Postcard from Blackpool Your mind might be on Christmas and the festive season, but along the Fylde Coast the tide continues to come in and out twice every day – bringing a whole lot of debris with it.

The debris is not just unsightly, it’s also a serious threat to wildlife which lives on the beaches and in our seas. It’s also a marker of a much more serious problem, and the sanitary waste which washes up stems from overflows from the sewage system.

At times of heavy rainfall, and let’s face it we’ve had more than our fair share, there’s too great a volume of water at once for the system to cope. It only takes blockages with fats, rags and things that shouldn’t go down the drain, and the sewage system overflows into watercourses. That might be wrong, but it would be really wrong for it to flood our streets and homes.

ROLEX…WHAT A DIFFERENCE A NAME MAKES ! !

Hans Wilsdorf and his brother-in-law, Alfred Davis, founded Wilsdorf and Davis, the company that would eventually become Rolex SA, in London, England in 1905 Wilsdorf and Davis’ main business at the time was importing Hermann Aegler’s Swiss movements to England and placing them in quality watch cases made by Dennison and others. These early wristwatches were sold to jewellers, who then put their own names on the dial. The earliest watches from Wilsdorf and Davis were usually hallmarked “W&D” inside the caseback.

In 1908, Wilsdorf registered the trademark “Rolex” and opened an office in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland.

The company name “Rolex” was registered on 15 November 1915. The book The Best of Time: Rolex Wristwatches: An Unauthorized History by Jeffrey P. Hess and James Dowling says that the name was just made up. One story, never confirmed by Wilsdorf, is that the name came from the French phrase horlogerie exquise, meaning “exquisite clockwork.”

There can be no better example of Victorian enterprise than the amazing success story of Blackpool, whose pioneering spirit embodied all the unflagging, indomitable confidence of that age - ‘He who dares wins’. This was the watchword, and bold publicity coupled with diligent application of the town’s motto ‘Progress’ proved it to be true. There were great natural advantages: 7 miles of flat, golden sands washed twice daily by no ordinary sea but ‘the bounding main’.

With the help of the railways, equally confident and zealous, the workers were speedily brought from sprawling, industrial areas and once in, they were captivated. Here was splendour in buildings and interiors envisaged only in fairy tales. Here was safe bathing (all the rage) and the facilities that went with it. Here was a cornucopia of entertainment and daylong merriment extending into night. Every Bank Holiday after the opening of Blackpool Tower signalled some new and entrancing addition to the pleasure domes. The crowds came in their thousands year after year, as children, with their own children, and with their grandchildren, to ‘wonderful Blackpool, the most progressive resort under the flag’.

This book is a truly wonderful record of the growth of Blackpool into the national treasure it is today.

The Author Allan Wood was born and bred in Blackpool, where his parents still live. He became interested in the history of the town upon coming across some old photos while away at university, and now collects Blackpool postcards. He co-authored two volumes of Blackpool in Old Picture Postcards with Ted Lightbown in the 1980s, and together they wrote another book for Amberley Publishing, Blackpool Through Time, in 2010.

In other action, our Girls Under 15’s squad continue to impress with 4 wins and a draw out of their first 5 games to be in a breakaway group of 3 teams at the top of the table. Our Youth team enjoyed an excellent 3-0 win against top of the table Poulton Youth, but exited the Cup at the Quarter Final stage with a 0-2 defeat to local rivals Norcross and Warbreck.

Our Under 9’s Blades are joint 2nd in the A league, a draw and defeat against local rivals the only games played in a month where the weather has affected many planned fixtures.

Our Under 9’s Predators, with 5 wins out of their last 6 games, have started to climb the league table, just 5 points off the top. Our Under 10’s Blades remain unbeaten with 7 wins and 5 draws from their opening 12 games, but still lie 2nd in the A Division, 3 points behind the leaders with 2 games in hand. Our Under 10’s Predators are joint top of the B Division, with 4 wins and 2 draws from their last 6 games taking them level, but having played 2 games more. In an age group where we show incredible strength in depth, our Under 10’s Vipers are also challenging for the title, in the C Division, with 8 wins and 3 draws from their first 12 games keeping them in the 4-way hunt for honours.

BJFF in the Community – Schools Coaching Programme Commenced...

Our Schools Coaching Programme has now bedded in, with our Schools Liaison Officer Steve Spencer delivering high quality coaching sessions in core curriculum time, providing after school clubs, and also offering additional after school coaching services at the BJFF sports hall (3G Astro-Turf facility). Sessions continue to be well received at Anchorsholme, Bispham Endowed, Kincraig, Manor Beach, Moor Park and St Bernadettes. We do have other coaches in place at St Teresa’s and Montgomery High School.

Our Under 11’s Blades 9-A-Side team have now won their first 6 games to keep up the challenge with some teams having played more games, and in an impressive side-line we took on the might of Blackpool FC Academy in a friendly at Myerscough College, and a battling performance saw our boys run out 1-0 winners. Our Under 11’s Predators have a win and a draw to show for some battling performances in a tough division.

On a Sunday, in the Blackpool & District Youth League, our Under 11’s Blades 11-A-Side team are 3rd in the Alpha league with 5 wins and a draw from their first 8 games, whilst our Under 11’s Predators are also 3rd in the Beta league with 5 wins and a draw from 11, with some impressive victories along the way. Our Under 12’s Blades have shot to the top of the A Division with 4 wins and a draw from their first 6 league games. In the Under 13’s section, our Blades have had a poor start to the season with 1 win from 4, but our Predators are well placed in the Beta league with 4 wins and 2 draws from 7 games seeing them well inside the top half.

Our Under 14’s lie 2nd in the Beta league with 6 wins and a draw from the first 8 games, some high-scoring victories during October and early November. Our Under 15’s are adapting to life in the Alpha league, having won the Beta league last season, whilst our Under 16’s Whites have started well with 4 wins out of 5, and our Blues improving and close to breaking their duck.

BJFF - Football for ALL SKILLS Academy Initiative – Update...

Our “Football for ALL Skills Academy” welcomes children who are new to football, or who would just like some extra training, with the emphasis on a fun and friendly environment. Headed up

by Level 2 coaches, Joe Rooney and Adam Monk, we have two age-group sessions on a Sunday morning. We welcome Boys and Girls aged between 4 and 8, each and every Sunday, from 10:00am - 11:15am, and then from 11:15am until 12:30pm we welcome Boys and Girls aged between 9 and 13. Trainers, Football Boots, Shin Pads and a Drink recommended. The BJFF Club House, with our new 3G Astro-Turf surface, is on the corner of Kelvin Road and Carr Road.

Each regular participant will be presented with their very own Skills Academy tangerine training kit. This season we use the first new pitch at St Marys Catholic College for our U11s 9 a-side, U12s and U13s. These are exciting times for the clubs future with ongoing development during 2012 to 2014. This season we will have to endure the need to use alternative facilities or play games away as work continues at St Marys. We would like to thank our local school partners for their continued support.
