Liebe Leserin, lieber Leser,

Dear Reader, ‘Actions speak louder than words’.

Had this remarkable piece of wisdom not have been penned by Erich Kästner, it could have stemmed from us. In spite of all the global political, economic and climate threatening crises, we never lose our sense of optimism – on the contrary. We take on these challenges together with our employees and share a strong belief in a positive future.

For example, as part of KTR’s growth strategy, we have commissioned a 2,000 square metre logistics hall for our cooler business at our headquarters in Rheine, so as to accommodate the expansion of this important business sector. Its roof is home to a 250 kW solar plant which supplies sustainable electricity for the operation of the hall.

And as you have undoubtedly noticed, the KTR Yearbook has undergone a makeover. Not only is the layout more reader-friendly and modern, but the magazine’s name has also changed – to ‘KTR Insight’.

The section names have also been updated: our ‘Success Stories’ can now be found under ‘Stories’, our ‘News’ under ‘Spotlight’ and ‘Products & Services’ under ‘What’s new?’.

So haben wir an unserem Stammsitz in Rheine eine 2.000 Quadratmeter große Logistikhalle für unser Kühlergeschäft in Betrieb genommen, um dem Ausbau dieses wichtigen Geschäftszweiges als Teil der KTRWachstumsstrategie Rechnung zu tragen. Auf dem Dach befindet sich eine 250-Kilowatt-Solaranlage, die nachhaltig erzeugten Strom für den Betrieb der Halle liefert.

Im September konnten wir die Investition in das „KTR Exhibition Center“, kurz KEC, mit der Eröffnung des multifunktionalen Gebäudes abschließen. Die rund 750 Quadratmeter werden genutzt als Ausstellungsfläche für unsere Produkte, für Kunden- und Informationsveranstaltungen, Workshops und Schulungen, aber mit Kiosk und Terrasse auch als Treffpunkt für unsere Mitarbeiter.

Und wie Sie sicherlich schon bemerkt haben, hat das KTR Yearbook eine Überarbeitung erfahren. Nicht nur das Layout wurde lesefreundlicher und moderner gestaltet, auch der Titel unseres Magazins hat sich geändert, er lautet nun „KTR Insight“.

Neu sind auch die Namen der Rubriken: Unsere „Success Stories“ finden Sie jetzt unter „Stories“, unsere „News“ unter „Spotlight“ und „Products & Services“ unter „What’s new?“.

Enough said – enjoy reading our new issue. And let’s reflect on a year that has not been particularly easy, yet without losing our optimistic view of the future – a future filled with things new, good and brighter that the coming year will bring us – as long as we take suitable actions.

In September we celebrated the completion of our investment in the KTR Exhibition Center – KEC for short – with the opening of the multifunctional building. The approximately 750 square metre area is used as an exhibition space for our products as well as for customer and information events, workshops and seminars. It is also a venue where our employees can meet and includes a kiosk and terrace.

In the midst of activities: the KEC In September 2023 we opened the „KTR Exhibition Center“, in brief KEC, at the headquarters in Rheine. The gererously glazed building with a surface of about 750 square metres is to be used in a variety of ways: as an exhibition room for KTR products, for customer and informational events, workshops and trainings, but also as a meeting place for the KTR staff including a kiosk and a terrace.

KTR’s CEO Nicola Warning explains: „The KEC is a multifunctional building providing a new platform for digital and analogous communication with customers, staff and stakeholders serving as a fancy meeting place for the employees enhancing their working site’s appeal.“ 6

Growth Wachstum requires space braucht Platz The expansion of the cooler business is an integral part of KTR’s growth strategy, and one which is successful as shown by the steadily increasing space requirements of the Cooling Systems business division. A 2,000 square metre logistics building has recently been put into operation at our headquarters in Rheine for storage of the KTR catalogue range of hydraulic oil and transmission oil coolers as well as customised MMC multi-circuit equipment.

This means KTR can consolidate its entire cooler logistics at the company premises in Rheine, enabling more efficient and flexible operations. Furthermore the facility comes with an ‘on top’ feature – literally speaking – in the form of solar collectors installed on the roof with an output of 250 kilowatts to provide sustainably generated electricity for the building.

Der Ausbau des Kühlergeschäftes ist Teil der KTR-Wachstumsstrategie. Diese Strategie ist erfolgreich, wie der stetig steigende Platzbedarf unseres Geschäftsfeldes Kühlsysteme zeigt. Automated guided vehicles (AGVs) are a source of flexibility when it comes to in-plant material flows.

They transport a diverse range of load carriers and goods to their destination and can be quickly adapted to changing requirements and travel paths. Although a long established concept, AGVs are now witnessing a decisive boom, which is also due to growing automation and Industry 4.0. A rigid conveyor

system is frequently not sufficiently flexible if a user wishes to remain agile and produce small batches with a high degree of automation.

Another reason for this upturn is the ongoing development in AGV technology. Vehicles can easily be programmed and navigate freely in a given space as well as avoid obstacles autonomously. Furthermore AGV manufacturers can use

modular ‘out of the box’ solutions for drive and control technology.

And the south German company ebm-papst has come up with just such an appliance. The world’s leading manufacturer of fans and drives has numerous application-specific all-in-one solutions in its portfolio – energy-efficient and tailor-made for each need. As of today this includes AGVs. →

Fahrerlose Transportfahrzeuge (FTF) bringen Flexibilität in den innerbetrieblichen Materialfluss. Reliable drive locking in an emergency

A compact and safe driving-steering system

ArgoDrive is the name given to ebmpapst’s AGV unit comprising a wheel, engine, gearbox, omnidirectional steering, sensors and electronics, which is a ready-to-install-andconnect drive in a compact housing.

Using two ArgoDrive driving-steering systems, an AGV can be directed over a level area and precisely positioned – even when starting from a stationary location and fully loaded.

The user can choose between three sizes with weights of either 100, 300 or 500 kilograms. A further option is an electronically synchronised allwheel drive, with four ArgoDrives, which drives and steers an AGV weighing up to a maximum of 2,000 kilograms – with an unrestricted caster angle, as well as on gradients up to a maximum of ten per cent.

It is not only the concept and the ‘packaging’ of the ArgoDrive that is innovative. So are the many detailed hardware and control technology solutions – likewise its safety systems. Head of Product Management in the Industrial Drive Technology division at ebm-papst, Patrick Schumacher, explains what really matters here: “In an emergency, for example if a person suddenly crosses an AGV’s travel path, it has to come to a stop very quickly“. In such circumstances, ArgoDrive can immediately perform an emergency stop – with a braking torque of 60 Newton metres. Because motorised deceleration is only feasible up to a maximum of 30 Newton metres, a supplementary mechanical brake is needed – designed as a latch system – which reliably locks the drive and can therefore be used as a holding brake, for example to prevent a damaged AGV on a ramp from unintentionally rolling away.

So far, so good. But one technicality in this elaborate concept still needs to be addressed as well as solved in practical terms. How can one prevent the latch system from hitting the drive train, causing the AGV and its load to become unsafe?

