacrifice to pagan gods like Baal and Molech. She also silenced God’s prophets and used her political power to advance false religion.

In Revelation 2, Jesus uses “Jezebel” symbolically to refer to a false teacher inside the church who was seducing Christians to compromise morally and spiritually.

The “Jezebel spirit” today refers to: •

A spirit of manipulation and control

•

False teaching that mixes truth with deception

•

Encouragement of sexual sin under the guise of spiritual freedom

•

Tolerance of unbiblical lifestyles or theology, often in the name of progress, love, or liberation

But Jesus doesn’t tolerate this double-mindedness. He demands purity from His Bride, the Church. This spirit must be discerned, resisted, and cast out by the power of the Holy Spirit.

WHEN WORK BECOMES WORSHIP

Thyatira’s economy revolved around its trade guilds— textile workers, metal smiths, leather makers, bakers. To work, you had to join a guild. Each guild had its own idol, typically Apollos. Meetings were held in pagan temples: •

The menu? Meat sacrificed to Apollos

The vibe? Heavy drinking leading to debauchery

•

The entertainment? Guild gatherings often devolved into orgies with sex workers

•

The cost of abstaining? Losing your job, your reputation, your future

Enter Jezebel: a false teacher whispering, “It’s okay.

Jesus

understands.

It’s

just

business.

Faith

and

fornication—why not both? You can love God and still blend in.”

Sound familiar?

Modern-Day Thyatira A Christian trader on Wall Street confides: “If I don’t go out drinking or to strip clubs with clients, I risk losing business.” Others face tension over what to watch, what to support, or what to stay silent about—all for the sake of keeping their jobs or social standing.

Jesus sees the compromise. And He’s not indifferent.

“I will cast her on a bed of suffering, and I will make those who commit adultery with her suffer intensely, unless they repent of her ways. I will strike her children dead.”

—Revelation 2:22-23 Whoa, this is serious. Jezebel’s “bed of sin” becomes a “bed of suffering.” Notice the progression: Spiritual adultery always leads to spiritual sickness and eventually to spiritual death.

Because Jesus loves His church, He won’t let Jezebel’s deception go on forever.

“As a Christian… are you more tolerant than Christ?”

What are we letting into our homes, minds, and churches under the banner of love, progress, or relevance?

EYES LIKE BLAZING FIRE

In Thyatira, Jesus introduces Himself as the Son of God with: Eyes like blazing fire | Jesus sees everything. Our hearts, motives, and secret sins are laid bare by His penetrating gaze.

Feet like burnished bronze | Jesus judges rightly. Like a King, He stamps out sin in His church with glowing feet of molten bronze.

Jesus isn’t being harsh. He’s being holy.

He says: “I gave her time to repent… but she was unwilling.”

(Revelation 2:21) Repentance isn’t shame—it’s freedom. To repent (Greek: metanoia) means to change your mind, to turn around and go in a new direction.

Jesus isn’t condemning Christians who have compromised, He’s calling them to return home to His truth!

WHAT IS SYNCRETISM? Syncretism is the blending of different religious beliefs, cultural philosophies, or spiritual practices into a single system. In simple terms, it’s the idea that you can “mix and match” God with other gods—or truth with lies—to create a personalized faith that avoids conflict.

In Thyatira, Christians were tempted to sync up their worship of Jesus with pagan sacrifices, sex with prostitutes, and getting drunk at guild meetings.

They tried to live with one foot in Christ and one foot in the culture—and Jesus called it out.

Today, syncretism sounds like: “All religions basically teach the same thing.

Jesus works for me, Buddha works for you.”

“I read the Bible, but I also believe in karma, crystals, and horoscopes.”

“My girlfriend and I live together, but we both serve God at church.”

The danger? When you mix God’s truth with Satan’s lies, you don’t end up with balance.

You end up with bondage. A false gospel that is no gospel at all.

The Bible calls us to purity of worship: “You shall have no other gods before Me.” (Exodus 20:3) In every age—including our own—Jesus calls His people to separate themselves from cultural idols and follow Him alone.

JESUS VS JEZEBEL The truth is: You can have Jesus. Or you can have Jezebel.

—But you can’t have both.

Only the Spirit of Jesus offers freedom from the lies of Jezebel.

“For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.” (Romans 8:13) The only way to live a holy life is through the power of the Holy Spirit.

