As we enter the final quarter of the 2021-2022 Lions Year, the District Governor Team and your other District 5 SKS Cabinet members are busy completing those outstanding tasks that will keep your District strong and sustainable for the incoming District Governor and his Cabinet. Important tasks to be sure, which include:

• Membership contacting District clubs to reach out to those club leaders to check up on the health of the club, any issues the club may be having, and offering assistance in the areas of membership and service reporting, training, and financial management of their clubs. Planning is underway for the district to engage our own LCI designated “Extension Specialist” Lion Aaron Nagy, of the Yorkton New Generation Lions Club, to undertake membership drives in Weyburn and White City. We lost the Weyburn Lions Club at the beginning of this year and need to put some hard work in to try and regenerate a healthy club in that city. Our sights are also focused on having a Lions Club established in White City, with some preliminary contact and marketing having already been done by your District Governor Elect Lion Alvin Matechuk.

• Training – This is an ongoing task that is at the heart of preparing our Lions at the club and district levels to be better prepared to carry out their duties no matter what position they hold within our District structure. We will be concentrating on involving our Club Presidents to notify them of the issues they need to deal with to be informed within their club, as well as the availability of leadership opportunities needed by their District within the Zone Chair roles that they can become part of.

• Succession – The training mentioned above leads to this very important part of our District’s success moving forward. Running a district that has over 1,500 Lions within 74 Lions Clubs distributed over 160,000 sq. kms is no small job. The organizational structure in place to manage the district is a sound one. However, we desperately need a few key positions filled if we are to continue to provide good management of the district on behalf of all our Lions. I would ask that all Lions listen to the message being sent out to you by our District Governor Team and members of our Global Action Team (GAT) when you are asked to participate in some of the positions that require filling. We have had some great Lions in these positions, but they have been doing the jobs for some very long periods of time and it is time that we have a changing of the guard – lets all share the load. More hands really does mean less work for us all!

I want to thank all of our Lions who have stepped up to purchase a Saskatchewan Lions Foundation (SLF) 50/50 ticket in support of purchasing the much-needed anesthesiology equipment for the new Children’s Cancer Clinic being constructed within the Regina General Hospital, scheduled to be in operation in June of 2022. Please make sure all of your sold ticket stubs and any unsold tickets are sent back to the SLF at: Saskatchewan Lions Foundation, Box 23025 Market Mall, Saskatoon SK S7J 2G0

The draw date has been changed to April 9, 2022, so keep your support going by making personal or club donations to the SLF-marked “Childhood Cancer Clinic” and send them to the above mailing address. Donations are adding up, with many clubs donating substantially. Let’s get this job done and help our kids when they need it the most. We all know someone, or a family, touched by cancer. Thank you very much!

Visitations have started coming in. To date, my schedule is: March 21, a visit with Regina Central Lions; April 7 is Fort Qu’Appelle Lions with 8 new members being inducted; April 11 is Riverhurst Lions with 2 new members being inducted; April 19 is Estevan with 2 new members being inducted; April 27 is Lumsden – their 61st Anniversary and 5 new members being inducted; May 10 is Regina Lakeside Lions. On April 6, First Vice District Governor Elect Lane Johnson will be visiting the Richmound Lions Club. Great progress by many of our clubs. Keep those visitations coming in – your District Governor Team is looking forward to visiting with you.

Thank you for the support and hard work you have shown me and our team. Keep doing what you do so well

The invasion of Ukraine at the end of last month has captured the attention of Canadians and Lions, as many of us are descendants of Ukrainian settlers and still have family in what many of our parents called “the old country”. I am a first-generation Ukrainian Canadian myself, my father having come to Canada at the age of four in 1929 from the Zhbarazh region east of Ternopil. Lions Clubs in Ukraine – as well as Poland, Slovakia and other neighbouring countries – are assisting victims of the conflict with immediate needs. Our International Foundation is there to help. Donations to the Lions of Canada Fund for LCIF can be designated specifically for the Refugees and Displaced Persons Fund and qualify for LCIF Campaign 100 credits. For more information on how you can help, contact District Coordinator Beryl Bauer or go to the Lions of Canada Fund for LCIF website Many of our clubs have already held fundraisers for Ukraine and more are being planned. Thanks to all of you!