This is where KTR’s RUFLEX safety coupling comes into play. The operational principle of this load-holding, frictionally engaged overload protection is simple: should the preset torque be exceeded, the drive element will begin to slip. As soon as the torque drops below the specified threshold again, the torque flow is restored. This is precisely what the engineers at ebm-papst make use of when implementing this safety feature. As soon as an emergency stop signal is triggered, the RUFLEX interrupts the torque flow and slows the movement of the wheel. Then the real holding brake – the latch system – can intervene in a comparatively gentle way and reliably hinder uncontrolled movements, similar to a ‘safe stop’.

This innovative safety combination of an emergency and holding brake is already proving itself in practice.

Both users and ebm-papst are totally satisfied with it. As Patrick Schumacher states, “We looked around the market and tested various safety couplings. The RUFLEX was the best choice“. And from the perspective of many AGV manufacturers, the ArgoDrive offers the ideal solution, using the modular driving-steering system from ebm-papst.

Ein kompaktes und sicheres Fahr-Lenk-System

ArgoDrive heißt der FTF-Antrieb von ebm-papst: eine Einheit aus Rad, Motor, Getriebe, omnidirektionaler Lenkung, Sensorik und Elektronik, einbau- und anschlussfertig in einem kompakten Gehäuse untergebracht.

Mit zwei ArgoDrive-Fahr-Lenk-Systemen lässt sich ein FTF flächenförmig bewegen und präzise positionieren – auch aus dem Stand heraus und mit voller Beladung.

Dabei kann der Anwender zwischen drei Baugrößen für Gewichtsklassen von 100, 300 und 500 Kilogramm wählen. Möglich ist auch ein elektronisch synchronisierter Allradantrieb mit vier ArgoDrives, der ein maximal 2.000 Kilogramm schweres FTF antreibt und lenkt – mit unendlichem Lenkwinkel und auch bei Steigungen bis maximal zehn Prozent.

Zuverlässige Verriegelung des Antriebs im Notfall

Nicht nur das Konzept und das „Packaging“ des ArgoDrive sind innovativ, sondern auch viele Detaillösungen in der Hardware und der Steuerungstechnik – und die Sicherheitssysteme. Worauf es hier ankommt, erläutert Patrick Schumacher, Leiter Produktmanagement der KTRInsight Yearbook 2023 STORIES

Division Industrial Drive Technology von ebm-papst: „Im Notfall, wenn zum Beispiel ein Mensch plötzlich den Fahrweg kreuzt, muss ein FTF sehr schnell zum Stehen kommen.

Eine elektrische Motorbremsung reicht nicht immer aus, eine höhere Bremsleistung ist nötig.“ In diesen Fällen kann ArgoDrive eine sofortige Notbremsung ausführen – mit einem Bremsmoment von 60 Newtonmeter. Da motorisch eine Verzögerung bis maximal 30 Newtonmeter möglich ist, wird eine zusätzliche mechanische Bremse benötigt, die als Klinkensystem ausgebildet wird, das den Antrieb zuverlässig verriegelt und somit auch als Haltebremse verwendet werden kann, um zum Beispiel havarierte FTF auf Rampen gegen unbeabsichtigtes Losrollen zu sichern.

So weit, so gut. Aber ein Baustein fehlt noch in diesem ausgetüftelten Konzept bzw. eine Frage muss beantwortet, besser gesagt technisch gelöst werden: Wie kann man verhindern, dass das Klinkensystem mit einem mächtigen Schlag in den Antriebsstrang eingreift und das FTF und dessen Last in einen unsicheren Zustand bringt?

Hier kommt die RUFLEX-Sicherheitskupplung von KTR ins Spiel.

Das Funktionsprinzip dieses lasthaltenden, reibschlüssigen Überlastschutzes ist einfach: Wird das eingestellte Drehmoment überschritten, rutscht das Antriebselement durch. Sobald das Drehmoment wieder unter den eingestellten Grenzwert sinkt, wird der Drehmomentfluss wiederhergestellt. Eben das machen sich die Konstrukteure von ebm-papst bei der Realisierung der Sicherheitsfunktion zunutze: Wenn ein Not-Halt-Signal ausgelöst wird, unterbricht die RUFLEX den Drehmomentfluss und verlangsamt die Bewegung des Rades. Dann kann die eigentliche Haltebremse – das Klinkensystem – vergleichsweise sanft eingreifen und im Sinne eines „Safe Stop“ unkontrollierte Bewegungen zuverlässig vermeiden.

Dieses innovative Sicherheitssystem der Not- und Haltebremse bewährt sich bereits in der Praxis.

Sowohl die Anwender als auch ebmpapst sind vollständig zufrieden damit. Patrick Schumacher: „Wir haben uns auf dem Markt umgeschaut und verschiedene Sicherheitskupplungen getestet. Mit der RUFLEX passte es am besten.“ Und aus Sicht vieler FTF-Hersteller passt der ArgoDrive am besten: Sie setzen das modulare Fahr-Lenk-System von ebm-papst ein.

It is no coincidence that a fishfriendly screw pump has been invented in the Netherlands of all places – a country where more than a quarter of its geographical area lies below sea level and surrounded by dykes. This has worked well for decades and today, ever more land continues to be reclaimed from the sea which contributes towards coastal protection. However this requires that rainwater and, in part, groundwater is continuously pumped out of polders and transported via watercourses towards the ocean.

Dass eine fischfreundliche Schneckenpumpe ausgerechnet in den Niederlanden erfunden wurde, ist kein Zufall: Mehr als ein Viertel der Landesfläche liegt eingedeicht unter dem Meeresspiegel. Das funktioniert seit Jahrzehnten gut, und es wird bis heute auch im Sinne des Küstenschutzes immer mehr Land „unter Normalnull“ gewonnen. Das setzt allerdings voraus, dass Regenwasser und teilweise auch Grundwasser kontinuierlich aus den Poldern abgepumpt und über Fließgewässer in Richtung Meer transportiert werden.

In early days the Dutch managed this task by using steam and windmill-driven pumps. In the meantime Archimedean screw pumps with highly efficient electric drives delivering high outputs are more commonly employed. And to complement this, a recent fishfriendly pump novelty was launched

by FishFlow Innovations, based in Medemblik on the IJsselmeer. →

Harm-free journey for migratory fish

The conventional Archimedean screw pump consists of a long worm wheel diagonally placed in a pipe or trough which, when driven, causes water to be displaced upwards. However a large number of fish become injured while migrating from polders to the sea when conventional pumps are used. The engineers at FishFlow no longer wanted to tolerate this situation and developed a screw pump made of glass fibre-reinforced composite where the screw blades become narrower from the centre to the apex and, in contrast to regular pumps, are completely joined to the housing. This enables fish to gently make their way through the specially shaped screw so that they do not become trapped between the

screw and the housing. The result is a 100 percent fish-friendly screw pump!

This type of creature-protecting pump has already proved itself in numerous deployments across the globe. It is manufactured with diameters ranging from 80 centimetres to a substantial five metres and can pump up to ten cubic metres of water a second – which is 36,000 cubic metres per hour. Plans are currently being drawn up at FishFlow to construct enclosed Archimedes’ screws with a diameter of 10 metres and lengths up to 65 metres for ultra-low-cost hydroelectric power storage.

