Thornton Cleveleys Primary School

On Monday 1st October the children and staff from Thornton Primary School joined locals from Rossall Beach Residents and Community Group to help clean up Rossall beach.

Altogether a total of 21 bags of rubbish weighing 65 kilos were collected together with a £10 note and about 10 large items.

All this rubbish was collected in 1 hour before heavy rains arrived and the beach clean had to be abandoned.

The children really look forward to attending the beach cleans and helping to look after their local beaches. ..................................................................................................

‘Diary of a local Councillor’ Paul Galley is a Councillor for Anchorsholme in Blackpool and each month he writes a weekly diary of what he has been up to.

Monday: One of the things I love about being a Councillor is the fact I’m always doing and learning new things and today I had the pleasure of attending the blessing of the newly refurbished school building at St Teresa’s Primary School. It was a lovely service and I got to meet a Bishop, which is first time I’ve met one and he was a lovely man, very friendly.

The school looks great and the work done on it will be enjoyed by thousands of children in the years to come, a really good investment for the future. In the evening I attended a meeting about Anchorsholme park and our plans for the future.

Tuesday: Today I met with two different residents of Anchorsholme, who are growing increasingly concerned about the weather and how the heavy rain fall seems to be flooding parts of Anchorsholme. I was delighted to say the Council backed us up brilliantly and immediately repaired and raised a pavement near Eastpines shops and sorted the drain out so that water now has somewhere to go when it rains. If you know of any gutters or drains that are blocked on the roads or public areas please do contact me, it’s so important that where there is a drain or gutter it’s clear and free to take the water.

Wednesday: In the morning I called the bingo at our bingo club at St Teresa’s, which is always great fun and a good laugh and is enjoyed by everyone that comes. I want to take this opportunity to mention another club that takes place at the same time as my bingo club and that is the Over 60 Tea and Coffee Club at Anchorsholme Methodist Church. The club

meets every Wednesday from 10.15am and I know alot of the people who attend and you will be made very welcome. In the evening I went to our local PACT meeting where we discussed local crime issues. Our local community police officer Dave Clark will be retiring soon and I’m sure many local people will miss him. We will find out who will be replacing him very soon and I’ll make a point of introducing him or her as soon as I meet them.

Thursday: I spent the day working at my recruitment business before holding my surgery in the evening. I hold my monthly surgery at All Saints Church on the first Thursday of every month from 6pm to 7pm. I was very proud tonight as I had three people attend, which is a record. I’m determined that even if no one comes that the surgery will be there, it’s another way of connecting with people and helping fix problems.

Friday: Had a lovely day today. I worked on my recruitment business in the morning and then went to see my friends at the over 50’s Bingo Club at Sevenoaks Community Centre in the afternoon. They always make me so welcome.

In the evening I had a meeting with a number of residents about a planning issue which went well.

Saturday: In the morning I was working in East Pines Park with some very hard working volunteers (I would be lost without them). We cleaned the shed out which had suffered from flooding and in the afternoon we planned our Daffodil planting day which will be on November 1st from 10.30am. We have ordered 4000 Daffodil bulbs and if you would like to come down to the park and help us plant them you would be very welcome. We want to get every child in the area to plant a bulb so during half term if you would like to get involved please come down you will be made very welcome and will help Anchorsholme become the garden of Blackpool which is our vision for it.

Thornton Cleveleys RUFC 50

The season is well underway at ThorntonCleveleys RUFC and the teams have had mixed fortunes during the start of the new campaign. The 1st team kicked their season off with a win at home to Ashton-UnderLyne but have been narrowly beaten in their last two games, each lost by just 2 points and the lads know these were games they could have won, if they hadn’t made a number of basic errors. It’s not all doom and gloom though as the team are learning from their mistakes and plan to make amends against their next opposition; Newton-LeWillows. The 1sts sit 7th in the table after 3 games played.

The 1sts are still alive in the cup, they won their first round match up, away to Old Bedians, in terrible conditions and look forward to their next fixture, hoping to get the win and progress further in the competition.

The 2nd team have had a great start to the season, they have played 4 games and only came unstuck once when they were defeated away to Tyldesley 13 - 10. Their 3 wins came against; Bolton, Carnforth and local rivals Fleetwood. The 2nd team’s next fixture sees Blackpool take the short journey to Thornton-Cleveleys RUFC to play a mouthwatering encounter, both teams are looking to be promotion hopefuls so this should be an exciting match up.

• Little Thornton Womens Institute The Autumn Council Meeting at Preston was well attended with members from all over Lancashire. The 3 speakers were said by some to be the best they had ever heard, being informative and very funny, Jane Robinson, author of the history of The W.I. in England, Stephanie Fort, N.F.W.I. Treasurer, and Mathew Collins, T.V. travel consultant.
