ADVERTISE YOUR BUSINESS

0800 970 7687

to your Poulton Le Fylde & Garstang Magazine. Time for a Fresh Start in 2015, so let me first wish you a Happy New Year – and may it be a great one! We hope it brings success and happiness, and that you carry the experience of the past into a brighter future. We’ve had a great start to the year with our biggest month in business, which means we are helping more businesses than ever before in providing a cost effective solution to reaching the local market. By dedicating our magazines to specific areas we can support local shopping more than any other local media. Two new magazines are soon to be launched, both at 20,000 copies per month: One will be in the Ribble Valley, covering east Preston through to Clitheroe, while we are also producing a new Chorley edition for this growth area, expanding into the surrounding villages. Recent Testimonial just in: “The Link Magazine has continued to be a reliable and solid advertising source whilst providing both good quality print and cost effectiveness on distribution. At one point we had to stop advertising as we were inundated with work! Customer service and the whole process of booking advertising is smooth and flawless.” – LazyLawn Lancashire. Well done to last month’s winner: Joan Andrews for the Where Am I? Competition. £50 is on its way. Once again, have a Great New Year!

A number of years ago we moved to Brickhouse Farm with our two daughters. Our youngest daughter was later involved in an accident, which left her with disabilities. When she eventually came out of hospital we had to adapt our house to cater for her needs; ramps, level floor access and a large wetroom to make things easier for all of us. We received such amazing support from our community that in time we felt we wanted to give something back and since speaking with so many families in similar situations to ourselves, all of which struggled to find holiday accommodation with adequate adaptations, we decided to try to make a difference. We now aim to accommodate all abilities so all you have to do is call or email us and we will try our best to make your stay as comfortable as possible.

Julie Nash Fine Art & Tuition

Anyone can have a go at painting and everyone can get enjoyment from it. It’s the perfect way to relax, make new friends and forget your troubles. Getting started can be daunting and people often worry they won’t be good enough to join a class. I’ll let you into a secret - Everyone feels like that at first. Because of this, all my tuition is very informal but you’ll still learn loads of stuff. Dave and I welcome you into our home and we strive to create a warm and inviting atmosphere, because we want you to enjoy your visit. Weekend workshops are ideal taster days (all materials and lunch included). Free dog chipping sessions

The local RSPCA will be holing a FREE chipping month January down at Longview Animal Centre. It will be a legal requirement in 2016 to have all dogs microchipped so take advantage of this in January at Old Toms Lane, Stalmine, FY6 0JR. Pets have to be at least 12 weeks old.

Current building work on the new dog kennels staying together would be ideal.

Don’t worry if you miss out the sessions at the end of January as they will be doing a few different micro chipping events throughout the year probably at our charity shops and in the local community. These will be confirmed in March so keep an eye out for LINKMag or head to the local RSPCA website at www. rspcablackpool.org.uk. There are also plans for a St John’s ‘Mini Fun Dog Show’ in May, the date should be confirmed in March along with a list of other events throughout the year to help support animals in need. There will be a Sponsored go ape in Easter if you want to sponsor the four members of staff taking part, all of them afraid of heights so this will be a challenge for them climbing and swinging in trees for the day in Bolton! They are still building the dog kennels but they are coming along well and hope to be open early 2015 they will be planning a big open day. There are still lots of cats and small animals needing homes. They have two baby rabbits, 2 months old who need a new home, they are in a foster home at the moment so really need a new home. They are sisters so

The RSPCA will be getting involved in lots of local events with small businesses and schools Due to an impressive success with primary school talks last year they will be available for schools to start booking with them from January onwards. They do them any time of the year and enjoy educating the children and getting them involved with the work they do at the Centre. Volunteers are needed at our charity shops and when the dogs come in they will need volunteers down at the Animal Centre. They encourage people to help them with fund raising events, dog walking (once the dogs are in, please note you need to be at least 18 years or over.), cat cuddlers, helping socialise the smaller animals, people to help on reception, animal care helpers and home visitors. People can apply by ringing up the Centre or requesting a form by email enquiries@rspcablackpool.org.uk Further info at www.rspcablackpool.org.uk. RSPCA Longview Animal Centre, Old Toms Lane, Stalmine, Poulton-Le-Fydle, FY6 0JR. Opening times 11am5pm Tue-Sun. Contact: 01253 703000, enquiries@ rspcablackpool.org

