Wyre to introduce garden waste collection charge

W

yre Council’s Cabinet has agreed proposals to introduce charges for garden waste collections.

The decision comes as the authority faces a loss of £980,000 funding from Lancashire County Council towards the recycling service, along with ongoing reductions in funding from central government.

Paid for collections will allow residents who subscribe to continue having their garden waste removed and at the same time recoup some of the money needed to deliver the service.

Councillor David Henderson, Cabinet member with responsibility for recycling at Wyre Council, said: “We have had no choice but to look at changing how we operate due to Lancashire County Council ending a cost sharing agreement, resulting in a loss of £980,000 to Wyre.

“Despite requests to reconsider or scale down the withdrawal of funding to lessen the impact on the districts in the county, the decision has been made and we now have to mitigate that impact.

Under the new arrangements, due to come into effect next spring, residents wishing to subscribe to the service will pay an annual fee of £30 to have their green bins emptied 22 times a year, which equates to £1.36 per collection. A reduced fee will be applied to additional green bins.

Those who don’t subscribe to the new service can deal with their garden waste in other ways; home composting is the most efficient way of getting rid of garden and food waste, and provides a free supply of compost to keep the garden blooming. It can also be taken to household waste recycling centres.

Steve Wear Blinds of Thornton is a father and daughter family business.

Between them they manufacture roller and vertical blinds and supply venetian, pleated and roman blinds. Steve has been in the blind industry for twenty years now, specialising in pleated blinds for Europe’s largest conservatory blind company, before opening his first shop in Kent.

Andrew will be keen to show you just how much information you can access through the library these days. Lancashire County Council subscribes to Ancestry, a key website for family history records.

Through these sites you can look at census returns 1841-1911 for England & Wales and the General

Registrar’s Indexes to Births, Marriages and Deaths 1837-2006.

There are also WW1 military records and much more besides. Ancestry can be used free of charge in any Lancashire library. You simply log in with your library card and click on the link to the Digital Library. www. lancashire.gov.uk/libraries.

In addition, the Digital Library is a gateway to other fascinating sources of information. Many of the sites can be accessed free of charge from the comfort of your own home as well as in the library. The Times Newspaper Archive 1785-1985 and the British Library 19th Century Newspaper Collection are two of these and are well worth checking out. • Leave your lights on at home when unoccupied and use timers on plugs if you’re out for a long time In last month’s article I referred to the Fleetwood Fireworks Extravaganza at the Marine Gardens. This was a huge event with approximately 10,000 people attending. The rain finally stopped at the crucial time to allow the event to go ahead unspoilt. As with all community events, it’s the volunteers that make it happen usually with very limited funds; I know this event is well supported but it does also require donations from members of the public to ensure it’s here to stay. The event has massively reduced the levels of anti-social behaviour across Fleetwood on 5th November and there are many organisations that continue to work well together to keep it that way. It was a fantastic event!