By the Spirit, you can choose love instead of lust. By the Spirit, you can crucify your flesh, instead of caving to temptation. By the Spirit, you can live a pure life in a pornographic world. By the Spirit, you can exercise self-control and live a holy life!

Holiness just means your life looks more & more like Jesus. The problem is: Too many Christians want the Spirit, but they don’t want the Holy! But you can’t live a holy life without the Holy Spirit! If you try to take on the Jezebel spirit in your own strength, you’re dead meat. But the spirit of Jezebel is no match for the Holy Spirit of Jesus!

Hold On, I’m Coming!

What is Jesus’ final encouragement to Christians living in a Jezebel culture?

Two words: Hold On! “To the rest of you in Thyatira… who do not hold to her teaching… hold on to what you have until I come.” (Revelation 2:24–25) When compromise with the world feels easier… HOLD ON! When your friends call you lame for not partying… HOLD ON! When your co-workers call you a prude… HOLD ON! When your family makes fun of you for believing God’s Word… HOLD ON! When you feel all alone… HOLD ON UNTIL HE COMES!

The Morning Star Jesus promises two rewards to faithful believers: “To the one who is victorious and does my will to the end, I will give authority over the nations… I will also give that one the morning star.”

(Revelation 2:26-28) •

Authority over the Nations | Faithful believers will rule and reign with Christ in His coming Kingdom!

The Morning Star |

In the last chapter of Revelation, Jesus says:

“I am the bright morning star” (Revelation 22:16). We don’t just get the Kingdom… We get the King Himself!

The arrival of the Morning Star signals: A new day is dawning! Just as the world is at its darkest hour, the light of Christ will appear!

So hold on, beloved… Hope is on the way!

REVELATION 3:1-6 “To the angel of the church in Sardis write: These are the words of him who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead. Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have found your deeds unfinished in the sight of my God. Yet you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their clothes. They will walk with me, dressed in white, for they are worthy. The one who is victorious will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out the name of that person from the book of life, but will acknowledge that name before my Father and his angels. Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”

When we first landed in Turkey, my wife Colleen was on a mission: “I want to buy something authentic!” So we hit the Turkish markets and saw a sign that made us laugh out loud: Genuine Fake Watches!

Only in Turkey! The stalls were filled with designer knockoffs—fake Rolex watches, imitation Gucci handbags that looked and felt almost identical to the real deal. Colleen picked up a fake Prada purse and said with surprise, “It’s hard to tell the difference!”

That’s the Church in Sardis. Jesus said: “You have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead.”

(Revelation 3:1) From the outside? The church here looked like the real thing. Active. Busy. Influential.

But inside? It was spiritually asleep. Almost dead.

Welcome to Sardis—home to Genuine Fake Christians!

• Capital of Lydia | Sardis was once the thriving capital of the ancient kingdom of Lydia, reaching its peak under King Croesus in the 6th century BC. • Birthplace of Coinage | The world’s first gold and silver coins were minted here around 600 BC. • Citadel Stronghold | The fortress of Sardis stood 1,500 ft high atop sheer cliffs. It was thought to be unconquerable until it fell due to complacency.

• Famous for Wealth | Ancient writers said Sardis “wallowed in luxury.” Its affluence lulled the city—and the church—into spiritual apathy.

• Destroyed Twice | Sardis was destroyed twice—by a surprise military attack and a devastating earthquake. Each time Sardis rebuilt, but never fully recovered its glory.

• Modern Site | Today, Sardis lies in ruins near the village of Sart, Turkey.

Visitors can see the acropolis and an impressive Roman-era gymnasium and synagogue.

KING OF THE HILL Ancient Sardis was perched high atop a mountain in western Turkey, surrounded by steep cliffs. To see the ruins of the ancient citadel, you’d need good hiking shoes for a steep climb.

At the time Revelation was written, Sardis had a reputation for strength and security. In fact, Sardis had been the capital of the ancient kingdom of Lydia, and its most famous king—Croesus—was legendary for his immense wealth. Check this out: Sardis is where money was first minted!

The Lydians were the first civilization to mint silver and gold coins—the world’s first standardized currency—around 600 B.C. To protect their wealth, the Lydians built a fortress—The Citadel of Sardis—high on an acropolis 1,500 feet above the valley. With sheer cliffs on all sides, it was considered impenetrable. So when the King Cyrus of Persia attacked Sardis, the city appeared safe… or so it seemed.

