In addition to soothing the digestive tract and indigestion, peppermint leaves have been shown to help alleviate the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. Fresh peppermint and peppermint leaves have long been used to treat a variety of stomach conditions.

eppermint has long been known for both its great taste and its soothing medicinal properties. Many people use peppermint leaves, brewed in tea for example, to soothe stomach ailments and other mild illnesses. Fresh peppermint and peppermint leaves have long been used for these purposes, both in traditional medicine and in modern terms.

Peppermint has also been shown to retard the growth of many varieties of bacteria and fungi. Peppermint is thought to help relieve symptoms of allergies and asthma as well.

When shopping for peppermint leaves it is important to find a source that uses modern manufacturing techniques and that does as little processing as possible.

Growing your own peppermint plants is the best option for the freshest leaves. Peppermint is generally easy to grow, and on top of providing a great scent, growing peppermint around the perimeter of a home can help discourage ants from entering the house. There are many ways to prepare peppermint leaves, but the most popular way to prepare fresh peppermint leaves is to brew it into a tea. The aroma of the peppermint as it steams can be just as therapeutic as the peppermint itself, so be sure to breathe in the scent of the peppermint to maximize its healing value. One popular way to brew tea from peppermint is to use one or two teaspoons of dried peppermint leaves. Pour very hot, but not boiling, water over the leaves, and cover the cup to prevent the valuable volatile oils from being lost. Allow this mixture to steep for 10 minutes, then strain and drunk as tea. Happy Holidays!

A vast undertaking comes Virgil’s way for 2008. Virgil will offer his services to Roddenberry Productions out of California. I am a big, big fan of Virgil’s music and I felt it was high time for him to mingle with the “Hollywood” scene. So I took it upon myself to speak with the Producer at Roddenberry Productions and offered tons of praise for Virgil’s work as well as sending him a sample of Virgil’s music. I was so happy to receive news from Virgil that Roddenberry Productions contacted him and invited him to work with them on some projects next year. So keep your ears open for Virgil’s intriguing music to compliment the Roddenberry website and more next year. Virgil will also be scoring three movies for AMG

To hear his music, visit his website at www.virgilmusic.net. His work can be quite inspirational. I would recommend the albums titled “Night Sins” and “Child of Light (a Christmas CD).” You may purchase his CDs via several online music vendors (click on the catalogue page on Virgil’s website to see a list of vendors). Virgil’s website announces his latest CD releases. I recently attended the “Night Sins” soundtrack CD release party and was lucky to share in the company of other artists who were there to celebrate Virgil’s accomplishment with him. The “Night Sins” soundtrack CD was influenced by my “Guardian” series books, and the CD will be featured on the covers for books 8-10. I highly recommend music lovers to acquire Virgil Franklin’s music CD’s. (continued on next page)

ooking for something unique to give your loved one or friend for Christmas? Looking for that perfect gift they will enjoy months later? If so, then Charolette Aydelotte of Linton has what you’ve been looking for. You don’t have to fight the crowds at the store. You don’t have to travel for miles. You don’t have to go online. You don’t have to settle for what’s left. You can give a gift that is reflective of the receiver’s personality. Charolette, owner and operator of “r-u-diggin’-it” offers the perfect personalized gift for your friend or loved one. She first saw purses made from license plates and other items and the concept intrigued her as she is a lover of arts and Charolette Aydelotte crafts. But she felt that an item such as a purse should reflect the owner’s personality or what they liked in life. She then got the idea to use old LP album (vinyl records) covers to create what she calls “portable art”. Back in June of this year, Charolette created her first purse from an old “Chicago” band album cover. She then took it around to friends, showed it to them and asked, “Are you digging it?” That was how she came up with the name of

www.lintonian.com

DECEMBER‘07 her business. After that, people asked her to make a purse for them created from their favorite album cover. She then began to collect as many authentic LP albums as she could get her hands on. Family and friends even pitched in to help. Among those who’ve assisted in the treasure hunt are John Danner of Linton, the “Headstone” shop in Terre Haute, and “The Record Cellar” in Vincennes. “The fun is in seeking the album which someone has requested,” Charolette shares with a smile. It is quite evident that Charolette loves the work she does. Charolette’s sister created business cards for the portable artwork. Her sister and mother still help out by locating album covers and with setting the grommets in the purses. Lamar Printing in Linton assisted Charolette as she perfected the process of creating the portable art purses. The process by which to generate the unique purses is quite an undertaking. I watched as Charolette made one from scratch and it was amazing. It takes time to cut the album cover, make all sides match up, laminate all the parts, punch out the holes, pound in the grommets, lace it up, and attach the handles. Once the purse is completed, Charolette then signs and numbers it. It is tedious work but one can see as Charolette is creating the portable art that her heart is in it—it’s a labor of love—love for art. For a look at Charolette’s work, visit the “Francisco de Borja” coffee house in downtown Linton. A few samples of her work are on display there. A note to those who are into current bands, there are LP (vinyl) albums being made today. So you’re in luck if you’d like a purse made from your favorite singer or band that performs today. You can find Charolette’s art on E-Bay if you enjoy the competition that an auction provides. But if you live in or near Linton, why go to all that trouble? Just give Charolette a call, tell her what you’re looking for, and set up a time to pick up the finished product. The price of a unique portable art purse is $50.00. If you bring in your own album cover you will save $3.00 off the price of the purse. Want more besides the purse from your favorite album?

