MARCH 2024 NEWSLETTER

District Governor - Lion James Mathers

February has been a bittersweet month. Whilst it has been a delight to present a series of long-service chevrons and to attend for the first time the Young Ambassador final, (which this year celebrated its 50th anniversary) sadly on the morning of 9th February I received a telephone call from my son-in-law telling me that my daughter Amy had died in her sleep.

Aged only 37, she was taken far too early and, whilst the cause of death is currently unknown, it is likely to have been connected to her diabetes and a bout of acidosis contracted 18 months earlier from which she eventually recovered and returned to work.

I am sorry that my report starts with such a sombre account, but I would like to thank all those Lions who have passed on their condolences and offers of support.

That dreadful news arrived at the start of what was to be a very busy weekend with Seaton & District Lions Club 40th Charter that very day, the quarterly District Cabinet meeting the following morning, and Torpoint and Rame Peninsula 47 Saturday evening. I determined that it was best for me, and all concerned to continue my commitments as District Governor, which I did.

Both Charters were very enjoyable. It was a pleasure to share such an important milestone with Lion President PDG Jim P-H, his wife Lion Rosemary (who had gone out of her way to secure a nice bottle of red wine, which regrettably we didn’t sample because the unexpected news encouraged me to drive home) and the other members of Seaton and their guests.

The Torpoint & Rame Peninsula Charter was another excellent event, which included heartfelt words of thanks from two guests for donations to their causes, one of which was particularly emotional because it came from a mother whose

1

daughter had suddenly died of meningitis and brought an end to a promising career as a research scientist. Naturally, I could completely understand how difficult it was to make her speech. At that Charter event I was also able to present a series of long-service chevrons, as can be seen in the photograph.

On Monday 12th February Lion Gail and I visited Bodmin Lions Club, a seriously active club. Again, I was able to present several long-service chevrons, which amounted to a combined total of 130 years of service, and most of the recipients are shown in the photograph. The following day we visited Babbacombe and St Marychurch Lions, together with their Zone Chair Peter Bryan, and yet more long-service chevrons were presented, as shown in the picture. However, on the way to that meeting, I called upon the President of Paignton Lions and presented their President Malcolm Stone with his 50-year chevron and the certificate signed by our patron.

As I mentioned earlier Lion Gail and I attended the Young Ambassador finals in Dudley, West Midlands, from16th –18th February. For those of you have been previously, you will know just how inspirational this event is. It demonstrates the quality, commitment and determination held by our youth today, and sets for us all an example of what the true nature of service is. I was proud

to lead our District Champion, Toby, into the final session on Sunday who is also pictured receiving his District award, even though he was unsuccessful in securing the top award.

Finally, I am finishing off this post beyond our shores in Tenerife. A touch of winter sun away from all the pressures that come with being District Governor may help me deal with my loss, but I have not missed the opportunity to make the acquaintance of some Lions from this island, who I discovered have a Lions’ Charity shop.

Lion Gail and I met Lion President Jean of the Lions Club of San Miguel De Abona and her husband Lion Martin, who serves as their secretary. Whilst a small club, they are industrious, and their principal funding comes from running a charity shop. Included is a photograph of them together with two fellow Lion helpers.

They engage with Sight First, provide funding for local food banks and organise a holiday of a lifetime for underprivileged children from various parts of the UK, which has been operating on an annual basis since the 1990s. In addition, they support a day

whilst their clients were on an outing. It was very well run, thanks to Monica, with whom I’m pictured. Finally, I was able to exchange banners with Jean and Martin when I retrieved mine from our hotel room at the end of our time together.

A few more days in the sun before it’s back to work.

This was from some of the proceeds from the Santa Sleigh collections through-out December. April Whitehead, Fundraising Lead - Major Gifts & Partnerships at Weldmar Hospice said, "We would like to thank Weymouth & Portland Lions Club for this really generous donation. Thanks to Club President Ryan and Kevin the Lion for coming to visit us last Friday to make the presentation. They certainly brightened up a very dull Friday afternoon for us".

Very Important message about Insurance

We should all be aware that new insurance arrangements are in place but it appears that some clubs may not have been abiding by the restrictions that are imposed. If a club holds an event which does not comply with the limitations placed by the insurers then should there be an incident for which they are legally responsible they would not be covered and the members would be personally liable to meet all the damages and costs.

There is no point in claiming that you didn’t know.

What should you do?

Go to the 105MD website and select “Insurance”.

Download the “Insurance Update” and read it.

Comply with the directions contained in that update which will include preparing a Risk Assessments as a minimum.

