Postcard from Poulton You can’t blame me for once again starting by talking about the weather, and my sympathy goes out to all the people who have organised events this ‘summer’ to have them cancelled. The great sense of community spirit that exists on the Fylde Coast is one thing that I really like about the place, and it’s a shame that months of planning have been a washout. Even the Olympic Torch blew out briefly – and as it made its way through Wyre some of the route had to be changed because of the dangerous weather. Carleton Community Music have rescheduled their Festival for September because the school field was waterlogged, but Poulton Forum have kept to schedule because their meetings are held indoors! The next one is on Tuesday 21 August so if you care about what happens in your area make sure that you go along.
Stanley Park in September, there’s the second Poulton Beer Festival in August, along with other events which you can find out about on the new Events Calendar on the Visit Poulton website. Follow it for meetings, events, entertainment and more, from all over the Fylde Coast. Jean Prowse entertained and educated us into the art of Flower Arranging at our monthly meeting in July.
Mon 8th Aug: Monthly Meeting 7.30p.m. At the URC Church Hall is a Members Evening with a Surprise Guest Speaker.
First choose your container, think of a colour scheme, know exactly how many flowers you will need and collect foliage from your garden if possible. Soak flowers for 24 hours and shiny foliage can be immersed in water, downy type and silver foliage must be dry, cut the stems and score the ends before inserting into wet oasis. Jean decorated a pink basket with a triangle shaped arrangement using Blue Hosta leaves, pink peonies and Fair Trade Roses [as they last the longest], alstromelias and finished off with gysophila. Next was a Christmas Table decoration in an oblong dish with red candles supported with cocktail sticks wrapped around with sellotape, [hint keep table decorations low so that people can see and talk across the table] put foliage in first and then when flowers go in you do not knock their heads off, Jean finished this off with flower glue and sprinkled coloured glitter on the leaves. Two more arrangements were made with a mix of flowers. These were all raffled off. Christine Cardwell gave the vote of thanks to Jean.

WYRE IN BLOOM – HAMBLETON – BEST KEPT VILLAGE Judging day for Wyre in Bloom was very wet but both judges commented that we had done well to keep on top of the grass cutting and weeding and dead heading at all the plots in spite of the awful summer weather we have had. They both liked the Bob Williamson Park and noted that the trees had been cut back around the pond and how much better it looked than last year, “this is how it should look” was the comment. They both thoroughly enjoyed their visits to four private gardens our thanks go to Hetty Poole at 75, Rydal Ave., Bob Webb at “Jalna” Church Lane, and Nigel Lingard at Wyre Villa, Market Street and Lynne and Derek Newton at “Thistlefield” Carr Lane for allowing us to look round their gardens.
The Best Kept Village competition is still ongoing and we would like to thank everyone for keeping up the rubbish clearing, it makes such a difference to our everyday life to see litter free streets and verges.
