Schoolchildren bury treasure beneath new sea defences
A
time capsule has been buried underneath the new sea defences at Rossall.
Pupils from Northfold Primary School in Thornton Cleveleys were inspired to fill the capsule following a trip to see the defences being built, leaving a lasting legacy for a future generation to discover. Wyre Council is replacing two kilometres of defences from Rossall Hospital to Rossall Point in a £63m coastal defence scheme that will protect 7,500 properties from the risk of flooding. The capsule was buried below what will be the new promenade, which is due to be completed in November 2017. Councilor Roger Berry, Cabinet member with responsibility for sea defences at Wyre Council, said: “The new seawall is vital for the protection of our residents in Fleetwood and their homes and businesses. From the outset they have supported the scheme, contributed to its funding and played their part in designing its features. “It is therefore appropriate that our younger generation are placing a time capsule underneath the wall to record our lives as this seawall is built to protect future generations.” Items inside the time capsule include photos and mementos, such as newspapers and currency, to illustrate daily life now alongside facts about the children and messages to the future. Through our work with the school the children have been able to learn about the role of sea defences in protecting homes and businesses across Lancashire. “We hope they will be able to share their experience with their families, and that some of these budding engineers will be inspired to follow a career in engineering.” Air and water-tight, the time capsule is expected to remain buried for at least a hundred years, the lifespan of the new sea defences. 325,000 tonnes of rock armour are being used to create the base of the defences, to weather the harsh conditions on this exposed part of the coastline and allow the beach to build up in the area. Between the rock revetment and the promenade, specially manufactured precast concrete is being used to form a stepped revetment to break the waves. The promenade will look similar in design to Cleveleys.
James Rochester, Class 6 teacher at Northfold Primary School, said: “Class 6 have been learning about how coastlines change over time, so visiting Rossall provided amazing first hand insight and the chance to observe the defences gradually taking shape was fascinating.
To date around 166,000 tonnes of rock have been placed in both the lower revetment and groynes. 1,676 linear metres of steel piles have been installed, over 700 precast concrete units including access steps, wave walls, rear walls and revetment units are in place and 241,000 tonnes of rock have been imported.
