Blackpool’s 2020 Illuminations will feature a special tribute to the heroes of COVID-19 with a dazzling display of hearts and rainbows along the famous Golden Mile. The section, which will also feature the faces of 50 nominated “Corona Heroes”, pays homage to the extraordinary efforts of the NHS and other key workers from around the UK during the pandemic. They were selected from several hundred nominations by Blackpool Illuminations’ Creative Curator, Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen. Blackpool Illuminations, which will be presented under a theme of Bring on the Light, will run from Friday 4 September through to January 3, 2021 – the first time the Lights have shone over the Christmas and New Year period. The key worker tribute is among several new features revealed at a preview event staged at Lightworks, the Blackpool Illuminations manufacturing depot, today (Tuesday 4 August). Others include:
• A newly-refurbished pirate tableau developed in association with Coral Island and taking pride of place on the cliffs at North Shore.
Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen said: “This has been the most extraordinary year, but we are delighted that Blackpool Illuminations will shine throughout the autumn and winter months. “The Illuminations have long given the British public a sprinkling of magic and a sense of escapism, and never have those qualities been more relevant than today. “I have been particularly privileged to be able to see for myself the hundreds of nominations that have been put forward as Corona Heroes from across the country – the only shame is that we could not feature every single one of them.” Cllr Gillian Campbell, Cabinet Member for Tourism & Culture, added: “We deliberately chose the theme of ‘Bring On The Light’ for this year’s display because it now feels like we are finally starting to emerge from a period of darkness that has truly tested the strength and resilience of a nation. “We are particularly pleased to be able to pay our own unique tribute to the NHS and other key workers whose unstinting efforts and dedication has helped so many these past few months.” It was revealed several weeks ago that the format of this year’s Switch-On event has changed to reflect the ongoing challenge of pandemic restrictions. Instead of a live concert in front of 20,000 people on an outdoor arena in front of The Blackpool Tower, the 2020 display will be triggered during a virtual streamed event produced by MTV at 8.30pm on Friday 4 September. It will be the first time in resort history that the Blackpool Illuminations Switch-On event has been accessible to a national and international audience.

THE STARS LINE UP FOR A VIRTUAL BLACKPOOL ILLUMINATIONS SWITCH-ON
T
he stars of Blackpool’s first ever virtual Illuminations Switch-On event have been revealed.
Spice Girl Melanie C, Fleur East, Becky Hill, Tom Grennan, Diversity and Blackpool’s very own Rae Morris will all perform in the hour-long streamed event which is being staged by MTV at 8.30pm on Friday 4 September. The virtual show, which will be hosted by Diversity’s Ashley and Jordan Banjo, will also feature charttopping DJ, Joel Corry. It will be free to access on MTV and VisitBlackpool channels, and will feature a mixture of exclusive pre-recorded performances at home and live performances filmed inside the Blackpool Tower Ballroom, as well as the all-important Switch-On moment, details of which will follow over the coming weeks. The Switch-On, which normally takes place on the Tower Festival Headland in front of a 20,000 strong audience, will act as the curtain-raiser for Blackpool’s Illuminations season which has been extended by two months and will now run from September 4 to January 3, 2021.

LINK-Mag Local News BLACKPOOL POSTPONES WORLD FIREWORKS The annual World Fireworks Championship Blackpool has been postponed. The four free events were scheduled to take place on successive Fridays – September 11, 18, 25 and October 2. Organisers VisitBlackpool say that the current restrictions on mass gatherings and safe distancing make it impossible to stage the events, which usually attract tens of thousands of people to the Promenade. Cllr Gillian Campbell, Cabinet Member for Tourism & Culture, said: “We have waited as long as we can to make this decision, but the current guidance simply does not allow for large-scale events such as these. “It is obviously disappointing not to be staging one of our most popular events, but we are maintaining our position that we will always put the health and safety of our residents and visitors first. “We will continue to review the guidance in the months ahead and if there is an opportunity to stage
one or more fireworks events at an appropriate time we will consider that option. “Either way, we are hoping to see a return of the usual sequence of World Fireworks events in autumn 2021.” VisitBlackpool has already announced that the autumn Illuminations season will be extended by two months, stretching from September 4 to January 3, 2021. The display, which will be presented under a theme of Bring On The Light, will feature a special tribute to the heroes of COVID-19 with a display of hearts and rainbows along the famous Golden Mile, as well as the images of more than 50 Corona Heroes from around the UK.