Targeted damping of torsional vibrations in the drive train

POLY-NORM AR torsionally flexible

shaft couplings are used in the fishfriendly closed screw pumps on the fast rotating side between the electric motor and the gearbox. This axial plug-in coupling series compensates all types of shaft misalignment while effectively dampening torsional vibrations in the drive system. The Dutch pump designers have installed a torsionally flexible REVOLEX KX-D pin and bush coupling on the slowspeed connection between the gearbox and the screw shaft. The coupling is fail-safe, maintenancefree and, thanks to its design and grey cast iron housing, extremely robust enabling torques of up to 430,000 Newton metres. Both types of coupling share a compact design, corrosion resistance and a very long service life for trouble-free operation of the pumps in the long term.

Also useable as energy-generating turbines

On the one hand FishFlow’s fishfriendly pumps can be used to drain polders, while on the other when the flow direction is reversed, they can also serve as turbines to generate energy. Meanwhile the pumps are not just used in the Netherlands but all over the world, for example in New Zealand. Its native long-finned eel – or orea as the Maori call them – can grow up to 180 centimetres, weigh over 25 kilograms and live up to 100 years, is able to comfortably overcome a difference in elevation without becoming injured by taking a ride in the ‘pump lift’!

Verletzungsfreie Reise für Wanderfische

Eine konventionelle archimedische Schneckenpumpe besteht aus einem langen Schneckenrad, das schräg in einem Rohr oder Trog platziert ist und bei Antrieb eine Aufwärtsverdrängung des Wassers bewirkt. Eine große Menge an Wanderfischen, die herkömmliche Pumpen nutzen, um so ihren Weg aus dem Polder zum Meer zu finden, verletzen sich beim Passieren dieser Pumpen. Damit wollten sich die Konstrukteure von FishFlow nicht abfinden und entwickelten eine Schneckenpumpe aus glasfaserverstärktem Kunststoff, bei der die Schneckenflügel von der Mitte zur Spitze schmaler werden und vollständig mit dem Gehäuse verbunden sind. Somit können die Fische sanft durch die speziell geformte

Förderschnecke gleiten und werden nicht zwischen Schnecke und Gehäuse eingeklemmt. Die Schneckenpumpe ist damit zu 100 Prozent fischfreundlich.

Diese Art der fischfreundlichen Pumpe bewährt sich weltweit bereits in zahlreichen Einsätzen. Sie wird mit Durchmessern von 80 Zentimetern bis zu stattlichen fünf Metern gefertigt und kann bis zu zehn Kubikmeter Wasser pro Sekunde fördern – das sind 36.000 Kubikmeter pro Stunde. Bei FishFlow werden derzeit Pläne ausgearbeitet, um Rohrschnecken mit einem Durchmesser von 10 Metern und einer Länge von 65 Metern für eine ultragünstige Wasserkraftspeicherung zu realisieren.

Gezieltes Dämpfen von Drehschwingungen im Antriebsstrang

Beiden Kupplungstypen gemeinsam sind die kompakte Bauweise, die Korrosionsfestigkeit und die sehr lange Lebensdauer für einen langfristig störungsfreien Betrieb der Pumpen.

In den fischfreundlichen Rohrschneckenpumpen kommen auf der schnell drehenden Seite zwischen Elektromotor und Getriebe drehelastische Wellenkupplungen vom Typ POLY-NORM AR zum Einsatz. Diese axial steckbare Kupplungsbaureihe gleicht alle Arten von Wellenversatz aus und dämpft zudem wirkungsvoll Drehschwingungen im Antriebssystem. Die fischfreundlichen Pumpen von FishFlow sind zum Entwässern von Poldern einsetzbar und, bei umgekehrter Fließrichtung, auch als Turbinen zur Energieerzeugung. Sie kommen nicht nur in den Niederlanden zum Einsatz, sondern weltweit, zum Beispiel in Neuseeland. Selbst der neuseeländische Langflossenaal, der bis zu 180 Zentimeter lang, über 25 Kilogramm schwer und bis zu 100 Jahre alt wird, kann den Höhenunterschied per „Pumpenlift“ bequem und verletzungsfrei überwinden.

Artificial turf neither grows nor does it need mowing. It likewise attracts no bugs nor insects and does not necessitate fertiliser or weedkiller.

In other words, it saves time and money after laying – and nerves too, as all the garden owners among us know. While artificial turf is more expensive to buy and, as with most products, the price increases with quality, there are basically no initial maintenance costs. What is more, it is also more resilient especially on sports grounds. But have you ever seen a natural grass playing field after a season of hard and demanding matches? There is little green to be seen because there are so many bare areas. There are those who won’t hear a word against lush, natural green grass that one can smoothly glide over which emits the inviting fragrance of a freshly mown summer lawn. And then there are others who consider durability to be everything – hard-wearing, long-lasting and easy to maintain. What is the point of breathing in the smell of a newly mown green space if its upkeep requires a lot of time and money?

Whatever remains is reused – in construction or for playgrounds

In recent years, the evolution of artificial turf has been impressive and it increasingly looks like real grass. This said, artificial turf is not completely free of maintenance and upkeep. Coarse dirt such as leaves or twigs and branches can easily be removed from the surface, whereas soiling in the form of dust and exhaust particles form a veil over the ‘grass’. In practical terms artificial lawns require cleaning at regular intervals and, additionally, occasional brushing or ‘sowing’ of filler material is advisable so that the individual grass blades are kept erect all the year round.

global terms, each year more than 1,000 artificial turf surfaces are removed with an average size of 7,500 square metres and weighing some 20 tons per pitch.

This is where technical support is provided by the TurfMuncher TM2000D, a self-propelled machine for removing artificial turf that was developed and is manufactured

by SMG Sportplatzmaschinenbau GmbH. The TurfMuncher spools the artificial turf, which has previously been cut into strips, in compact two metres rolls and almost completely recovers the fill material, such as valuable quartz sand. The collected materials are separated and reused – for new artificial turf surfaces, in the construction industry or even as kerbstones or mats for children’s playgrounds. This is real sustainability in action.

To deliver such results, the TurfMuncher is powered by a 35 kilowatt diesel engine which uses an MMC combined cooler for cooling hydraulic oil and engine coolant. A KTR component is also used to connect the engine with the hydraulics: this takes the form of a BoWex FLE-PA curved-tooth flange coupling which ensures vibrationfree power transmission.

The machine is operated using a swivel-mounted control panel. This comes in very handy, because i t t a ke s 14 h o u r s to re m ove a standard artificial turf pitch with the TurfMuncher TM2000D at a maximum working speed of seven metres per minute and a material discharge of up to 500 kilograms over the same period. In all honesty, aren’t figures like this enough to turn ANY garden owner green with envy.

Was bleibt, wird wiederverwendet – am Bau oder für Spielplätze

Die Entwicklung von Kunstrasen in den vergangenen Jahren ist beeindruckend, und er kommt echtem Rasen optisch schon sehr nahe.

