Check out the Carnegie Heritage & Arts Center of Greene County By: Donna Kluesner

T

he Carnegie Heritage & Arts Center of Greene County offers a variety of creative outlets and promotion for our area artists and history buffs. The inception of the non-profit began 5 years ago with a group of concerned community members who wished to see the national and state historic registered building saved and repurposed into an arts and history center. For 100 years the Tudor/Arts & Crafts style building was used as a library. In 1908 the cornerstone was set and the construction made possible by a grant of $15,000.00 by Andrew Carnegie. In 2007 the library moved to a new structure and the building sat vacant for a year until the non-profit the Carnegie Heritage & Arts Center of Greene County was given possession and started renovations in 2008. After 7 months of extensive repairs the historic building was once again ready to serve the community and opened in May of 2009. In the past year the Carnegie has showcased the works of solo artists Wyatt LeGrand, Nick Schneider & Nicole Byrd, Sammye Dina Smith, Robin Myers, Tim Shonk and currently on display is the artist Logan Wade. In addition several group shows have been exhibited such as the 3-5 year old art of the Head Start, the Linton-Stockton High School Art Classes, First Grade Top 12 art, and the combined community shows of the Fall and

Winter Open which include all county residents. Several classes have been held including “Introduction to Fiction Writing” and an “Inspirational Workshop” by Ruby Moon Houldson a local award winning author, painting classes by Rich Hall and Tim Shonk and a week long Youth Art Camp by Mikelle Hensley. The Fotonatics, a local photography group, also meets at the Carnegie twice a month and is open for participation by local photographers. A very successful event held last February was the “Best Little Cupcake in Linton” contest which brought out amazing cupcake creations. The addition of the “Spark” shop organized and managed by Lori Wade has been very successful as well. Lori donates all her time at the Carnegie to help local artists promote their works. Over 25 artists have a sample of what they create and is available for purchase. Handmade jewelry, scarves, inlaid wood sculptures, wooden pens, greeting cards, blown glass items, wood carved signs, custom t-shirt quilts, baskets, pottery, purses, wall hangings and paintings are just a sample of what you will find at the shop. A new addition is the “Gathering Grounds” social area with make your own Keurig coffee and WIFI. The memorabilia of Phil Harris and Alice Faye is also on display as well as artwork of local artists Dale French, Father Hilary Viek and Muriel Baughman in the history wing.

History and Storytelling meet once a month at the Carnegie and is led by Fred Markle. Topics have included the interesting history of the local Correll Family, mining history by Fred Allen, history of the viaduct by Cheryl Helms, and the covered bridge south of Bloomfield information by Ginger Spice. Currently the northwest gallery is showcasing the solo show entitled “I Used to Dream with the Doors Unlocked” of artist Logan Wade and will be on display until July 20. His unique style combines out of the box compositions, bold color and motion to tell a story in each painting. The combined photography works of Cheryl Helms and Pauline Dudley entitled “Today’s Yesterday” will run from July 23 - August 17 and the First Annual Carnegie Exhibition Juried Show is slated for August 24 - September 27. Also scheduled is a youth (ages 8-13) art camp July 15-July 20 10-12pm at the Carnegie by Mikelle Hensley using recycled materials. Lessons in music and voice are offered at the Carnegie by Rae Anne Tyra as well. Check out our website www.carnegiegreene. org for additional information and teaching schedules or call 812 847-0165. The Carnegie Heritage & Arts Center is located at 110 East Vincennes Street, Linton, IN Hours are 11-4pm Wed-Fri and Sat. 12-4pm. estled in the southwest room of the Carnegie Heritage and Arts Center lies a collection of handmade treasures. Gorgeous baskets and pottery line the shelves, and stunning photographs and paintings hang upon the walls. One tiny table holds the most unique note cards; another is home to yummy sugar scrubs, soaps, and bath salts. Beautiful jewelry catches your eye, and the hand-painted porcelain teacup is just begging to sit in your curio cabinet. This little gift shop, known as Spark, opened one snowy day this past February. The 4