Kick start your New Year With recipes packed full of nutritional vegetables

Grilled red peppers with chorizo toasts Serves 4 Ingredients 2 red peppers 4 tomatoes 4-8 slices bread 1 garlic clove 75g cooking chorizo, sliced 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 2 tbsp sherry vinegar Small handful of basil leaves

Preparation 1. Preheat the grill. Cut the peppers in half and place cut side down on a baking sheet and grill until the skins have blackened. Put in a bowl, cover with a pan lid and set aside for 10-15 minutes to allow the skins to steam off. Peel and cut into thin slices. 2. Cut the tomatoes in half, then deseed each half. Finely chop or whiz in a food processor to give the same texture. Lightly toast the bread, then rub one side only with the garlic clove. 3. Put the chorizo in a pan – there’s no need for any oil as the chorizo has enough fat in it already. Cook over a medium heat until the chorizo starts to turn golden. 4. Add the peppers, along with the extra virgin olive oil and sherry vinegar. Cook for 1-2 minutes until the mixture looks a little saucy. 5. Divide the chopped tomatoes among the toasts, and then top with the pepper and chorizo. Garnish with basil.

Community sports scheme expands

A new and improved community sports scheme has come to the Wyre TrySport is a year round initiative that offers young people aged 7-20 years old the chance to try a variety of different sports, from football and street dance to dodgeball and free running. With 14 different sessions across Wyre every week, it is hoped that the popular scheme will attract more participants than ever in 2015. Following consultation with young people and parents, the programme has been refreshed with extra sessions in Preesall and Garstang. The council has also joined forces with Tommy’s Club for Young People to bring TrySport Multi Sports Club to Tommy’s Gym in Fleetwood. Councillor Lynne Bowen, Cabinet member with responsibility for sport at Wyre Council, said: ‘This year we’ve run over 600 TrySport sessions across the borough which is fantastic, however we want to make it bigger and better than ever next year. We’ve taken people’s views into account to make sure that the programme offers activities that young people want to try, at convenient times and venues so that more people are able to join in. Apart from the obvious health benefits of taking part in sport, the scheme also helps to develop confidence and gives young people a chance to socialise in a safe and positive environment.’

A special reward scheme provides an additional incentive to join TrySport, thanks to the respective community trusts of both Fleetwood Town Football Club and Blackpool Football Club. Participants are rewarded for regular attendance with match tickets to either Blackpool or Fleetwood Town. Included in the programme is Fleetwood Multi-Stars Sports Club, for young people aged 8 - 20 years with disabilities, at Fleetwood High School on Thursday evenings offering alternative sports such as trampolining, new age curling, Boccia and table tennis. The council is also continuing to work with Fleetwood Town Football Club Community Trust and Fleetwood High School to provide football sessions for boys and girls aged 8-16 years on Friday evenings. Most sessions are free of charge however there are small charges for Fleetwood MultiStars Sports Club and Multi Sports Club at Tommy’s (£1 per hour and 50p per session respectively). The new programme began on Monday 5 January 2015. Find out more and download the programme at wyre.gov.uk/trysport

‘Sponsor A Sleeper To Fleetwood’ appeal Poulton and Wyre Railway Society work to restore railway line

T

he Poulton & Wyre Railway are refurbishing the currently out of use railway line from Thornton to the Wyre Way as a tourist attraction and we need your help. As part of the wider project to reopen the entire line from Poulton to Fleetwood, the PWR intend to operate trains over a short section which we believe will lead to a full reinstatement of the railway to the port.

as well as tidying up the area around Hillylaid crossing. NPL Estates have also very kindly allowed us to store and carry out work to our locomotive on the Hillhouse site for a number of years for which we are very grateful. We have amassed lots of equipment over the last eight years and are now poised to move from being a static exhibit to an operating railway.