Until one night, a soldier keeping watch along the wall fell asleep.

Historians say that his helmet dropped from his head and rolled down the hill. Persian soldiers camping below watched as he snuck out a hidden door to retrieve it. That’s how Sardis’ enemies discovered the secret passageway into the citadel—and Sardis was soon conquered.

Jesus references this moment in Revelation 3:3: “If you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come to you.”

It was a wake-up call to a sleepy, complacent city—and an even sleepier church.

WAKE-UP CALL “I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead. Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die…”

(Revelation 3:1-2) This is the most sobering diagnosis Jesus gives in all seven letters: “You look alive, but you’re actually dead.” Sardis was filled with spiritual sleepwalkers—people going through the motions of religion, but lacking real relationship with God. What went wrong in Sardis?

There was a gap between their reputation and their reality.

Reputation | “We’re alive! We’re thriving!”

Reality | “You’re dead on the inside.”

Sardis was one of the largest, wealthiest churches in the region.

They had momentum. Influence. Reputation. But Jesus saw the truth beneath the surface: “Your deeds are unfinished… you’re not complete in my eyes.” (Revelation 3:2) What was missing? The Holy Spirit.

That’s why Jesus introduces Himself in Revelation 3:1 as “Him who holds the seven spirits of God…”

Religious activity is not the same as spiritual vitality.

WHAT ARE THE SEVEN SPIRITS? “These are the words of him who holds the seven spirits of God…” (Revelation 3:1) This phrase can sound puzzling at first. Are there seven Holy Spirits?

No! The “seven spirits of God” is symbolic language representing the Holy Spirit in His fullness and perfection. In biblical numerology, the number 7 represents completeness—the Holy Spirit operating in all His complete divine power.

This concept of the sevenfold Spirit comes from Isaiah 11:2, a prophecy about the coming Messiah: “The Spirit of the Lord will rest on Him— the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord.”

These seven attributes (Spirit of the Lord - wisdom - understanding counsel - might - knowledge - fear of the Lord) describe the complete, sevenfold work of the Holy Spirit.

So when Jesus tells Sardis, “I hold the seven spirits of God,” He’s reminding them: “I’m the source of the spiritual power you’ve lost. Return to Me—and be filled again.”

THE DANGER OF DEAD CHURCHES Have you ever been inside a dead church? Where the Spirit has left the building? Europe is filled with them. Once-vibrant cathedrals, now empty shells. CNN and the New York Times have reported on dead churches repurposed for: •

Cafés & restaurants

•

Recording studios

•

Skate parks

•

Bars & nightclubs

•

Even frat houses!

What happened? These churches didn’t suddenly die overnight. They started out strong, but over time drifted from dependence on the Holy Spirit. They settled for polite, cultural Churchianity—a plastic faith. In short, they became Genuine Fakes.

Having a form of godliness, but

lacking its power.

The church didn’t conquer the world—the world conquered the church.

Now there’s nothing left but bricks and stained glass.

Are You a Genuine Fake?

In 2 Timothy 3:5, Paul warns: “In the last days… people will have a form of godliness but deny its power.” Sadly, that describes Sardis and some churches today.

They have religion… but no relationship.

Good works… but no grace.

A polished performance… but lack power.

They know how to look spiritual… but lack the fresh fire of the Holy Spirit!

A church without the Holy Spirit is just a pile of bricks. A believer without the Spirit is just a body.

Authentic Spiritual Fruit

The authenticating mark of a Spirit-filled Christian isn’t putting on a religious face—it’s producing real fruit. Spiritual fruit of the variety Paul describes in Galatians: “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.” (Galatians 5:22-23) Jesus doesn’t want fake Christians who play church; He wants anointed vessels budding & blossoming with the fruit of the Spirit! Only the Holy Spirit can produce the genuine character of Jesus in a believer’s life.

Too many Christians today want the Spirit, but not the Holy. But you can’t be holy without the Holy Spirit! It’s a package deal.

A Remnant Wearing White Although the church in Sardis was on life support, Jesus said there’s still hope!

“Yet you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their clothes.

They will walk with me, dressed in white, for they are worthy.”