shop has grown over the past few months to now include almost 30 different artisans. Every item in our shop is handmade. Most products are by local artists from Greene County. The talent that we have right here in our own community is absolutely astounding. Spark is also home to two different mission teams. Residing in our shop are the LFCC Orphan/Adoption team and Hope’s Closet, a group focused on rescuing people out of human trafficking. They offer many pieces from Ethiopia, Haiti, Uganda, and India. Funds raised from these items go directly back to these organizations. When you purchase that handmade jewelry box, you are helping change a life halfway across the world. What an amazing opportunity! If you haven’t had a chance yet, please stop in and visit our little shop of handmade goodness. The Carnegie is located at 110 East Vincennes Street in Linton, IN. We are open Wednesday through Friday from 10:00-4:00 pm, and Saturday 12:00-4:00 pm.

“Visit Greene County... Come Back Home Again”

is the current slogan driving the activities of the Greene County Tourism Advisory Board (GCTAB). Since 2007, a group of volunteers and representatives from multiple organizations have been working to promote Greene County as a tourist destination. While it is sometimes difficult for any person to imagine that someone would want to visit the place that they live, believe or not, Greene County has been a definitive tourist destination for decades. The efforts of many have helped to sustain the preservation of numerous sites and the organization of multiple events over the years. Thus, the focus of GCTAB has been to take our countywide efforts to the next level; to promote and market what we have to offer from all corners of the county. In other words, we need to send a message to the public that shares the tourism opportunities that we have and then encourages them to visit our communities, attend our festivals, and in turn, contribute to our local economy. In the fall of 2011, GCTAB announced the release of its second and much expanded Tourism Brochure for Greene County featuring an 18x24 fold-out map of the county and all of its important public tourist sites. Since the release, brochures have

been included in most interstate rest areas and welcome centers throughout Indiana, multiple businesses throughout Greene County, and in nineteen (19) information centers designated throughout the county that include all libraries, city/town halls, and some organization offices. If you have not had a chance to see this brochure, you will find that it is a great resource both for visitors and local residents. As many of our volunteers have realized, we too as “Greene Countians” are often visitors in our own backyard, per se, without even realizing it. Upon release of the brochure, GCTAB went to work on the very important task of creating a web presence for Greene County Tourism. Building on the design and content of the brochure, in March of 2013, the first Greene County Tourism website was launched. Located at www.visitgc. com, this powerful, eye-catching website provides the perfect mechanism for letting the world know that Greene County has much to offer. Work continues to find other new ways to promote Greene County Tourism including the Visit Greene County Indiana Facebook Page and the “Made-in-GreeneCounty” Facebook Page, which were both launched in March of 2013 and already have nearly 300 members each. Another one of those ways is the “Made

in Greene County” Showcase, which is planned to be held annually the last Saturday in September. With significant success and much praise by the public stemming from last year’s event, we are anticipating quite a crowd and expect to nearly double the number of vendors. We know that many people often make plans to travel to the Parke County Covered Bridge Festival to find that special gift or new item that would be perfect for the house, but why do Greene Countians need to leave the county to spend their dollars when there is so much talent and creativity, equal to, if not better than what you might find in Mansfield or Bridgeton? So, this year, make an effort to attend the “Showcase” and check out what all of your neighbors and relatives have to offer. I guarantee you will be surprised! If you know someone who might have a few handmade things to sell or a school group or church group that need a fundraiser, then the “Showcase” is something they should consider, as we are providing booth space at no cost; yes, totally free. Help spread the word about the event as online vendor registration will begin soon. In addition to the “Showcase”, this year GCTAB will also be coordinating and expanding the what we call the “Countywide Christmas Open House”. We recognize that many shops, boutiques, and antique Continued on Next Page.

