Divorcing couples must try mediation before court Divorcing couples will soon have to try mediation to resolve disagreements before they are allowed to take their case to court.

The Children and Families Bill, which is currently being considered by Parliament, will oblige couples to try mediation as a first step towards resolving differences.

Cases involving extreme circumstances such as domestic violence or abuse will be exempt from the law and will continue to be settled in court.

Mediation involves couples holding discussions overseen by a trained mediator such as a solicitor. This helps them to resolve issues like financial settlements and contact arrangements for their children. The resulting agreements can then be made into a legally binding court order.

Mediation certainly works for some people, however it is not suitable for every case, for example where one (or both) of the parties is unwilling to approach Mediation with the intention of settling the dispute, or where one or both of the parties is unwilling to make a full and honest disclosure of his or her financial position.

In 2012, more than 17,000 people successfully separated from their partners using mediation. The Government’s view is, as Family Justice Minister Simon Hughes says ‘Mediation works and we are committed to making sure that more people make use of it, rather than go through the confrontational and stressful experience of going to court.

When people separate we want them to do it in the least damaging way for everyone involved, especially children.

That is why we want them to use the excellent mediation services evocardavailable to agree a way forward, rather than have one forced upon them.’

In most cases, particularly those involving financial arrangements upon separation/divorce both parties will also need legal advice alongside Mediation to ensure that they understand the nature and effect of any proposals under discussion and whether these provide a fair outcome for them.

Lancaster News It’s Time To Take On Cancer As Race For Life 2014 Launches In Lancaster A heartfelt invitation is going out to all North West women urging them to enter Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life.

Event organisers are asking all mums, grans, sisters, aunts, daughters and friends to join the formidable army of passionate women determined to take on cancer by entering a Race for Life 5k event at Lancaster University on Sunday 20th July 2014.

Cancer Research UK receives no Government funding for its ground-breaking work but with help from the people of the North West the charity intends to beat cancer sooner.

Jennifer Ward, Cancer Research UK’s North West Events Manager, said: ‘It is a great opportunity to spend time with the people we love. And for that reason it’s also the perfect date to enter Race for Life. This is because taking part in Race for Life, and raising money for life-saving research, will help more men, women and children survive cancer so they can go on to spend more precious moments with their loved ones.’

Jennifer continued: ‘We’re calling on an army of feisty females to help us kiss cancer goodbye.

This year, organisers need 1000 women and girls to stride out to help raise £40,000.

Jennifer continued: ‘Race for Life events are not competitive. They are not about being fit or fast.

Instead, they are an amazing way to celebrate life but also remember those who have been lost to the disease. Participants may be walking, jogging

Shrubs for 

Here are a few suggestions for shrubs which do their thing in spring, and which if you plant them now, should give you a great show this year.

So here are a handful of my favourites:

Magnolia stellata The star magnolia is a beautiful shrub with white flowers, which, as its name suggests, are arranged like a star. Not only are the flowers very delicate, but they are also sweetly scented, and open from attractive silky buds.

It is relatively slow growing, but will eventually reach a height of 3m and a spread of 4m. It has quite a delicate scent and the narrow, deep green leaves that appear after the flowers are very attractive. It prefers an acid soil, but will live in a neutral one if you plant it in a rich loam and dose it annually with Sequestrene.

Daphne x burkwoodii 'Somerset'

Chaenomeles japonica The Japanese quince is often wrongly called simply 'Japonica'.

It is a deciduous, thorny shrub grown for its bright red or redorange flowers and round, yellow fruits. The leaves are mid-green and oval in shape.

It makes a fantastic wall shrub or hedge, but if left alone to be a freestanding shrub (it will reach 1m tall by 2m wide), it does become very untidy.

Both this species and its close relative, Chaenomeles speciosa (Flowering quince), which is slightly larger and bears clusters of bright red flowers from late winter until early spring, prefer well drained soil in a full sun location.

This semi-evergreen upright shrub is a relative of the native Mezeron (Daphne mezereum) that is flowering right now, but instead of pink flowers it has white flowers that are fringed with pink. These appear in clusters and are so sweetly scented that on a still day one plant can make a whole garden smell wonderful. The leaves are lance shaped, pale to mid green and, given a position in full sun, the shrub will reach 1.5m tall by 1.5m wide.

Committed to Culture Pupils at a Lancaster primary school saw behind the scenes at The Dukes as part of a new scheme between the city theatre and schools districtwide.

Five groups of children and teachers from Christ Church Primary School took it in turns to learn more about theatre and what it can offer when they visited The Dukes as part of its new Commitment to Schools scheme.

The scheme is led by The Dukes Creative Learning Department who have developed many successful and creative projects across the Lancaster district in recent years. The Commitment to Schools builds on this work by offering a bespoke year-long relationship to local schools.

Christ Church is the first school to sign up to the scheme and has opted for The Dukes to provide a series of workshops linked to the curriculum or tailored to specific projects. The scheme also offers schools access to tickets for live productions in the theatre, the outdoor shows in Williamson Park, and films, including satellite screenings from acclaimed venues including the National Theatre, The Globe and Bolshoi Ballet.

The scheme, which costs £1,000, also offers a range of opportunities for schools including support with their own productions, help with GCSE/A-Level exams and professional development, invites to special events and INSET days.

benefits young people by providing a creative, engaging and educational look at learning. It also helps students engage with cultural activities more easily.