Since the last Lion’s Pride was published, the very difficult decision to cancel the Yorkton Provincial Lions Convention was made by the District Governors on the recommendation of the host club convention committee. The primary reason for the recommendation was disappointing registration numbers which put the event at risk of a substantial deficit. All of the registrants are to be refunded 100 percent of their registration fees, and an accounting for receipts and disbursements is to be provided to the Districts in due course. As a consequence of the provincial event’s cancellation, our District still needs to meet its constitutional requirements for electing the incoming governor team and update its constitution, so we will have a one-day mini-convention here in Rosthern on Saturday, April 9 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Registration has been set at $30 per person to cover the lunch and facility costs. Please see the Registration Form and link to the Program on Page 15.

Our Cabinet met via Zoom on March 19 to discuss and ratify the decisions made regarding conventions, review incoming District Governor Beryl’s plans for the new Lion year, and discuss progress on Membership, Service and Leadership – the three components of the Global Action Team (GAT). In the area of Membership, Extension Specialist Aaron Nagy is working with several communities to revitalize clubs or create new ones. With regard to Service, we can see that training is required for better reporting, and we need ideas for ways to serve that are safe for our Lions as well as the people they serve. And on the Leadership front, we are making plans for training Zone Chairs, Certified Guiding Lions, and Club Officers. Watch for more details! And you can check out resources through the Learn tab on the Lions Clubs International website or go to YouTube and search for “Lions Clubs training”.

Lion Bernie and I, as well as First Vice District Governor Beryl Bauer, travelled to Minot, North Dakota the March 26 weekend for the first in-person meeting of the MD5 Council of Governors since 2019. The Vice District Governors had training sessions on Friday, with the Council meeting taking place on Saturday. I encourage members to attend the MD5 Convention to be held at the Cypress Hills Resort in May to find out more about what our Multiple District does – and more importantly, to meet some really wonderful people and exchange ideas. I had baked a couple of pies and some cookies to take to Minot to auction off for LCIF Ukraine relief on Saturday evening during our social time. Three pies, four packages of cookies, a small gift basket, and a pair of socks raised US$750 for the cause.

We look forward to visiting with the Lions of 5SKN on April 9 in Rosthern!

MARIANNE KRAMCHYNSKY DG Marianne Kramchynsky
The Council of Governors met in Minot the last weekend of March. District 5SKN is thrilled to announce that DG Marianne Kramchynsky was elected as Council Chair for Multiple District 5 for 2022-2023. It has been many years since we had a Council Chair from District 5SKN. WAY TO GO, MARIANNE!

in Canada, it would be nice to see some members in our District register and attend; a great holiday in Canada and a great Convention experience can be had! Why not YOU and your partner? The crowd won’t be as huge as other conventions –six to eight thousand expected – because Covid concerns are still limiting attendance from people from outside Canada. (Visa issues!)

Our

vision:

Planning and training for the 2022-2023 Lion’s Year continues. The 3 Virtual FDG Group 20 sessions I spoke about in the last issue are basically complete. (Actually 6 sessions as there were two per weekend.) A great deal was learned in every one of them. There was also some training in Minot this past weekend before the MD5 Council meeting. Both were educational, and the fact we could attend in person in Minot and get back in to Canada by getting the simple Antigen test at a pharmacy the day we left for home, made it fairly simple and not too costly.

Our group leader has arranged for 2 short extra Group 20 meetings to help with any possible hiccups prior to the LCICon in Montreal in June.

Youth: We will serve youth through improved access to quality education, vital health services, inclusive social and recreational opportunities, and positive development programs.

Disaster relief: We will deeply engage in disaster relief efforts and in preparing for, and responding to, natural disasters whenever and wherever they strike.

Speaking of LCICon – since the Convention is

Our foundation will expand our commitment to our communities, making an even greater global impact, with a focus on vision, youth, disaster relief and humanitarian causes.

Humanitarian causes: We will sponsor and deliver programs addressing the distinct needs of at-risk and vulnerable populations such as the elderly, the disabled, females, orphans and others disproportionately impacted by social and economic factors and requiring special services.

I have been getting some help with possible Cabinet “holes”, but am still short mainly in Zone Chair positions. There will be a reasonably short Zone Chair training session provided in late June for those who put their name forward – likely virtual, so you may not even have to travel. Let’s remember that we can’t keep Lions strong in the District without participation at all levels. Past DGs are no longer

vision: We will lead the charge to rid the world of infectious blindness, reduce avoidable blindness and visual impairment, and improve overall quality of life by providing services to the blind or visually impaired.

able to serve as Zone Chairs so this is a great learning/involvement opportunity for newer and long serving members alike. There will also be short but helpful virtual training provided for incoming Presidents, Secretaries and Treasurers in late April. (Before seeding!) Watch for notices.

