District Governor - Lion James Mathers Fellow Lions, you may recall that when I last reported I included an attendance at Fowey River Lions Club where their President, Tony Bartlett, hosted Andy, and Emma Burnard to talk about their convoys to help Ukrainian citizens. I sadly report that on Sunday 12th November Lion Tony collapsed and died. He joined LCI in 1977 and was a Charter member. He served as their President for at least six terms and had been Treasurer as long as anyone can remember. At age 75 he was still working as a self-employed electrician and will be sadly missed by all, especially his wife Lynn. Unfortunately, a developing cataract in my left eye made driving in the dark difficult and consequently put a hold on club visits, but I am pleased to say that I have now had the procedure and my sight is much improved. Although I still require the right eye to be corrected, I intend to recommence my visits at the start of the New Year and renew my friendship with the A30 and M5! Since my last report I have attended MD Council, presided over my second Cabinet meeting, and attended Charter anniversaries at Yeo Valley, Paignton, and Callington Lions Clubs. Once again, the new procedure at Cabinet for conducting business provided considerable benefit because it allowed us to discuss the most difficult issue facing Lions clubs, namely reducing membership.

105SW Environmental Project Competition

Yeo Valley Lions made Lion Gail and me most welcome and they were outstanding hosts. I was delighted to have been asked to present Lion John Oldham with his MJF and, the following day, Lion President Graham and his wife Liz

took us to visit their Kingsmoor

Playground for special needs children, as you can see from the pictures. This is a special place providing a ‘safe haven’ for families and organisations caring for young people who do not feel comfortable in, or are unable to use, a normal public playground. After two to three years of fundraising and construction, the Playground was opened in 1999, since when more than 750 families, special schools and other appropriate organisations have registered for membership. Access is via a coded gate, which provides a secure environment where Playground members are free to come and go as they please at any time between April and the end of October, with facilities designed so that the whole family can visit together. Daily visits are made by members of Yeo Valley Lions Club for maintenance and safety inspection purposes. Immediately following Cabinet, it was a trip across Dartmoor to Paignton, a much more pleasant drive than the route recommended by Google and my Satnav. It was a delightful Charter Dinner, and their President Lion Malcoln Stone is a remarkable man who once again stepped up to the plate despite his age. The following morning it was off to Tavistock where Callington Lions were holding their 47th Charter anniversary, a much less formal lunch and very nice too.

I suspect that with December on our heels many clubs will be busy accompanying Santa or engaging in tin-shakes. I am certainly on my club rota to don the red coat and white beard, so I wish you all the very best for Christmas and keep safe.

Latest club news updates from Newquay Towan Blystra Lions Members of Newquay Towan Blystra Lions Club are joined by Newquay Lions President Dave Evison, BID Manager Mark Warren and a giant pirate at the start of this year’s Zombie Crawl.

The Pride(s) of Newquay Members of Newquay Lions and Towan Blystra Lions came together on Saturday 21 October to celebrate the fifteenth anniversary of the founding of the Towan Blystra Club. Together with Past District Governor Lesley Chudley, the group proudly posed for a unique photo before enjoying an evening of great food and entertainment at the town’s Magnuson Sandy Lodge Hotel. Towan Blystra President, Lion Heather Stanley, said, “In total we had over 100 guests attending and almost 40 of them were Lions from the two clubs in our town, which I think is an amazing indication of the extent to which people here are prepared to give their time to help others. “It was a brilliant evening, and we were also

delighted that there were a further eight Lions clubs from around Cornwall and further afield joining us, together with our good friends from Newquay Rotary, who are yet another group who voluntarily support many important causes.”

Top awards for two Lions serving the community in different ways A Melvin Jones Fellowship is a highly prized and prestigious award from the Lions Clubs International Foundation, which is awarded to members of the community whose work towards humanitarian causes is deemed worthy of special recognition. At the Newquay Towan Blystra Lions Charter Night on Saturday 21 October, two members of that club were surprised when called forward to be presented with individual fellowships for their outstanding voluntary service to the community by Past District Governor, Lion Lesley Chudley. Lion Monique Collins does so much more than help others through the Lions as, being the manager of Newquay Drop in and share Centre (DISC) for the past five years, she has not only helped the homeless, but other members of the community, many of them in full-time employment, who are finding it hard to make ends meet. She has championed many causes, such as drop -in benefit and legal advice sessions, giving mental health professionals a base to work from. She has arranged for a mobile dentist to give treatment, liver screening tests and even selfdefence classes. She has also enabled street vets to visit and look after pets. Monique has appeared on television on many occasions, speaking up for local people who find it difficult to get permanent accommodation in this seaside town. TV documentary-maker and presenter, Simon Reeve, has visited DISC twice for different programmes he has produced. Most recently, DISC has been nominated for the King’s Award for

