Results of Life In Wyre survey Eighty two per cent of residents in Wyre are happy with where they live according to a new survey.
T
he results of the 2014 Life in Wyre study were presented to Wyre Council’s Cabinet tonight(Wednesday) with members pleased at the high figure, which compares favourably to other parts of Lancashire. Several service areas also recorded improved satisfaction rates since the previous survey two years ago.
Residents were asked about their neighbourhood, what could make it better, their impressions of council services and how informed they feel. This year’s survey also included questions on health services and factors affecting people’s health. A total of 1,395 people completed the survey, a response rate of 47%. Roads, pavements and health services topped the list of areas that people wanted to see further improved, although these are not under Wyre Council’s direct control. Clean streets was third in the list, although in a separate question 74% said they were satisfied or very satisfied with the way the council provided this service.
In terms of individual council services, respondents were most satisfied with coast and countryside (88%), with waste and recycling (83%) and parks and open spaces (82%) close behind. Councillor Peter Gibson, Leader of Wyre Council, commented: ‘When you consider the economic climate and that many people are having a hard time of things, it’s reassuring to learn that 82% of residents are still happy with their communities. We were also pleased to see that satisfaction rates with individual council services have remained pretty constant even in the wake of severe Government funding cuts, a five-year Council Tax freeze and some tough decisions having to be made. The data has been broken down to town level so we can now start to look at where results haven’t been so favourable and how to address it. This is why I’d like to thank everyone who took the time to complete a survey. The feedback is invaluable in helping us shape future services, making sure resources are directed where they can be most effective.’ ‘The survey has also given us valuable insight into how people prefer to learn about council services and news. Our residents magazine, Wyre Voice, is still by far the most popular choice, but there was a really big jump in the numbers who want that information via social media and e-newsletters, which shows we were right to put more time and effort into improving our digital channels.’ The full results are available to download from the council website at www.wyre.gov.uk/ lifeinwyre

St Chad’s always welcomes new members and fees are very reasonable starting at £25 per year for Juniors. They have four Junior Teams two of which play in Div 1 of Fylde League and four Senior Teams. Match practices start in March but some members play all year round . Monday mornings are very popular for those not working when a group of hardy ladies play all year round and enjoy a cuppa afterwards. Age has no barrier as one the ladies will be 80 this year and proves that tennis keeps you young and fit. So why not come and join in ? In particular St Chads would like some more lady players especially if they could be potential Team players. Make this the year to return to fitness !

Twiddlemuffs for Dementia patients Hambleton Womens Institiute are busily knitting and sewing at their Craft club which meets every third Monday at the Village Hall at 1.30pm, here they show you how to make them. What you need: 1] 6.5mm Straight needles or 8cmm circular needles 2] Beads, zips, ribbons anything that can be twiddled with but not break 3] Wool. Twiddle muffs are perfect for using uo leftover wool. A variety of textures is ideal. Directions: • Make the cuff [ to go inside] • Cast on 40 stitches using two strands of double knitting wool or one strand Chunky • Work in Stocking stitch [knit a row then pearl a row] for 11 inches [28cm] • Continue with the body[outside of muff] • Knit in stocking stitch until work measures 23inches [58 cm] • Cast off • Decorate and finish • Attach beads, flowers, zips, loops, pom

The Fight Is On To Save Lives As Race For Life 2015 Launches In Blackpool Blackpool women are being urged to get the New Year off to a great start by signing up now to Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life 2015.

very hour, more than four people are diagnosed with cancer in the North West*. And that’s why Cancer Research UK is calling on women in Blackpool to fight back against this devastating disease by entering Race for Life 5k or 10k events at The Prom on Wednesday 1st July. As well as raising funds for life-saving research, taking part in Race for Life is an easy way to be more active – perfect for those setting themselves a fitness goal as their New Year’s resolution. Carrie Murphy, Cancer Research UK’s Blackpool Event Manager, said: ‘We’re urging women of all ages, shapes and sizes to take on Race for Life in their town and sign up now. Race for Life is non-competitive. It’s not about being fit or fast. Most women are able to walk 5k in an hour while chatting and having fun. Or they can choose to jog, run or even dance around the course if they prefer. A great test for the brain box as the customers still thought in “old money” and everything then had to have two values, until the ‘Big Boys’ came in like William Hill, bringing with them young men with financial skills and modern machines which worked everything out for the staff, and also brought in cleaner premises and no smoking rules which made her life a lot easier. Just turn up, or contact Simon on 07966 231 211 WYRE ARCHAEOLOGY Wyre Archaeology (WAG) offers a rare opportunity for anyone with an interest in the history of the Fylde Coast and North Preston areas to get hands on experience of practical archaeology through our regular programme of excavations and other activities. Our 2013 BIG DIG found evidence of Iron Age, Roman and Early Mediaeval presence in the Thornton area and we’ll be following up these tantalising leads in future digs. In the 2014 season we also plan to investigate the elusive ‘Danes Pad’ and if you have an idea for a dig just get in touch. WAG is open to people of all ages and has previously provided practical experience for students going on to study for degrees in Archaeology. We’re keen to have new digging members but you’d be welcome whatever skill you might be able to bring at whatever level. We’re fully insured and we provide basic training and equipment. We’re affiliated to the Council for British Archaeology and have strong links with local professionals in the field. We meet at Farmer Parr’s in Thornton on the 3rd Wednesday of each
