Little Marton Windmill

Everyone who lives on or visits the Fylde will have seen Little Marton Windmill. Located on the A583 main road, at the end of the M55 it’s position is second only to Lytham Windmill for prominence.

Few people are aware however that the mill is a Grade II listed building, and a memorial to Allen Clarke, who was a popular local author of books and numerous local newspaper articles.

The present construction dates from 1838 and incorporates bricks reused from the earlier mill.

The mill operated for most of a century, and towards the end of its working life in 1922 the land and mill were purchased from the Clifton estate by Cornelius Bagot.

Milling finally stopped in 1928. A few years later, Cornelius became Chairman of C & S Brewery Ltd. and for many years the mill displayed the company name.

When local author and historian Charles Allen Clarke died, Cornelius gave Little Marton Windmill to the Allen Clarke Memorial Fund as a permanent monument. A plaque commemorating the fact was placed on the mill, and is now displayed inside.

In 1950, as funds for maintenance were depleted, the trust handed the mill to Blackpool Corporation.

For a short period the mill was leased to the Shepherd family who used it as a workshop for manufacturing poultry appliances. Later it was a meeting place for

a local Scout group, (St Wilfred’s), who leased it at a peppercorn rent. Some of our recent visitors to the mill recall being in there in those days.

Repairs to the structure of the mill were carried out in the 1960’s, and more extensively in 1986, when the cap was completely rebuilt and much internal woodwork was renewed.

In the last three years, The Friends of Little Marton Windmill group has been formed, largely at the instigation of Shirley Mathews, B.A. (Hons), who is Allen Clarke’s granddaughter.

The Friends of Little Marton Windmill, working in cooperation with Blackpool Council are now facilitating the opening of the mill to the public, and making its educational potential available to local schools and interested groups.

In addition to hosting open days at the mill, the Friends hold regular social meetings at the nearby Tarnside Community centre, with speakers on a variety of local topics.
