Let the kids go wild Adam Frost has already urged people to think about wildlife at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show, but the gold medalwinning garden designer isn’t done with his campaigning yet.

He is now urging parents to get their children into the great outdoors this summer and help reverse the decline of British wildlife.

The State of Nature report, carried out by a coalition of conservation organisations, recently revealed that 60% of British wildlife is in decline, while at the same time, a further research found two thirds of British school children want to be taught more about gardening and to engage with the outdoors.

“I’ve spent lots of time with my children both in my own garden and in the wider countryside. We do things together like going on country walks, growing and picking fruit and bird spotting - the list is endless.”

Encouraged by these thoughts, Frost came up with a plan for parents on how to bring their children into the garden and to attract wildlife at the same time.

 Create a planting plan

Mix together plants that are both beneficial to people and wildlife, such as fruits, vegetables and herbs, with shrubs and perennial herbaceous plants, to create an area where there is produce for humans and wildlife. Recommended plants that attract wildlife include sunflowers, wild strawberries, thyme, herbs and firethorn shrubs which offer nectar and berries to a range of wildlife.

 Grow a selection of salad crops This requires regular attention and will give children something to focus on right up until they eat them.

Seeds should be watered every evening and given plant food once a week. Lettuce and other salad leaves can be sown in spring and summer.

 Go seed collecting Look closely for plants in your borders where flower heads have fallen off and seeds are growing. If the seeds are brown, get the children to help you pick them and put them in a warm place to dry out ready to plant for next spring.

 Create a compost heap This is a great way of encouraging kids to recycle garden waste and also helps them understand the natural cycle of growth and decay.

Create three tightly fixed walls in your chosen area and begin filling it with organic materials such as grass clippings, weeks, straw, manure, shredded newspaper, kitchen waste, plant cuttings and soft prunings.

 Take games outdoors Go on a treasure hunt or play hide-and-seek to encourage children to explore the garden and stimulate their curiosity about the outdoors. If you have daisies in the garden, teach them to make daisy chains.

 Set up bird feeding and cleaning stations Birds come to gardens to feed, breed, nest and rest. To make sure your garden is accommodating, introduce a bird house, feeding station or a bird bath - all of these are a must for budding young bird watchers. The water in a bird bath needs to be at least 2.5cm deep and should be placed in the open away from areas where cats may hide.

 Store logs Plenty of wildlife makes its home in dead wood, and other animals use it as a source of food. Children can help make this into a proper wildlife shelter in a small, shady spot so that it remains cool and damp.

If moving wood, check beforehand that nothing has already made itself at home.

 Make an insect box or ladybird house Use spare or dead wood to create a small space to attract spiders, bees, lacewings and ladybirds, where they can seek refuge from predators and from the cold. Screw together four lengths of wood and fill it with hollow canes. Place the box in a sheltered area and on the fence so the insects can find it.

Good financial news as Wyre approves accounts Wyre Council is proving that you can balance the books in these austere times.

Members of the Audit Committee, at their meeting 24 June, were asked to approve council’s accounts for the year ended 31 March 2014. And in amongst the 110 pages for consideration by the committee there are some really good news stories.

There have been savings against budgets or additional income totalling £652,000 which will be used to meet on-going maintenance requirements. The council has lots of assets including operational buildings, leisure centres, Fleetwood Market, the foreshore/promenade, playground equipment, seats, shelters, paths and car parks, all of which are costly to maintain and it has been recognised that some of them are looking a bit worse for wear and in need of a bit of TLC. Real term savings in employee costs since 2005/06 total £3.6m - a 30% reduction – and staff mileage expenses have reduced by 60% over six years. For the first time ever, the cemeteries service has broken even, generating a small surplus of £7,000. Not too long ago this service cost the council tax payers in excess of £86,000.

The Marine Hall has managed to reduce its operating costs by an incredible 58% since 2007/08 with the venue costing the taxpayer only £200,000 to run in 2013/14 - a big thank you to all those who have supported us in achieving this by attending a huge variety of events and concerts. The cost of insurance has reduced by 37% over a six year period due to a robust approach to managing claims and improved intelligence on fraudulent activities.

