Wyre appoints its new Mayor for 2020/22 Wyre Council has elected Councillor Andrea Kay as its new Mayor for 2020/22 following a meeting of full council on 12 November. Councillor Howard Ballard has also been elected as Deputy Mayor. At the meeting of full council, putting forward the motion to elect Councillor Kay as Mayor, Councillor Rita Amos commented: “Andrea has previously volunteered to help children and young people from deprived backgrounds in Moss Side, Manchester, to try and improve their lives and did this for 10 years. When moving here, she continued to do this.” Councillor Amos continued, “She set up summer classes and helped youngsters with their CVs. She has worked to bring the community together, also setting up the Remembrance Tree for lost relatives in Cleveleys.
Councillor Howard Ballard was also elected as Deputy Mayor of Wyre at the meeting of full council.
“Andrea is also the lead member for children and young people and former Armed Forces champion.
Proposing Councillor Ballard as Deputy Mayor was Councillor Paul Moon, who commented: “Howard is a co-op pioneer, looking after three charities in the local area. I am sure his fundraising skills will be a great asset to the Mayor.”
“Andrea also completed a charity parachute jump and yes, she is looking for a new challenge!” Seconding the motion to elect Councillor Kay was Councillor Alan Vincent, who commented: “I can assure the residents of Wyre that they will get a tireless champion of the people who will be as enthusiastic as they are in support of the many causes that they hold dear.” Councillor Vincent continued: “Not only does she deserve the honour, she is the best suited person, in my view, for the role of Mayor and I have no doubt that she will do it to the best of her ability.”

Councillor Kay has appointed Doherty’s Destiny as her chosen charity for her term as Mayor. Doherty’s Destiny visit schools and other youth based settings to raise awareness of bullying causing mental health issues in young people. The charity was set up by Joanne HargreavesDoherty, after her son James tragically took his own life following bullying on social media. James was just 16 years old. Councillor Kay also intends to support ‘Men’s Sheds’ and Armed Forces Breakfast Clubs during her time as Mayor.

The year is almost over and we would hope that you have all managed to remain healthy, fit and covid free. In the summer we managed to hold 2 very successful picnics, held under the oak tree at church. It protected us from most of the rain! lackpool Council buildings become fully powered by renewable energy
Blackpool Council’s buildings, Illuminations, ancillary services and arms-length organisations have become fully powered by renewable energy as part of plans to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2030. The council’s renewable-backed agreement with EDF will see wind and solar power supply electricity for the vast majority of council buildings, as well as the likes of the Winter Gardens, Sandcastle Waterpark and Blackpool Airport. The agreement also extends to schools and academies.

The move follows Blackpool Council’s declaration of a climate emergency in June 2019 and will assist in meeting the council’s long-term objectives to: Make the council’s activities net-zero carbon by 2030 Achieve 100% clean energy across the council’s full range of functions by 2030 Cllr Jim Hobson, Blackpool Council's Cabinet Member for the Environment and Climate Change, said: "We’re thrilled to be working with EDF, as well as our auxiliary companies and services, to take a step closer to our goal of achieving a cleaner future for Blackpool.

New play equipment installed on Jubilee Gardens following £35k investment Jubilee Gardens in Cleveleys will benefit from £35,000 of improvements thanks to investment from Wyre Council, alongside a grant from the Lancashire Environmental Fund. Installation of the new play equipment began on 12 October. Money from Wyre Council’s capital programme, plus £30,000 from the Lancashire Environmental Fund will be used to give the park a new lease of life. Jubilee Gardens is the largest park in Cleveleys and was opened in 1937 and a friends group for the park was formed in 2016. Public consultations led by the friends group took place in 2016 and 2018 to gauge local opinion and to inform future plans for the park. The new equipment is also thanks to the Friends of Jubilee Gardens who have added additional funding to provide seating to complement the new play equipment. Councillor Simon Bridge, Portfolio Holder for Street Scene, Parks and Open Spaces comments, “Our team have worked hard to secure additional funding for this much loved park in Cleveleys and we are delighted to be able to make these improvements. “We want to give local young people access to high quality recreation equipment whatever their age and this investment will make a real difference to the local community.” Work began on 12 October to install new play equipment at the park. Have your say on Wyre Council’s proposal to create three new urban woodlands in Wyre Wyre Council has committed to planting 25,000 trees as part of their pledge to tackle climate change. To achieve this, the council is working with the Woodland Trust through its ‘MOREwoods’ and ‘MOREhedges’ schemes to create 10 hectares of new native woodland and hedgerows across its open spaces by 2025. This climate focused tree planting will play a vital role in mitigating climate change, as well as protecting and enhancing threatened biodiversity. We must reduce our carbon footprint and the

planting and establishment of healthy trees to sequester carbon are a vital part of this. Trees offer huge benefits for mankind, wildlife and the environment from filtering out air pollution, improving our wellbeing, providing habitat and foraging opportunities for birds, bats and other wildlife, to helping mitigate against flooding. The council has identified three areas suitable for this initiative, but wants to hear from residents their views on the proposals. The three sites identified are: Cottam Hall playing fields, Poulton-le-Fylde Stalmine play fields Great Eccleston playing fields Visit www.wyre.gov.uk/woodlandcreation to have your say.