Voluntary Service and the winners will be announced on 14 November. Lion Jill Bunt, a former Mayor of Newquay and previous president and treasurer of Towan Blystra Lions, is their current secretary and gives up many hundreds of hours every year in support of good causes through the Lions. In addition, she volunteers at the RNLI shop at Newquay Harbour and in the Cornwall Air Ambulance shop in the town’s East Street. She has also been a keen and regular supporter of Monique’s work at DISC, helping to pack meals and organise deliveries to vulnerable people, notably during Covid. Speaking of the two new Melvin Jones Fellows, Lion President Heather Stanley said: “We are so proud to have Monique and Jill as members of our club. Their contribution, not just to Lions, but directly to supporting others in the community makes these awards so appropriate and fits the criteria of the Melvin Jones Fellowship perfectly.” The Melvin Jones Fellowship is named in honour of the founder of Lions Clubs International. The organisation was founded in 1917 and is now represented by clubs like Newquay Towan Blystra in over 200 countries and boasts some 1.4 million members. Cornwall has 16 clubs and two of them are in Newquay.

Club welcomes new member Carole Boyle Newquay Towan Blystra Lions were delighted to welcome a new member to their club, bringing the club’s total membership to 32. Carol Boyle is shown receiving her certificate and Lions pin badge from President Heather Stanley and her sponsor, club Vice President Jon Collins at their recent meeting in The Griffin Inn. Heather said: “Carol has already helped us out in several events, including Newquay Beer Festival and has joined us at our recent business meetings as well. I am sure she can contribute a lot to the service we provide in the community, and we are all delighted that she is now part of ’the pride’.” Lion Frieda Pollock

Diabetes stand in Queen Square On Thursday 16th November, Clevedon Lions took Diabetes Awareness to Queen Square in Clevedon. Past Presidents Sue Miller, Ann Meredith and Paul Pollock took leaflets and information sheets to the residents of Clevedon at the weekly market. Lots of interesting people came to find out about diabetes and how to recognise the signs and symptoms and how to deal with the life changes.

Weymouth South Scouts say thank you for South Korean Jamboree funding Apologies for the late thank you letter but thank you for the donation the Lions gave to Weymouth South Scouts to help me and the three other explorers raise the money we needed to attend the 25th World Scout Jamboree. It was a massive help. As I'm sure you would've heard, the Jamboree didn't go to plan, but I still had an amazing time in South Korea. I experienced many new things, such as trying new foods that I would have never had if l didn't go

to Korea; how clean and big the underground was, as well as having the aircon on it, which was lovely; and getting to go to a dog and cat cafe!!!! Most importantly for me, I got to meet lots of new people from around the world who I have stayed in contact with, as well as learning about the incredible culture of Korea.

Torbay Young Carers enjoy 4-Day Cookery Course Babbacombe & St Marychurch organised a four-day cookery course for Torbay Young Carers during the summer holidays. It was run at South Devon College in its professional training kitchens by one of its chefs in conjunction with our service committee. The youngsters, who are all carers for relatives with some form of disability, were instructed in menu planning, costing, buying effectively and then cooking a variety of dishes which they took home to their families. On the fourth day we organised a visit to Brixham wholesale fish market, which is normally closed to the public, for a guided tour by the manager who explained many of the

different fish landed at Brixham (one of the largest fishing ports in the UK) and where they were destined for and how to judge quality. This was followed by a fish & chip lunch, courtesy of Rockfish restaurant on Brixham quayside. Overall, a really useful and much appreciated few days for these youngsters to help them in their challenging roles.

20 Shoe boxes filled with Christmas gifts to disadvantaged families in Moldova Babbacombe & St Marychurch Lions Club despatched 20 shoe boxes with Christmas gifts to disadvantaged families in Moldova, which is a neighbour of Ukraine and currently home to many of their refugees. The boxes are collected and transported by a local charity, Christian Response to Eastern Europe (cr2ee) based in Dawlish in Devon. Photograph shows service chairman Frank Wallis handing over the boxes for transportation. This is a project we have been supporting for a few years now, interrupted only by Covid.

