Crossleys kicks off New Year with new expansion Accident repair centre Crossleys Garage is opening a new bodyshop in Fylde near Blackpool, They are expanding their business from a 15 to 50 car operation across 12,500 sq ft to provide insurers, work providers, trade and retail customers with a onestop service including accident repair, alloy wheel and Smart repair, tyres and servicing. As part of the expansion plans, Crossleys are also anticipating being able to create several new employment opportunities and are investing in a new health & safety system to address all their legal obligations proactively without impacting on business.

ree microchipping at the Knott End Pet Shop on Monday 11th May. We are doing free micro-chipping from 10am to 3pm at The Knott End Pet Shop, Knott End, FY6 0AU. Pets must be over 12 weeks old, all cats, rabbits and ferrets must be in a secure carrier and dogs must be on lead at all times as the event can become very busy. The branch will be fundraising at the following Pets at Home stores throughout the weekend of Friday 29th May - Sunday 31st May (times will be confirmed at a later date). We will also be doing an ‘every penny counts’ campaign, Tesco store collections, a mini fun dog show on Saturday 6th June and a charity event night on Sunday 7th June at Fossels Showbar, Blackpool. More details can be found on our website. Special Appeal: ‘Gorgeous George’. George was removed from a house by an RSPCA Inspector after his owner wasn’t caring for him properly. Due to him being neglected and living in poor conditions, George developed a severe skin allergy which was left untreated. George has been at the centre since October receiving treatment for his skin and is now finally on the mend and on the lookout for a new loving home. As his skin condition was so severe, there is a chance that it may flare up again. If this was to happen, the animal centre would pay for any medication required. The centre will also provide George with monthly flea treatments which will help towards
George controlling his skin condition. George is a friendly boy who loves human company and attention, he is suitable to live with another cat and older children and he must remain on a hypoallergenic diet and not be given any treats. If you believe you can offer this gorgeous boy the home he greatly deserves or have any questions then please contact the animal centre. Volunteer Gardener Needed: The Animal Centre requires volunteers with some knowledge and experience of gardening to help maintain the outdoor areas and help create the community garden that we are in the process of establishing at the centre. This is a fantastic opportunity for those who are green fingered and even more so now with Summer fast approaching. If you can spare a few hours a week we would be very grateful of your help, please call in at the centre or ring up for further details. Poulton schoolchildren are green travel champions Children from St John’s Catholic Primary School are leading the way in improving air quality in Poulton
W
yre Council began working with schools to develop sustainable travel champions in 2013, as part of a drive to improve air quality and tackle traffic congestion within Poulton’s busy road network. Pupils at St. John’s Catholic Primary School, St. Chad’s C of E Primary School, Carr Head Primary School and The Breck Primary School all attempted to reduce the number of car journeys their parents made to school by walking, cycling and car sharing instead. Collectively there was a significant impact on car journeys last year, however St. John’s excelled with over 40 pupils walking every day and 38% of parents using their cars less as a result of the initiative. The whole school has embraced the philosophy of walking to school, recognising not only the environmental impact but also the benefits to health and wellbeing. To say thank you for their efforts, Wyre Council has donated 80 high visibility vests to the school, emblazoned with ‘Walking in Wyre’ and ‘Improving Air Quality’, to help spread the message and keep the children safe as they walk to and from school.
“Air quality is important particularly in Poulton town centre with its narrow streets. Lancashire women urged to get pretty muddy Lancashire women are being urged to fight dirty when it comes to conquering cancer - by signing up now for an exciting new event from Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life
P
reston has been chosen to host the only Race for Life Pretty Muddy event taking place in the county this summer.
