Harvest Festival Each year the children at Thornton Primary school celebrate Harvest Festival to give thanks for the food that they eat. The children are encouraged to bring food from their homes to donate to people in the local community who are less fortunate than themselves. In previous years the donations have gone to local Day Centers and old people’s homes. This year however, the Salvation Army came to school to collect the donations and distribute the goods amongst local homeless people and people in need.

855099, delivered an assembly on helping others - not only by giving food but by giving seeds and quipment to others less fortunate that ourselves.

Father Neil, demonstrated this concept to the children by using potatoes and saying that rather than eating all the potatoes, if the people planted one potato then more would grow. If they then ate a small amount of the potatoes they had grown and planted some more then they would eventually have more than enough for themselves and could help others in the same predicament. Oh I do like to live beside the seaside... On Friday 15th October, four Year Four children and four Year Five children, accompanied by Teaching Assistants Mrs. Whiteoak and Mrs. Barnes, joined Wyre Borough Council’s Senior Countryside Officer and Waterfront Ranger, Len Blacow, for the “What lives out there?” Strand Line Survey of Fleetwood Beach to look at what the tides have brought ashore. Len supports volunteers in active management of the council’s natural environment and biodiversity. The strandline marks the very edge of the sea. It can be seen as a line of seaweed and other debris left stranded on the beach at high water mark. At each high tide the sea deposits an accumulation of debris on the shore. Winds and waves wash up large amounts of seaweed that has been broken from colonies growing on reefs offshore and other flotsam, as well as the remains of some of the animal inhabitants of the sea. Terrestrial organic debris, such as grasses and leaves, is also deposited. This straggling collection of debris is what is known as the strandline.

on the dry sand on the beach, it wasn’t long before Len had the children engaged in their gathering activities and walking out quite far onto the damp, wet sand where different types of debris were located. The children really became engrossed in walking through the wet and squelching sand – and walked quite a bit further out towards the sea than they would normally venture.

The children, all wearing wellies and warm clothing were given gloves and collecting bags and encouraged to look for and collect shells, seaweed and other debris in the strand line. The children were eager to begin their quest and soon started to fill their bags with lots of After an hour of collecting items from the interesting and exciting things. After starting off sand and mud, the children

returned to the Marine Hall where they emptied the contents of their bags onto a large plastic sheet in order to identify their objects. Len provided identification sheets and the children were encouraged to identify as many items as they could for themselves using these sheets.

Whilst they children were comparing their finds, Len noted the results to send off to The Cumbria Wildlife Trust who collate the results. Some of the finds included bladderwrack, gut weed, whelks and a variety of razor shells, cockles and crabs. Len was really knowledgeable and was able to identify items not on the sheets and gave us lots of valuable details about the creatures and their habits. For example, the Oyster whelk fixes itself onto its prey, drills a whole through its shell, pours

its digestive juices into the shell and sucks up the creature once it has been liquefied by the digestive juices. The children just loved these gory details! After the session finished, and they had eaten their picnic lunches, the children were able to take their ‘treasure’ back to school and thoroughly enjoyed passing their knowledge onto their class mates who were unable to join the survey on this occasion.

Thornton Primary We’ve had a really busy term here at Thornton Primary and another very busy one ahead! The school continues to go from strength to strength with the support of the pupils, parents and staff. The children have really shone this term. Our choir have worked hard under Mr Brooke’s tutelage and recently won the Fleetwood Chronicle Cup at the Fleetwood Music and Arts Festival for best school choir. They gave two beautiful performances and were delighted that their hard work paid off. They performed again at our Open Evening, demonstrating to prospective parents what talented children we have here at Thornton Primary School. Our children have also been busy out in the community, taking part in the Rossall Beach clean. The children collected 3 bags of rubbish and found all manner of things washed up on the beach. They are looking forward to taking part in this activity again in November. We enjoyed a special day towards the end of term, celebrating Hallowe’en. The children and staff

dressed as ghosts, ghouls and witches for the day. All the children were invited to enjoy a ghoulish school dinner which included green monster mash and vampire bat biscuits! The day was rounded off by a fabulous Hallowe’en Disco which was organised by our wonderful PTFA. After half term the children returned to a newly transformed infant playground. Over the holidays, a climbing wall, pavilion, sand box, play house and track had miraculously appeared, along with new planting areas and bike shed. This has been a big investment by school as we are dedicated to improving outcomes for our children. Christmas is approaching fast and we are trying something different this year. We hope to put on a Christmas service at Sacred Heart Church with a mix of old and new carols, readings and of course, children dressed as the nativity characters. We will also be holding our annual Christmas Fair on November 26th. The first prize in the raffle will be £100 in cash, and we have requested a visit by Santa, who assures us that even though it’s his busiest time of year, he’ll be here! The fun starts at 6:30 and we hope to see you there!

What does it take to run a marathon? Fitness? Stamina? Endurance? Madness Coupled with the enjoyment of running and a sense of achievement is probably closer to the truth. Witnessing the sheer determination of the runners of the London Marathon earlier this year and the amazing sense of achievement felt by those who completed the 26.2 mile route stirred me into entering it for next year. However running all that way without doing it for a worthy cause seemed such a missed opportunity for so much effort. Therefore the search for a suitable charity ensued.