(Revelation 3:4) White represents purity and holiness.

Ladies, when does a woman wear white? On her wedding day!

Even in Sardis, there was a Spirit-filled remnant ready for the return of Christ the Bridegroom! That should encourage all of us. No matter how dead a church may look, in every generation, there is a remnant—a handful of followers who remain faithful to Jesus—who are in the world, but not of the world. Jesus says: In my eyes, they’re wearing white, worthy of heaven!

The Robe of Righteousness Jesus closes his letter by promising: “The one who is victorious will, like them, be dressed in white.”

(Revelation 3:5) In Roman times, when a king conquered a city, he held a victory parade and rode through the city dressed in white robes. He was followed by the conquering warriors who fought bravely alongside him—and they wore white robes too! That’s what King Jesus is promising here: “If you stay faithful to Me, you’ll share in My victory. And one day, I’ll clothe you in my robes of righteousness!”

Not because of our good works—but because of His grace. Faithful Christians are clothed in Christ’s righteousness.

The Book of Life In ancient times, cities kept a written register of their citizens.

When a person died, his name was removed from the book. Jesus closes with this promise to His faithful followers: “I will never blot out the name of that person from the book of life, but will acknowledge that name before my Father and his angels.”

(Revelation 3:5) The Book of Life is Heaven’s registry. A written record of all those who truly belong to King Jesus. Is your name written in the Lamb’s Book of Life? Your name isn’t written in ink—but in the shed blood of Jesus Christ.

Can you hear what the Spirit is saying? Trust Jesus as your Savior.

Surrender fully to the Holy Spirit. And God will give you eternal life—a living, breathing faith now on earth… and everlasting life with God forever in Heaven!

PHILADELPHIA CHURCH OF THE OPEN DOOR

REVELATION 3:7-13 “To the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: These are the words of him who is holy and true, who holds the key of David. What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open.

I know your deeds. See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut. I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.

I will make those who are of the synagogue of Satan, who claim to be Jews though they are not, but are liars—I will make them come and fall down at your feet and acknowledge that I have loved you. Since you have kept my command to endure patiently, I will also keep you from the hour of trial that is going to come on the whole world to test the inhabitants of the earth.

I will write on them the name of my God and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which is coming down out of heaven from my God; and I will also write on them my new name. UNSHAKABLE FAITH

Ancient Philadelphia was a beautiful but brittle city. Built on a volcanic fault line, it suffered frequent tremors, earthquakes, and aftershocks that kept citizens living in constant fear. After a devastating earthquake in A.D. 17, many Philadelphians abandoned their homes to live outside the city in tents, returning only by day to do business. People were constantly going back and forth in Philadelphia—in and out of the city. When tremors hit, they’d flee.

Once the aftershocks were over, they’d go back in.

That’s why Jesus encourages them: One

day, you’ll live in God’s eternal city and “Never again will they leave it” (Revelation 3:12).

Life in Philadelphia was always shaking—but in the middle of the chaos, Jesus writes a letter full of confidence and calm. To this faithful but fragile church, Jesus offers no words of criticism, no correction—only encouragement.

Just like Smyrna, Philadelphia receives no rebuke from Jesus. Instead, He speaks words of life and hope to a small, struggling congregation that had held tightly to His Word.

3 KEYS TO THE CITY Jesus opens His letter by introducing Himself with royal imagery: “These are the words of him who is holy and true, who holds the key of David. What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open.” (Revelation 3:7) This verse holds three powerful symbols: 1. The Key of David This is a reference to Isaiah 22:22, where a steward of King David’s palace is given a massive key that grants access to every room in the royal palace. Jesus is saying: “I’m the true King. The master of the house. I hold the key that opens every door in God’s Kingdom!”

It means Christ alone has the authority to open and close doors in a believer’s life. The door of salvation! Doors of blessing! Doors of opportunity! If you belong to Jesus, no human power can shut you out of the riches God has made available to you through Christ. Jesus holds the key to Heaven’s throne room—and the doors He opens, no man can shut!

