MILITARIA ANTIQUES - WHERE SO MANY ITEMS TELL A STORY All over the UK, in many auction houses, there is a Militaria section, where enthusiastic collectors compete to add to their collections. The items on offer are wide ranging, with such things swords used in ancient battles, muskets, rifles, bayonets and pistols, uniforms and badges, naval equipment and much more. However it is the medals that tell a story of amazing bravery, courage and sacrifices made by so many members of our armed forces, not only in the two great wars, but in other conflicts around the world and even now in Afghanistan.

You only have to read the brief notes of lot 900, which sold in auction on the 3rd May 2012 – to see how three brothers gave their all for our country in the First World War – this being a wonderful story of how each of them, two in the Army and one in the Navy, who served so bravely along with so many others.

There are many different collectables in Militaria - for instance, shown here the boxed Kreigsmarin Naval U-Boat Sextant from the 1939-45 Second World War and an Army Colt Revolver (de-activated of course!) and so on. It really is a most interesting collecting area and extremely popular in the UK. Citation reads: “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty for a long period of active service as battalion(s) medical oficers orderly, when with great bravery and skill he attended wounded under the most heavy shellfire and the worst conditions of mud, with absolute disregard for personal fatigue and safety.” For Gallentry in the field - next higher, the Victoria Cross.

which seems a long way off and will roll around!

Local people and visitors lined the streets of Poulton on a fine Saturday 2nd June for the Diamond Jubilee Gala, as the hour long procession wove its way along an extended route. It was a great day of celebration for everyone, as the whole town turned red, white and blue for the event, that was a tribute to all the hard work that had gone into it.

In July, the celebrations continue, and Carleton Community Music are holding their next big event on Tuesday 3rd, Hodgson School are staging Joseph on 12, 13 and 14 July, and of course Poulton Library will be holding events as usual throughout the month.

Helen Garlick of Freckleton came to show us a range of styles from “Get Ahead Hats” we had all ‘Dressed to Impress’ and were very pleased and excited to be able to try on similar hats that Kate Middleton [ The Duchess of Cambridge ] & her family and friends choose to wear, 54 of their creations were worn at the Royal Wedding.

Helen a university graduate with a lifetime’s experience of buying clothes for well known retailers all over the world settled down to being a farmers wife and after producing children decided that this was not enough and contacted a couple of other ex graduates they started a farmer’s wives cooperative. They now have five milliners [including Peter Whiteley] working full time for them [one of whom Phillip Somerville of Harrogate did hats for our Queen] and eighteen outlets or showrooms plus of course a website, all of this does not come cheap between £60 to £600, but you can hire hats a lot cheaper from them.

Helen advised us that to get the best hat for an occasion when you try hats on do wear your chosen outfit, plus the shoes and have your hair and makeup done.

The vote of thanks was given by Maureen Hayden who also won the competition for the best hat,

second was Linda Musgrove and third was Eleanor Clarke wearing a fetching Union Jack decorated bowler!

Our evening was rounded off by a Jacobs Join Supper, a toast to the Queen and a rousing chorus of Land of Hope and Glory.

• Wyre Archaeology Group We offer a rare opportunity for anyone with an interest in the history of the Wyre and Fylde area to get hands on experience of practical archaeology. In past seasons we have excavated a Roman Road in Stalmine, an 18 Century cottage, a mediaeval water mill, a possible Iron Age settlement in Thornton and a Roman site in Kirkham.

WAG is open to people of all ages and has previously provided practical experience for students going on to study for degrees in Archaeology. We usually have a ‘big dig’ weekend in summer and we’re keen to have new digging members but you’d be welcome whatever skill you might be able to bring and whatever level.

We’re affiliated to the Council for British Archaeology and have strong links with local professionals in the field. A meeting held at Farmer Parr’s in Thornton on the 3rd Wednesday of each month, starting at 7.00pm, keeps everyone informed of activities and there are occasional guest speakers.