While the council maintains what looks like a healthy level of money in the bank, the latest 48

financial projections show this money is needed in future years as significant reductions in government funding kick in. The Senior Leadership Team, which has managed to find savings of £786,000 to date, has been asked to find even more to help bridge the gap between income and expenditure.

Earmarked reserves also look healthy, but much of this money is already committed to schemes, with examples including the leisure centre improvement works currently under way, Shaping Your Neighbourhood grant funding now in its second year, replacement of council vehicles or simply meeting the cost of the council tax freeze – the money the council receives from tax payers has been frozen at the rate set in 2010/11.

Sea defences saw investment of £1.3m as the massive £63.2m Rossall Sea Wall improvement scheme got under way. The next biggest item was disabled facilities grants with just under half of the money going to residents in Fleetwood and a quarter to those living in Thornton and Cleveleys. Encouragingly, almost 70% of the capital investment in 2013/14 was met by grants and contributions meaning that the impact on our taxpayers is minimised.

Cllr Balmain, Chairman of the Audit Committee, said ‘Being a Scotsman I have a reputation for being careful with money, but when we’re talking about hard earned money paid by our residents then it is even more important than ever to make sure that we spend it carefully and wisely. I wish to place on record my thanks to all those who have helped secure our financial position including members and officers. They have the most glorious, heady scent in summer along with beautiful blooms in shades from white and pink to gold and coppery amber. There are so many varieties, whether you want compact and colourful or tall and exotic ones. Some varieties are perfect for summer pots, such as the Asiatic and oriental hybrids with short stout stems and fresh green foliage. Try Lilium ‘Mona Lisa’, a highly scented type reaching 40cm in height, with open blooms or pink and white flushed deep pink towards the centre.

Lilies are just as happy in the flower border, filling in the gaps where others have run out of steam in mid-summer. Trumpet lilies such as the white Lilium regale look fabulous in the border, while L. Pink Perfection Group can reach 1.5m in height and their dusky pink petals look amazing grown next to the purple foliage of Prunus cerasifera ‘Nigra’. The coppery amber tones of the African Queen Group flower later and work well with some of the hotter colours of crocosmias in late summer. In borders, plant bulbs 15-20cm apart in early spring, burying them at least three times their depth and laying the bulbs on theirsides when planting to prevent water from becoming trapped between the fleshy scales, which can rot the bulb. Plant them in a sunny spot and you should have wonderful results. When blooms have faded, cut off the flower heads but leave the stems and keep watering and feeding to promote the bulbs’ strength for next year.

Good enough to eat...

Perfect Peaches

You don’t have to live in a Mediterranean to enjoy mouthwatering peaches in summer.

However, peaches do need a lot of care in our climate. They can be grown in warm areas with the protection of a fairly high south-facing wall or fence but the flowers come early and the fruits need a lot of time to ripen. It’s therefore probably best to start them off in a greenhouse and keep them there at flowering time to protect them from frost.

The trees need deep, well drained but moistureretentive slightly acid soil, with plenty of organic matter added. They should be planted in autumn and respond well to fan training.

They are self-pollinating so you can grow single trees, but, as they blossom before many insects appear, it’s wise to hand pollinate them as well.

The easiest cultivars to grow in pots are compact or ‘patio’ cultivars, standard trees on high stems with a ball-like head.

In late winter peach trees need to be sheltered to keep the rain off and stop peach leaf curl developing.

Keep soil moisture levels constant, as dry soil can encourage bolting, particularly with cauliflower, rocket and spinach.

Raise early crops of onions and beetroot in modules in a greenhouse and plant out when temperatures are warmer. Choose cultivars less likely to bolt, such as ‘Boltardy’ beetroot.

Sweet Eve Strawberry Meringue Roulade with Mascarpone Serves 8 Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking time: 16 minutes Ingredients: Vegetable oil for brushing the tin Whites of 6 eggs 300g caster sugar 80g flaked almonds 400g mascarpone cream cheese 1tbsp heaped icing sugar 300g Sweet Eve strawberries Method: Preheat the oven to 200째C and place the oven rack quite near the top. Line a standard Swiss roll baking tin, or a shallow baking tray with baking parchment and brush with vegetable oil.

In a big, clean bowl, whisk the egg whites till they are quite stiff. Add the caster sugar slowly. Continue whisking until the meringue mixture is stiff and shiny, forming peaks.