100 Teddy Bears donated to The Salvation Army for disadvantaged children in Torbay Babbacombe & St. Marychurch Lions Club discovered that the local branch of the Salvation Army in Torquay puts together Christmas parcels for disadvantaged children across Torbay. We sourced 100 teddy bears to donate, buying them wholesale to save costs. They should result in some smiles from deserving children on Christmas Day who might otherwise have felt excluded from the festivities. Picture shows the teddy bears in the company of Lion President Norman Squires, Geoff Payne of the service committee and Captain Chris Baker of the Salvation Army who gratefully accepted the donation.

Cheque presentations to Medical Detection Dogs and Baby Basics South Somerset At the Business Meeting on Monday 6th November Ilminster Lions Club President Shirley Farley and the other Club members presented cheques to two different charities. Zone I Chair Lion Richard Allen, who was visiting the Club, was kindly invited to join in with the presentation. The first cheque was presented to Peter Isaacson, volunteer speaker for Medical Detection Dogs. 'Medical Detection Dogs' train dogs to detect the odour of human disease with the aim of developing faster, more efficient and less invasive diagnostics that lead to better patient outcomes. They are involved with the research into the fight against cancer and other lifethreatening diseases, including Parkinson’s disease and bacterial infections. The Bio Detection Dogs are trained to find the odour of those diseases in samples such as urine, breath and sweat, and their work has the potential to benefit millions.

The second cheque was presented to Lisa Osborne from 'Baby Basics South Somerset'. Baby Basics is a volunteerled project aiming to support new mothers and families who are struggling to meet the financial and practical burden of looking after a new baby. Baby Basics started in Sheffield in the spring of 2009. There is an ever-increasing network of Baby Basics centres across the country, each staffed by a committed team of volunteers. Baby Basics provides much needed essentials and equipment to mothers and families who are unable to provide these items for themselves, including but not limited to teenage mums, people seeking asylum and women fleeing domestic abuse and trafficking.

The children in the school are keen to promote the importance of keeping our environment rubbishfree. So, the children wanted to design posters to encourage people to do just that. Budleigh Salterton Lions Club offered to sponsor the environmental poster competition and provide art materials for the school as prizes. The Lions met the School Ethos Group which decided that the prizes should be awarded to the whole class rather than to individual children. Lions Gill Wilson and Richard Allen were invited to the school to judge the Poster Competition and the winners were announced during the celebration worship on Friday 20th October.

On Tuesday 14th November Budleigh Salterton Lions Club welcomed its latest member Lion Sue Glover. Sue has already carried out several service activities with the Lions in the local community, including litter- picking and helping at the Budleigh Community Supper evenings at Wesley's.

Sue said "I was delighted to be invited to join the Lions and to be able to meet such a friendly bunch of like-minded people who serve the local community. “There are such diverse activities to choose from. So far, I have helped at the community food larder and community suppers, litter-picked, and walked the Exmouth Park run to raise awareness of diabetes. In the process there have been many cups of tea and friendly chats with fellow Lions!" On Wednesday 15th November Budleigh Lions Richard and Tom were invited to the 'Sequence Dancing Club' in Exmouth. The members of the Dancing Club have been very kindly collecting used postage stamps, hearing aid batteries and used tablet blister packs for the Lions. Richard and Tom gave a brief talk about who Lions are, what we do and how the various items

are recycled. After some delicious tea and cake, the members invited Lions Richard and Tom to join them on the dance floor! Fortunately, everyone survived without any injuries. Steven England who runs the 'Sequence Dancing Club' later contacted Richard and said, "It was great to see you and Tom this afternoon and to hear about your work. After you’d gone, we decided we would hold our Christmas charity dance in aid of Budleigh Lions Club."

1st Midsomer Norton Scouts raise the roof The 1st Midsomer Norton Scout group are literally raising the roof of their hall on Radstock Road. The hall was built many years ago and whilst the roof is structurally sound, it is not watertight. After careful investigation, the group have determined that the cost-effective solution is to put a new roof over the top of the existing one. This will bring the building up to present building standards of insulation. Last August, the local Journal newspaper reported on the efforts of two brothers, Jacob and Issac, from the 1st Midsomer Norton Cub and Beavers group. They were raising sponsorship funds towards the new roof by wombling (litter-picking) around Midsomer Norton. Their actions, reported in the paper, inspired the Radstock and Midsomer Norton Lions Club to donate towards the cause. Lion President Rob Jamieson and Lion Lyn Haile were delighted to meet the enterprising brothers and present them with a giant cheque for £250. We wish the Scout groups every success in raising the roof and enjoying a watertight space to meet when the work is completed.
