Wyre celebrates award winning parks

W

yre is celebrating receiving four Green Flags for parks across the borough, after Keep Britain Tidy unveiled this year’s recipients of their prestigious awards.

Poulton’s Vicarage Park, Hawthorne Park in Thornton, Wyre Estuary Country Park in Stanah and Fleetwood’s Memorial Park have all received the award for another year.

Jenifer Phillips, Chair of Hawthorne Park Trust, commented: “Over the last ten years we’ve transformed Hawthorne Park from a field with an unloved play area into a real family park with a lovely, old fashioned enjoyable feel.”

This international award is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible environmental standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent visitor facilities.

Fleetwood’s Grade II listed Memorial Park has also been awarded a Green Heritage Site accreditation once again, in recognition of its historical importance and high standards of care and upkeep.

Councillor David Henderson, Street Scene, Parks and Open Spaces Portfolio Holder at Wyre Council, said: “Gaining a Green Flag in the first instance is no easy achievement. Keeping it is just as difficult and could not be done without the dedication and hard work of the parks staff and volunteers.”

Les Fletcher, Chair of the Friends of Memorial Park, said: “These awards are a tribute to all the volunteers who help to keep Memorial Park looking lovely.”

Over 40 parks volunteers and members of Friends groups celebrated at a special event with the Mayor of Wyre, Councillor Alice Collinson, held at the Civic Centre in Poulton.

Jean Stansfield/Vicarage Park held its fifth annual Our Big Gig last weekend with around 3,000 people enjoying live music and fundraising at the event.

Steph Hasty, Chair of the Friends of Jean Stansfield/ Vicarage Park, said: “We are so proud to be part of achieving the Green Flag Award. To the group it means that we must be doing something right. We 34

The announcement of this year’s award winners comes in the same week that thousands of people up and down the country are enjoying Love Parks Week (14 to 23 July), an annual celebration of the country’s fantastic green spaces and the community groups that bring them to life.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------NORCROSS TENNIS CLUB The club is situated on Anchorsholme Lane East, off Fleetwood Rd South, Thornton, FY5 3DA within the HASSRA Sportsground. (Between the Norcross roundabout and Four Lane Ends).

Annual membership is only £50 for adults which covers a parent and all accompanied children under 16.

This will be an ideal opportunity to get the kids active during school holidays but they must be supervised. Junior unsupervised membership, to age 18 is only £10 if the parent/guardian is a member.

There are 3 tennis courts with floodlights and play takes place

all year round depending on the weather. There is also a clubhouse in which to keep warm between play.

There are regular club sessions most weekday afternoons. Age is no barrier to these sessions as youngsters in their 60’s will be made welcome. If you have not played for a while and feel you need some exercise come along and you may surprise yourself.

There will be Open Days where we encourage members to join in and bring friends along. We are hoping to have enough interested to have club sessions on at least one evening a week.

We also have a men’s team playing in the local league.

Coaching is available depending on the needs of the individual but if enough are interested a 6 week beginners course could be held.