Charolette has you covered. She can create a coaster from the center of the vinyl record, melt the LP and fashion it into a bowl or cake plate, or even a bird feeder. In other words, she can construct a “retro” item that you can display in your home. When asked which album has been made into a purse the most she smiles and replies, “Pink Floyd.” I viewed some pictures she’s taken of her work and it is quite impressive. I was most intrigued by a picture of a table setting for a party. The table was decorated with LP coasters for the drinks to rest upon, vinyl records for the plates to sit upon, and another vinyl record (fashioned into a bowl) was the centerpiece in which flowers had been splayed. It was like nothing I’ve ever seen before. It was most definitely an eyecatching table. Other art that Charolette creates are port-a-files (file folder and dividers made out of music album covers), port-a-pic albums, bride and groom baseball hats, and diva household gloves. Charolette would like to thank the following persons for helping her over the past few months: Lamar Printing, John Danner, owners/operators of the Francisco de Borja Coffee House, her sister, mother, and her father—Big Ed. If you want to surprise your loved one or friend with the perfect gift for Christmas then give Charolette a call at 812847-7269. Leave a message and a return phone number and she’ll get back with you. She will be taking orders for the portable art purses until December 20th.

DECEMBER‘07 Of late, Kade completed his second album “Two Hands” which features 11 original finger-style compilations. “Two Hands” displays Puckett’s musical talent as well as his knack at drawing the listener into his musical world. Not missing a beat Puckett has released a very inspired album in time for the holiday season. “I decided to record a Christmas album this year after several people requested that I make one. I have always recorded an album annually at Christmas but this is the first time it features Christmas music,” Puckett said. By: Virgil Franklin

he smell of fresh-brewed coffee wafting through the air accompanied by fleet-fingered acoustic guitar melodies evoking the sounds of Atkins and Watkins can only mean one thing; Kade Puckett is in the house. As the testimonial on his mySpace page reads, Kade currently writes, records, and edits his own music from his home-based studio in Linton, Indiana. He has 22 years of experience playing the guitar and specializes in finger-style among other genres such as jazz, rock, blues, and funk. His stockpile of music includes more than 75 original acoustical/Indie songs. Puckett has also recorded and produced more then 200 original songs of various musical genres in which he plays all instruments. He began playing guitar at the age 13 after being influenced by his grandfather who introduced him to the music of Chet Atkins. At the ripe old age of 23 he appeared at the Grand Ole Opry as the lead guitar player with a local country-western band. Kade has also performed as a solo act for the past 18 years treating listeners to his vast musical palette appearing at everything from local music festivals to more intimate coffee house concerts. Though Kade is known for his electric guitar playing skills, he is currently focusing on playing acoustical finger style. Puckett recently attended a Tommy Emmanuel workshop in which he played Atkins’ “Happy Again” with the Australian guitar wizard. Kade also appeared with regional entertainer Lloyd Wood at the Boot City Opry House in Terre Haute. He is scheduled to play the show again on Dec. 22 at 7:30 p.m.

The album is titled “Kade Puckett’s Guitar Christmas 2007”—which includes nine acoustical renditions of popular Christmas songs. “Christmas Time is Here is my favorite song on the Christmas album. The song comes from the Peanuts cartoon “Charlie Brown Christmas,” Puckett explained.“I grew up watching Peanuts cartoons and as a child, I always loved the jazz piano music in the shows.” Other familiar Christmas songs on Kade Puckett’s Guitar Christmas 2007 include “The First Noel” and “Oh Little Town of Bethlehem”. Concerning Puckett’s musical prowess, local music store owner, luthier and multi-instrumentalist Fred Markle adds,” On a rare occasion you will run across a gifted person; one who excels above the norm. I have watched Kade evolve over the years, since he was a child. When he was learning the guitar, his dad (Russ), a gifted guitar player in his own right, told me he could show Kade something on the guitar, and he would play it back to him the next day to perfection. Kade’s playing has truly matured to a professional level. It is an experience to listen to Kade live. As a guitar player myself for 40 years, I am truly amazed to watch his work on the fret board. He also has the gift to move your emotions. He can make you feel happy or sad by his artistic ability. The three CDs he has recorded and produced, (one takes), no over dubbing, are true works of art! I truly enjoy turning down the lights, getting a cup of coffee, and playing one of Kade’s CD’s.” For booking or other information call 812-798-2302 or email at hairlobebone@yahoo.com. Samples of Puckett’s incredible musical skills can be heard on his mySpace page at www.myspace.com/kadepuckett.