On the website check the activities list to determine whether your proposed event falls within the Green, Amber or Red categories to see what further steps you may be required to make. If in doubt phone Lions MD Headquarters.

Please take these steps to avoid unhappy consequences.

If you want a link to “Insurance Update as of November 2023 then click on the link below. You will probably have to press the control button and click on the link. You should then download the document.

Since the government suggested Warm Space initiatives where organisations provide a warm environment and hot drinks and food for people struggling with the cost of heating their homes, Babbacombe and St Marychurch Lions have been working with St Matthias Church in Torquay to provide this.

The service has had a steady flow of users for the offering- tea/coffee/chocolate with cakes and home-made soup or cheese ploughman’s in the summer and is much appreciated by those coming in. Often the focus for them is the alleviation of loneliness as much as the economical element, so it is a real and beneficial Lions service which we are happy to continue.

On Saturday 27th January members of the Lions Motocross committee were invited to attend the Purbeck Motocross annual presentation night. This year, as with previous years, the event was held at the Trumpet Major in Dorchester. Although the evening is all about celebrating the year of motocross and the successful Weymouth Beach Motocross event held in October each year, the evening was tinged with sadness because Alf Stearn announced his retirement from Purbeck Motocross Club after some thirty-odd years at the helm, (we think). Even Alf wasn’t sure how long he had been running the Club for as well. However

the night went well and this gave Lion President Ryan Hope the opportunity to first of all thank Alf for his sterling work over the years, but also to present Rex Hawkins, (another stalwart of the club), with his much-deserved MJF. Rex has been at Alf’s side together with Jim Shipton for much of those thirty-odd years in charge. What a team.

As is the tradition, each year Purbeck Motocross Club also make a sizable donation to the work of Lions and this year was no exception, with Alf handing over a cheque to Ryan for £1,800.00

The Lions were there to say thank you for the kind donation from the Dancing Club, money raised at their Christmas Dance.

The Lions also collected used postage stamps, hearing aid batteries and used tablet blister packs that members of the Dancing Club had been very kindly collecting for the Lions. After some delicious tea and cake the members invited the Lions to join them on the dance floor!

Racing cancelled, BV½ completed and tree number three finally finds a home

What a day and what a month for Blackmore Vale Lions Club. A bit of disappointment (racing cancelled!) but a major success (race run) and a footnote (Tree Number Three).

The intention was to provide a report on our final KLIPS programme collection for Christmas/New Year, a big bucket collection at Wincanton Races. Jack Frost had other ideas (not a lion, he!) as racing was cancelled due to the hard and slippery ground. We have been promised another event in the 2024 season.

The half marathon more than made up for it though. The successful organization of the 31st running of the Blackmore Vale Half Marathon was a major effort for a small club. Traditionally referred to as the BV½ - Blackmore Vale, it is a major fundraiser for the Club. The BV½ was a major success for local charities.

We were determined to improve on last year, when numbers were depressed from the normal as the Covid hangover continued. The numbers were boosted by being selected as a league event in the County Road Running League and by preselecting the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance as a recipient of some of the proceeds. The former increased our uptake by clubs and serious runners; the latter allowed us to piggyback on their superb electronic and press advertising and information flows (an object lesson for charities).

We also reinstituted the “Fun Run” and increased the local publicity with press articles and a workplace poster campaign. The result was an increase in numbers from 151, plus retirees and disqualifications, to 329 runners plus retirees and disqualifications, and 22 fun

quick but not quite the record, and we raised a lot more money, an increase from roughly £5,000 to roughly £8,000 (we are still counting and have some donations to make). All in all, it means we have roughly doubled our charitable earnings after deductions are made and bills are paid.

Apart from writing this report, I double as the race director and the race organizing committee. The club and I would just like to publicly thank the runners, the sponsors, the volunteers and the officials who journeyed from far and wide to help deal with this huge increase in competitors. This was a number not seen since the club imposed a limit on entrants to balance the infrastructure with the numbers. Those who were out at the start and finish and on the course had to keep warm, (no easy task), and they were universally praised by the competitors for being friendly, polite and effective. Those dealing with registration and catering had to deal with scenes worthy of Piccadilly in the Christmas rush. I thought the race HQ was going to burst, but there were no bad tempers, no panic, just people out to enjoy themselves and our team calmly working to help them.

Some lessons, including publicity using bigger circulations than just your own Facebook page or web site is important so “Thank you” to SW Post’s and the Air Ambulance’s outreach and our local print journals for reinforcing the message. Thanks also to other Lions clubs for helping out with extra helpers, marshals and general assistance. We need more next year.