Spread the meringue mixture in the Swiss roll tin and sprinkle the flaked almonds on top, evenly. Place in the oven and bake the meringue for 8 minutes. After 8 minutes lower the oven temperature to 160째C and bake the meringue until golden brown, which will take approximately another 8 minutes.

When the meringue is golden brown, remove from the oven and turn it almond-side down on a big, clean sheet of baking 52

parchment. Peel off the paper from the base and leave the meringue to cool completely.

Whisk the mascarpone cream cheese and the icing sugar till stiff. Spread the mascarpone cream and three quarters of the Sweet Eve strawberries, sliced in halves lengthways, evenly over the cold meringue. Use the

sides of the parchment paper to roll the meringue roulade onto a serving tray or platter. Keep the meringue roulade in the fridge until you are ready to serve it.

Decorate the top with the remaining Sweet Eve strawberries and serve. www.sweetevestrawberry.co.uk

FOOD Sweet Eve Strawberry Cream Victoria Sponge Cake Serves 4 Named after Queen Victoria herself, there are few cakes that can beat this all-time classic recipe.

You can spread strawberry jam (turning it into a jam sponge) or whipped vanilla cream on the base of one sponge cake as a filling, or both.

Preparation time: 20 minutes Baking time: 20 minutes ingredients: 175g butter, soft 175g caster sugar 3 fresh eggs 175g self-raising flour 250ml double cream 1 tsp vanilla bean paste, or vanilla extract 1 tbsp icing sugar and extra for sifting 400g Sweet Eve Strawberries 4 tbsp strawberry jam (optional) Method: Pre-heat the oven to 180째C. Butter and line two 18 cm sandwich tins with baking parchment. Beat the butter and the sugar till pale and fluffy. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well. Fold in the flour, one spoon at a time.

Divide the mixture evenly between the tins and level with a knife. Bake in the oven for 20 minutes until the sponge cakes are well risen, golden brown and firm to the touch. Cool the sponge cakes on a wire rack. Hull the strawberries and

slice them in half. Whip the cream till quite stiff, mix in the icing sugar and the vanilla.

When the cakes are cool, spread the jam on one of the sponge cakes (if using) and spread half of the whipped cream on top. Place half of the strawberries on top of the cream. Place the other sponge cake on top and spread with the remaining whipped cream. Arrange the remaining strawberries in a spiral round the cake.

Sweet Eve Strawberry, Prosecco, Campari, Elderflower Cocktail Serves 6 people Preparation time: 10 mins ingredients: 300g Sweet Eve strawberries 6 sugar cubes (optional) 3 shots of elderflower cordial 3 shots of Campari 1 bottle of Prosecco

Method: Take 6 large champagne flutes and chill in the refrigerator. Hull all the strawberries and chop and blend half of them. Strain the strawberry puree into a jug through a sieve, to eliminate the seeds. When you are ready to serve the cocktail place a cube of sugar at the bottom of each glass, (if you prefer your cocktails less sweet then you can leave the sugar out). Pour half a shot of elderflower into each glass, followed by half a shot of Campari and half a shot of strained strawberry puree. Open the Prosecco bottle and top each flute with fizzy wine. Mix with a cocktail stirrer and serve with the remaining Sweet Eve strawberries.

August Live Weekender The Blue Room in Blackpool has a jam packed treat for live music lovers this bank holiday weekend The Blue Room on Church Street in Blackpol will be hosting an epic weekend of live music this August bank holiday weekend. Over twenty bands on two stages in one venue. The venue which recently opened under new management has heeded to demand and reinstated the indoor festival theme that was always a massive success to the venues previous organisers. The weekender takes place on Friday 22nd, Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th August.

The first confirmed band are Blackpool based ‘post-rock’ band ‘Goonies Never Say Die’ who will be returning to the live scene after nearly two years on hiatus. They are performing as a warm up to their appearance at ArcTanGent Festival at Fernhill Farm in Bristol on Saturday 30th August, where they will play alongside artists such as And So I Watch You From Afar, Russian Circles, Jamie Lenman, Mono, Baby Godzilla and more.

Diary of a local Councillor Paul Galley is a Councillor for Anchorsholme in Blackpool and each month he writes a weekly diary of what he has been up to.