Völlig wartungs- und pflegefrei ist aber auch Kunstrasen nicht. Grobe Verschmutzungen wie Laub oder Äste können einfach vom Rasenteppich aufgehoben werden, feinere Verschmutzungen wie Staub und Spuren von Abgasen legen sich als Schleier ab. Heißt: Auch der künstliche Rasen sollte in regelmäßigen Abständen gereinigt werden. Zudem ist gelegentliches Aufbürsten oder das Einstreuen von Verfüllmaterial angeraten, damit die Grashalme das ganze Jahr über schön aufgerichtet sind.

Irgendwann aber hilft auch das nicht mehr, dann ist auch der beste Kunstrasen verschlissen und muss ersetzt werden. Um ein paar Zahlen zu nennen: Jährlich werden weltweit mehr als 1.000 Kunstrasenfelder abgebaut, durchschnittliche Feldgröße: 7.500 Quadratmeter, KTRInsight Yearbook 2023 STORIES

Technische Unterstützung gibt es dazu unter anderem vom TurfMuncher TM2000D, einer selbstfahrenden Maschine zum Abbau von Kunstrasen, entwickelt und gefertigt von der SMG Sportplatzmaschinenbau GmbH. Der TurfMuncher w i c ke l t d e n vo r a b i n B a h n e n

geschnittenen Kunstrasen zu kompakten Rollen von zwei Metern auf und arbeitet dabei das Ver füllmaterial, zum Beispiel wer tvollen Quarzsand, nahezu vollständig aus. Die aufgenommenen Materialien werden

getrennt und wiederverwendet – für neue Kunstrasenflächen, die Baubranche oder auch als Randsteine oder Matten für Kinderspielplätze. Das ist gelebte Nachhaltigkeit.

Angetrieben wird der TurfMuncher von einem 35 Kilowatt starken Dieselmotor, die Kühlung von Hydrauliköl und Motorkühlwasser übernimmt ein MMC-Kombikühler. Auch bei der Verbindung zwischen Motor und Hydraulik ist eine K T R - Ko m p o n e nte im Einsatz: Hier sorgt eine BogenzahnFlanschkupplung vom Typ BoWex FLE-PA für schwingungsfreie Kraftübertragung.

Die Steuerung der Maschine erfolgt dabei über ein schwenkbares Bedienpult. Gut so, denn der Rückbau eines Standard-Kunstrasenfeldes mithilfe des TurfMuncher TM2000D braucht 14 Stunden bei einer maximalen Arbeitsgeschwindigkeit von sieben Metern pro Minute und einem Materialaustrag von bis zu 500 Kilogramm pro Minute –

ganz ehrlich: Das sind doch Werte, die jeden Gartenbesitzer vor Neid ganz grün werden lassen, oder?

How crackers readily jog their way into their packaging

Syntegon’s packaging system is not just a machine, but an interaction of technical precision and multi-component innovations. One of these, known as a vibratory channel, plays a central role as this is where the crackers are placed in an upright position before being carefully forwarded to the packaging process. The latest development in vibratory channels is a welcome improvement when it comes to the positioning and the packaging of small round snacks. The upgraded technology is not only far more

efficient, the noise level has also been significantly reduced thanks to the use of mechanical drives. For employees this comes as a much appreciated relief as the servomotors now emit less than 80 decibels.

What is more, the commissioning of mechanical drives requires much less time than that of electromagnetic drives.

But that’s only part of the story: thanks to the new technology less crackers break, meaning less food waste. And it’s clean too. The packaging machine is predominantly made of stainless steel and its

integrated crumb tray complies with each and every hygiene regulation.

All machine parts are easily accessible for cleaning, maintenance or retrofitting. Another technical finesse is the use of ROTEX GS servo couplings which are attached to the vibratory channel drives. The backlash-free couplings transmit torque from one shaft to another and are used wherever drives need to be precisely positioned. Furthermore they act as a buffer because the spider is elastic and designed to absorb shock as well as prevent unwelcome vibrations when the motor stops.

The ensuing result is for all cracker lovers – whether on a sofa, in front of a TV, during a football match or a relaxed picnic in the park. At the day’s end, they can thoroughly enjoy their mouthwatering snacks.

There’s no need to spend time thinking about how the delicious crackers hygienically found their way into their packaging without any damage. What remains is that unmistakable crunch when biting into a delicious snack.

Dieses Verpackungssystem ist nicht nur eine Maschine, sondern vielmehr ein Zusammenspiel technischer Präzision und Innovation, das aus vielen Komponenten besteht. Eine davon, bekannt als Vibratory Feeding Channels – Vibrationsrinnen –, spielt dabei eine zentrale Rolle: Dort werden die Cracker aufgerichtet und sorgsam dem Verpackungsprozess zugeführt.

Die jüngste Weiterentwicklung der Vibrationsrinnen ist eine willkommene Verbesserung beim Positionieren und Verpacken der kleinen runden Snacks. Die neue Technik ist nicht

nur deutlich effizienter, auch der Lärmpegel ist dank der eingesetzten mechanischen Antriebe erheblich gesunken. Eine willkommene Erleichterung für die Mitarbeiter. Denn der Geräuschpegel der Servomotoren liegt jetzt unter 80 Dezibel. Zudem erfordert die Inbetriebnahme des mechanischen Antriebs viel weniger Zeit als die Inbetriebnahme elektromagnetischer Antriebe.

Aber damit nicht genug: Dank der neuen Technik gehen auch weniger Cracker zu Bruch – Foodwaste, ade.

Und sauber geht es auch zur Sache: Die Verpackungsmaschine ist

hauptsächlich aus rostfreiem Edelstahl gefertigt und ihre integrierten Krümelschubladen erfüllen sämtliche Hygienevorschriften. Alle Teile der Maschine sind leicht zugänglich für Reinigung, Wartung oder Umrüstung.

Eine weitere technische Finesse sind die Servokupplungen ROTEX GS, die an den Antrieben für die Vibrationsrinnen angebracht sind. Die spielfreien Kupplungen übertragen das Drehmoment von einer Welle zur anderen und kommen überall dort zum Einsatz, wo Antriebe exakt positioniert werden müssen. Zudem wirken sie wie ein Puffer, denn ihr Zahnkranz ist elastisch und darauf

ausgelegt, Stöße abzufangen und unliebsame Nachschwingungen zu verhindern, wenn der Motor stoppt.

Für alle Cracker-Liebhaber, ob auf dem Sofa, vor dem Fernseher, während des Fußballspiels oder beim entspannten Picknick im Park: Am Ende können sie das Knuspern in vollen Zügen genießen. Sie müssen sich keine Gedanken machen, wie die leckeren Cracker hygienisch und unbeschädigt den Weg in ihre Verpackung finden. Was bleibt, ist der unverwechselbare „Knack“ beim Biss in den leckeren Snack.