The infrastructure is in good condition requiring minimal work only. Much of this has already been carried out and we anticipate passenger trains running as early as 2016. These services would be limited to a couple of days a week through the tourist season and would be aimed primarily at families, walkers and those that would just like to ride on a train.

Our latest appeal “sponsor a sleeper to Fleetwood” will see the track between Thornton and the Cala Gran caravan park (Fleetwood) brought up to a good condition. Most of the track over this section was re-laid in the 1990s, leaving only three short older sections requiring attention. This was intended to be a member’s only appeal however; people from outside our group are keen to support us (including Link Magazine) and have doubled our first months target in two weeks. You can see a full explanation and details of how to donate at www.pwrs.org

The Poulton & Wyre Railway Society was formed in 2006 with the aim to reopen the railway for commuters and tourists. Since then we have been looking at various options with Network Rail, Lancashire County Council and Wyre borough council and while there is a desire to reopen the line as part of the national commuter network, it is just not possible at this point in time. The PWR will not however stand in the way of any national scheme to link Fleetwood to the network if funding became available and in fact will ensure that we hand back a fit for purpose operating railway to Network Rail. Our volunteers are currently refurbishing Thornton and Burn Naze stations to an operational standard, 40

We are always on the lookout for new volunteers, so if you feel this is the project for you then please get in touch by either visiting our website or calling into Thornton station on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. Check out the web site www.pwrs.org or ring 07801813531 for further information on donating

B&FC’s Adam Plummer prepares to L-R: Sam Schofield, Cuadrilla; Alison, Georgina and Tony Raynor of release the college demonstration of next Abbey Telecom. year’s challenge.

Cuadrilla Resources and Centrica Energy promote education and skills in Lancashire Education and the search for engineers of the future was the theme of a highly successful business dinner held at Fylde Rugby Club.

T

he third annual dinner was a networking event for more than 100 educationalists, business chiefs and local authority representatives to learn about job opportunities and the need to fill a future engineering skills gap. The competition, with a £12,000 prize fund, is jointly organised by Cuadrilla, Centrica Energy, Blackpool and Fylde College and Johnston Press. Francis Egan, Cuadrilla’s Chief Executive, spoke of the requirement to nurture a skilled local workforce in preparation for the potential requirements of the shale gas industry. He said: ‘At Cuadrilla we are working very hard on a solution to deliver the natural gas present in the shale beneath our feet here in Lancashire. Supplying cost effective, secure and safe energy for the future is a significant engineering and social challenge. There will be many other such challenges facing future generations. Having seen the talent that is being nurtured in Lancashire’s schools I am confident that our young engineers will rise confidently to address those challenges. Mr Egan also spoke of the need to inspire tomorrow’s engineers and launched Young Engineers 2015 - a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) challenge aimed to engage Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre school pupils, aged 13-15, in a fun and exciting way.’ Greg McKenna, Centrica’s Director of NonOperated Assets, said that Centrica was proud to be a part of the Young Engineer competition - and also looked forward to the development of students at the newly announced National

