POULTON-LE-FYLDE THROUGH TIME

CHRISTINE STOREY Poulton - the town by the pool - is situated in the North West of England in the county of Lancashire. The name is derived from the River Wyre, situated at the bottom of the Breck at Skippool.

In 1842 ‘le-Fylde’ was added to the name when the Penny Post began, to stop local post mistakenly being sent north to another village called Poulton - later to become Poulton-le-Sands; it is now part of Morecombe.

Join Christine Storey on this fascinating visual journey around the town. Using carefully selected old and new images, she shows the changes that have taken place over time. These photographs, along with their informative captions, illustrate a variety of people, trades, buildings, conveyances, customs, professions, processions and above all important events that represent the changing face of a busy market town over the past 100 years.

The Author Christine Storey began her research into the history of Poultonle-Fylde over thirty years ago. Her interest in the past, present and future of Poulton-le-Fylde originally stemmed from her research into her Lewtas ancestors who have lived in the Fylde since the 15th century.

She has written two books on Poulton, Poulton-le-Fylde – A History & Guide and Portrait of Poulton, and has contributed articles to various local history journals. Thanks also to the Wyre Council who supplied us with all the plants, they will not in the future be providing this service and we will have to buy our plants privately, this means we will have to have more fund raising events to pay for these. We are indebted to the Shovels Fun Run committee who have kindly donated £200 to our cause.