The mystery of the falling skyscrapers Das Geheimnis der fallenden Wolkenkratzer Hong Kong Island’s Peak Tram is not only one of the oldest and most iconic funicular railways in the world, it is more than likely the only one that has ever been the subject of a scientific study in the field of psychology. This arose because anyone who takes a ride on the popular 1.36 kilometre tourist route to Victoria Peak experiences a spectacular, yet for many highly unsettling optical illusion. The skyscrapers next to the tracks appear to progressively tilt toward the nearby mountain and virtually

fall onto it. A study published in 2013 in the Psychological Science journal investigated and explained the so-called ‘Peak Tram Illusion’.

Simply described, it is the result of an altered subjective perception of vertical objects, brought about by the passenger’s reclining seat position on the steep journey.

Since 2022 it has been possible to experience this remarkable delusion in far greater comfort – thanks to recent comprehensive modernisation carried out on the Peak Tram railway. →

More comfort and reduced waiting times for the uphill ride

The popular Peak Tram attraction has, since 1888, been shuttling passengers from the lower terminus at 30 metres above sea level to the V ictoria Peak summit area at 396 metres and back with a variable gradient between 7 to 26 degrees.

When first commissioned the funicular, which was operated by the Peak Tramways Company Limited, was considered a technical phenomenon. It rapidly became popular with residents and visitors to Hong Kong Island, the densely populated area south of mainland Hong Kong.

During its first year of operation, the Peak Tram attracted around 150,000 passengers.

Mehr Komfort und weniger Wartezeit auf dem Weg nach oben

Seit dem Jahr 1888 befördert die Peak Tram Fahrgäste von 30 auf 396 Meter über dem Meeresspiegel in die Gipfelregion des Victoria Peak – auf einer Fahrstrecke, die eine Steigung von 7 bis 26 Grad aufweist. Bei ihrer Inbetriebnahme galt die von der „Peak Tramways Company Limited“ betriebene Standseilbahn als technisches Wunderwerk. Sie wurde schnell zu einer populären Attraktion für Anwohner und Besucher von Hong Kong Island, einer dicht bevölkerten Insel im südlichen Teil von Hongkong. In ihrem ersten Betriebsjahr hatte die Peak Tram bereits rund 150.000 Passagiere.

Deren Zahl war rund 130 Jahre später und nach mehreren technischen Überarbeitungen von Bahnstrecke und Fahrzeugen auf mehr als sechs Millionen pro Jahr angewachsen.

Dadurch kam es zu langen Wartezeiten, auch wegen der beschränkten Platzkapazität in den Fahrzeugen.

Aus diesem Grund beschlossen die Betreiber, die Bahn erneut komplett zu modernisieren – um mit der KTRInsight Yearbook 2023 STORIES

Some 130 years later and after several technical track and vehicle modifications, that number recently grew to more than an annual six million people. This had resulted in long waiting times, partly due to the limited seating capacity in the carriages. So the operators decided to completely modernise the funicular yet again, making it possible in their sixth generation Peak Tram to offer guests a “more pleasant, more efficient and more comfortable experience”.

The Swiss company Garaventa – a specialist with plenty of experience in aerial tramways, funiculars, material ropeways as well as complicated rope hoist work – was commissioned with the project. The upgrade work began at the end of 2018 and included newly developed carriages offering space for 210 passengers instead of the previous 120. This 75 per cent increase in capacity significantly reduces delays at the stations. As the new carriages are more powerful and

Dafür wurden neue Fahrzeuge entwickelt, die statt wie bisher 120 jetzt 210 Passagieren Platz bieten – eine Erhöhung der Fahrgastkapazität um 75 Prozent, was die Wartezeiten an den Stationen wesentlich verkürzt.

Da die neuen Fahrzeuge mächtiger und länger sind, musste auch die gesamte Seilbahntechnik erneuert werden, inklusive der Antriebs- und Steuerungssysteme.

Als neuen Antrieb der Peak Tram realisierte Garaventa ein einzigartiges Doppelwindensystem: Eine 85 Tonnen schwere Winde wickelt im Pendelbetrieb gleichzeitig ein Seil ab und das andere auf. Sie verfügt über acht Bremszangen. Der Antrieb erfolgt über zwei in Serie geschaltete

Garaventa developed a unique 85 ton double winch system for the new Peak Tram drive which simultaneously winds up one cable while unwinding the other in jig-back operation. It is driven by two electric motors connected in series which in normal operation run simultaneously with an overall rated power of 1,600 kilowatts.

Their three-stage helical-bevel gear unit was manufactured by SEW-EURODRIVE for nominal torques of up to 936,000 Newton metres. SEW’s Swiss subsidiary Alfred Imhof AG was responsible for the project planning of the gear unit. This new drive technology’s couplings were provided by KTR. A RADEX-N NANA 4 has been

The remodelled Peak Tram was ceremoniously opened in August 2022. Every day since, numerous passengers still hold their breath for a moment, thinking they are seeing some huge skyscrapers tilting towards the mountainside.

Time means Life The ‘Red Zone’ at the Karowe diamond mine in north eastern Botswana is a high-security area – the space where mined gems graded.

Anyone entering this sector has to pass through a series of huge, heavy doors that are fingerprint scan activated and opened. Behind the doors, body contact with other people is prohibited, as is carrying mobile phones. Should someone drop anything, they have to bend down very slowly and display the retrieved item clearly in front of the nearest camera. When leaving the Red Zone, it is a matter of course that every single person is subjected to a body search.

Safety is not only a key priority in the grading area but throughout the Karowe diamond mine which belongs to Lucara Diamonds Corp, a Canadian mining company. Some spectacular finds have already been unearthed at Karowe thanks to its ‘Large Diamond Recovery XRT’ technology introduced in 2015.

In the same year, the ‘Lesedi La Rona’, meaning ‘Our Light’, was discovered – an almost flawless 1,109 carat white diamond. This was followed in 2019 with the amazing 1,758 carat ‘Sewelô’, or ‘Rare Find’. →

Und wer etwas fallen lässt, darf sich nur ganz langsam bücken und muss den aufgehobenen Gegenstand deutlich in die nächstmögliche Kamera halten. Dass beim Verlassen der roten Zone jede und jeder einer Leibesvisitation unterzogen wird, versteht sich von selbst.

Sicherheit wird großgeschrieben in der Karowe-Diamantenmine. Das gilt vor allem für den Sortierbereich.

Die Mine gehört der kanadischen Minenfirma Lucara Diamonds Corp., die mit ihrer im Jahr 2015 eingeführten Technologie „Large Diamond Recovery XRT“ bereits einige spektakuläre Funde zu Tage fördern konnte: noch im selben Jahr den „Lesedi La Rona“ (übersetzt: „Unser Licht“), einen nahezu makellosen weißen Diamanten von 1.109 Karat, vier Jahre später den „Sewelô“, den „Seltenen Fund“, mit stolzen 1.758 Karat. →

Surviving the ‘golden hour’

Regardless of a diamond’s weight, its security is taken care of in the Red Zone. This benefits corporate equity. Yet there is another area where Lucara has invested in a far greater asset – in the physical integrity of its miners. And this takes the form of a different safety technology – a new mobile rescue winch.

Admittedly this sounds far less spectacular than some of the world’s largest diamond discoveries, but it saves something far more precious – human lives. Especially as accidents or collapses in mines are a perpetual threat to miners.