2. The Open Door The “open door” is the central image of this letter: “See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut.” (Revelation 3:8) In Scripture, an “open door” usually refers to a brand-new opportunity to spread the Gospel. In the city of Ephesus, Paul wrote: “There is a wide-open door for a great work here, although many oppose me.” 1 Corinthians 16:9 Paul looked around a city full of pagan people and thought: “What a tremendous opportunity! God’s opening a door for me to share the love of Jesus with those who don’t know Him yet!” When Paul traveled to Troas, he said: “When I came to the city of Troas to preach the Good News of Christ, the Lord opened a door of opportunity for me.” (2 Corinthians 2:12) In Philadelphia, Jesus was opening two doors: •

The Door of Salvation | Up to this point, the people in Philly only knew about the Greek gods & goddesses (Zeus & Artemis & Dionysus) who were angry & unpredictable.

They hadn’t met the loving, grace-filled God who sent His Son to die for them on the Cross. They didn’t understand salvation isn’t based on good works– but on grace alone! Through faith alone! In Christ alone! This open door was offering Philly residents a fresh chance to know Jesus.

The Door of Service | Jesus was also opening a door for His followers to sacrificially serve their neighbors. The first door was about putting faith in Christ—the second door was about putting faith into action!

3. The Pillar in God’s Temple “The one who is victorious I will make a pillar in the temple of my God.” (Revelation 3:12) Ancient Philadelphia had a special custom to honor citizens who served the city well. When a person had devoted their life to serving the community, the city erected a pillar in one of the temples with their name inscribed upon it. The pillar was a lasting memorial to their legacy.

Jesus says a similar tribute will happen for those who help build His Church.

All that remains of ancient Philadelphia are three massive pillars from St. John’s Church—a Byzantine basilica built in the 6th century. They serve as a visual reminder of the pillars mentioned in Jesus’ letter to the church here.

Think about how a church is constructed spiritually. The cornerstone of the Church is Jesus Christ. His Word is the firm foundation. But the pillars are His people! The humble men and women who support the work of the ministry. A church is only as strong as the people willing to sacrificially serve others with love—to cradle babies, teach God’s Word to children, lead groups, feed the hungry, and serve the poor in Jesus’ Name.

The truth is: In many churches, there simply aren’t enough pillars—servant leaders willing to spend themselves in the service of others. Jesus is saying: I don’t just want my people to GO to church—I want them to BE the church!

Jesus promises His devoted servants in Philadelphia: You shall never be shaken. Your name will never be forgotten in Heaven!

THE COST OF FOLLOWING CHRIST “I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.” (Revelation 3:8) The word Jesus uses for “little strength” implies weakness or weariness. The Christians in Philadelphia were tired, but they held fast. They stayed loyal to Jesus—even when doors were slammed shut in their faces. Jesus references a painful reality in verse 9: rejection by their own community.

may

sound

antisemitic, but it’s not. Remember: John who wrote Revelation was Jewish. Jesus who is speaking is Jewish. He’s not criticizing the people in Philadelphia for being Jewish—but for being hostile toward Christians. Jewish believers who decided to follow Christ were being kicked out from the local synagogue.

In the first century, when Jews first converted to Christianity, they stayed part of their local synagogue. At first, the Romans assumed Christianity was just another sect of Judaism. But at this point in the Early Church, Christianity was beginning to splinter off from Judaism. As believers grew more bold in their witness—claiming Jesus was “Lord & Savior” of the whole world (not Caesar)—the Jews grew fearful of Roman persecution. So they cursed them as heretics and excommunicated the Christians from the synagogue. They had the door of fellowship slammed shut in their face.

Make no mistake: The Christians in Philly

were painfully rejected. Alienated from their family & friends.

There’s always a price to pay to faithfully follow Jesus, isn’t there?

Batel’s Story This kind of rejection still happens today. Batel is a Jewish man who put his trust in Jesus through the ministry of Liquid Church. He wrote: “Being a new believer is a very lonely road, especially when your community shuns your Jewish messiah. You helped me realize how much love and grace Jesus shows us, the Jewish people, every time. When you talked about Christ’s second coming, I felt the love of Jesus… how much He still loves my people. Even when we turned our backs to Him, He will still come for us. It made me realize how important it is for me, as a Jewish believer, to be vocal about my love for Jesus and my faith.

I am getting baptized this month, and I had a lot of fear about what it would mean to my community, and your sermon has helped me understand how God is calling me to be a witness for my people, the Jewish people. Jesus helped me pray for my enemies, he helped me release the hate, and it is because of him that I feel inner peace.”