College Onshore Oil and Gas at the Blackpool and the Fylde College. Mr McKenna explained: ‘The North West is already a key region for us. We employ nearly 500 people in the area and have been active here for over 30 years with Morecombe Hub – the largest gas hub in the UK. Through our business activities we have existing connections with Blackpool and Fylde College, and the recent announcement of the new onshore energy college represents a big chance to further extend the training opportunities for local people. We currently face a shortfall of engineers and already Centrica has recruited over 1200 apprentices across the UK because the next generation are so critical to the success of our business. The Young Engineers competition is important as it will help to increase interest in engineering and contribute to ensuring the local area flourishes as a hub for the energy sector.’ Daryl Platt, Blackpool and the Fylde College’s Executive Director for Commercial Development, said that being a hub for one of the National Colleges was a privilege and a testament to the high quality skills training as well as their strong relationships with industry-leading organisations such as Centrica Energy and Cuadrilla Resources. Crucially, it will drive long term investment in the region and meet the demand for highly skilled labour and secure local jobs. This is very positive news for Blackpool, the Fylde Coast and the whole of Lancashire. We will deliver a comprehensive range of advanced qualifications, up to and including honours degree programmes, aimed at producing the next generation of highly skilled engineers and technicians.’

Setting goals for a healthier New Year By Danielle Jordan

S

etting goals are part and parcel of the New Year, we reflect on the twelve months that have past and wonder if we are where we wanted to be. With the dominance of social media, we now also have shiny glittering photos of all our family and friends lives that always look more successful, more fulfilling and generally better than ours. This of course is due to the fact that we only post our highlights on Facebook; the majority of people on your friends list don’t have a backstage pass to the less enjoyable moments! But ignoring the social side, the New Year is when we decide how we will improve our lives in the year ahead. January seems to have a feel of a fresh slate, a new beginning that we don’t associate with any other time in the calendar. The most common goals are to quit smoking, lose weight and gain better employment/promotion or change your job. These are three rather massive life changes, you go to work nearly every day, your weight is directly linked (in the most part) to your daily diet and exercise regime and if you’re a smoker, you smoke every day. To change such ingrained habits are not easy. Depressingly, one survey I came across quotes only 8% as average of individuals achieving their goals. With these statistics we need all the help we can get so here are my tips for achieving your goals.

1

Find your end goal and make suitable landmarks. If you want to lose two stone that’s great but why not start off with the aim to lose 5lbs in a month? By showing yourself you can do it in smaller steps, those little chunks will soon add up, and you’ll look back and realise how far you’ve come.

It’s not easy and it can be difficult to persevere when it feels like a losing battle. But you’re not at war, just because things haven’t changed by January 2nd does not mean that you’re not going to see the changes you want to. So if you desire, you will get there and in the meantime, have a very happy year ahead.

Gaultheria

Use pots in contemporary design

(Winter green)

You may see a lot of these small shrubs in garden centres bearing their colourful red or purple berries at the moment, and they can be easily grown in pots of ericaceous compost or in a garden with lime-free soil in partial shade. Gaultheria is most commonly seen as ground cover under rhododendrons or camellias, but if you want a taller variety you can choose G shallon, which grows to 1.5m, producing dark purple berries. Others, such as G mucronata, are more suitable to add low-growing interest to containers or borders, with their large porcelain-like berries in shades of dark pink, red and white appearing in November.

1

If you want the pot to make an impact, select the pot for its architectural shape rather than plant-holding abilities. Sometimes the pot will provide more of a wow factor without a plant in it.

Male and female flowers are nearly always borne by different varieties, so you need to plant more than one type to be sure you will have berries. Female varieties include ‘Cherry Ripe’ and ‘Lilian’, while male types include ‘Thymifolia’ or ‘Male’.

Horseradish If you’ve loved horseradish with your roast beef this winter, why not try growing your own for an eye-poppingly hot accompaniment?

Buy plants from specialist herb nurseries, or some seed companies offer roots in their autumn catalogues for planting up in late winter or early spring.

Be warned, though, it’s an invasive perennial with deep roots that regrow when they’re broken off and, once established, can be as difficult to get rid of as ground elder.

Make a hole in the soil with a dibber and push a single root into it, thickest end uppermost, leaving the tip at ground level. Plant three roots about 60cm apart for a good clump. Let the plants grow for two years before harvesting.

