LINTON NEWS
December 2024
So much work to try and include in our final article for 2024, here are just a few recent projects our members have been working on.
Monika’s first Great Grandchild is going to be so well dressed in this gorgeous, knitted dress and a selection of tiny newborn socks. Obviously the baby modelling another pair of Monika’s socks is not a newborn

Lyn has been busy making crocheted tea cosies using scrap wool donated to the Craft Group. These are available for sale through the Linton Emporium. Funds raised will go back to the Craft Group to assist with ongoing expenses to maintain our presence at the Hub.

Janet has finished another fine woollen shawl with beautiful lace-like details.

Who knew that chook aprons were a thing? Or more accurately, chook saddles to protect the females from bullying or over enthusiastic roosters? This apron was made by Anne T

The Linton & District Craft Group meets every Thursday at the Linton Community Hub, from 10 am until 3 pm. The Group will take a break after a Christmas get-together on Thursday 19 December, returning on Thursday 9th of January 2025
Here’s wishing everyone a safe and happy Christmas and New Year. We look forward to welcoming new members and old in 2025

Linton and District Historical Society Report for Linton News: December 2024
November History Afternoon cancelled
Unfortunately,ProfessorFredCahirfromFederation University, our speaker for this event, Bush Tucker Plants a 200-year history of their uses and application for your garden, came down with Covid just days before the scheduled date of 24 November, so we had to cancel it.
He was very apologetic but there was nothing that could be done. Apologies to everyone who wanted to come or zoom into his talk. We might be able to reschedule it in 2025.
Successful grant application
We were recently informed that we have received a Community Strengthening Grant from the Golden Plains shire for $3,960 to develop a Self-guided Historical Audio Tour of Linton and Surrounds.
This will involve the user downloading an app on a smart phone and listening to historical information about points of interest and seeing relevant photos where possible. We hope this will encourage visitors to the town and encourage locals to try it out. We plantohavethisfinishedinthefirsthalfofnextyear.
World Heritage Bid
WeareworkingwiththeShiretogetLintonincluded in the Victorian Goldfields World Heritage Bid. There will be a presentation to the community in Linton in February 2025 for everyone to learn more about the bid. We don’t have a date yet, but watch this space.
Open days
Our final open day for 2024 will be on 8 December 2-5pm.

Congratulations to the football and netball coaches who have also been appointed as follows:
Football - Clayton Scoble (Seniors), Zane Ross (Reserves), Matthew Spratling, Sam Hopper, Dean O’Brien (Under-18), Adam Webb (Under-15), Shannon Sculley (Under-12).

Mack is an experienced goal shooter who has played netball since she was 9 and has played BNA representative and A Grade netball in the BFNL. She is a competitive netballer with leadership qualities both on and off the court and will provide the A Grade team with much needed firepower and experience. Mack has expressed her excitement about becoming a “Carngham Linton girl” and is “looking forward to learning more” from our Head Coach, Rachael Cross. She “can’t wait to be part of an awesome club”. Look out for more football and netball signings to come!

The club is accepting players to fill the five football and eight netball teams for the 2025 season. In the football, we field senior, reserves, under-18, under-15 and under-12 teams. In the netball, we have A, B, C & D grade senior teams, as well as under-17, under-15 and under-13 junior teams. We are also accepting children aged 5 and over for Auskick and NetSetGo programs.
We are always encouraging more parents, members and supporters to get involved and assist in the many jobs required on game day. If you think you would like to help but are unsure of what is required, club members will be more than happy to train you. To join the playing group or adopt a volunteer role at the club, the following committee members can be contacted for assistance:-

Linton and District Men’s Shed

NOVEMBER
in your Men’s Shed
November in the Linton Men’s Shed has shared some interesting times with interaction between all our members as it should be. I mean a bunch of different individuals, who know and respect each other conducting and conversing with good will between all.
Ongoing individual projects, mainly small, and a larger job for the Golden Plains Shire, keep our tools busy, it’s what we have them for. Ongoing placement of our large wood inventory has given us better access to it all, as well as more space to work on our favourite things.
Our AGM was held on 16th of the month. Our office bearers are:
• President: Chris Prestwich
• Vice President: Gary Thode
• Secretary: Daryl Lees
• Treasurer: Murray Robertson
• Shed Manager: Doug Phillips
We thank and congratulate our members for their service.
Another activity undertaken, was to help our Linton Primary School with an event to congratulate the Linton Community who enabled a statue of the remarkable Dr. Vera Scantlebury to be cast and installed in the Avenue of Honour.
The Shed opening hours are unchanged over the “silly season”, and we will welcome all people who would take the opportunity on any Monday, Wednesday or Saturday between 11am and 4pm to check us out. Dad bring junior, or your own Dad, and see how good a Shed can be.
Until February, when the first Linton News of 2025 arrives at your place, the Men’s Shed wish you all a bonzer Xmas, and a spectacular 2025
LINTON EMERGENCY RELIEF PANTRY
Since our establishment, it has become obvious several residents in the local areas are “doing it tough” We are now helping families regularly to maintain a diet that might not be otherwise possible. The wonderful supplies from Food Bank have at times exceeded demand, and we try hard to minimise waste. As it is months since our opening, so much has happened, especially interaction with all locals and residents, who know we are open. They know they can pop in, grab a few items, chat with us, and leave a donation. Whether 20 cents or $20, it goes from the tin to the bank to help keep us afloat. Our costs are increasing in 2025, and having a monthly sponsor will see you recognised as a major helper to our Pantry. If December and Xmas has added some extra stress on some of us, please avail the Pantry as that is exactly what we want you to do.
The continuation of the Pantry in Linton will set it as an icon for the community to share and contribute with and to. The Committee of your Pantry want to wish you all a ripper Xmas, and a brilliant 2025. Peace on Earth, goodwill to all men.

President's Report for Linton Management Committee
It has been a long and at times an arduous journey over the last 5 years or so. Many people have given their time and effort to secure the former Council chambers for the use of the local community. It looks like we have arrived.
The Hub Management Committee was set up on the request of Council to facilitate the running of the space and to engage with Council on a day-to-day basis. We signed the lease agreement in 2024. Council policy on new leases is that they give a 12-month lease to start, then when that is up we will be signing a longer more secure lease if all parties are in agreement.
Committee Members
• Daryll Lees President
• Janet Pathe Secretary
• Jennifer Cromarty Treasurer
• Daryl Davis Committee member
• Margaret Jenkie Committee member
• Bev Harris Committee member
• Karen Ronan Committee member
• Jill Wheeler Committee member
The committee is made up of members from all the current user groups. The user groups are Linton and District Craft Group Inc., The Emergency Food Relief Pantry, Goldbrush Painters group, Linton and District Progress Association Inc., Cemetery Trust, Linton and District Historical Society Inc., Coffee, Cake and Chat, Intergenerational Daycare Group. User groups pay a daily/monthly fee to use the premises. We encourage any other groups to also come and use the facility.
New carpets have been installed, some of the rooms have been painted and new air conditioners are planned for two more rooms. The committee has also embarked upon getting the kitchen converted into a commercial kitchen. This will open many opportunities to further utilise the building, helping to future proof the Hub for the community. Also, a small business hub is planned and already we have a great new printer for use by the community. Wi-Fi is being looked at and will be connected very soon.
I am very optimistic about the future, and I hope the community will be too. For anyone that would like to ask any questions or just have a chat about anything to do with the running of the Hub please feel free to contact us. Our email is: thehublinton@gmail.com.