Batel’s sacrifice mirrors the struggle of those first-century Jewish believers.

Following Christ often costs us something.

Will You Walk Through the Door?

Jesus is calling. Not just to believe in Him, but to put your faith into action and serve others in His Name. You can become a pillar in the House of God! And when you do, a day is coming when you’ll receive your heavenly reward: “I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take your crown.” (Revelation 3:11) Christ holds the key. The doors to Salvation & Service are wide open. The only question is: Will you walk through them?

Pilgrim Prayer Lord Jesus, thank You for being the One who holds the key of David. You are holy and true, and the doors You open, no one can shut. In a world that shakes and shifts, You are my steady foundation.

I praise You for the doors You’ve opened in my life—doors of salvation, healing, and purpose.

Help me to remain faithful when I feel weak. Strengthen me by Your Word and fill me with boldness to never deny Your Name. Thank You for the hope of being a pillar in Your eternal temple. Teach me to walk through every door You set before me—with courage, humility, and joy.

Holy Spirit, may I serve others with the strength You supply, so that through my life, many more will walk through the door of salvation. Write Your name on my heart, and use my life to build Your Church.

LAODICEA THE LUKEWARM CHURCH

REVELATION 3:14-22 “To the angel of the church in Laodicea write: These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God’s creation. I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth. You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.

Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent. Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.

To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat down with my Father on his throne.

Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”

WELCOME TO THE CITY OF STATUS Today we arrive at the final stop on our journey through the 7 Churches of Revelation: the city of Laodicea. This is the last letter Jesus writes to His Church—His final words before the vision shifts from Earth to Heaven in Revelation 4. In this town, Jesus had one more urgent message for His people—a spiritual wake-up call to those whose hearts have grown lukewarm.

Welcome to ancient Laodicea, a city perched in the Lycus River Valley of Asia Minor, famous for its wealth, fashion, and medicine.

When we visited, Colleen and I woke up in our hotel to the sight of hot air balloons rising silently over the desert mountains. This region has rugged terrain, stunning vistas, and the unmistakable allure of adventure. This is a city that dazzled in its day, and if you were a first-century fashionista, financier, or physician, Laodicea was your dream town.

HOT OR COLD? Laodicea was one of three sister cities in the region, along with Hierapolis and Colossae. Hierapolis, famous for its hot mineral springs, was essentially the spa capital of the region. Colossae was nestled in the hills, home to refreshing streams of cold mountain water.

Laodicea was rich, but there was one thing the city didn’t have: fresh water. The Lycus River was polluted, so Laodicea had to pipe it in from its sister cities through aqueducts. Hot water came from Hierapolis; cold water from Colossae. By the time it traveled through mineral-lined pipes to Laodicea, the water arrived lukewarm—smelly and foul-tasting.

Lukewarm Water, Lukewarm Faith Jesus uses this precise imagery in His piercing message to the Laodicean church. “I know your deeds,” He says. “You are neither hot nor cold. I wish you were one or the other! But because you are lukewarm, I’m about to spit you out of my mouth.”

(Revelation 3:15-16) The original Greek translation is even more graphic: “vomit you out of my mouth” Translation: The lukewarm faith of this church made Jesus want to puke!

And that was Jesus’ diagnosis of their faith. There was little passion, no zeal. Laodicea was spiritually complacent. Their wealth & cushy lifestyle made them spiritually soft.

They were going through the motions and practicing a half-hearted faith.

HOT vs. COLD Hot = A passionate faith that warms up cold hearts Cold = Refreshing grace that quenches thirsty souls Lukewarm = Half-hearted, nauseating religion And that was Jesus’ diagnosis of their faith. There was little passion, no zeal. Laodicea was spiritually complacent. Their wealth & cushy lifestyle made them spiritually soft. They were going through the motions and practicing a half-hearted faith.

FASHION & FINANCE Laodicea was a church afflicted with what we might call “Affluenza.”

Wealthy, stylish, and self-sufficient, the Christians here believed they had it all together. Don’t judge too quickly; this town had a lot in common with modern America. Laodicea was famous for three things: •

FINANCE | It had a global banking center like Wall Street.

Laodicea was a thriving financial hub with a booming economy. If you were a banker or trader, there was money to be made in this city.

