MAY 2024 NEWSLETTER

Whilst at the time of writing the month of April still has more than a week left to go, for me the highlight of this month has been the visit to the 132nd Convention of Lions, District 103 West, held at Lannion in Brittany, France. For the mathematicians, if held annually they would have begun 25 years before Melvin Jones came on the scene. The

answer is that they hold two conventions each year.

Accompanied by Lion Gail and PDG’s Christine and Peter Rowe, we were well looked after by DG Herve Cadin and his wife Anne-Marie, both of whom attended our own Convention at Croyde Bay in March. Anne-Marie showed us some of the beautiful Breton countryside before I assisted in the ceremonial tree-planting in the company of Lannion’s Mayor, followed by his formal reception. It was a very “full-on” weekend, as immediately thereafter it was necessary to change into my white jacket for their very enjoyable District Friendship evening, where there were no speeches!

An early start the following morning for their Convention proper, starting at 08:30 and concluding at 17:30, but with a four-hour break for lunch! The French certainly know how to deal with such matters. Fortunately, I had the opportunity to address

1
James addressing the 103, West, FRANCE District Convention in France

Convention early in their morning session. Later, after members of Lannion Lions had cleared away we joined them for a buffet and a glass of wine and some very enjoyable conversation.

Before travelling to France, Lion Gail and I attended Truro Lions 53rd Charter lunch at a beautiful venue in Falmouth, where it was my delight to present their Vice President with his well-deserved MJF award.

There were some sad moments in April. Lion Gail and I attended the celebration of life of Annette Evans, who had just recently stepped down as President of Torpoint and Rame Lions, and she left us too soon. A lovely service with music that both she and her husband Graham enjoyed. We also learned of the passing to higher service of Past District Governor Mark Lockie whose life was cut short due to illness. There will be a celebration of his life on 30th April, which Lion Gail and I will attend.

I also had to say goodbye to my daughter Amy. She had a wonderful send-off, but when each of my four grandchildren laid a pink rose on their aunt’s coffin, as brave as I tried to be, I couldn’t hold back the tears.

On a brighter note, with the remainder of April, I look forward to Plymouth Lions 60th Charter celebrations, which I will report upon in the next issue.

The Lions Club of St Austell celebrated the 55th anniversary of the granting of its Charter.

On Saturday 23rd March, the Lions Club of StAustell celebrated the 55th anniversary of the granting of its Charter. Though the previous 54 celebrations took the form of an evening dinner, this anniversary was marked by a luncheon in Trenython Manor. The StAustell Lions and partners were joined by representatives of the Soroptimists, other Cornwall Lions clubs and friends.

After an enjoyable meal, the Loyal Toast was undertaken, followed by Lion President David Honey MBE who proposed a toast to Lions Clubs International. He initially reflected on how the passing of time affected the membership, and then went on to thank Lions John Howe and Roger Dovey for their organisation of two of the Club’s flagship fundraisers - the Christmas Sleigh and the Easter Egg Raffle respectively. He concluded by saying that one of the mainstays of the Lions organisation locally, nationally and internationally was friendship – Lions Clubs International having some 1.4 million members worldwide.

He proposed a toast to the LCI. He then took pleasure in awarding Melvin Jones Fellowships to District Governor Lion James Mathers and, in his absence, to Lion Roger Dovey. The MJF award is given to Lions in recognition of their services to the organisation.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of PDG Lion Mark Lockie; he died peacefully at Dorset County Hospital following a short fight against pancreatic cancer. Gala Week 25th May—2nd June

Budleigh Salterton Lions Club will be holding its annual 'Gala Week'' event commencing on Saturday 25th May, and ending on Sunday 2nd June.

Gala Week is a great opportunity for the local community and visitors to Budleigh Salterton to have lots of fun and raise lots of money for local charities and good causes. The Budleigh Salterton Lions Club held a Gala Weekend in 1982 and over time, as more charities and local organisations wanted to be involved, it developed and became the 'Gala Week' that we know now (although it actually lasts nine days so that the Lions can accommodate everybody who wants to take part.

The Gala Week Programme will be on sale soon for just £1 in lots of local shops in the town and at the village shops in East Budleigh and Otterton. The programme contains all the times and details of the various events and has the entry form for the famous and legendary 'Spot the Stranger' competition. On Saturday 25th May, the week begins with the Gala Week Fete on the Green, the 'big bumper breakfast' in aid of Cancer Research UK, afternoon cream teas in aid of Force Cancer, finishing with the 50th anniversary concert featuring the Budleigh Salterton Male Voice Choir and the Exeter University Singers.

On Sunday 2nd June, in addition to the usual Family Treasure Hunt, the Lions (in conjunction with EMATS - Event Medical, Ambulance & Training Services) will be offering free diabetes checks in the Public Hall from 10 am until 4 pm.

(See page 7)

There are lots of other events and competitions throughout the week including the children's pavement artist competition, pebble-building competition, coffee mornings, a horse-racing evening, the Budleigh Runners 'Pebble Dash' fun run, dog show, barn dance, big band evening, art exhibition, pudding night, bingo evening, children's cycle competition and many more, finishing with the Lions quiz night on Sunday 2nd June at the Feathers Hotel.