Grow it in a bottomless bucket sunk into the ground with its rim about an inch above the surface Dig up one plant in September so that the roots don’t spread or October, using the biggest up there and to keep clumps in roots for the kitchen and cutting check. off one of the thinner roots to Only the root of horseradish replant. (Armoracia rusticana) is used. Advertise your business call 0800 970 7687 or email info@link-mag.co.uk

2

Buy identical pots for a strong statement - a row of three tall containers, for instance, will look more impressive than a group of pots of different shapes, sizes and colours.

3

If you want a burst of colour in a space, consider using a pot rather than a plant for that purpose.

Things to do this month… n Make sure that tender and half-hardy fuchsias, remaining dormant in their pots, do not become completely dry. Spray any early growth with tepid water in the light to soften the wood, but do this sparingly. n When watering plants (sparingly) in the greenhouse, water them as early in the day as possible, so that surfaces are dry before nightfall. n Order new summerflowering bulbs and tubers from a reputable supplier. Store them in shallow boxes or trays and keep in a dry, frostfree place until ready to plant. 45

Fantastic Boost for SOTOS Research Very little is known about SOTOS a syndrome that affects roughly 1 in14,000 babies born

I

t is often hard to diagnose but can be characterised by gigantism, behavioural problems alongside immune disorders and learning difficulties. That sounds very simplistic but no two children born with the syndrome will fit that description. So there is a great need for more research into the causes and how genetic science can help to find a cure. North Fylde Inner Wheel hosted a Charity Night at the house of Terri Williams in Poulton for this worthy cause and were pleased to have raised over £600. About sixty members and friends from local Inner Wheels supported the event. North Fylde decided on supporting SOTOS after hearing a very moving and sometimes harrowing account from Sue Eaton who spoke to the North Fylde group about her daughter Emily May who she gave birth to eleven years ago and who was eventually diagnosed with SOTOS. Sue said ‘eleven years ago it was difficult to get a diagnosis of Emily’s condition as so little was known and this is why a night such as this is great for raising awareness’.

46

is no stranger to fund raising both nationally and internationally and this year’s President, Margaret Kerekjarto, said ‘this night is very much a local fund raiser as we have the evidence of this cause right here in Emily May who lives in Thornton’. The money was raised by raffles, competitions, Christmas produce, Cards, good as new clothes , Avon cosmetics and Jewellery from Jonathan’s Fleetwood Market The highlight of the evening was a Christmas flower arranging demonstration by Barbara Riley from Fleetwood Flower Arranging Club. She produced a beautiful Christmas arrangement which was later raffled . So after Christmas canapes and mulled wine the ladies made their way home after a very enjoyable and productive evening. Teanlowe Community Centre Closure? Help by signing the petition against closure. The centre is based on Queensway, Poulton-leFylde. It was built 40 years ago specially for the elderly of Poulton and Wyre at no expense to the Council who now own the building. The Centre is used by up to 150 people Monday to Saturday between 10am and 1pm. Four local churches - St Chads, St Johns RC, Poulton Methodists and St Martin & St Hilda, together with the WRVS and a Volunteer group provide a rota of up to 100 volunteer helpers. Wyre has the largest elderly population in Lancashire. Wyre Council informed the Centre in July this year that because of budget cuts they would be marketing the building for commercial/ retail use to raise much needed funds. The centre is self-sufficient, has recently paid out £6,500 for a new kitchen & carpet and contributes towards utility bills. The Centre occupies approx one-third of the building. However the Centre does not pay rent or rates or external building maintenance. On the 16 October Ethel Brookes, Chairperson of the centre and Philip Howarth spoke at the Full Council meeting asking the council to reconsider its position. Stephanie Tufft, Chief Executive Lancashire Age UK had written in advance of the Council Meeting.to Peter Gibson, leader of Wyre Council and Garry Payne, Wyre Council Chief Executive in support of keeping the Centre open at its present location which is Fully INCLUSIVE to everyone wishing to use the Centre. Stephanie Tufft said; ‘Age UK Lancashire is working hard to support groups of this nature all around Lancashire because we believe that they are the forefront of provision to encourage greater levels of independence through improved health and well being. With one in 10 people 65 and over saying that they always or often feel intensely lonely it is easy to see how the type of community based provision provided by this group is essential. Without these services many older people are left isolated and lonely and a 50% higher risk of death’ Councillor Alan Vincent (Resources Portfolio Holder) responded by explaining the Council would be happy to meet with Lancashire Age UK and the Centre. He stated that the council would withdraw marketing the building for the next 12 months. On the 20th November a meeting took place at the Civic Centre to discuss ways to enable the Centre to remain in its present building.