The Multiple Sclerosis Resource Centre is a proactive and innovative charity, passionately committed to supporting anyone affected by Multiple Sclerosis through access to unbiased information and advice. Their aim is to act as a centre of resources for any affected by MS, whether it be the individual with the diagnosis or their family, friends, employers, work colleagues, or professionals in the healthcare field.

giving money to charity, but supporting them for the following year and enabling them to provide the support and advice which is so badly needed by those affected by MS.

If you would like to support me by making a donation you can do this at http://www.justgiving.com/Tracy-Barlow or alternatively you can send a donation to the c/o Jenny Barlow Great Arley School, Holly Road, Thornton. Thank you

The MSRC is a non government funded charity who rely on the kind donations of the British public in order to continue providing such a fantastic service. I am going to be running the Virgin London Marathon next April in order to raise much needed funds for the charity. The London Marathon is their largest fundraising event of the year and they rely on the funds raised to maintain their services for the following year.

I ran the Paris half marathon earlier on this year in aid of Red Marsh school mini bus appeal and raised over ÂŁ500 towards their cause. Knowing that the money I raised went to a good cause and really made a difference made the whole experience even more worthwhile and even more of a sense of achievement. I would like to take this opportunity to ask you if you would be kind enough to make a donation to my cause. I realise that in the current financial climate funds are few and far between for most of us. However this applies to the charities as well. By donating to my fundraising you will not just simply be

Rossall Beach Clean This morning, Monday 4th October, children representing the School Council from Thornton Primary School joined a group of Rossall Beach residents and volunteers in a beach clean. The children, aged between 7 and 11, donned wellys and reflective vests as they collected three large bags of flotsam from the beach. They were accompanied by Headteacher Mrs Stephanie Reeves and Teaching Assistant Mrs Tracey Barnes. The beach clean was organised by Rossall Beach Residents Association and the clean up was preceded by a safety talk from one of the Wyre Countryside Rangers, who explained the importance of the event, both to the environment and the appearance of the area. Mrs Barnes explained that she had suggested the idea of representatives from Thornton Primary School helping out with the beach clean, as she believed that it would be an interesting and educational activity for the children. “When I suggested it to Mrs Reeves”, she explained, “the idea was seized upon as a great way for the children to learn about the impact that we are having on our environment. It was shocking to see just how much rubbish was collected from such a short stretch of beach.” She continued, “It was amazing the range of things that we collected! We expected to find discarded drinks bottles and cans, but the children also retrieved various unexpected items including a shoe, a car mud flap and numerous children’s dummies!” “The highlight of the beach clean for the children,” she explained, “was probably finding two large fish on the beach. The children debated whether they were fish or baby sharks, before one of the members of the Resident’s Association identified them as being Dogfish – actually members of the shark family!” During the beach clean, hundreds of tiny plastic tubes were collected. It was explained by the Ranger that these were from cotton buds, such as are bought for cosmetic use or ear cleaning. Although many of these products use rolled paper with small wads of cotton at either end, which being natural products are more biodegradable, many are still produced using plastic rods. These are frequently disposed of by ‘flushing them away’ with the result being that they are discharged into the

sea and are both unsightly when they are washed up on the beach as well as being potentially dangerous to marine life if they are swallowed. Mrs Reeves explained that the children were appalled at the numbers of cotton bud tubes found and felt that ‘more environmentally friendly materials’ should be used. She feels that the children’s views should be encouraged and nurtured and is intending to promote a school project where the children can produce posters and write letters to the producers of these cotton buds to encourage the use of bio-degradable materials. Children from the school will be back on the beach in a few weeks, joining the Wyre Countryside Rangers on Fleetwood beach to look at what the tides have brought ashore. Mrs Barnes said, “Activities like this get children out and about, whilst teaching them about our local environment and how to be more responsible citizens. The beaches of the Fylde Coast are often taken for granted. We often see the beach, but completely miss seeing all the fantastic and exiting things that can be found there if only we took the time to look.” Thornton Primary School have previously been involved with ‘Operation Cleansweep’, where children from local primary schools joined together to collect waste from around the Thornton area. The week-long operation was organised by Wyre Community Safety Partnership and resulted in 30 sacks of rubbish being collected from pavements, kerbs and grass verges around the schools!

T.C.F.C September proved to be another good month for the West Lancs Prem new boys with games coming thick and fast in both cup and league competitions. Saturday the 4th saw them travelling back to the venue of their opening day league fixture with an away cup tie versus Tempest United. A 2-2 draw that day was the sign of things to come as a 1-1 draw was played out to full time. With cup rules in place keeper Mark Smith was the hero of the hour saving all three Tempest penalties in the resulting shoot-out to see his side through to the next round. Back to league action on September 11th and Vickerstown CCFC made the long journey to New Bourne Park and returned home the happier of the two teams following a well earned 1 -1 draw . Dalton Utd were hoping to follow suit the week after but unlike their local rivals they could not overcome the home side who won by a 1- 0 margin. Back into cup action on the 25th and Walney Island were the next Cumbrian outfit to be overcome in the Lancashire Amateur Shield. A convincing 6 – 1 home win kept the cup run alive with a 3 round Tie to look forward to.
