‘Diary of a local Councillor’ Paul Galley is a Councillor for Anchorsholme in Blackpool and each month he writes a weekly diary of what he has been up to.

Monday: The week started on a rather annoying front, when we realised that our phone line was down. I was to later find out that we were not alone and many businesses and the users of the Vitaline service were without a phone for most of the week. Thankfully by Monday afternoon I had managed to divert my incoming calls to my mobile so I do apologise to anyone that tried to call me today and couldn’t get through.

Tuesday: Today Councillor Williams and I attended a meeting about the provision of a CCTV camera facility in Anchorsholme.

Currently there is one CCTV camera and that is situated near Anchorsholme Primary School and Eastpines Park. We are looking at ways of using new wireless technology to improve the CCTV coverage in Anchorsholme.

Wednesday: In the morning I hosted my weekly bingo club at St Teresa’s and was excited to tell the bingo members that they will judge our Christmas card competition that Cllr Williams and I have set up in conjunction with St Teresa’s Primary School. The school children will design several Christmas cards and the winning design will be used as our Christmas card that we will get out to 3500 households in Anchorsholme (my girlfriend and I will be delivering them in the first couple of weeks in December so if you see me delivering do say hello).

Thursday: Although this morning was very wet, the Friends of Eastpines Park and myself held a really important event, it was the first of our Daffodil bulb planting days in the park. I want to take this chance to say a huge thank you to everyone that turned up to help plant the bulbs in what was very wet weather. We had

so much fun and local children and the Friends members planted over 1,000 bulbs in the park.

The weather hasn’t been kind to us this year but Anchorsholme owes the members of the Friends Group a big thank you for the effort they have put in to improving the park. If all goes to plan you should see lots of yellow flowers on the edges of Eastpines park come the spring.

Friday: Today couldn’t get any better after my phone line was finally restored and I could make a phone call again. In the evening my girlfriend and I attended the annual Methodists Church Quiz Night which is held to raise funds for repairs for the church. We had a fun evening, the food was brilliant and company was great. Everyone worked so hard providing the meal, prizes for raffles and questions for the quiz and deserve a massive thank you for working so hard on putting the event on. This year the quiz raised £450 which is needed to fund repairs in the church.

Saturday: This morning I collected some daffodil bulbs that were kindly donated by Willows florist on Anchorsholme Lane. After collecting the bulbs I met up with a resident who is increasingly concerned about blocked drains. Again if you know of any blocked gutters or grills on the roads in Anchorsholme please let me know (I’m currently working on one issue about flooding on the path between Eastpines Drive and Luton Road). I’m on a mission to get every gutter and grill unblocked by the winter. If you know of any please do call me on 01253 826679 Sunday: Today my girlfriend and I spent the morning planting daffodil bulbs around the ‘Welcome to Anchorsholme’ sign on Anchorsholme Lane and Luton Road. The weather was lovely and we planted around 50 Daffodil bulbs around the “Welcome Sign” and by the Escalonia’s along the wall. If all goes to plan this area will look lovely in the spring and send a message out that Anchorsholme is a place that is loved and cared for.

Thornton Cleveleys RUFC

As the season heads towards the mid-way point and the inevitable Winter postponements, both Thornton-Cleveleys teams are in good positions in their respective leagues.

The 1st team currently sit top of the table after 8 games played, with 6 wins and 2 narrow losses. The key during this period has been that they have managed to grab 7 out of 8 possible bonus points available; 5 coming from scoring four or more tries in a fixture and 2 more from staying within 7 points of the opposition when at the end of a defeat. The 1st team’s most recent games were against Crosby St Mary’s, Colne and Nelson and Clitheroe. The 1sts have only conceded a total of 5 points from these three games, the deficit coming from a try against Crosby, in a 56 - 5 win. The lads then travelled to Colne where they were convincing victors, 0 - 47. Finally they defeated bottom of the league Clitheroe 20 - 0, surprisingly this was one of the toughest games of the campaign so far and it is anyone’s guess how Clitheroe are still rooted to the bottom of the table.

The 1st team’s next match is in the cup quarter - final, away to Birchfield RUFC. Good luck for the game guys!

The 2nd team are looking to be league contenders in their league too, after 8 games they are sat in 3rd place and hope to keep pushing for a promotion place. Their last 3

games have consisted of two wins and a loss.

The 2nds were beaten away from home by top of the league Leigh, in a hard fought match, 25 - 10 but the lads responded well by getting two wins on the bounce; first beating Clitheroe 2’s at home 40 - 14 and then coming on top, away at Burnley, 7 - 20.

The 2nd team take on Chorley 3’s, away, in their cup competition and will put in every effort to progress to the next round. Bring the win home fellas!

Training at Thornton-Cleveleys RUFC is on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Tuesday’s sessions are taken at Blackpool and the Fylde College on the Astroturf, 7.30pm - 8.30pm and Wednesdays sessions are at our home, Thornton YMCA from 6.45pm onwards.