Lastly, SEE YOU AT THE DISTRICT 5SKN CONVENTION APRIL 9th in Rosthern, RIGHT? Get registered and send in the names of your delegates for voting privileges.

Hello Lions, Is spring finally here? The snow is melting and is almost gone and we can see all the work that spring is going to bring us.

With most of the restrictions lifted, from what I hear, many clubs are starting to meet in person. Hopefully service projects will start and Lions can get back to doing what Lions like to do, and what Lions do best – serve your community.

oUR CALL To ACTIon

Over the past 100 years, we have proven that Lions united in service can transform millions of lives. As Lions, we serve proudly, empowered by our global foundation. Together, we will be able to serve more than 200 million people a year by 2021. Our goals are expansive and no individual Lion, club or district can take them on alone; but together, empowered by our global foundation, we can. Please support Campaign 100

With meeting in-person and the time of year, make sure your club holds its elections and get the results sent in. Some or most clubs are looking at a change in their officers. If you are a President or Past President and would like to stay involved, we need zone chairs in just about all of our zones. I was a zone chair and found it rewarding. If you would like more details, get in touch with DG Doug or myself.

In the cabinet for next year, we are looking for new cabinet members. The open cabinet positions are: communications chair, recreation and curling, club visitations, pin chair, youth exchange, and Leo chair.

If there is another position on cabinet that may interest you, don’t hesitate to call. Our cabinet members would like to mentor someone new. New faces means new ideas and new ideas make things exciting.

Well, it’s time to sign off for this month – remember, if your club would like to have a visitation, our DG team will do our best to make it happen.

We got started last newsletter with some ideas that could be done within our clubs. It is important to keep our membership up and if we are not DOING anything, why would people want to stay? I am watching the Olympics and they are singing “we can change the world with love!” What a thought for Lions!

We have lonely seniors in our community – wouldn’t it be nice if we planned to make and deliver a free meal for the elderly and drop it off to them? Many have been alone without contact from family and friends. Another way to help communication is to donate tablets to local nursing homes so residents can stay connected. I have heard from many of my friends that have family in these nursing home, that the residents are lonely, with many having not seen their loved ones for a time. Letters could be sent to long-term care homes with news about the community.

There are several things that we can do for our community. My son always gives me the gears about how much wool that I have so I knit some blankets for cancer patients who were having chemotherapy. I was told that they were always needed. If there is wool around – or the clubs can purchase it – make toques, mitts, and scarves for children and others who are on the streets.

One last thought, we need to think about the folks in our communities that we haven’t seen out in a long time. Let’s think about them and give them a call. Hearing a familiar voice can do a lot and give comfort to lift the spirits.

These are ALL Lion’s service projects to help keep the Lions doing what we are here “We serve!”

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR 2021-2022 SASKATCHEWAN LIONS CONVENTION CHAIR

Dear Saskatchewan Lions,

As I’m sure you all know by now, the 2021-2022 Saskatchewan Provincial Lions Convention that was to be held in Yorkton March 18 through 20 was cancelled!

The primary reason it was cancelled was lack of registrations! Perhaps it is was just too soon with COVID restrictions just being relaxed? Perhaps Yorkton is just too far for many to travel that distance? Perhaps Lionism in Saskatchewan is facing some serious challenges? Perhaps it was a combination of all of the above!

The original concept was to have an exciting “new approach”

LEADERSHIP Convention. The Saturday was specifically set aside for that purpose to focus on potential new Lions! Not much point in always preaching to the converted!

In my opinion, what’s important to be addressed very soon is “Transferable Value Leadership”. If any business or organization is going to survive it must have value and an open succession plan. Does your Club have that?

What is the average age of your Club Members? How many are in their 20’s, 30’s or early 40’s? Younger, newer Members are the lifeblood to the continuance of your Club! Each and every one of us must plan to replace ourselves. The alternative is obvious and given a few years most of our Clubs will just fade away. Take a moment to evaluate the Clubs in your District and handicap the situation.

As we get older we tend to withdraw from things and change our perspectives. If you were leaving LIONS what would your HAPPY EXIT look like? What Club traditions would you like to see continued? What succession plans do you have? Lots of food for thought!

