MILITARIA ANTIQUES - WHERE SO MANY ITEMS TELL A STORY All over the UK, in many auction houses, there is a Militaria section, where enthusiastic collectors compete to add to their collections. The items on offer are wide ranging, with such things swords used in ancient battles, muskets, rifles, bayonets and pistols, uniforms and badges, naval equipment and much more. However it is the medals that tell a story of amazing bravery, courage and sacrifices made by so many members of our armed forces, not only in the two great wars, but in other conflicts around the world and even now in Afghanistan.

You only have to read the brief notes of lot 900, which sold in auction on the 3rd May 2012 – to see how three brothers gave their all for our country in the First World War – this being a wonderful story of how each of them, two in the Army and one in the Navy, who served so bravely along with so many others.

There are many different collectables in Militaria - for instance, shown here the boxed Kreigsmarin Naval U-Boat Sextant from the 1939-45 Second World War and an Army Colt Revolver (de-activated of course!) and so on. It really is a most interesting collecting area and extremely popular in the UK. Citation reads: “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty for a long period of active service as battalion(s) medical oficers orderly, when with great bravery and skill he attended wounded under the most heavy shellfire and the worst conditions of mud, with absolute disregard for personal fatigue and safety.” For Gallentry in the field - next higher, the Victoria Cross.

Labels Disable

Fylde Coast Disability Awareness (FCDA) have organised ‘Labels Disable’, a full weekend of inclusive activities, performances and exhibitors aimed at raising disability awareness in the community. The event is to be held on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th July 2012 from 10:00am till 6:00pm daily at the prestigious Winter Gardens in Blackpool.

On the Saturday there will be a variety of voluntary and charity organisations and local businesses promoting their services such as support, mobility aids, leisure activities, transport...anything at all that will promote independent living.

The event will include ‘Disability Rocks the Fylde’ which will see performances from many local acts and celebrities including the very talented Martin Finn (Autistic Superstars BBC3), Rob Eagle (Britain’s Got Talent 2011) and ‘Father and Son’ (Britain’s Got Talent 2010), Graham and James Edington, who both beat cancer.

We will be ‘highlighting the ability in disability’ and are inviting local inclusive sports, performing arts groups etc to show the community what can be achieved in the fields of the arts, sports and entertainment. Performers already signed

up include: Urban Dance Project, Living Well Taekwondo, Carleton Crossing, Scott Slattery (Michael Buble tribute) and a dance group from A.L.S (Activity & Leisure Solutions) which provides leisure activities and support for disabled children and their siblings.

On the Sunday there will be Fylde Family Fun Day with inclusive activities, inflatables, side stalls, even more entertainment including the ‘Voice of an Angel’, Chloeann Foster and a fantastic Craft, Arts and Gifts Fair featuring the finest in local talent and products from leather crafts, greetings cards, jewellery, Fairtrade goods, soaps and bath bombs, sewing and crochet and much more.

The whole weekend promises to be one to remember!
