Eat, drink and be Healthy this Winter - by Mandy Mitcham The nights have drawn in and the temperature is falling, so we know, Winter is nearly upon us. It’s the time of year when we all need to ensure our health and well-being is given less closer attention. One positive thing we can do to help us stay well is to eat a good nutritional diet and of course to drink adequate amounts of fluid, and although Christmas is just around the corner, I’m not talking about the alcoholic liquids! Having a hot drink helps our bodies keep warm and is also psychologically very comforting, just imagine your hands wrapped around a hot mug of tea right now. So many clients who have come to stay at Porritt House, have regrettably developed the habit of having just small amounts or only finishing half the cupful. When you get a little older it’s easy to think that drinking less will make it easier to not have to rush to the toilet quite so soon or so often. Unfortunately this is not normally the case, as by drinking less the Bladder becomes more irritated and this can lead to continence problems and worse, our bladders not working how and when we would like them too. During the Jubilee Year celebrations I remember watching The Queen and Prince Philip as they sailed down the river Thames on the Royal Barge and commented how during all the time of the journey and the events following neither of them had taken on any fluids. I was not therefore totally surprised when 48 hours later the Prince developed a bladder infection and eventually needed admitting to hospital for urgent treatment. Thankfully he fully recovered, but might not have done, as bladder infections can cause serious kidney problems or failure. Food is just as important as drinks, and during the colder weather it’s easy to find preparing meals physically challenging, depriving your body of the essential fuels it needs to cope. Making do with a sandwich or a light cold snack is insufficient to keep you fit and well, and often ends with comments from family and friends like “you're a shadow of your former self”. However, not only do you lose body fat when eating incorrectly, but your body will go raiding its deposits for the essential nutrients and proteins it needs, depriving your major organs, the heart, brain, lungs and kidneys and of course those big bulky leg muscles that keep you standing and walking. No surprise then that poor eating and drinking habits can lead to increased problems with already weakening organs and also often leads to falls and stumbles which can sometimes culminate in broken hips and other bones and a prolonged stay in hospital, not to mention the effect it can have on your brain, memory and reasoning functions.
