Festive lights raise thousands for local hospice
£5,916 RAISED
Neighbours on a Thornton close have raised nearly £6,000 for their local adults and children’s hospice with a spectacular display of Christmas lights, attracting visitors from around the resort and as far afield as Manchester. Residents of Borage Close – renamed Christmas Close during the festive season – held their usual Christmas lights display to bid farewell to the challenges of 2020, supporting Trinity Hospice and Brian House Children’s Hospice. But none could have imagined just how successful their illuminated extravaganza would be. Borage Close resident Debbie Bamber said: “Our Christmas lights display is just something we’ve always done, and in 2020 we decided to do it to support a local charity. We all agreed on Trinity and Brian House, as it’s a charity close to a lot of our hearts. “We raised a total of £5,916. That’s just incredible!” As well as lights, the street was adorned with collection buckets, which residents were emptying every half an hour. Even on Christmas Eve, Borage Close raised £582 as families gathered – socially distanced – to ring bells at 6pm to cheer on Father Christmas. “It was probably the best Christmas Eve we’ve ever had,” Debbie said.

“We’ve all really enjoyed seeing everyone come to our street. We’ve not been able to see our friends and families, or go to Christmas parties, so it was really nice to see so many people from a distance, and to see the joy that it has brought.” Debbie said the success of the street’s charity Christmas lights display was down to the community spirit in Borage Close. She added: “We’ve all known each other for years; we all help each other out. We all get on so well, which shows when we’ve all come together like this.” Trinity and Brian House’s Head of Fundraising, Linzi Warburton, said: “Each night we saw posts on social media of families visiting Borage Close, and could see how much of a success it was going to be. “The amazing residents of Borage Close have put on such a wonderful display, spreading joy to those who came to see it, and raising much needed funds for our hospice. We are so grateful to everyone on Borage Close, as well as all who went to visit and made a donation so that we can reach everyone who needs our care on the Fylde coast.”

Protecting homes and businesses along Wyre’s coastline Wyre Council has recently submitted a planning application for phase one of their Beach Management Scheme, which will protect 11,000 homes and businesses along the coastline and beyond. Councillor Roger Berry, Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhood Services and Community Safety at Wyre Council explains, “This project involves a significant investment of £40 million which will benefit Cleveleys and the surrounding area by further protecting properties from flooding. I’m delighted that we’ve made this first planning application and we look forward to starting work as soon as we can. The first phase of the Beach Management Scheme involves placing layers of rock armour underneath the beach at the base of the sea wall to protect existing defences from scour and undermining should beach levels drop during a storm. Once complete, this work will not be visible. It will cover an 883 metre length of sea defences between Café Cove at Cleveleys and the southern end of Rossall School grounds, known locally as The Tank Traps. Work is planned to start in May 2021 and be complete by Christmas 2021. The second phase of the Beach Management Scheme will start once this phase is finished and will take three years to complete. It involves

constructing rock armour groynes to help build a high stable beach which will in turn reduce wave height and energy and the risk of overtopping and damage to the sea defences. It will span the coastline from Kingsway to Fleetwood and will be subject to a separate planning application due to be submitted later in the year. Councillor Berry continues, “Part of our planning application involves the use of an area of Jubilee Gardens as our site compound and for storage. This is still at application stage however if approved we want to reassure residents and businesses that we will do everything we can to keep disruption to a minimum. “We have seen that people have raised concerns about the play area and the car park. However, if we get the go ahead we will only be occupying a part of the car park. The car park will be closed during the week but it will still be open at the weekends. “We will be using a part of the central grassed area but there will still be a significant area of green space that’s kept free to use. The new play equipment is going to be relocated within the park and will be open for use throughout, as will the skate park and the rest of the play areas.

The highway will not be closed, other than for a short period whilst we carry out strengthening works to the highway for the road crossing. “We have already consulted with local stakeholders including residents and businesses in the area and we will continue to keep them informed as the scheme progresses. New play equipment The playground at Memorial Park in Fleetwood is set to be improved thanks to a grant of £29,500 from the Lancashire Environment Fund, a donation of £5212 from the Friends of Memorial Park and funding of £2788 from Wyre Council. Wyre Council will lead on the project, which will see the existing climbing frame replaced, a new inclusive multi-unit added and the existing playground roundabout replaced with an inclusive roundabout suitable for all abilities. This bespoke play equipment has been created to be dynamic, offer a high level of challenge and provides opportunities for sliding, climbing, swinging, rotating, balancing, traversing, spinning, twisting and most of all fun. The inclusive equipment has been designed with wheelchair users in mind so that everyone can join in. Ready, steady, census The decennial census is almost upon us. Households across Lancashire will soon be asked to take part in the nationwide survey of housing and the population. It has been carried out every decade since 1801, with the exception of 1941. Information from the digital-first census will help decide how services are planned and funded in your local area. This could mean things like doctors’ surgeries, housing or new bus routes. Households will receive a letter with a unique access code in the post, allowing them to complete their questionnaire online. Paper questionnaires will be available on request. Your body is made up of millions of tiny cells.
2. Viruses can't survive outside the body for long, so they try to get into our cells.

Local News New weight management programme launched in Wyre Wyre Council has been awarded funding by Lancashire County Council’s Public Health department to provide an adult weight management plan for people classed as overweight or obese in Wyre. The council is delighted to be working alongside Slimming World to provide access to a 12 week funded programme starting from 1 February 2021 offering support for people referred by their GP. The programme will be available to those who live in Wyre or are registered with a GP in the borough who have a body mass index of 30 – 39.9, you can calculate your BMI online at https://www.nhs.uk/ live-well/healthy-weight/bmicalculator/. For the first year, the 12 week programmes will be fully funded and after that the initiative will continue to be offered to those referred at a greatly reduced rate. Slimming World is a wellestablished organisation with an effective evidence based programme focusing on nutrition, physical activity and behaviour change. Whilst their in-person groups are temporarily suspended due to Covid-19, their
consultants can still offer the same support, friendship and inspiration in a virtual group, which you can attend from the comfort of your home. Councillor Lynne Bowen, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Health and Community at Wyre Council comments, “We are very pleased to be working in partnership with Slimming World to deliver the weight management programme for our residents. 68% of residents in Wyre are classed as overweight or obese and we want to work with Health Professionals to offer a solution. Managing weight is key to reducing other health risks especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. People who are overweight or obese and those at risk from health problems related to being overweight can be referred by their Health professional to the programme. Health professionals will provide all the information needed to get you started with Slimming World, helping you take a positive step towards better health.