According to the ILO (International Labour Organisation), mining accounts for eight per cent of all fatal work-related accidents worldwide.

This has, amongst other things, to

do with the rescue winches currently in use, which often prove to be too slow and not mobile enough when accidents occur. Speed is of utmost importance during rescue operations, as the chances of survival after an accident are highest during the so-called ʻgolden hour of shock’.

Being aware of this fact, the South African company Tech Edge has developed a novel, mobile rescue winch. Its advantage is that the compact hoist and winder can be used in a very versatile way and at short notice for emergency operations, but also on construction sites or for shaft inspections. This technology requires no permanent infrastructure and does away with complex installation and commissioning on site – the truck, including

the winder, is delivered in a fully operational condition.

Technology that will hopefully never be needed

This is a ʻsignificant advance in mine rescue technology’ for Tech Edge, delivering improved mobility, multi-purpose functionality and the ability to rapidly deploy deep underground which significantly increases the safety and efficiency of rescue operations.

Yet brakes also need to be applied, in the truest sense of the word. That is why two KTR-STOP M hydraulic brakes are used on the cable winch.

the benefit of operating free of axial forces, thereby precluding damage to the drive train, even in the event of misadjustment or installation errors. Furthermore, the use of guiding rings and the option to completely wear down the brake linings enable long maintenance intervals and thus optimise operating costs.

While time is money, above all, it is life. The new mobile rescue winch, with a cage that can carry six people and reach depths of up to 1,000 metres, was delivered to the Karowe mine at the end of 2022.

And while it may represent an innovation in mine rescue technology, hopefully no emergency will require its use for a long time.

Überleben in der „goldenen Stunde“

Denn Minenunglücke oder Einstürze in Bergwerken stellen eine ständige Bedrohung für Arbeiter dar. Nach Angaben der Internationalen Arbeitsorganisation (ILO) entfallen auf den Bergbau weltweit acht Prozent aller tödlichen Arbeitsunfälle. Das hat nicht nur, aber auch etwas mit den derzeit eingesetzten Rettungswinden zu tun, die sich im Unglücksfall oft als zu wenig mobil und zu langsam erweisen. schließlich ist Geschwindigkeit bei Rettungseinsätzen von größter Bedeutung: Innerhalb der „goldenen Stunde“, der „Golden Hour of Shock“ nach einem Unfall, sind die Überlebenschancen am höchsten.

Das südafrikanische Unternehmen Tech Edge ist sich dessen bewusst und hat eine neue, mobile Rettungswinde entwickelt. Ihre Vorteile: Das kompakte Wickel- und Fördersystem kann ebenso kurzfristig wie vielseitig für Notfalleinsätze, aber auch auf Baustellen oder für Schachtinspektionen verwendet werden.

Dazu braucht es keine permanente Infrastruktur und damit auch keine aufwändige Installation und Inbetriebnahme vor Ort – der Lkw samt Wickler wird in voll funktionsfähigem Zustand geliefert.

Doch es gilt auch zu bremsen, im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes: An der Seilwinde kommen zwei hydraulische Bremsen vom Typ KTR-STOP M zum Einsatz. Die federbetätigten, passiven Schwimmsattelbremsen fungieren als Betriebs-, Sicherheits- und Haltebremsen und packen mit jeweils 130 Kilonewton Klemmkraft zu. Sie bieten den Vorteil, axialkraftfrei zu arbeiten, und schließen somit selbst bei einer Fehleinstellung oder einem Fehler in der Installation eine Schädigung des Triebstrangs aus. Und: Der Einsatz von Führungsringen und die Möglichkeit, die Beläge vollständig zu verschleißen, ermöglichen lange Wartungsintervalle und optimieren die Betriebskosten.

Technologie, die hoffentlich nie zum Einsatz kommt

Für Tech Edge ein „bedeutender Fortschritt in der Grubenrettungstechnologie“, werden doch durch

Generating energy from waste is the idea behind biogas production.

When dung, agricultural slurry or other types of organic fertilizer are fermented, biogas or biomethane is generated and can be piped into a natural gas grid or used as truck fuel.

This is both practical and ecological and, as a source of bio energy, replaces fossil fuels. The Cloppenburg agricultural region in Germany’s Lower Saxony is home to some 80 biogas plants, mainly operated by farmers. Recently a further plant started operations which differs from all the others due to its size and output.

The initial development stage of this giga plant located on the Coastal Canal in Friesoythe facilitates the fermentation of residual and recyclable material in 18 tanks, each measuring both 25 metres in height and in width.

In 2024 forty of these bioreactors will be located there, enabling the processing of around one million tons of organic fertilizer into green fuel each year. This equates to 7,400 standard cubic metres of biomethane an hour. →

sich jedoch durch ihre Größe und Leistung von allen anderen unterscheidet.

Die erste Ausbaustufe der „Gigaanlage“ am Küstenkanal in Friesoythe ermöglicht die Vergärung des Restund Wertstoffs in 18 jeweils 25 Meter hohen und breiten Behältern; im Jahr 2024 sollen hier 40 dieser gigantischen Fermenter stehen. Dann wird die Anlage pro Jahr rund eine Million Tonnen Wirtschaftsdünger zu grünem Kraftstoff verarbeiten – mit einer Leistung von 7.400 Normkubikmetern Biomethan pro Stunde. →

The right agitator is crucial

Annual production corresponds to an energy content of about 690 gigawatt hours. In addition 105,000 tons of liquid CO2 are produced together with 8,000 tons of green ammonia over a 12 month period. This is a veritable ʻbio power plant’ on an industrial scale that makes a significant contribution to decarbonisation while reducing groundwater contamination caused by nitrates and other pollutants.

The yield from a biogas plant essentially depends on the homogenous mixture and fermentation of organic fertilizer – put another way this means having the proper industrial agitator in the bioreactor. The planner and principal contractor of the Friesoythe plant, revis bioenergy GmbH, opted for paddle agitators made by PRG Präzisions-Rührer GmbH. The ultra large agitators have 34

a shaft length of 22 metres with a total weight of 10 tons and operate 24/7, thereby making a decisive contribution towards biogas production efficiency.

PRG relies on MAXXDRIVE systems from the NORD DRIVESYSTEMS company for the drive technology of the individually planned agitators.

One reason for this choice is the drive system, which is very robust as well as explosion-proof as it is designed for ATEX Zone 1 (gas). After all, methane is flammable and the drives are mounted directly onto the bioreactors. So as to withstand high transverse forces, the MAXXDRIVE system is equipped with a VL3 bearing developed by NORD. The SAFOMI IEC adapter is another special feature that was developed specifically for agitators. It reduces the oil volume in the drive and makes it possible to do without an oil reservoir

Depending on the application, maintenance of a MAXXDRIVE unit is only necessary after ten years. The demands made of the coupling are equally high, however the ROTEX coupling is configured for this and, because it reduces the wear in the agitator drive, it also reduces the service outlay for the entire drive system.