As Diabetes Education is one of the main aims of the Lions organisation globally and, as it says on the website, ‘Educate Your Club’, I think it is important that all clubs, when organising charter events, and districts, when organising conventions, should ensure that they have at least one diabetes-appropriate dessert on their menu.

So many charter menus include three or four desserts full of sugar, eg sticky toffee pudding, chocolate brownies, chocolate torte, etc. There is usually nothing suitable for someone who is diabetic.

I pointed this out previously and was told, ‘we cannot regulate for everything such as vegetarianism, veganism, etc’. No, but we are not educators for veganism or vegetarianism, and they are not an illness, only a life choice. However, we ARE supposed to be educators for diabetes. How can we tell the public that they should be avoiding sugar in their food when we actively provide sugar-laden desserts at our functions?

Please, please when arranging charter meals, provide a sugar-free alternative to sticky toffee pudding!

Very Important message about Insurance

We should all be aware that new insurance arrangements are in place but it appears that some clubs may not have been abiding by the restrictions that are imposed. If a club holds an event which does not comply with the limitations placed by the insurers then should there be an incident for which they are legally responsible they would not be covered and the members would be personally liable to meet all the damages and costs.

There is no point in claiming that you didn’t know.

What should you do?

Go to the 105MD website and select “Insurance”.

Download the “Insurance Update” and read it.

Comply with the directions contained in that update which will include preparing a Risk Assessments as a minimum.

On the website check the activities list to determine whether your proposed event falls within the Green, Amber or Red categories to see what further steps you may be required to make.

If in doubt phone Lions MD Headquarters.

Please take these steps to avoid unhappy consequences.

If you want a link to “Insurance Update as of November 2023 then click on the link below. You will probably have to press the control button and click on the link. You should then download the document.

The MD Diabetes Officers met on 18th March via Zoom, largely to discuss the DiabetesUK/ Lions diabetes presentation in June. The date for this has been narrowed down to 5th or 12th June and will give members a chance to learn about diabetes and to ask questions via Zoom.

We also took the opportunity to evaluate recent Conventions:

I enjoyed our Convention in Croyde and meeting fellow Lions. It was my first Convention and first presentation. It seemed to go all right, so thanks to the organisers and tech team for their help and support.

For the benefit of those who could not attend: a good prop for promoting diabetes awareness is the diabetes pull up-banner, available from Lions HQ for £80 including postage. DiabetesUK and the Independent Diabetes Trust publish a wide range of literature about every aspect of diabetes. These can be ordered free of charge and postage is also free. It then just needs somewhere (with the owners’ approval) like a cafe, library, surgery, etc for the public to pick up leaflets, hopefully read and maybe get glucose levels checked or make lifestyle changes.

I do try and visit Lions diabetes events if I know about them. It was good to visit an excellent Well-Being event organised by Portishead Lions. This centred around PSA screening, which could include other tests such as diabetes. The results were emailed back 48 hrs later.

It was then a quick dash down to Crediton to attend an enjoyable Charter Night. I was impressed to see that the menu included a dessert suitable for diabetics, so it can be done.

Easter Egg Draw raises £1,100 for Local Good Causes

Ten individuals have had the enjoyment of winning a giant easter egg each by taking part in this year’s annual Egg Draw organised by NewquayTowan Blystra Lions Club.

Draw sheets were placed in local establishments a few weeks ago, and most ended up being totally filled with names of customers and others who fancied a punt at being the lucky person who scooped the prize for £1 an entry. The establishments themselves then nominated a charity or good cause for half of the profits to go to, with the other half being used by the Lions to support local causes through their Community Fund. Taking part and helping raise over £1,100 in total this year were: Heron Tennis Centre, The Tavern, The Griffin Inn, The Farmer’ Arms St Columb Minor,The Pheasant Inn St Newlyn East, The Falcon at St Mawgan, The Two Clones and Quintrell Inn at Quintrell Downs, The GodolphinArms and TheTraveller’s Rest/ NewquayAFC.

Lion Danny Baize, who organised this year’s draw said: “It was great to see how many people took part and a big thank you goes to the premises that helped raise the money for important causes this year”.

In addition to the funds which will be distributed through the Lions Community Fund, the other groups nominated to receive donations were: the RNLI, CornwallAirAmbulance, Newquay Food Bank, St Newlyn East Christmas Lights, Chrissie’s SunshineAppeal, Children’s Hospice South West and Lander4Uganda.

Sportman’s Dinner raises £23,000 for The Bath Cancer Support Unit

Following their recent successful sportsman’s dinner held at Elmhay Park, Orchardleigh with guest speaker the 3-times Olympic Games medallist and world-record-holding Javelin thrower Steve Backley OBE, Frome Lions were pleased to present a cheque for £11,500 to Mike Taylor, Chairman of the Bath Cancer Unit Support Group. Also present was Mr Kevin Butcher, CEO of the Richard Oatley Foundation, who had generously agreed to match-fund the proceeds raised by the Lions, who also presented a cheque for £11,500, which means the magnificent sum of £23,000 was donated to the charity.

Mr Taylor said that the money raised from the evening, along with the matched funding from the Richard Oatley Foundation, would go towards the purchase of one of three Omniboards, which cost £38,000 each. These boards ensure that the patient is securely immobilised during radiotherapy.
