advice on staying warm and well this Winter Over the last ten years a staggering quarter of a million older people have died from the cold. Research shows that exposure to the cold can have a devastating impact on the health of older people, who are particularly vulnerable to the impact of low temperatures. As people get older it takes longer to warm up which can be bad for people’s health. The cold thickens blood and increases blood pressure, and breathing in cold air can increase the risk of chest infections. The good news is that preparing effectively for the cold weather can literally save lives. That’s why this winter Age UK will be working hard to remind older people and carers of the importance of taking simple precautions to stay warm and well. The Charity is urging people to call Age UK Advice for free on 0800 169 65 65, and order a free copy of the Charity’s ‘Winter Wrapped Up’ guide which contains a free thermometer and provides tips on staying warm in winter. Alternatively the guide can be downloaded from www. spreadthewarmth.org.uk where contact details for local Age UKs can also be found.

AGE UK’S TOP TIPS FOR STAYING WARM AND WELL THIS WINTER l 64°F (18°C) is the ideal temperature for your bedroom and 70°F (21°C) is the ideal temperature for your living room. Check your thermostat or use a room thermometer to monitor temperature l Keep your bedroom window shut on at night. Breathing in cold air can increase the risk of chest infections. l Stay active and when you are indoors try not to sit still for more than an hour, if you can get up. Walk around or make a hot drink. l Eat well. It’s important to eat well, especially in the winter. Have at least one hot meal a day and have regular hot drinks, as they help to keep you warm. Also stock up on basic food items in case of a cold snap. 10

Caroline Abrahams, Charity Director at Age UK, said: “Although it sounds like common sense, advising people on how to stay warm in winter can actually make all the difference. Many people are not fully aware of how the cold affects our bodies differently as we age and how, if we don’t take sensible precautions, it can very quickly put our lives in danger. “Winter can be an incredibly daunting and difficult time for older people, especially those who live alone or are housebound, so it’s vital that we do all we can to help them prepare for the colder weather. We urge anyone who is concerned about keeping warm and well over winter to get in touch with their local Age UK to find out how we can help them.”

Age UK’s Campaign for Warm Homes For many years, Age UK has argued that improving energy efficiency in people’s homes is the long term to solution to the high levels of excess winter deaths, winter health problems and fuel poverty amongst older people in England. Due to the closure of one of the Government’s flagship energy efficiency programme - the Green Deal - currently there is very limited support for anyone who wants to install measures to make their home warmer. That is why the Campaign for Warm Homes is urgently calling on the Government to reform its energy efficiency programme to enable all older people to live in a warm home. For more information about the campaign and contacting your local MP, please go to www.ageuk.org.uk/ warmhomes

Have a very messy Christmas As some of Blackpool’s finest musical acts take to the stage to reinterpret classic Christmas songs

B

ack for it’s eighth season after a two year break, A Very Messy Christmas is not just your average local gig. Over 14 of our finest local acts take to the stage in one night, packed tighter than santa’s sack, to smash out their own takes on Christmas classics as well as a couple of their own tunes. The event which started back in 2005 at the long since defunct South Shore music venue Riffs before moving to The Blue Room in Blackpool town centre after the closure of Riffs. However the curse of the ever evaporating Blackpool music venue struck once again with The Blue Room (Version 1) closing in 2013 (some may argue in part due to the bands polluting the atmosphere with terrible Christmas music) leaving ‘A Very Messy Christmas’ without a home. The night faded into the annals of Blackpool music history never to be heard of again. However the13event, much like big screen adaptations of Spiderman and Keith Richards, refused to lay down and die and with the opening of the Bootleg Social Club on Topping Street last year the organiser

felt that ‘A Very Messy Christmas’ had once again found a home that it could move into, festive up and hopefully not cause the venue to close this time. Playing A Very Messy Christmas 8 will be a host of familiar acts to have graced the event over the past decade. Goonies Never Say Die, Blackpool’s very own instrumental rock act will return to the live scene alongside well as other familiar ‘Messy Christmas Carollers’ Kraul, Uncle Paul, The Drop-Out Wives, Dinosaurs Are S*** Dragons, Stewart Penwarden and Black Eddy. New acts to grace the festive stage this year are The Poly-Esters, I Drink Therefore There’s Darkness, Eye The Bomb and Adam Smith. There will be more line-up announcements on the facebook event page over the coming weeks. A Very Messy Christmas 8 at Bootleg Social Club, Topping Street, Blackpool. Saturday 19th December 2015 at 9pm. www.bootlegsocial. co.uk

Lifestyle

New Years Resolutions By Danielle Jordan

New Years Eve is often highly anticipated and a massive anticlimax.

