ONE - Focus on the lawn Your lawn is ultimately what leads your eye out into the garden, so keeping this well mown, clutter free and healthy is arguably the biggest factor in it retaining a tidy feel. To that end always try to keep borders to a maximum width of around 1.5m. Any wider than this and you may well find their maintenance is taking up a lot of your time. TWO - A path to perfection Sometimes the issues with lawns is that they present such a wide expansive space it can be difficult to know what to decorate them with. The simple answer is to add a winding path to your lawn - not only is this a one-off addition that will add structure and personality to your back garden, it would also require almost zero maintenance each year, helping the space stay tidy and uncomplicated. THREE - Crazy paving? If you want to take this a step further consider paving over larger areas of your garden. in recent years this is a trend that

appears to have subsided somewhat, but that’s not to say it wouldn’t create a nicer, cleaner, easier to maintain garden space. Wood decking has the same effect, as well as adding interesting textures and softer
base on which adults and kids can sit and enjoy their surroundings. FOUR - Evergreens every time Evergreen varieties are very handy for all-year-round foliage and variety; and adding a plentiful array of evergreens to your garden means you can avoid pruning, deadheading, staking, weeding and all those other things involved with perennials that take up valuable time that could be spent on other tasks… such a relaxing!
FIVE - What weeds? If the idea of spending hours picking out a smorgasbord of weeds from your beds doesn’t appeal then wood mulch it’s almost certainly the solution. Not only does it look great, it adds texture and colour too and is a great tool for keeping moisture in the soil, something that will come in handy when the baking sun of the summer months begins to dominate the day. SIX - Take a fake Finally, probably the best low maintenance addition of them all - fake grass. The technology these days means the look is almost as good as having a real lawn, and if you’re brave enough to take it a step further, then fake shrubs can decorate difficult to reach or hard to maintain corners of your garden in a way that will need little maintenance, whilst offering big impact.

Sneak in some extra veg by blitzing a combination of onions, carrots, celery and red pepper in a food processor before frying with the mince.
(Serves four) • 500g white basmati rice • 400g minced beef • 400g tin of red kidney beans • 400g tin chopped tomatoes • 1tbsp ground cumin • 2tsp smoked paprika • 1tsp dried red chilli flakes
Super Speedy Chilli Introduction
There’s nothing quite like the succulent smokiness of a chilli con carne that’s been slow-simmered for hours; but for those times when you want a chilli in a hurry, this ingenious cheat will give you all the depth and flavour in less than 30 minutes.
Method 1. Pour 750ml of water into a saucepan with the rice and a pinch of salt, bring to a boil before lowering to a simmer with the lid on. Next, heat a tablespoon of vegetable oil in a wide, non-stick pan, add the beef and cook until browned. Meanwhile, drain and rinse the red kidney beans and set aside. 2. Add the cumin, smoked paprika and chilli flakes and 28cook for a minute until fragrant, L CAL before adding the tinned
tomatoes, stock cube, chipotle paste and 100ml of cold water. Add your rinsed kidney beans and bring the chilli to a boil, cooking for a further two minutes until the meat is cooked and all is piping hot.

Swap out the beef mince for Quorn mince and use a vegetable instead of beef – ideal for a meat-free Monday dinner! • Chilli is a great meal to batch cook and can be stored easily stored in one-person portions in the freezer without the rice. For organised storage, pour your chilli in to labelled freezer bags and freeze flat before turning sideways in the drawer.

rontage Finally Revealed at Fleetwood Museum What started as a simple redecoration project at the end of 2018 become an exciting project to reveal the original splendour of Fleetwood’s former Custom House. After the Museum Trust took over the building from Lancashire County Council in April 2018, we started work to redecorate the front. Large areas of waterproof coatings started coming off, revealing years of trapped water which had shown as damp patches inside the building and extensive cracking. We carried out extensive tests, working with Wyre’s conservation officer and specialists in historic roofing and stonework. Under ten layers of paint coatings, the original historic render could be glimpsed, as first applied in 1837. All the window surrounds, entrance columns and highlevel parapets are in the familiar stone of the nearby North Euston Hotel. Conservation specialists carefully removed the modern paint coatings to reveal the original render. This was then surveyed to identify numerous areas requiring repair. After these repairs, the final stage was to apply a conservation grade system of paint coatings. This system, ideal for coastal locations, provides a water-

repellent layer whilst also allowing the building to breath, without hiding original features. It has been a long journey to get here, but we were determined to do things in the right way. We have undertaken vital repairs to the front and made it watertight, but the project has done much more - it has allowed us to reveal many original features that have been hidden for decades and return the building to its original Georgian era elegance. We are delighted with the finished appearance – and hope you are too! Keep a look out on our website for announcements about the planned reopening of the museum – under government plans, museums can reopen from 17th May. Our new exhibition for 2021 celebrates Fleetwood women and is called “This Lass Can: Stories of Fleetwood Women”. Our 'Fisherman's Friend' exhibition is also on display for another year. .................................................................

leetwood Museum is housed in the oldest used building in the town, built in the mid 1830s, Grade 2 listed and designed by Decimus Burton. Having only been open for 10 weeks last year we are looking forward to opening for the 2021 season on Tuesday 18th May working along with Government guidelines. Our opening hours will be Tuesday - Saturday weekly 10.30am - 4pm,
Due to our short season last year we are continuing with our Fisherman's Friend 'Take a Deep Breath' exhibition, sponsored by Lofthouses of Fleetwood, which proved very popular. Also on view in our deep sea gallery are some artefacts from Fleetwood's heritage trawler, 'Jacinta' which has recently been scrapped. Volunteers give their time to help at the museum. We are looking for ex-trawlermen to act as guides in our deep-sea gallery. If you are interested, please contact the museum. There is a small entrance charge £3.00 Adults, £2.00 concessions and free admission for children up to 16 years of age. Unfortunately, due to steps and stairs, the museum building is not accessible to people with mobility difficulties. Our shop, within the reception area, has numerous local interest books on sale, Fleetwood postcards, children's pocket money toys and unusual gifts. Why not pop in to look round? We hope to offer a limited service from the cafe subject to guidelines. There is no entrance charge just to use the cafe or look round the museum shop. Unfortunately, due to Covid, we will not be holding Children's craft sessions or talks until it is safe to do so. Our second-hand bookshop, next to the museum will be open Tuesday. Thursday, Friday & Saturday 10.30am - 3.30pm, also Wednesday afternoons 1.15pm - 3.30pm. We have hundreds of books, fiction and non-fiction priced at 50p each. Children's books are only 10p each.

Trinity Hospice to open two new charity shops on Fylde coast Retail staff at Trinity Hospice have been busy preparing for the reopening of their shops on the high street, and the grand opening of two new shops for the Fylde coast. The hospice opened the doors to its new furniture shop on Dock Street, Fleetwood on Monday 12th April. Retail Manager Paul Guest said: “As always, the support we have seen by those in our community is just phenomenal. “We made sure we created a safe outdoors environment for people to make their donations, and we were amazed at how many people came with their goodquality items.
