Your Year Ahead Aries

Your ruler Mars beats a retreat from April to June and this brings a natural hiatus to your year, the fallout from which will last well into July. But you should consider that, although your energy levels might deplete, itmaycome at exactly the right time because you’ll be more inclined to think about where you’re going in life rather than plumping for the first/easiest option. And change course only if necessary after this kind of forced spell of deliberation.The planet that rules luck, Jupiter, makes its annual move in August landing on its feet as usual, this time in your opposite sign. While it’s in Libra, where it’ll remain for 12 months, watch your luck in love improve as you attract someone generous, polished, if not a bit of a know-all, but if his or her heart’s in the right place I’m sure that you can forgive them that. All this adds up to a year when you’ll learn a lot about yourself and the benefits of patience because wisdom comes from not making snap judgements and truly taking people as they are without thinking that you know what’s best for them.

Taurus Mars is a planet that likes to mind its own business and, well, just get on with things really with the minimal amount of fuss, so we rely on it to fire us up when our internal pilot light is in danger of being snuffed out. But from April to June it’ll go backwards in Sagittarius and plough up some sticky emotional areas as far as you’re concerned.

This also of course strikes up some of your core sensitivities and may make you a bit more prickly than usual, but this is not a time to go it alone, so please do bear in mind that two heads are better than one whatever life throws at you during this time. A good place to start is by not continually testing their loyalty. Mars goes backwards from April to your roughly your birthday time,and this will bring a change to your working scenario and could mean that you do a lot more work alone. Alternatively, you may slow down if you’ve been overdoing it by living in the fast lane and running yourself ragged as a result, or spending more time at the gym than is good for you and your personal life. But the cavalry eventually arrives because the move of Jupiter in August is great for your life-work balance,for as well as bringing luck over family announcements, house moves and parents it also makes you feel a lot more centred and sure in yourself.

Leo There could be some mild confusion at work at the beginning of the year that your marvellous creativity will be able to find a workaround for. The only way to avoid criticism is by doing and saying nothing, and how boring is that! Mars, the planet that channels our energy and drive, goes backwards from April until June in the part of the chart that your sign rules. So generally speaking frustration levels are likely to rise, particularly if you again feel like your ideas are being dismissed (don’t let them grind you down), or you might find greater difficulty relating to younger people. Jupiter may be lucky but it doesn’t make you bulletproof so might be best not to think that you should always be the one footing the bill. The only other thing to watch out for is your ruler Mercury retrograde in your sign from roughly mid-August to mid-September throwing more than its fair share of spanners in the works and meaning that you’ll be chasing your tail quite a bit.

Libra What a year it’ll shape up to be for you, Libra.

But before we get the bit when you’re flying high, there’s a tiny bit of turbulence to negotiate between April and June when Mars goes backwards.

This is the planet that governs our drives and our determination to get things done so this might be a bit of a fallow period for you in terms of you being able to communicate with people effectively.

There’s a lot going in in the heavens this year, and distilling it down for you, the first thing that you should be aware of is Mars’s backward motion between April and June. It happens in your money sector, so as well as hold-ups with banks, property and mobilising funds in general you may also have to stand up to someone that gets a kick from putting you down or taking unnecessary pot shots at your contributions. Don’t be kept down at heel. National Breakfast Week...

Pep up your morning meal!

meal of the day. But below are just a few different options to pep up your morning meal, without having to prepare a full English breakfast.

However, we spend a 7th of our lives living Mondays and a 12th of our lives living January’s so it’s worth trying to brighten them up! Annually, in January, between 24th and 30th, the UK celebrates Breakfast Week! We all know it’s the most important meal of the day, we all know that, even when we’re getting to the office with our only sustenance, a large takeaway coffee. However, as having a good breakfast improves our mood, lifts energy levels and can affect our long term health, we surely owe it to ourselves, and what better time of the year than when we’re feeling low and lacking in energy!

2. Tantalising Toast - Usually stick with

anuary is typically a cold, miserable month. The post seasonal slump leaves us all with slightly too little money, we’re all still a bit too full after Christmas dinner (and Boxing Day snacking!) and frankly, January is the Monday of the year!

Cereal and toast are the two most common breakfast meals, they’re both quick and easy and can be eaten practically running out of the door. And we are not all suddenly going to be able to find an extra hour to prepare that first 42

1. Grab & Go - If you really do have to have your morning meal on the run; instead of grabbing a sugary breakfast biscuit or breakfast bar. Have a couple of ounces of cheese as a portion, chuck in a few walnuts and a piece of fruit and provide yourself with a much healthier, fibre and protein rich start to the day. butter or marmite on your toast? Think about adding a couple of tablespoons of ricotta and some halved cherry tomatoes instead, or slice some banana on top of a thin layer of peanut butter, for the same amount of time but a more satisfying and filling breakfast.

3. Savoury Muffins - Eggs and Bacon can be time consuming when you have to get to the office after dropping the kids off at school.

