Books are back in town

The much-loved literary festival, ‘What’s Your Story, Chorley?‘ returned for a second year in April as families from across the borough flocked to the town centre for a celebration of the written word.

oth children and adults were amazed by exclusive performances from top storytellers who brought the words to life, letting imaginations run wild.

The day-long festival, organised by Chorley Council and The Creative Network, took place on Saturday 24th April at a number of different venues across the town centre and featured a variety of workshops including creative writing, meet-the-author sessions and tips on how to get published.

Gary Hall, Chief Executive at Chorley Council, said: ‘The power of the written word is extraordinary and this festival is a really great way for people of all ages to have fun with reading, writing and listening. There was a real buzz around the town centre on Saturday and we received a great deal of positive feedback via social media from attendees who really enjoyed the event. “What’s Your Story, Chorley?” has been a renowned success in the two years that we have held it and we hope to continue to grow it, making it bigger and better for future years.’

Over 60 performers entertained people at 10 locations in the town centre ranging from Chorley Library and Goodies Coffee Shop, to Ebb and Flo bookshop, Market Walk and Knitty Nora’s. Grupo SambAfriq treated visitors to a dance and percussion spectacular as they performed as part of the event at Chorley Interchange and in Market Street.

The company, which specialises in marketing communications across various platforms including multi media, events organisation, signage, printing and branding, was selected from amongst hundreds of nominees across the North West to become one of the finalists for the prestigious New Business Start –Up Of The Year category.

Speaking on behalf of the company, Managing Director, Wayne Taylor said: ‘Marvel is a full service agency offering our clients everything they need on a daily basis. We specialise in digital, online and motor dealer events, so by combining our experience we developed a clever online booking portal to help customers connect with the dealers more effectively for their events. The effects were so good that we increased the number of appointments for one event by nearly 60%.’

The Hall is set within the beautiful surroundings of Astley Park which include historic woodland, a lake, a fully renovated Victorian walled garden alongside clean and modern facilities for visitors to enjoy.

The Hall is perhaps best known for its stunning Jacobean plasterwork ceilings and the house is built around an internal Elizabethan courtyard. The four wings of the house were extended by the families who lived here and most of the original features are retained to this day.

The walled garden is a dedicated event space and since the Heritage Lottery funded renovation project in 2009 it has built up a varied programme of cultural events throughout the year. The east facing part of the walled garden is home to a community food growing project and includes a small orchard alongside raised beds full of vegetables, fruits, herbs and salads. Much of the produce is used by Café Ambio, the onsite café within the Coach House building.

We are a group of local folk musicians who are keen to help up and coming local musicians get some experience of playing their instruments in a (semi) public environment. We do this by running a monthly ‘Slow and Steady’ session in a local community hall on a Saturday afternoon. The session is run by an experienced musician who understands the problems and needs of budding players, and makes sure that the music played is suitable for those who are learning. This is held at Eaves Green Community Centre on the first Saturday of every month. The session costs £2 which includes a set of music (if required) and tea and biscuits. We do not charge for your first visit. The main cost is the hire of the hall. The session runs from 2:00 until 5:00. We cater for most of the common folk instruments and specifically have experienced players for Whistle, Fiddle, Melodeon (G/D), Concertina (English and Anglo), Guitar, Banjo and Mandolin. Other instruments can be accommodated as long as they play in the common folk keys (primarily G and D, perhaps A). We have contacts all over the North West, and could certainly find friendly help for most other instruments.

Between them the instructors have a great many years of experience. All training is carried out using positive, reward based methods and we do not advocate or allow the use of check chains. We aim to teach you, the owner, how to enjoy your dog and train him to be a well behaved companion.