Die XXL-Rührwerke haben eine Wellenlänge von 22 Metern und ein Gesamtgewicht von 10 Tonnen; sie sind im 24/7-Betrieb aktiv und leisten einen entscheidenden

Bei der Antriebstechnik der individuell projektierten Rührwerke setzt PRG auf die MAXXDRIVE-Industriegetriebemotoren von NORD DRIVESYSTEMS. Ein Grund für diese Wahl ist das Antriebssystem: Es ist sehr robust und zudem explosionsgeschützt, für die Gas-Ex-Zone 1, ausgeführt. Schließlich ist Methan entzündlich, und die Antriebe sind direkt auf den Fermentern angebracht. Um hohe Querkräfte aufnehmen zu können, sind die MAXXDRIVE-Industriegetriebemotoren mit der von NORD entwickelten VL3-Lagerung ausgestattet. Eine weitere Besonderheit, die speziell für Rührwerke entwickelt wurde, ist der SAFOMI-IEC-Adapter. Er minimiert das Ölvolumen im Antrieb und erlaubt den Verzicht sowohl auf einen Ölbehälter als auch auf einen Wellendichtring zwischen Getriebe und IEC-Zylinder. Das verringert den Wartungsaufwand und erhöht die Betriebssicherheit.

Die Jahresproduktion entspricht einem Energiegehalt von etwa 690 Gigawattstunden. Zusätzlich werden jährlich 105.000 Tonnen flüssiges CO2 und 8.000 Tonnen grüner Ammoniak gewonnen. Ein echtes „Biokraftwerk“ im industriellen Maßstab, das einen erheblichen Beitrag zur Dekarbonisierung leistet und zugleich die Belastung des Grundwassers mit Nitraten etc. reduziert.

Zehn Jahre wartungsfrei

Auch die Kupplung zwischen E-Motor und Getriebe leistet einen Beitrag zum störungsfreien Betrieb des Rührwerksantriebs. In den MAXXDRIVEAntrieben kommen drehelastische ROTEX-Klauenkupplungen zum Einsatz, sie dämpfen Stöße und reduzieren Drehschwingungen. Außerdem gleichen sie axialen, radialen und winkligen Wellenversatz aus und verlängern damit die Lebensdauer der angrenzenden Komponenten.

Genau wie das gesamte Antriebssystem ist auch die Kupplung für diesen Einsatz gemäß den ATEXRichtlinien ausgeführt – und auf lange Lebensdauer ausgelegt. Je nach Einsatzfall wird die Wartung eines MAXXDRIVE-Antriebs erst nach bis zu zehn Jahren fällig. Entsprechend hoch sind die Anforderungen an die Kupplung. Die ROTEX selbst ist darauf eingestellt – und weil sie den Verschleiß im Rührwerksantrieb vermindert, reduziert sie auch den Serviceaufwand für das gesamte Antriebssystem.

“Everyone is somewhat irritated by the long wait and just wants to reach Antarctica. But impatience was never a wise counsellor – especially not in the Cape Horn region. But finally the conditions seem to be more favourable – as favourable as can be expected for the Drake Passage ...” wrote the renowned German polar explorer and book author Arved Fuchs in his expedition logbook ‘Ocean Change 2015/16’ on 24 January 2016. His ship was anchored off Cape Horn where he and his crew were waiting for better circumstances so as to navigate the notorious Drake Passage. The strait between the southernmost point of South America and the northern tip of Antarctica is known for its difficult weather conditions and violent storms.

Fast forward to May 2023. Just over seven years later Arved Fuchs may have reflected on his logbook entry as he once again waited to traverse the Drake Passage. However this time, not as the head of an expedition in the southern polar seas, but as a guest of honour at the Miniatur Wunderland Hamburg. → KTRInsight Yearbook 2023 STORIES

Aber jetzt scheinen die Zeichen endlich günstiger zu stehen – so günstig, wie man es für die Drake-Passage eben erwarten kann ...“ Arved Fuchs, der bekannte deutsche Polarforscher und Buchautor, schreibt diese Zeilen am 24. Januar 2016 in das Logbuch seiner Expedition „Ocean Change 2015/16“. Er ankert mit Schiff und Crew am Kap Hoorn und wartet auf bessere Bedingungen, um die berüchtigte Drake-Passage bewältigen zu können. Die Meeresstraße zwischen der Südspitze Südamerikas und der Nordspitze der Antarktis ist für ihre schwierigen Wetterverhältnisse und heftigen Stürme bekannt.

Zeitsprung: Etwas mehr als sieben Jahre später, im Mai 2023, denkt Arved Fuchs vielleicht an seinen Logbuch-Eintrag zurück, als er erneut vor der Drake-Passage wartet.

Diesmal aber nicht als Expeditionsleiter im Polarmeer, sondern als Ehrengast im Miniatur Wunderland Hamburg. →

A unique experience – for sure

The build-up to the launch took nearly as long as the preparation of a polar expedition. On 3 May 2023 the founders of the Miniatur Wunderland Hamburg – Frederik and Gerrit Braun – ceremoniously opened the new Patagonia and Antarctica sections of this unique attraction in Hamburg’s historic Speicherstadt district. Four years of work on two continents and around two million euros had been invested to bring about this special occasion. Frederik Braun had previously travelled to Patagonia and enthusiastically explained that he had always dreamed of recreating this part of the world for Wunderland at some stage. “Now it has become a reality and what was almost impossible has been accomplished. We have been able to capture the beauty and vastness of this landscape in just 65 square metres”.

Visitors experience the breathtaking diversity of Patagonia in several meticulously designed settings. For example, the famous Perito Moreno glacier, rugged Andean mountain ranges and colourful Argentinean villages can be marvelled at. One of the

absolute highlights is the elaborate recreation of the Drake Passage natural spectacle, where a heavy storm regularly builds up, ships pitch and roll in ever-increasing swells, while video projections and sound effects add to the vivid sensation of the feared strait.

To recreate this scenery as realistically as possible, the Wunderland team worked together with the modelbuilding Martinez family from Buenos Aires. For a plausible three-dimensional simulation of undulating Drake Passage waves, the impassioned tinkerers devised some completely new technology: a complex mechanism actuates rows of interconnected levers to move in such a way that it creates very natural-looking waves on the cloth-covered surface of the replica. The fundamentals of this concept were inspired by the workings of a grand piano which the stripped-down

‘wave device’ actually resembles.

Its complex construction and incredible impact lend the Drake Passage a special status in Hamburg’s Miniatur Wunderland: no other mechanism comprises so many components.

To make its operation as reliable as possible, a SYNTEX safety coupling with a toothed belt pulley is installed in its drive train. Should anything accidentally get into the mechanics, the clutch separates the driving and driven elements within milliseconds – then everything comes to a standstill.

Arved Fuchs would surely have wished for such a feature for the real Drake Passage! But either way, he was overjoyed when the wait for the new Patagonia and Antarctica sections was finally over. His verdict as an expert, “I think this has turned out to be a splendidly successful portrayal – really great, congratulations!”