But while you’re making dinner one night or when you have a spare half an hour; mix together some pieces of bacon, mushroom, a bit

of cheese, spinach or tomato (let your imagination guide you!) put your chosen ingredients in a cupcake or muffin tray and add as many whisked uncooked eggs as required to cover each portion and put into the oven for 10/15 minutes. Once cooked and cooled, they can be frozen or kept in the fridge for a couple of days and grabbed by all the family on their way to school or work.

and enjoy smoothies, you can add pretty much any fruit combination and/or any nuts or cereals you fancy and blitz it into a nutritious drink in no time. If even chopping up a banana and strawberries may take up too much of the morning, you can pre cut the ingredients and store them into individual portions in freezer bags and freeze them. Using frozen portions will also make for a thicker smoothie.

4. Eggs in Bulk - Eggs are a very healthy start to the day but if you don’t have time to sit down to boiled egg and soldiers of a morning; you can again make them in advance in bulk in the oven without having to watch a pan. Just put a batch of eggs in the oven for roughly 30 minutes (put them on a baking tray or keep them steady in a cupcake tray). Once baked, add them to ice water to finish off and peel for a batch of hardboiled eggs ready to be eaten in the car, at your desk, or as needed! (Of course boiling them in a pan takes much less time but if you fancy being able to add them to the oven whilst you look dinner or take the dog for a walk, this is a handy alternative)

If you tend to let your breakfast routine slide, give one of the above a go and see if it delays your lunchtime cravings; and if you can find the time, Breakfast Week is a great opportunity to really enjoy your breakfast time and maybe try out a few new recipes.

5. Super Smoothie - If you have a blender

With a quarter of us admitting to skipping breakfast once or more during the week, and 13% of people never eating it, what better time than January to reboot your morning routine, and ensuring you’re giving yourself the healthiest and best chance from the beginning of your morning. January may well typically be a dreary month, but if you take on and get involved in this years Breakfast Week, you can ensure that your 2016 has a fresher, brighter start!

Booths surplus food provides good cheer all year round

ooths has been thanked for its generosity after the well-known family firm has agreed to support the Blackpool Food Partnership all year round.

It’s now donating surplus bread, veg and fruit to the award winning Partnership which co-ordinates and delivers food three times a week to charities, hostels, children’s centres, luncheon clubs and community kitchens across Blackpool, enabling thousands more people to receive help and develop community spirit.

Poulton Stores for the Partnership, along with leaflets explaining the type of food needed. “To be able to do something kind and practical with our food waste means a great deal to Booths, and it’s both reassuring to know we’ve been able to help so many people locally,” explained Colin Porter from the company.

Nikki Hart, project manager from Methodist Action NW which runs the Partnership said: “The best use of surplus food isn’t a bin, it’s a belly.

“Blackpool Food Partnership is now distributing £57,000 a year of surplus food. We currently collect frozen bread, fruit and vegetables, damaged tinned and dried items from Booths and will soon be collecting some dairy products too.

“We distribute to Fleetwood Foodbank, and a range of churches and charities across the Fylde coast.”

advice on staying warm and well this Winter Over the last ten years a staggering quarter of a million older people have died from the cold.

Research shows that exposure to the cold can have a devastating impact on the health of older people, who are particularly vulnerable to the impact of low temperatures. As people get older it takes longer to warm up which can be bad for people’s health. The cold thickens blood and increases blood pressure, and breathing in cold air can increase the risk of chest infections.

The good news is that preparing effectively for the cold weather can literally save lives. That’s why this winter Age UK will be working hard to remind older people and carers of the importance of taking simple precautions to stay warm and well.

The Charity is urging people to call Age UK Advice for free on 0800 169 65 65, and order a free copy of the Charity’s ‘Winter Wrapped Up’ guide which contains a free thermometer and provides tips on staying warm in winter. Alternatively the guide can be downloaded from www. spreadthewarmth.org.uk where contact details for local Age UKs can also be found.

AGE UK’S TOP TIPS FOR STAYING WARM AND WELL THIS WINTER l 64°F (18°C) is the ideal temperature for your bedroom and 70°F (21°C) is the ideal temperature for your living room. Check your thermostat or use a room thermometer to monitor temperature l Keep your bedroom window shut on at night.

Breathing in cold air can increase the risk of chest infections. l Stay active and when you are indoors try not to sit still for more than an hour, if you can get up.

Walk around or make a hot drink. l Eat well. It’s important to eat well, especially in the winter. Have at least one hot meal a day and have regular hot drinks, as they help to keep you warm. Also stock up on basic food items in case of a cold snap.

Caroline Abrahams, Charity Director at Age UK, said: “Although it sounds like common sense, advising people on how to stay warm in winter can actually make all the difference. Many people are not fully aware of how the cold affects our bodies differently as we age and how, if we don’t take sensible precautions, it can very quickly put our lives in danger.

Age UK’s Campaign for Warm Homes For many years, Age UK has argued that improving energy efficiency in people’s homes is the long term to solution to the high levels of excess winter deaths, winter health problems and fuel poverty amongst older people in England.

Due to the closure of one of the Government’s flagship energy efficiency programme - the Green Deal - currently there is very limited support for anyone who wants to install measures to make their home warmer.
