LINK-Mag Recipe

Strawberry and Rhubarb Crumble Roughly chopped fruit with a dash of ginger wine and a crunchy bar crumble topping!

Serves: 6

Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 40 minutes

You’ll need:

500g rhubarb 100ml water 100 grams golden caster sugar 1 tbsp Stones ginger wine 250g strawberries 75g butter 175g self-raising flour 1/2 tsp ground ginger 60g Demerera sugar 1 Crunchie bar, crushed

What to do:

Preheat your oven to 180c.

Trim and cut the rhubarb and place half of it in a saucepan with the golden caster sugar, the water and the ginger wine and simmer gently until syrupy.

Halve the strawberries the place all the fruit and rhubarb syrup into a baking dish.

To make the crumble, put the butter, flour into a bowl and rub with your fingers until it resembles bread crumbs. Stir in the sugar, ginger and the crushed Crunchie bar and sprinkle generously over the fruit.

Bake for 30 minutes until golden and bubbling.

Be a lottery Winn-yre

W

yre Council is considering the introduction of a local lottery and is inviting both good causes who could benefit, as well as local residents to have their say on the scheme.

It is proposed that tickets will cost £1 and players will have the chance to win up to £25,000 in every weekly draw. Each ticket would consist of six numbers which players can choose, or they can opt for a lucky dip. Money raised through the sale of lottery tickets would then be used to support local charities and community groups.

Anyone will be able to play, not just Wyre residents, however players can be assured that the proceeds will benefit causes within the district. Local charities and community groups will be able to register themselves with the lottery scheme and players can choose to select a specific good cause if they wish.

Councillor David Henderson, Leader of Wyre Council comments, “Creating a lottery scheme such as this would allow us to bolster support for good causes and help to continue the good work being delivered in the borough through the not for profit and voluntary and community sector. The 26

proposal is that 60% of proceeds will be given to good causes. This compares to approximately 28% of every £1 spent on a UK National Lottery ticket. None of the proceeds will be kept by the council.

“I would invite all groups that stand to benefit from the scheme to take a few minutes to complete our consultation so that we can get a clear picture of what groups are out there and just how many local organisations stand to benefit from the money the lottery could raise.”

Wyre Council would like to hear from local charities, community groups, friends groups, parent/teacher groups, youth clubs, town councils and sports groups who could potentially benefit from the lottery, as well as local residents from a players perspective.

A Suffragette City

A

lthough the theme for this year’s Gala was Disney, Pilling Lane Women’s Institute entered the Gala as Suffragettes, which fitted in with the scene from Mary Poppins and the chorus from the Suffragettes.

Fourteen members dressed up in Edwardian outfits and decorated hats with the green, purple and white colours of the Suffragettes, and very prominently wore ‘Votes for Women’ sashes, three of the ladies are in their eighties, a mean feat for these ladies as the route was over three miles long and took two hours. As To the best of their knowledge Pilling Lane WI have never entered the Gala and it was their 84th birthday this year, although they had helped serving teas and more at previous years events.

The WI were absolutely ecstatic to win two 1st prizes and be awarded the new ‘Vivienne Taylor Memorial Cup’, the first prizes were

iscover Wyre during this year’s Heritage Open Days, this year in Wyre we have a number of walks, talks and tours and the chance to go inside some of our beautiful buildings.

This year, there’s lots to enjoy in Wyre during Heritage Open Days. From guided walks to unique tours and activities, you can explore some of the borough’s most historical and iconic buildings and beautiful open spaces.

Every year in September, places across the country throw open their doors to celebrate their heritage, community and history. It’s your chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences – and it’s all free!

Wyre Council is taking part in the occasion from Thursday 13th to Sunday 16th September by hosting a range of events and activities for all ages to enjoy.

Highlights include tours of historic locations such at The Mount, Marine Hall, Rossall Point Tower, Marsh Mill, the Civic Centre, The Lower Lighthouse, Euston Park Gardens and Garstang Quaker Meeting House.