Pretty Muddy is a women-only, non-competitive 5k obstacle course – with added mud. It will take place for the first time in the city at Preston’s Moor Park on Saturday, July 18. Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life family of events also includes the 5k and 10k courses, which thousands of women will take on at the same venue on Sunday, May 24 to raise money for life-saving research. It’s the perfect challenge for those looking to shake off the January blues and commit to get more active in 2015. Every hour, more than four people are diagnosed with cancer in North West. And that’s why Cancer Research UK is calling on Lancashire women to fight back against this devastating disease by choosing their challenge - Pretty Muddy, 5k or 10k - and signing up now. Laura Taylor, Cancer Research UK’s North West Event Manager, said: ‘We’re so excited about launching Race for Life Pretty Muddy in Preston. The event is taking place in the city for the first time and we’re calling on local ladies to sign up now. We’ve no doubt that they’ve got the fighting spirit to get down and dirty in the bid to beat cancer sooner. Community funding on offer in Wyre A share of £60,000 is on offer to people in Wyre who want to make a difference in their communities.
W
yre Council’s Shaping Your Neighbourhood initiative has been extended for a third year and bids are now being accepted for community projects that will improve enterprise, health or engagement in the borough. The council is looking for creative ideas that will make a real long term difference to local people. It could be something simple like provision of equipment to enhance towns and villages, improvements to existing services or facilities that will encourage more people to use them or new ways to reach people and bring communities together. Shaping Your Neighbourhood was launched in 2012 to allow people to get involved in improving their neighbourhoods and over £450,000 in grants has already been awarded across Wyre. Funding has gone towards an assortment of projects including dementia and bereavement support programmes, sport and play equipment and refurbishment of community buildings. The Willow Garden Project in Fleetwood, a charity that supports adults with disabilities and mental health problems, received a grant of £3,000 to build an observatory in its sensory garden. Pamela Laird from the project commented: ‘The observatory compliments the garden perfectly and I know that it will be very much appreciated by our service users 48
and the local community. The support we received through Shaping Your Neighbourhood has been brilliant and the links we have established will no doubt help to spread the word to the local community to explain what the Willow Garden Project is all about. Thank you so much for supporting us.’ Jane Littlewood from visitcleveleys.co.uk secured £5,000 towards restoring a seaside clock shelter in Cleveleys. She said: ‘If you don’t like something in your local community, you really do have the power to do something about it, and a Shaping Your Neighbourhood grant might help you to pay for it. If you’ve not been involved with anything like this before you need to be clear about what you want to achieve, how you will do it and how much it will cost before you apply but from there it’s simple and officers at Wyre will help you. I was astonished at the community support and pride that the project created.’ Wyre is split into six neighbourhood areas: Cleveleys, Thornton, Fleetwood, Poulton, Rural East (Garstang and surrounding villages) and Rural West (Over Wyre and Great Eccleston). ay 7th is voting day throughout Wyre and the UK. People will exercise their democratic right and elect both MP’s and local councillors. 70 years ago almost to the day (8th May 1945). Democracy and freedoms we take for granted were preserved when the Second World War (1939-1945) came to an end in Europe. V E Day. The war in Japan/ Asia would continue for another 4 months. The Teanlowe 60+ Community Centre, Queensway, Poulton-LeFylde will be remembering and acknowledging the great debt we owe to this wonderful generation. The right to vote, freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom to write your views. What it means to live in a free society. At the Centre we have our own local heroes. Charles Green airforce gunner and part of Bomber Command. Charles was awarded the DFC (Distinguished Flying Cross) for “an act or acts of valour, courage or devotion to duty whilst flying in active operations against the enemy”. John Bathe Merchant Seaman took part in the Atlantic Convoys. Stanley Bousfield was part of the D-Day landings serving in the Royal Navy. Cath Whiting nursed wounded soldiers in Cumbria, including those evacuated from Dunkirk. Paula Ross made parts for aircraft in Lancaster. Ada Doddon made uniforms for the armed forces, Devonshire Road, Blackpool. Elsie Reid had four cousins who were killed in action. Two cousins were awarded the Canadian Silver Cross. Many centre users were at school throughout the war, including Margaret Walsh (Sheaf Street C of E Poulton). Volunteers and committee members Stan and June Cooper were at school in Staffordshire. Ethel Brookes Chairperson at the Centre never knew her father who was killed in action. In the past 12 months the Centre has lost 3 more Old Soldiers, Joe Singleton, Peter Webster and Alan Whittaker.
