Wyre to introduce garden waste collection charge
W
yre Council’s Cabinet has agreed proposals to introduce charges for garden waste collections.
The decision comes as the authority faces a loss of £980,000 funding from Lancashire County Council towards the recycling service, along with ongoing reductions in funding from central government. Paid for collections will allow residents who subscribe to continue having their garden waste removed and at the same time recoup some of the money needed to deliver the service. Councillor David Henderson, Cabinet member with responsibility for recycling at Wyre Council, said: “We have had no choice but to look at changing how we operate due to Lancashire County Council ending a cost sharing agreement, resulting in a loss of £980,000 to Wyre. “Despite requests to reconsider or scale down the withdrawal of funding to lessen the impact on the districts in the county, the decision has been made and we now have to mitigate that impact.

Those who don’t subscribe to the new service can deal with their garden waste in other ways; home composting is the most efficient way of getting rid of garden and food waste, and provides a free supply of compost to keep the garden blooming. It can also be taken to household waste recycling centres. Steve Wear Blinds of Thornton is a father and daughter family business. Between them they manufacture roller and vertical blinds and supply venetian, pleated and roman blinds. The Fleetwood PACT event takes place at the ASDA store on Dock Street on the third Saturday of each month between 1pm and 3pm. We’re usually joined by a local Fleetwood Town councillor too so between us we should be able to assist or refer your information to the right person. This was a huge event with approximately 10,000 people attending. The rain finally stopped at the crucial time to allow the event to go ahead unspoilt. As with all community events, it’s the volunteers that make it happen usually with very limited funds; I know this event is well supported but it does also require donations from members of the public to ensure it’s here to stay. The event has massively reduced the levels of anti-social behaviour across Fleetwood on 5th November and there are many organisations that continue to work well together to keep it that way. It was a fantastic event!
