Welcome to our JAN/FEB edition of LINK-Magazine.

Happy New Year from all of us at LINK-Magazine but by the time you’re reading this, many of you may have already broken their New Year resolutions but not here at LINK. We have changed our distribution so we now come out last week in the month so we can cover all the following months’ events. We have also started working on our new website which will be coming live in February with many new features and advertising options.

Postcard from Cleveleys ‘I’m dreaming of a white Christmas...’ We had one on the prom at Cleveleys, when we made worldwide news with the foam on 28 December! A good 4’ depth of it washed up along the road and seafront, making BBC and Granada news and websites all around the world, and drawing people in to watch and take video. Not quite as big a tourist attraction as Riverdance, but certainly impressive!

Day with their invite to lunch at Cleveleys Park Methodist Church. With volunteers helping, a chef cooking and entertainment thrown in, it was a day to remember.

The New Year started with the high winds that Cleveleys is famous for, and now local businesses will be turning their hand to getting organised for the start of a new season which will roll quickly round.

Ice Hockey games have started at SubZero Ice Arena, now that the safety nets are in place, and you can catch a game every Saturday with either a league or recreational team set to play each week. And of course, with Dancing on Ice back on our screens it might give you the Cllr Andrea Kay and Rev Michael bug to take up this new hobby Payne also impressed many of and get yourself fit for the new the elderly people on Christmas year into the bargain!

Thornton Cleveleys RUFC 36

Thornton-Cleveleys RUFC have gone from strength to strength this season and the wet winter we all endured may have been a blessing in disguise.

Previous seasons have seen a number of games cancelled over Christmas and New Year but all fixtures were fulfilled this time around and the lads have kept up their winning streak.

The 2nd team continue to plod along nicely in Division 5 North. There 3 most recent fixtures were played at home and the 2nds used this to their advantage, they produced a win against local rivals Preston Grasshoppers 22 - 5 and defeated Leigh 33 -5. Their only loss coming against a travelling Clitheroe side 19 - 35, a surprise considering the 2nds had beaten them twice away previously in the season, The 1st team have managed to stretch their unbeaten it may have only been a coincidence that Clitheroe’s first team didn’t have a game that day... run to a massive 17 games! Thornton Primary School

HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM EVERYONE AT THORNTON PRIMARY SCHOOL! 2012 has got off to a flying start at Thornton Primary with children from Years 4, 5 and 6 heading off for a residential week in the Lake District and the school choir starting their rehearsals for the Sing Up Thornton event at The Little Theatre on February 10th. We also started the new year by welcoming our new headteacher, Mrs. Rachel Clements.

In November, the school held its first Remembrance Service. The staff and children were delighted to welcome ex-pupil Senior Aircraftsman Technician Neil Gibbons and his family to the service. Since leaving Thornton Primary School seventeen years ago, Neil has joined the RAF and spent time in Iraq, Afghanistan and the Falkland Islands. He is now based at RAF Brize Norton, Oxfordshire. Everyone at Thornton Primary would like to thank Neil and his family for making our first Remembrance Service a very special occasion.

In fact it has been a very busy and successful school year so far. It all began in September at the Fleetwood Music and Arts festival when the children from Key Stage 2 won three awards (a joint third place awarded to the choir and first place awarded to our samba band and choral speakers)

December is always a busy and exciting time at Thornton Primary. Our carol service took place at Wignall Methodist Church and on the following day all of the children went to The Grand Theatre, Blackpool to watch the pantomime. Once again the school choir was invited to sing at The Teal Close Day Centre. This was our final concert of 2011. On the last day of term we said goodbye Our Harvest Festival in October was taken by Reverend Mark Hammond from Wignall Methodist and thank you to our headteacher Mrs. Stephanie Church. A representative from the Salvation Army Reeves. We wish her every success at Garstang joined us to accept the donations of food from the Primary School children.

What a truly wonderful start to the new academic year that Manor Beach Primary School has had!

We have had three awards this term which we are truly delighted with.

The first of these awards is the Primary Quality Mark. This is a national award which recognises the school’s good provision, practice and performance in respect of the ‘basic skills’ of literacy and numeracy. It recognises the school’s commitment to continuous improvement to raise standards and to give the children at Manor Beach Primary School a good education. We have worked so hard over the last five years to raise standards and this award recognises this.

The second award that we are really proud of is The Leading Parent Partnership Award. Once again this is a national award that recognises the school’s commitment to invest in parents and carers to raise the achievement of pupils. Manor Beach Primary School strongly believes that the children get the best outcomes from education when there is an effective partnership between home and school. We have worked really hard to develop these effective partnerships with our parents.

The final event that happened last term is the visit to school by an Ofsted Inspection team in November 2011. The Inspection proved to be a very positive experience for us and we were judged to be a ‘good’ school. We were really delighted about this as it recognised the huge steps forward we had made since the last Inspection when we were judged to be satisfactory. What really pleased us at this Inspection was that we were judged to be ‘outstanding’ in the extent to which pupils contribute to the school and wider community.