Saturday: Today was the start of a very busy

weekend. I helped out at the Sevenoaks Over 50’s Club summer fair and was in the kitchen making tea’s and coffees for everyone attending. The club is a brilliant place for anyone over 50 to go to during the week as they hold three sessions there of bingo and other games as well as planning days out and holidays. Sunday: Today was a really rewarding day for me. I helped a friend of mine from Anchorsholme Methodists Church to put together a bid for funding for Anchorsholme Brownies, they do so much great work and it was a pleasure to help with the bid. If successful it will mean Anchorsholme Brownies will be able to take the children on lots of different trips.

Monday: We had a brilliant evening as we were able to secure funding for two very important projects that will greatly enrich Anchorsholme, we secured the funding for the Brownies and we also secured funding to help the children through out the area get involved in organised sport by having Blackpool Football Club agree to do evening coaching in Eastpines Park as part of our wider strategy to deal with anti social behaviour in the Park.

Tuesday: I met up with United Utilities and they

confirmed that construction of the new 30 metre deep storage tank in Anchorsholme Park and other works they plan to do will begin in September this year. It’s essential we keep on top of them and are working really hard now to agree the planning and funding from them for the new Anchorsholme Park once the work is completed.

Wednesday: I called the bingo this morning

which was great fun and best of all I met up with Community reps from Blackpool Football Club in Eastpines Park with Cllr Tony Williams and a member of the team from Blackpool Council, it was one of those real can do meetings where you get more done in five minutes than you can at some meetings that go on for hours. I’m so proud to say that we have agreed that from every Wednesday and Friday evening in Eastpines Park from 6pm to 9pm we will have free organised football coaching for all the children and young adults. It’s a year long

programme that if is a success we will continue to organise the funding for future years. The best thing is because of the Blackpool Football Club connection the children will be encouraged to do coaching courses and refereeing courses and visit Bloomfield Road, that sort of thing so it’s organised, marshalled so everyone will be welcomed where ever you live and most of all it’s free so if your children or grandchildren can come along please do encourage them, they will be made to feel very welcome. This is a gigantic step forwards and now we have made it happen we have to make it work, so please do promote it to anyone who has children / teenagers.

Thursday: As you may be aware a few months ago

we launched our first public defibrillator in Blackpool at Anchorsholme Library and today I had alot of fun working with a good friend of mine who is a paramedic and lives in Anchorsholme on plans for our second public defibrillator which if all goes to plan will be on the Sevenoaks community centre building just off Sevenoaks Drive. We have five defibrillators in total coming for Anchorsholme and our ultimate plan is that every house in Anchorsholme will be within the four minute range of a defibrillator.

I should have news when the second defibrillator will be installed but I would say it will be around autumn time of this year.

Friday: Today was a really busy day for my recruitment business so I was in all day. In the evening, my girlfriend and I took a walk out to see what work has been going on with regards to our promenade work with construction in full swing with our new promenade. There isn’t always much to see as I believe a lot of the work at this stage is covered by sand after the workers have finished to protect it from the sea. I’m so excited about the new promenade for me it’s Anchorsholme’s horizontal Blackpool Tower in terms of what it will ultimately do for Anchorsholme, it really will put us on the map.

As you can tell I’m really enjoying myself watching it all come together.

Coach Roger Garlick 07545891925 WYRE ARCHAEOLOGY Wyre Archaeology (WAG) offers a rare opportunity for anyone with an interest in the history of the Fylde Coast and North Preston areas to get hands on experience of practical archaeology through our regular programme of excavations and other activities.

Our 2013 BIG DIG found evidence of Iron Age, Roman and Early Mediaeval presence in the Thornton area and we’ll be following up these tantalising leads in future digs. In the 2014 season we also plan to investigate the elusive ‘Danes Pad’ and if you have an idea for a dig just get in touch. WAG is open to people of all ages and has previously provided practical experience for students going on to study for degrees in Archaeology. We’re keen to have new digging members but you’d be welcome whatever skill you might be able to bring at whatever level. We’re fully insured and we provide basic training and equipment.

We’re affiliated to the Council for British Archaeology and have strong links with local professionals in the field. We meet at Farmer Parr’s in Thornton on the 3rd Wednesday of each month, starting at 7.00pm, to keep everyone informed of activities and there are occasional guest speakers.