Jekyll’s Fierce Panda Release

J

ekyll are four alt.rock kids from Blackpool, England. They consist of Joel Foster (vocals/ guitar), Lewis Armistead (bass), Liam Singleton (drums) and Mike Spence (guitar). The scowlingly sultry ‘Plan A’ is their first single on esteemed indie record label Fierce Panda, and is taken from their recently released ‘Jekyll’ EP. It’s a fruitily powerful sound, too: recorded at Sugar House Studios (Pale Waves, Viola Beach), Plan A is more becalmed than some of their other Jekyll songs with it’s gently lunging guitars and fragrant falsetto, but you can still smell the frustration, as you may or may not expect from a band known for its melancholic soundscapes, dynamic mood shifts and visceral intensity. ‘Plan A’ is about feeling stagnant and directionless in your life and not knowing how to fix it,’ muse Jekyll. ‘It’s about being faced with an impossible dilemma (having two Plan As) and being torn apart by it. The song is about indecision.’

Ironically enough there was no indecision on the part of Fierce Panda who saw Jekyll play not once but twice at The Great Escape Festival (they stood in exactly the same spot during both sets to psych them out. Frankly, they didn’t even notice), and were so smitten by a complex sound likened to grown-ups running from Radiohead to Editors they did the deal there and then by the sea.

Barely a fortnight later the Jekyll release plans were being laid bare: hot on the heels of ‘Plan A’ the ‘Jekyll’ EP features

select previous releases including ‘Wounds’, which opened up various excellent doors to them from BBC Introducing Lancashire to East Street Tap in Brighton. Along the way there have been festival appearances at Sheffield’s Tramlines, Liverpool’s Threshold, South Yorkshire’s Blackfest, Manchester’s Sonder Fest, Lancaster Music Festival, The International Pop Overthrow Festival and Blackpool’s Rebellion Punk Fest, as well as support slots with Vukovi, October Drift, Racing Glaciers, Demob Happy, The Membranes, Glass Caves and The Tapestry.

The ‘Jekyll’ EP is also the first release as part of the Second Fierce Panda EP Club wherein six new bands will each release an EP over the course of the next year.

PILLING LANE WI July has been a busy month for our WI, we held a Strawberry tea and some of us wore Suffragette outfits in honour of the 100 years since women got the

vote, we then went on to join the procession in the Preesall and Knottend Gala again as Suffragettes (Mary Poppins) and won first price in the adult fancy dress, and also won the Vivian Taylor cup, so a big thank you to all who went to the trouble of dressing up and joining us on both days. On the 1st of August we had a brilliant talk from Dave Astley who is the son of our Treasurer Janet Astley, he is with the mountain rescue team and brought along his two dogs Jack who is fully trained and Tess a four month old puppy who is being trained to take over when Jack retires. He explained that it took roughly three years to train a dog to the standard required to go out and look for people who may have hurt themselves, or got lost in woods, mountains and even parks. He is based in Calderdale Mountain rescue which covers the Lancashire/ North Yorkshire border, although he has covered the Peak District and as far away as Wales.

Our next meeting is on the 5th September at St Oswalds’ Parish Hall at 7.30 we are having an Italian night with Tony Lees supplying the music. Flags in July for its parks across the borough. Poulton’s ‘Vicarage Park’, ‘Hawxthorne Park’ in Thornton, ‘Wyre Estuary Country Park’ in Stanah and Fleetwood’s ‘Memorial Park’ have all received the award for another year.

The parks are among a record-breaking 1,883 UK parks and green spaces that have received a prestigious Green Flag Award – the mark of a quality park or green space.

The Green Flag Awards scheme is run by leading environmental charity ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ who also run the Blue Flag/Seaside Awards for beaches.

This international award is a sign to the public that Wyre’s parks boast the highest possible environmental standards, are beautifully maintained and have excellent visitor facilities.

Councillor Simon Bridge, Street Scene, Parks and Open Spaces Portfolio Holder at Wyre Council said ‘We are very proud to win Green Flags Awards for our parks. What a great way to mark ‘Love Parks Week’. I would like to thank all the volunteers, Wyre Council officers and Friends groups for all their hard work and dedication.

Wyre Council celebrated Love Parks Week in July with events held at some of its award winning parks.