If any

organization is going to survive it must have value and an open succession plan. Does your Club have that?

With reference to those that did register for the Yorkton Convention your refund cheques will be processed in short order and a detailed financial accounting will be presented prior to the MD5 Convention. Hope to see you in Cypress Hills.

Yours in Lionism, Lion Don Reed, 2021/2022 Convention Chair / Yorkton Lions Cell: 306-621-9295

LION RON ARNOLD PASSES AWAY

50+ year member of Saskatoon Nutana Lions Club remembered

Ron Arnold passed away peacefully on March 29, 2022 at the age of 85 after complications from a stroke. He was born December 13, 1936 and began his working career with Kresges for 3 and a half years. The remainder of his career was working for Crown Zellerbach (Crown Paper, Unisource) for 33 years in sales and management in Saskatoon. Ron retired at age 56 and started driving for Connoisseur Limousine for the next 15 years. Also a member of IATSE for over 25 years, he worked spotlight and setup at events at the Centennial Auditorium (TCU Place). Ron was a member of the Saskatoon Usadian Executive Association for over 40 years serving as President and Secretary Treasurer.

Ron was a member of the Saskatoon Nutana Lions Club for over 50 years, making many close friends. He served as District Governor and was appointed to a 3-year term as Campaign Coordinator for SightFirst, responsible for raising funds in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and NW Ontario to help prevent blindness. Ron received many honours and awards in Lions including the International Presidents Award, the Melvin Jones Fellowship, and Lions Club International Life Membership and induction into the Saskatchewan Lions Hall of Fame. Ron was very active in Lions, attending over 30 Multiple District Conventions and 12 International Conventions. He had the privilege of serving on the host committee for the 2008 USA/Canada Leadership forum held in Saskatoon. Being a Lions member was important to Ron as he loved serving those in need, and he enjoyed the fellowship of Lionism

Ron was predeceased by his wife Louise in 2004, and is survived: by his children, Dawn and Doug (Tara); grandchildren Kyler (Jody), Brady and Brooke; great-grandchildren Jaxon, Kaycee, Jordyn; brother Gerry in Winnipeg, sisters-in-law Roxanne Dyck of Christopher Lake and Pat Dyck of Kelowna; and numerous nieces and nephews. There will be a private family funeral as per Ron’s request.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Ron’s memory may be made to Lions Clubs International Foundation, or a charity of your choice. The family would like to thank the many friends Ron made through Lions in Saskatoon and around the world; the residents and staff of The Village at Stonebridge, Ron’s home for the last 4 years; and the staff of 7Med at SPH who assisted Ron in his final days. To share your memories of Ron or to send condolences, please visit www.mourningglory.ca

GLOBAL LEADERSHIP

It’s April, and by now clubs should be in the process of electing their officers for 2022-2023. That means that once the officers are elected, the Secretary, the Club Administrator, or the President can record the new officers for 2022-2023 in MYLCI. Recording them in MYLCI should be done before the end of June.

It is also time to schedule training or an orientation for club officers. As a minimum, the Presidents/Vice-Presidents, Secretaries, and Treasurers should complete the Learning Path for their position in the Learn Module in MYLion. There are also courses in the Learn module which you can take concerning meeting management, budgeting, service leadership, the service journey, or project management. To find the courses, sign in to the Lions Member Portal and then choose the Learn Module.

CHURCHBRIDGE LION TO RECEIVE SASKATCHEWAN VOLUNTEER MEDAL

On March 25, 2022 the Government of Saskatchewan announced that Volunteer Medals were soon to be presented to several recipients, including Churchbridge resident and long-time Lions Club member, Bob Bjarnason.

Lion Bob thought the award announcement was a prank at first but was humbled upon hearing the news. He told Yorkton This Week, “There are so many people who do so much in the community. I didn’t think I did that much, but I guess I do.”

Lion Bob has spent 44 years as a member of the Lions Club and is active on multiple community boards including the Churchbridge Seniors Golf Club, a member of the Communities in Bloom and Cemetery Committee, and has been on a local church committee for 35 to 40 years. Being a retired electrician means that his knowledge of the trade has come in handy to aid in the construction of local facilities; he has wired a lot of the new building in Churchbridge – the fire department, curling rink, and swimming pool to name three.

LANIGAN LIONS CLUB – MARCH

The Lanigan and District Music Festival is scheduled for April 25 to 27 (piano) and May 2 and 3 (voice). We will once again provide a $100 scholarship in each category.

