Park View 4 U putting the heart back into Lytham
T
he Park View 4U community park in Lytham has achieved LOVEmyBEACH accreditation for its Eco Pod. The park team has developed their ecological credentials since the café received a LOVEmyBEACH certificate two years ago to make sure the Pod loves the beach just as much. The wooden-clad Eco Pod is a LOVEmyBEACH business thanks to harvesting rain water to flush the toilets, having duel flush toilets, having bins and LOVEmyBEACH toilet stickers in each cubicle asking people to bin anything other than the 3Ps – pee, poo and (toilet) paper. The education team based in the Eco Pod are great advocates of looking after and loving the beach. They run beach school activities for schools and groups which teach children why looking after the beach and sea are so important and what they do such as not littering or feeding the birds. Park View 4U uses the free LOVEmyBEACH education pack downloaded from lovemybeach.org Julie Norman, the Park Ranger at Park View 4U said: “We are absolutely delighted to receive our LOVEmyBEACH business certificates and are keen to encourage visitors to the Eco Pod and Park View Cafe to consider how they can help to keep our beaches clean.” “On the park we already have rainwater harvesting toilets in the Eco Pod, water butts in the kitchen garden and we recycle our kitchen oil so that no fat is poured down the sink. We have now added the LOVEmyBEACH stickers to our toilets and are promoting the message of think before you flush via our Beach School Programme. Thank you to Emma
and all the groups who keep our coastline litter free so we can safely take school groups onto the beach and show them the fantastic wildlife we have on our coast. We are proud to support all of your hard work and encourage others to do the same.” Fylde LOVEmyBEACH officer Emma Whitlock added: “The sea at St Annes beaches is better than ever having been awarded ‘Excellent’ and ‘Good’ ratings by the Environment Agency in 2015. We work with local businesses and communities to help improve maintain and improve how clean the water is. I love seeing the passion the Park View team has for the beach!” Park View 4U are ‘putting the heart back into Lytham’ through their community activities, café, park and play area for all the family. The LOVEmyBEACH campaign has great tips to protect and improve water quality, including: • Blockages in the drains can cause sewers to back up and overflow onto streets or into streams, rivers and the sea. Help avoid blockages by only flushing the 3Ps – pee, poo and paper. Everything else e.g. wet wipes, sanitary products and cotton buds, goes in the bin. • Cooking oils and fat can also cause drain blockages if poured down the sink as they set hard. Cool them first then put in the bin. • You can help at the beach too by bagging and binning your litter and dog’s mess and by not feeding the birds. • Check your drains at home aren’t sending dirty water from toilets, showers and dishwashers into the wrong pipes and to rivers and the sea – go to www. connectright.org.uk • If you spot pollution, call the Environment Agency incident line on 0800 80 70 60

New Fundraising Group launches in Lytham St Annes
A
new volunteer Fundraising Group has launched in Lytham St Annes to raise funds for Marie Curie.
Beth True the group’s Treasurer joined the Fundraising Group for personal reasons she said, “Marie Curie is a charity that is very close to my heart. After being diagnosed with Bowel Cancer in 2004, my dad was cared for by the fantastic nurses at Marie Curie in the last few weeks of his life. These nurses enabled him to have his wish of dying in the comfort of his own home with his family at his side. This is my way of giving back to the charity that helped my family so much during such a tough time.” The Lytham St Annes Fundraising Group will raise vital funds so Marie Curie Nurses in the Fylde area can continue to provide free care to people with terminal illnesses. They will raise money through supporting
Marie Curie’s major fundraising campaigns such as the Great Daffodil Appeal and Blooming Great Tea Party, as well as promoting fundraising within the local community and encouraging new supporters to help the charity. Community Fundraiser at Marie Curie, said: “The new Fundraising Group in Lytham St Annes will make a huge difference locally by helping to raise the vital funds needed to support Marie Curie Nurses, they are already looking at planning their own events and I am very happy to be able to support such an enthusiastic group!” The local Fundraising Group are still looking for more members, so to find out more and other ways to support the charity, please call Katherine Howell on 01254 855 043 or email on katherine.howell@ mariecurie.org.uk