Annual Charity Sporting Dinner is another great successful fundraising event

The latest Frome Lions annual charity sporting dinner was held at Elmhay Park, Orchardleigh on 1st of February. The guest speaker was three times Olympic Games medallist and world-record -holding Javelin Thrower, Steve Backley OBE. This year’s chosen charity was the Bath Cancer Unit Support Group. The chair of the group, Mr Mike Taylor, was in attendance and informed the guests at the start of proceedings about the group, which was formed in 1985 to purchase equipment to keep cancer treatments in the Royal United Hospital Bath, as there were plans at that time to move all treatments to Bristol.

Since then, they have raised almost £6 million to fund various purchases of equipment, including a PET CT scanner for £1.2 million in 2016. He said that they were planning that the funds raised from the evening, along with matched funding from the Richard Oatley Foundation, would be used to purchase one of three OmniBoards, which cost £38,000 each. These ensure that the patient is securely immobilised during radiotherapy.

Also in attendance was Mr Kevin Butcher, CEO

of the Richard Oatley foundation, who had generously agreed to match fund the proceeds raised by the Lions.

Following an auction of donated items conducted by Mr Martyn Hemmett, the 180 guests sat down to a splendid meal and afterwards to hear an engaging talk from the guest speaker, in which he outlined his time as an Olympic athlete winning a bronze medal at the 1992 Barcelona Games and silver medals at the 1996 Atlanta and 2000 Sydney games. He also broke the world record on two occasions, in 1991 and 1992.

At the time of going to press, the final proceeds from the event are still being finalised, but it is expected that the Lions will be able to donate at least £10,000 to the chosen charity, which will be matched by the Richard Oatley Foundation raising it to £20,000.

We will be out in Fowey collecting for Marie Curie on Saturday 9th March and Sunday 10th March between 10 am and 4 pm, when we will be in South Street, Fowey. This a worthwhile charity which helps provide better end-of-life care for people, whatever their illness. We have been lucky enough to secure matched funding for these collections, through one of our members, so anything donated to the collectors in Fowey on 9th and 10th March will attract matched funding.

Our Ukraine Appeal continues and in early February a very full car of goods was delivered to Callington for onward transport to Poland and then on to Ukraine. Club news from around the South West

As reported in the February edition of the South West Post, the weeks leading up to Christmas were very busy and profitable for the Club, with around £18,500 being raised for distribution to local charities and good causes. At the February Club meeting, £10,000 raised through the Trees of Light was distributed equally to four local charities, namely Plymouth & Cornwall Cancer Fund, St Luke's Hospice, Tavistock Area Support Services (TASS) and the Tavistock Group of Parkinson's UK. Representatives of each of the charities said how hard it was to raise money in the current financial climate and that they were deeply indebted to the Lions Club for nominating them as recipients from the Trees of Light and to all those who had sponsored lights in memory of departed loved ones and other good causes. The photo shows the four recipients with their cheques and Lions Brenda Moyse, John Noblet and President Graeme Ugle.

At the same Club meeting, President Graeme had the great task of badging up two new members, namely Graham Hill (not the racing driver) who was sponsored by his step-mum Lion Angela Hill, and Sally Scorcher sponsored by Lion Richard Jones, which brings Tavistock's Club up to an impressive 39 members. The photo shows Graeme and Membership Chair Lion Lyn Roberts with the two new members.

It is two years since the Russian invasion of Ukraine and Tavistock Lions are planning another trip to Warsaw later this month (March) with two van loads of much needed aid, including baby food and nappies, toiletries, clothing and various walking aids. Each trip costs around £1,000 per van, so the Club has been busy fundraising to cover the costs as well as collecting goods. Two bucket collections, with members of the Ukrainian community who are living in the town, were recently held in Bedford Square in the centre of Tavistock and, despite the usual Tavistock weather(!), around £1,100 was collected. Two sessions at the local Tesco store raised another £400, plus an amazing 15 trolley loads of much needed items including baby's nappies and toiletries. Club members Phil Volz and Jill Patt organised a quiz night, which was won by the Ukrainian team and which raised another £450 towards the travel costs, so nearly £2,000 was raised in just over a week, virtually covering the costs of the next trip. Club members said that the generosity of the local community never ceases to amaze, with donations of much needed items and money which makes being a Lion so very satisfying and humbling at times.

Attached photos show the collections in Tesco and Bedford Square with Lions and members of the Ukrainian community.

Our entertainment for Party Night is singer John Prescott who DG James and I have seen on a couple of occasions; we are sure you will enjoy his repertoire following dinner. Fancy dress is optional the theme being Environmental, a broad subject I know, so I’m looking forward to seeing what your interpretation is and what environment means to you.