How wealthy was Laodicea? When an earthquake leveled the city in 60 A.D., Rome offered financial assistance to help rebuild it. Laodicea turned down the money and paid for it themselves!

•

FASHION | Laodicea had a clothing industry famous for glossy, black wool! Like Hollywood hipsters, people in Laodicea loved to wear black. Residents were very style-conscious and competed for the Best Dressed award.

•

MEDICINE | Laodicea had a world-famous Medical School that invented a special eye salve used to treat eye diseases. They exported this eye powder all over the world for health & healing.

With that cultural context, re-read what Jesus says to those living in Laodicea: You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked.

—Jesus, Revelation 3:17 Even though they were surrounded by money… Jesus says they’re spiritually bankrupt.

Though their city produced eye salve… Jesus says they’re spiritually blind.

Although they wore the latest fashions… Jesus says they’re spiritually naked.

In other words, their spiritual condition before God stood in ironic contrast to their worldly success.

“You can be a raging success in the eyes of the world—and an utter failure in the eyes of God.”

Modern Laodicea Laodicea still exists today—in our cities, our churches, and often in our own souls. Living in the West, we’re conditioned to chase comfort, wealth, status, and security. Think about it: We carefully curate our Instagram feeds… wear designer sneakers… sip $10 lattes… and lease luxury cars to signal we’ve arrived. But Jesus isn’t impressed by what’s in your wallet or on your wrist.

He’s looking at your heart.

As Christians purchased by God with the shed blood of Jesus, our identity is not in what we wear, drive, or drink– our identity is in Christ! That’s the only status that truly lasts. As Paul writes in Galatians: “As for me, may I never boast about anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. Because of that cross, my interest in this world has been crucified, and the world’s interest in me has also died.” (Galatians 6:14) So go ahead: drink that smoothie… wear that hoodie… name your dog “Chardonnay” if you must.

Just remember: Your worth isn’t in your

wallet. It’s in the One who was nailed to a cross for you! That’s true greatness in the eyes of God! Spiritual success is the opposite of the world’s Prosperity Gospel. Think about it: Jesus lost his life… yet gained the world. Laodicea gained the world… but lost their soul.

Dr. Jesus’ Prescription So what’s the cure for lukewarm faith?

Dr. Jesus diagnoses their spiritual

blindness and offers a prescription only the Great Physician could write: I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see. (Revelation 3:18) •

“Gold refined in the fire” | Jesus counsels them to pure spiritual character forged in the fire of trials & adversity, not a life of comfort & ease.

“White clothes to wear” | To people who wore black, Jesus offers an alternative: His own robe of righteousness to cover their shame (Isaiah 61:10).

•

“Salve for your eyes” | To see the world clearly with Jesus’ eyes of love and compassion!

This is not harsh condemnation—these are words of loving correction. “Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline,” Jesus says. He’s speaking like a loving parent to a wayward teen.

Tender, but firm.

Don’t miss this: As lost as they are, Jesus still feels love for Laodicea.

Just like He feels love for you.

Knock Knock… Who’s There?

Jesus ends with a beautiful invitation– one of the most famous verses in all of Scripture: “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.” (Revelation 3:20) Can you imagine? Jesus is locked out of His own church! He’s on the outside looking in at Laodicea– knocking, waiting for someone to invite Him back in.

That’s the invitation Jesus gives to Laodicea—and to you.

ART SPOTLIGHT In 1853, a British artist named Holman Hunt was inspired to paint Revelation 3:20 on canvas. His famous painting “The Light of the World” imagined Jesus standing outside a country home, knocking on the front door. Look carefully: Do you notice anything missing from the door? Critics pounced, assuming Hunt forgot to paint a doorknob! The omission wasn’t a mistake– it made a point: The door only opens from the inside.

Hunt understood something profound. The door to the human heart is something only you can open. Jesus is a gentleman and will never force His way in. Instead, He gently knocks. Whether the door opens or stays closed is completely up to you.

From Drift to Distance Five out of the seven churches of Revelation spiritually drifted from a living faith in Jesus. The drift doesn’t happen overnight. It’s gradual and happens over time. Notice the sequence: The drift began in Ephesus, where love for Christ grew cold… then Pergamum, where compromise crept in… then Thyatira, where sin was openly tolerated… then Sardis, where spiritual sickness set in… until it finally culminated in Laodicea, where Jesus wasn’t just locked out of His church– He was shut out of their hearts!