Ein einzigartiges Erlebnis – mit Sicherheit

Das Event hatte eine ähnlich lange Vorbereitungszeit wie eine Polarexpedition: Am 3. Mai 2023 eröffneten Frederik und Gerrit Braun, Gründer des Miniatur Wunderlands Hamburg, feierlich die neuen Patagonien- und Antarktis-Bauabschnitte dieser einzigartigen Attraktion in der Hamburger Speicherstadt. Vier Jahre Arbeit auf zwei Kontinenten und rund 2 Millionen Euro wurden eingesetzt, um diesen besonderen Moment zu ermöglichen. Frederik Braun hat Patagonien selbst schon bereist – und erzählt begeistert, er habe seitdem immer davon geträumt, die Region irgendwann für das Wunderland nachzubauen: „Nun ist es Wirklichkeit und das fast Unmögliche ist geglückt. Eines der eindrucksvollsten Highlights ist die aufwendige Nachbildung des Naturspektakels DrakePassage: Hier braut sich regelmäßig ein schwerer Sturm zusammen, Schiffe schaukeln in immer höherem Wellengang, während Videoprojektionen und Soundeffekte die lebendige Wirkung der gefürchteten Meeresenge unterstützen.

Um dieses Szenario so realistisch wie möglich umzusetzen, arbeitete das Wunderland-Team mit der Modellbauer-Familie Martinez aus Buenos Aires zusammen. Für die glaubhafte dreidimensionale Simulation der Wellenbewegungen der rauen Drake-Passage entwickelten die leidenschaftlichen Tüftler vollkommen neue Techniken: Eine komplexe Mechanik bringt Reihen von

miteinander verbundenen Hebeln so in Bewegung, dass auf der mit Stoff überspannten Oberfläche der Anlage äußerst natürlich wirkende Wellen entstehen. Die Grundidee dafür wurde von der Mechanik eines Konzertflügels inspiriert, an die das nackte „Wellengerät“ auch tatsächlich erinnert.

Ihr komplexer Aufbau und ihre erstaunliche Wirkung geben der Drake-Passage eine Sonderstellung im Miniatur Wunderland Hamburg.

Keine andere Mechanik hier enthält so viele Bauteile. Um den Betrieb so sicher wie möglich zu machen, ist in ihrem Antriebsstrang eine Sicherheitskupplung vom Typ SYNTEX mit Zahnriemenscheibe verbaut. Falls irgendetwas in die Mechanik gerät, trennt die Kupplung in Millisekunden An- und Abtrieb voneinander – und alles steht still.

It has left its mark on pedestrian paths, pavements and parking lots in German towns since the 1960s and, in contrast to individually shaped cobblestones which have to be laid by hand, the ‘bone’ is easy to lay – especially with the Probst VM-X-PAVERMAX – as each stone interlocks with the next. The paver laying machine is a real all-rounder.

Using the attached HVZ installation clamp, it picks up and lays a wide variety of paving stones and up to 25 interlocking shapes, resulting in a surface that is easy to walk on and drive over. These little powerhouses can lift up to 700 kilograms and are extremely stable both when starting up and when driven. They master

turning manoeuvres in confined spaces and are also very quiet which is indispensable for use on inner-city construction sites.

Laying with the VM-X-PAVERMAX has nothing in common with physically strenuous manual laying. This is the result of Probst’s development engineers’ focus on ergonomics and ease of use. As Marius Kaltenbach, Team Leader Laying Technology at Probst comments, “Thanks to simple handling with a foot pedal and joystick, even inexperienced drivers can operate the equipment. This is especially helpful when renting out the machines, as not every customer has access to professional drivers”. The premium version VM-X-PAVERMAX also offers a range of automatic programmes that greatly simplify the laying process. Furthermore it comes with a communications skill

set, informing the driver in real time about all relevant vehicle data – and in any one of five languages. Drivers of these paver laying machines also enjoy numerous comfort functions, enabling them to complete large projects in a focused manner and without tiring.

To facilitate problem-free operation of the paver laying machine all year round, a KTR MMC combined cooler is used to regulate the temperature of the cooling water and hydraulic oil in the engine compartment. The cooler was specifically configured to meet the machinery’s requirements, because it makes quite a difference whether it is used in freezing cold or sweltering heat conditions. As a result the engine is always at the correct temperature, regardless of the season and the application involved.

Verbundpflaster – sicher und bequem verlegt

Jeder hat ihn vor Augen: den Knochen. Dieser Verbundpflasterstein erhielt seinen Namen aufgrund der speziellen Form. Seit den 60er-Jahren prägt er das deutsche Stadtbild auf Fußgängerwegen und Parkplätzen. Im Gegensatz zu Kopfsteinpflaster, bei dem jeder Stein wegen seiner individuellen Form von Hand verlegt werden muss, ist der Knochen dank seiner Verzahnung einfach zu verlegen – vor allem für die VM-XPAVERMAX von Probst. Die Verlegemaschine ist ein Tausendsassa: Mit der angebauten Verlegezange HVZ greift und verlegt sie verschiedenste Pflastersteinvarianten und bis zu 25 Verbundsteinformen und schafft damit einen gut begeh- und befahrbaren Boden. Bis zu 700 Kilogramm können die kleinen Kraftpakete heben, dabei sind sie extrem standsicher beim Anfahren und Fahren

sowie bei Wendungen auf engstem Raum und zudem sehr geräuscharm – unverzichtbar beim Einsatz auf innerstädtischen Baustellen.

Mit dem körperlich anstrengenden Verlegen von Hand hat die Arbeit mit der VM-X-PAVERMAX nichts gemein. Vielmehr haben die Entwickler von Probst auf beste Ergonomie und einfache Handhabung geachtet. „Dank der einfachen Bedienbarkeit mit Fußpedal- und Joysticksteuerung können auch ungeübte Fahrer die Geräte bedienen“, sagt Marius Kaltenbach, Teamleiter Verlegetechnik bei Probst. „Gerade beim Verleihen der Geräte ist das hilfreich, da nicht jeder Kunde mit professionellen Fahrern aufwarten kann.“ Die Premiumvariante der VM-X-PAVERMAX bietet zudem verschiedene Automatikprogramme, die den Verlegevorgang wesentlich vereinfachen. Zudem ist sie als echtes Sprachtalent

konzipiert: Sie informiert den Fahrer in Echtzeit über alle relevanten Fahrzeugdaten – und das in fünf Sprachen. Um große Verlegeprojekte ermüdungsfrei und konzentriert erledigen zu können, genießen die Fahrer der Verlegemaschine zudem zahlreiche Komfort-Features.

Damit die Verlegemaschine ganzjährig reibungslos betrieben werden kann, übernimmt im Motorraum ein MMC-Kombikühler von KTR das Temperaturmanagement von Motorkühlwasser und Hydrauliköl. Der Kühler wurde speziell auf die Anforderungen der Maschine ausgelegt, denn ob das Gerät in eisiger Kälte oder glühender Hitze zum Einsatz kommt, macht einen Unterschied.

So ist der Motor unabhängig von Jahreszeit und Einsatzgebiet immer richtig temperiert.

The MONITEX BT is a ROTEX-GS coupling hub with an integrated measuring system that measures torque and speed. The measured data is shown on the coupling via a display and can be received and saved by a mobile device or a PC via the free MONITEX app.