The Teanlowe 60+ Community Centre mirrors the courage, bravery and determination of this special generation. WYRE SHOULD BE PROUD TO HAVE THESE PEOPLE AMOUNG US. Pupils from St Johns RC Primary School, Breck Road, Poulton will be visiting the Centre to find out first hand what it was like to live through the war. The Centre Committee are pleased that todays youngsters are keen to listen and learn from this generation. The Centre will be decorated in bunting over the V E Weekend. 8th May will see no charge for refreshments, while music from the 1940’s will be played. Monday 11th May will see regular centre users sit down to hot pot and apple pie. They voted against spam sandwiches and jelly! Ethel Brookes Centre Chairperson stated “The Centre is very much at the heart of the Community”. Hodgson High School, Baines 6th form, St Chads, St Johns, English Martyrs, St Martin, St Hildas, Poulton Methodist Churches, Glasdon UK, all offer either practical or financial support to the Centre. In addition we have hundreds of well wishers and supporters. Over 50 posters advertising the Centre are on display throughout Wyre. Over 1500 people have signed a petition against possible closure bye Wyre Borough Council. The Cente we believe saves the g o v e r n m e n t / N H S / L a n c a s h i re and Wyre Councils £150,000 per annum. The Centre is providing much needed SOCIAL CARE AND INTERACTION which is helping to keep Wyre people Healthy, Happy and Independent. Wyre has the largest elderly population in Lancashire and one of the highest in the UK. Provision of social care in Wyre is very limited. Age UK Lancashire recognise the importance of the Centre and the good it does. Indeed Age UK Lancashire have over the past six months provided an exceptional
level of support & advice. Anne Oliver Age UK Lancashire Coordinator has been a tower of strength. Stephanie Tufft, Chief Executive Age UK Lancashire has told the Centre that they are 100 per cent behind us. This Centre was built in 1974 for the elderly of Poulton and District. ( All Wyre people can now use the Centre) at no cost to the Council. The building has only ever been used by the elderly and local community. The Centre Committee and Trustees are presently in discussions with Wyre Council over ownership and use of the building. If it is found that Wyre Council owns the building the Centre would probably look to rent from the Council. Wyre Council are keen to extract revenue from buildings they own. In July 2014 Wyre Council gave notice of eviction and advertised the building for rent. The Council withdrew this notice in October 2014 after strong objections from the local community, supported by Age UK Lancashire. The Council stated they would wait a further 12 months before making a decision. Philip Howarth a Centre Volunteer for 8 years and now a committee member stated “I have spoken to hundreds of people throughout Wyre about the Centre and not one person understands why Wyre Council proposed closure of the Centre. At Knott End Golf Club where I am a member, around Fleetwood where my wife of 30 years was born, in Carleton where I have lived for 24 years. Carleton Bowling Club and the Thatched House Pub, Poulton. In all of these places everyone wants the Centre to continue and prosper”. Just turn up, or contact Simon on 07966 231 211 WYRE ARCHAEOLOGY Wyre Archaeology (WAG) offers a rare opportunity for anyone with an interest in the history of the Fylde Coast and North Preston areas to get hands on experience of practical archaeology through our regular programme of excavations and other activities. Our 2013 BIG DIG found evidence of Iron Age, Roman and Early Mediaeval presence in the Thornton area and we’ll be following up these tantalising leads in future digs. In the 2014 season we also plan to investigate the elusive ‘Danes Pad’ and if you have an idea for a dig just get in touch. WAG is open to people of all ages and has previously provided practical experience for students going on to study for degrees in Archaeology. We’re keen to have new digging members but you’d be welcome whatever skill you might be able to bring at whatever level. We’re fully insured and we provide basic training and equipment. We’re affiliated to the Council for British Archaeology and have strong links with local professionals in the field. We meet at Farmer Parr’s in Thornton on the 3rd Wednesday of each month, starting at 7.00pm, to keep everyone informed of activities and there are occasional guest speakers.