But still, Jesus knocks. He knocks on the doors of hearts that have grown cold… lives that have pursued the wrong dreams… souls that are thirsty for something more.

Today, He knocks on your door.

The question is: Will you let Him in?

“Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”

(Revelation 3:22)

Prayer of Commitment for Lukewarm Christians If you recognize areas of compromise, complacency, or spiritual drift in your walk with Christ, use this prayer to recommit your heart to Him: “Lord Jesus, I confess I’ve grown lukewarm. I’ve let comfort, success, and distraction replace my passion for You. Today I repent. I turn from my idols and open the door again to You. Rekindle the fire of Your Spirit in my heart. Make me hot with love, boldness, and obedience. Refresh my soul with the living water of grace. I want to walk closely with You again– closer than I ever have before.

Today, I re-commit my life to Christ. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

For New Believers If you’ve never opened the door of your heart to Jesus, now is the time. Becoming a Christian is as simple as ABC: •

A = Admit your Sin Sin isn’t a popular word, but it’s reality in our broken world.

God created you & me for perfection, but we’ve all fall short of God’s holiness. The Bible says: “If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.” (1 John 1:8)

•

B = Believe in Jesus Out of fierce love for you, God sent His Son to die on the cross in your place. Jesus was the perfect substitute for your sin.

Three days after His crucifixion, Jesus was raised from the dead

by God’s power– claiming victory over Satan, sin, and death!

God now freely offers eternal life to all who put their trust in Jesus as Lord & Savior: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

•

C = Commit Your Life Commit to follow Christ with your whole heart. To follow Jesus, you’ll need to let go of old hurts and sinful habits, but you won’t be alone. God will put His Spirit inside of you and give you a new power to live for Christ until He returns. And our Church is here to love and help you– we’re a family following Christ together!

Personal Prayer To commit your life to Christ, pray these words from your heart: “Lord Jesus, thank You for loving me. I admit I’ve sinned and need Your forgiveness.

I believe You died on the cross for my sins and rose from the dead. Today, I open the door of my heart. Come in and be my Savior and Lord. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit.

I love You and give You my whole life from this day forward. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

EPHESUS | Reflection Questions Acts chapter 19 describes several dramatic episodes from the Apostle Paul’s ministry in Ephesus. Read over Acts 19 to explore the explosive impact of the Gospel in this strategic city.

Read Acts 19:17-20. Ephesus was a center for the practice of black magic and the occult. What did some of the early converts to Jesus do with their sorcery scrolls?

What does this reveal about the power of God’s Word and the cost of revival?

Read Acts 19:23-41. Paul’s preaching sparked a riot in Ephesus. How did the Gospel disrupt the idol-making business and economy of Ephesus? What does this conflict reveal about the tension between gospel truth and cultural idols? Where do you see similar tensions today in modern culture or your own life?

Ephesus was a city of temptation where believers had to fight for stay faithful amid idols, immorality, and political pressure. Yet Jesus’ biggest concern wasn’t outside threats—it was their fading First Love.

PERGAMUM | Reflection Questions 1.

Pergamos (also called Pergamum) means “mixed marriage.” The Christians there were in danger of mixing their biblical beliefs with pagan practices. In what areas of life are you most tempted to mix your faith in Jesus with cultural lies? (ie., sexuality, politics, spending habits, etc.)

Read Ephesians 6:12. What are the 3 weapons used by Satan in his spiritual war against believers? Where do you see persecution, deception, or seduction at work in the modern church today?

In Thyatira, Jezebel was a false teacher luring Christians into idolatry and immorality (Rev 2:20-21). She probably got her nickname from Queen Jezebel– the wicked wife of King Ahab. Flip to the Old Testament and read 1 Kings 16:29-33. How did Queen Jezebel spiritually influence King Ahab and the nation of Israel?

History records that the city of Sardis was conquered by the Persian army because the people had grown complacent and fell asleep. How does this historical context make Jesus’ warning in Revelation 3:2-3 especially fitting?

Look up the following verses: Matthew 24:43-44, 1 Thessalonians 5:2, Revelation 16:15. How do these verses describe the nature and timing of Jesus’ return?

Why do you think Jesus compares His return to a thief in the night? If Christ’s return could happen at any moment, how should that affect how we live today?