THE LAST TIME I SAW SANTA

his article is for the person who believes that a pair of clean feet might be used as a food processor. This article is for the people who think that the fire department visiting their back yard fire pit may signal the start of a good meal. This article is for the person that believes recipes can taste the same even if you do not have all the ingredients. So, put on your goggles and make sure you have some band aides handy. Let’s begin full contact cooking with Tim. This month’s article is going to be based on a seasonal dish. We are going to build pumpkin risotto. This little dish has a beautiful yellow color and a creamy flavor.

PUMPKIN RISOTTO Ingredients:

True Story by Fred Markle

Hardware: 1 large saucepan 1 nonstick frying pan 1 potato peeler 1 long blade knife First, you should remove the top of the pumpkin and remove the seeds. At this point, take the potato peeler and skin the pumpkin. After the pumpkin is skinned, cut the pumpkin into bite-sized pieces and set aside. Next, chop the pancetta. Place it in the nonstick frying pan and pan fry until it is crispy and brown. The pancetta should be drained and set aside. In a large saucepan, place the pumpkin and the shallots. After adding the oil, the contents of the saucepan should be sautéed for about 6 to 7 minutes. After that time, add the rice into the pan and allow the rice to brown for approximately 3 minutes. Pour the wine into the pan and cook until the wine is reduced. Now for the magic. Add about 1/3 of the chicken stock into the saucepan and stir until the stock is completely absorbed. Continue to add stock until all of the stock has been added in the pan.

¼ cup chopped pancetta 2 ½ cups chicken stock 2 large shallots, chopped 1 pound pumpkin flesh, bite size ¼ cup fresh grated Parmesan cheese 2 tbsp mascarpone cheese ½ cup white wine 6 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 1 cup Arborio rice (regular rice will work in a pinch) All of these ingredients are available locally at Angell’s.

The rice will now be giving off its starches and making the concoction appear to be creamy. Once the grains are tender, mix in the mascarpone, pancetta, and 1/3 of the freshly grated Parmesan. Don’t use the shaker parmesan for this because it does not add the right amount of flavor or saltiness the dish requires. Add additional salt or pepper to satisfy your tastes. I want to tell a true story that happened to me many years ago. It was around 1962 or 63 when my Mom and I went shopping in Terre Haute for Christmas. It was something we did every year. All the big stores downtown were decorated to the fullest. Christmas music was everywhere. What a treat it was to see all the new toys. One of the most important events of that annual trip was to meet Santa. Yes, the one and only! It was a bit confusing to go to Shultz and Co. or Woolworth’s to see Santa, because I knew the real Santa was at Roots. He was there every year, right there in the Roots Furniture Department on Ohio St. I had practiced my speech. I knew just what to tell him. I wasn’t going to goof it up like I had in the past years or freeze up like so many kids do. I was ready! I marched right into the room filled with Christmas trees and lights, huge candy canes, and a large throne-like chair where Santa sat and greeted all the children. To my dismay, there was a sign on the chair, “SANTA IS OUT FEEDING THE REINDEER. HE WILL BE BACK IN ONE HOUR.” How could this be? I have waited all year for this moment. Could he have fed them in the morning like we feed the cattle? Mom assured me it would be all right, that we would go next door and eat lunch at the Goodie Shoppe. Food always was a deterrent for me. I still remember the great chicken and noodles they made. So, off to lunch, and then lookout Santa! After finishing a great lunch, we went back to Roots. When we entered the room, a great commotion was going on. The room was filled with children. I looked towards Santa’s Throne. There he was, all red faced, “Ho Ho Ho’s” with a waver in his voice. He was kind of slouched down in his chair and his feet were all spread out like Grandpa after a huge meal. What was wrong with Santa? He certainly seemed happy! Just then, the worst happened – something that changed my life in just one moment. Two men came into the room and grabbed Santa. They proceeded to drag him out of the room. Though he seemed kind of limp, he was still shouting out “Ho Ho Ho’s” and “Merry Christmas” at the top of his lungs. Many of the children were shouting out, “They are hurting Santa. They are hurting Santa,” but no one came to Santa’s rescue. I was in shock. I was at the age that I just starting to wonder about Santa. All the way home mom kept busting out laughing. I was very confused about the whole incident. Later years when I learned about Santa, I also found out that Santa not only fed his reindeer, but he stopped by the Saratoga Bar for lunch. Roots never had the real Santa back ever again!