stores often host a special event to welcome the holiday season to early shoppers looking for gifts and Christmas décor for their home. Therefore, GCTAB has been coordinating with any business that sells antiques, collectibles, unique gifts, or handmade items to encourage them to schedule their individual events all on the same day allowing the promotion of the event with a list of participating locations. We realize that it is not uncommon for a group of ladies to head to a destination on any given Saturday in November or December, but if they knew of all of the different locations they could visit on a single day, then they might come and spend the day in Greene County. This year we will be coordinating the event on Saturday, November 9th. Look for more information as we approach the holiday season. The Greene County Tourism Advisory Board encourages you to take a look at our website, “like” us on Facebook, and pick up a copy of the Tourism Brochure to share with your family and other visitors that may be potential visitors to our communities. We also hope that you will keep these events in mind as you plan your schedules this fall. As with any business or product, the best way to promote tourism opportunities in Greene County is by word of mouth. So, prepare what has been coined as a “3-second elevator speech” and tell the world that you are not “just” from Greene County, rather, be proud that you “are” from Greene County! The Greene County Tourism Advisory Board (GCTAB) holds its meetings the 4th Thursday of each month (except June, November, & December) from 6pm-7:30pm at the Greene County Fairgrounds and is open to anyone interested in joining our conversation about Greene County Tourism. For more information or to join our mailing list, contact David Benefiel at solutions.dab@gmail.com or (765) 749-0321.

Many Exciting Things are Happening at Greene County General Hospital

By: Greene County General Hospital

L

ast month, a ribbon cutting and dedication ceremony was held for the first phase of a $7.5 million construction project. The first phase of the project included renovating the hospital’s main lobby, main entrance, physical therapy department, pharmacy, gift shop, and chapel. Other phases of the construction project include expansion of the emergency department as well as the remodel of the lab and radiology departments. The entire project will add approximately 8,500 square feet to the facility – with 8,000 square feet being added to the emergency department. The new emergency department is expected to be completed in August. Through the project, the hospital is making a big investment in the community. “Healthcare is such an important part of a community. It means a lot to individuals, and it means a lot to businesses in the community. And by expanding our hospital it just shows how committed we are to serving Greene County,” said Brenda Reetz, Greene County General Hospital’s newly appointed CEO. The project added much needed space to the hospital’s physical therapy department. “We’ve gone from three beds to six now, and with the additional space we’re able to accommodate so many additional patients at one time. So we’ve been able to hire additional staff, and now we can get patients in a lot faster,” said Kristen Goodman, who manages the physical therapy department. In the department’s previous space, patients sometimes had to wait for up to two weeks for their initial evaluation due to lack of space and limitations of staff. “Now they may have to wait one to two days, so that is a lot better for patients that are in pain and wanting to get in,” Goodman said.

July 4th 2013 Special Print Edition

Exciting things are also happening at Greene County Health – a wholly owned subsidiary of Greene County General Hospital. A newly built clinic was recently opened in Bloomfield for Dr. Owen Batterton and his staff. The new clinic, located at 44 South Judge Street, offers much more space than Dr. Batterton’s previous location. A new clinic at the WestGate @ Crane Technology Park is currently being built. It’s expected to open in August. It will operate as a walk-in clinic offering a variety of services including physicals, lab collection, x-rays, and occupational health services. Greene County Health has added two physicians since the beginning of the year – all of which are located at Greene County Health-Lone Tree. Providers added include: Pete Powers, MD and Chris Holmes, MD. Dr. Powers also serves as the hospital’s hospitalist. Dr. Holmes, a pediatrician, sees patients – newborn to age 18. Greene County Health is a family practice physician group offering full spectrum family medicine. Greene County Health’s clinics accept patients of all ages treating such diseases as diabetes, high cholesterol, and hypertension. Procedures, such as lesion removal, colonscopy, endometrial ablation, and vasectomy are available. In addition, they offer sports physicals, well child exams, and DOT and CDL physicals. For questions about this story contact Halea Franklin - Marketing Coordinator for Greene County General Hospital.

She has been crisscrossing the County since late May to gathering information and covering events that range from art festivals to local crime incidents. Daryn Lewellyn says that creating a website like NewsBarb that offers local news to the public for free has been a dream of his for several years and “with the help of some really energetic young people with mad skills, we are making it a reality.” View the latest local news by visiting NewsBarb.com on your digital device.