LFC (Lions Foundation of Canada) is now focusing its efforts in assisting the people of Ukraine. Our own club is examining our participation in this program. Details of our involvement will appear in the future column.

This isn’t the only award Lion Bob has received for his efforts. About ten years ago, he received the Melvin Jones Fellowship award from his Lions Club in acknowledgement of services to the community.

In true volunteer fashion, Lion Bob plans to continue his volunteering and help out where he’s needed. He has offered some words for the younger generations of volunteers: Get involved in your community –everybody needs help and volunteers.

Lion Bob will receive his Volunteer Medal during National Volunteer Week at the April 26 ceremony at Government House in Regina.

Our Lions Club has some big plans underway and we are looking for help. We are going to be building a Multi-user Pad / Skate Park and pump track at the park. The Multi-user Pad/Skate Park will be used for basketball, pickleball, hockey, skateboarding and anything else requiring a smooth surface. A pump track is a circuit of rollers, banked turns and features designed to be ridden completely by riders "pumping"— generating momentum by up and down body movements, instead of pedalling and/or pushing. We are actively seeking donations and sponsorship for this project. All donations and sponsorship will be recognized. 5SKN LCIF CAMPAIGN 100

Latest news – March 2022

I am very happy to report that many individual members and over 75% of the clubs in 5SKN HAVE supported Campaign 100. That is fantastic!

Donations were coming in fairly steady before the devastation in Ukraine and the subsequent exodus of millions of people to the countries to the south and west of Ukraine, but now our District has really stepped up to the plate. Thousands of dollars have come in with cheques marked ‘Ukrainian Relief’ on the info line. This is happening in OUR district and all others in Canada.

We are seeing daily how neighbouring countries are warmly welcoming millions – mostly women and children – and LCIF has stepped forward with emergency grants to clubs and organizations in those countries. You could log on to lionsinternational.org or LCIFpride.org, and other sites on Google and see lions in action in the Ukraine, in Poland, and in Yugoslavia and see where some of our donations to LCIF go. Kind of warms the heart and makes you proud to say you’re a Lion. Don’t take my references to Campaign 100 the wrong way; Lions have supported hundreds of good causes over the years, and that too warms the heart. And the latest general news about Campaign 100 is also

heartwarming: as of my last check on the LCIF site, USD$274,015,990 has been committed. That’s 91.3% of the $300 million target of the Campaign, and there are 3 months left before the Campaign ends.

Campaign 100

Increasing Service Impact, Expanding Global Causes

I have a dream (just like Martin Luther King did). Mine isn’t as big a stretch. I’m hoping that we get all clubs or at least one member from all clubs to donate to the Campaign! That way, we can say 100% of our clubs supported this critical effort to empower Lions to serve others in need long into the future. If your club or no member from your club has contributed, can we make that goal come true? I repeat. Three months to go.

Lions Clubs Inter national Foundation is proud to announce Campaign 100 : LCIF Empowering Service. We’re celebrating a century of service while working to support Lions’ efforts for the next 100 years and beyond With financial support from Lions, other donors and partners, the foundation is committed to raising US$300 million by June 30, 2021 It’s an unprecedented goal but one LCIF is confident we’ll reach together

What’s the power of your gift to Lions Clubs Inter national Foundation? A safer and healthier world in which Lions have even greater opportunity to:

n Increase service impact in the areas of vision, youth, disaster relief and humanitarian work

Restrictions are easing. Have a little fundraiser or get a few members to throw in a few bucks and send it to me, and I will submit it to the Lions of Canada Fund for LCIF. All donations count toward future Melvin Jones Fellowships for someone in your club or your community. Just another benefit to donating to LCIF.

n Fight diabetes to reduce its prevalence and improve quality of life for those diagnosed

n Expand our global causes to include:

Your District 5SKN LCIF Coordinator, -FVDG Lion Beryl Bauer

• Hunger Growing resources and infrastructure needed to address food shortages, we’ll work toward a world in which no one goes hungry

(Mark cheques Lions of Canada Fund for LCIF and mail to me at Box 93, Lake Lenore, SK S0K 2J0 if you want to help)

• Childhood Cancer We’ll strengthen medical and social services designed to increase life expectancy of children with cancer and enhance quality of life for them and their families

• Environmental Issues Together, Lions and LCIF will protect the environmental health of our global communities