50

Representing the Council were Garry Payne (Chief Executive) Mark Broadhurst (Head of Housing Services) Lancashire Age UK were represented by Alison Read (Engangement Director) and Anne Oliver (Services Co-ordinator). The Centre was represented by Ethel Brookes and Philip Howarth. It was agreed that the Council would give the Centre a cost breakdown for rental based on the part of the building the Centre occupies. The Centre would use its Charitable status with support from Age UK to access funding/ sponsorship. As we enter a New Year the Centre is optimistic that it can be there for those aged 60+ in Wyre and district for the next 40 years. The Centre has had fantastic support from the local community - 1000 people have already signed our petition against closure. Stephanie Tufft explained to Wyre Council in support of the good being done by the Centre. “This sort of social interaction is essential for many older people providing vital social interaction and helping to reduce loneliness”. What can you do? If you are age 60+ or know anyone of that age please make use of the Centre. Also please pop in to sign our petition against closure.

In the 2014 season we also plan to investigate the elusive ‘Danes Pad’ and if you have an idea for a dig just get in touch. WAG is open to people of all ages and has previously provided practical experience for students going on to study for degrees in Archaeology. We’re keen to have new digging members but you’d be welcome whatever skill you might be able to bring at whatever level. We’re fully insured and we provide basic training and equipment. We’re affiliated to the Council for British Archaeology and have strong links with local professionals in the field. SWEET DEALS ON SURGERY, THE FRANCEENS, DINOSAURS ARE SH*T DRAGONS Saturday 7th March, 8pm The Ferret, 55 Fylde Road, Preston, Lancashire, PR1 2XQ. Sweet Deals On Surgery are a band of three men from the north of England who play catchy/shouty/indie/punk rock and drink too much. Alex-Bass/Voice Rob-Guitar/ Voice Tim-Drums have just released their debut E.P ‘Total Reek Hole’, with song titles such as ‘Elvis Costello is a w****r’ and ‘Desk from the waist down’ it’s safe to say SDOS don’t take themselves too seriously. Make no mistake though, the songs contained within these titles are well crafted, melodic, instantly catchy noise pop, with structures that veer a little from the norm. The Franceens are a 3 piece rock and roll band from York UK. They have been described by many as being a ‘real band’. They are known for their ferocious live shows, constant gigging, and their high-energy version of garage/rock and roll style music. Dinosaurs Are Sh*t Dragons: while most bands try to be something they’re not this Blackpool 4 piece are trying hard to not be something they are: socially-inept, culturally-handicapped genre cuckoos: pinching the best bits of a mixed bag of influences and inciting big dumb sing alongs across the North West with a barely contained energy that makes onlookers wonder if they’re trying to kill each other. Sure, it’s not big or clever or cool, but maybe that’s the Music Industry’s problem, maybe it should take a little break from its fancy haircuts and status updates and just have a bit of a laugh.

Free Entrance. http://theferret.info

GOONIES NEVER SAY DIE, CONSTANT WAVES + TRIBAL FIGHTERS Saturday 28th March, 8pm The Ferret, 55 Fylde Road, Preston, Lancashire, PR1 2XQ. Goonies Never Say Die are a five piece instrumental/ post-rock band from Blackpool. They have released two albums on Deep Elm Records with a third to follow in 2015.