Bars and restaurants are suddenly triple the price, the best laid plans often go awry and New Years Day is not only accompanied by a hangover but a big list of things you decided the day before would suddenly be your primary life focus. New Years resolutions are part and parcel of the holiday season, we’ve all got to the end of the year reflecting of the twelve months that have past and we wonder if we are where we wanted to be. With the dominance of social media, we now also have shiny glittering photos of all our family and friends lives that always look more successful, more fulfilling and generally better than ours. This of course is due to the fact that we only post our highlights on Facebook, the majority of people on your friends list don’t have a backstage pass to the less enjoyable moments! But ignoring the social side, the end of the year is when we decide how we will improve our lives in the year to come. January the 1st seems to have a feel of a fresh slate, a new beginning that we don’t associate with any other time in the calendar. The most common resolutions are to quit smoking, lose weight and gain better employment/promotion or change your job. These are three rather massive life changes, you go to work nearly every day, your weight is directly linked (in the most part) to your daily diet and exercise regime and if you’re a smoker, you smoke every day. To change such ingrained habits are not easy. 14

Depressingly, one survey I came across quotes only 8% as average of individuals achieving their goals. However, it’s not all bad news, we can give ourselves a better chance of success and this year we can take control of how we tackle New Years resolutions. I came across a list I made in 2005, the items on it? Well; 1) 2) 3) 4) 5)

Lose two stone Exercise More Start a new hobby Spend more time with family Save money

Even just looking at the list gives me a headache, I’m surprised I didn’t go all out and add ‘cure the common cold,’ or ‘achieve world peace’ to the mix! Presumably I thought my new hobby was going to involve the family, include exercise and I was going to get paid for it, because that’s realistically the only way I was going to achieve all these things! So how did my 2005 shape up? Well, I saved no money, (in fact I had to borrow money from my Dad when I moved house because I had no savings) I joined a gym which I went to a total of seven times (try and hold back your awe for now) and although I put on nearly a stone throughout the year, I guess you could count ‘eating more when I realised I was failing at my goals’, as a hobby.

So although I’m clearly by no means an expert, here are my quick tips for a more successful New Year...

New Years Resolutions

1) Find your end goal and make suitable landmarks.

If you want to lose two stone that’s great but why not start off with the aim to lose 5lbs in a month? By showing yourself you can do it in smaller steps, those little chunks will soon add up, and you’ll look back and realise how far you’ve come.

2) Make your goals more specific.

‘Exercise more’ is a very wide aim, but if for example you specify that you’d like to exercise for 30 mins extra a week, you’ll have more direction.

3) Be realistic

Do you enjoy running? If not, you probably won’t succeed at it and then you’ll feel you’ve failed, think about what you enjoy, why 16

not check out a local netball team or inline skating club, by thinking about what you’d have fun doing and starting from there, in a few months you may find you’re exercising more without having to force yourself to do so, and you’ve found yourself a new hobby!

4) Give yourself a break

Big changes take time, one year might not be long enough, but the important thing is you’re committing to improve things for yourself, you’re not a failure, you just haven’t finished working on it. By alleviating the pressure you’ll have a much bigger chance of success. 5) And finally, why not also use the end of this year to

It’s very easy to say, I’m still not in a size 14, I’m not yet a marathon runner and I’ll never manage to save money. Realise your successes however small, ‘this year I finished reading that book I wanted to’, ‘I finally sorted out the shed’. Change your thinking and you’ll be amazed what a boost it’ll give you. It’s not easy and it can be difficult to persevere when it feels like a losing battle. But you’re not at war, just because things haven’t changed by January 2nd does not mean that you’re not going to see the changes you want to. So if you desire, by all means make a list but don’t set it in stone, or curse yourself for any slip ups, if you really want to, you will get there and in the meantime,

Celebrate the positive have a very very happy things in your life. New Year!

Blackpool celebrates Bumper Season

B

lackpool has enjoyed one of its best October half-terms on record. Figures from various sectors within the visitor economy show that the nine days at the end of October proved a remarkable finale to the 2015 tourism season with a number of operators claiming their highest ever figures. Indicators show that the season got off to a relatively slow start as an early Easter and inconsistent weather in the early part of the season impacted on visitor numbers. However, as the summer holidays progressed, the resort recorded the highest August total for visitor figures for more than three years – and then saw an even stronger performance when the Illuminations season got underway in September, culminating in a spectacular October half-term. Iain Hawkins, Merlin Entertainments, said: “October was a great month for the Merlin visitor attractions in Blackpool. All of our attractions during half term became record breakers with the Blackpool Tower Eye, Madame Tussauds, SEA LIFE and Dungeons all setting new daily and weekly visitor totals! The Tower Circus experienced multiple sell outs and the Ballroom’s Halloween party had to have an additional party night scheduled to cope with demand!” Jane Cole, Managing Director of Blackpool Transport, said: “I am delighted that this year Blackpool Transport’s buses and tramway proved to be the preferred mode of transport for visitors in the resort.

The autumn visitor numbers come on the back of a hugely successful events programme which started with the two-day Blackpool Air Show in early August, followed by Ride The Lights, the high-profile Illuminations Switch-On weekend and four free fireworks events, each attended by tens of thousands of spectators. This year also saw the launch of the new LightPool project – a £2m investment in the Illuminations which has been used to develop spectacular projection shows on the front of the Tower building. Cllr Gillian Campbell, Deputy Leader of Blackpool Council, said: “While we won’t have the full year visitor numbers until early 2016, all of the autumn indicators show that this has been a record-breaking Lights season. “This illustrates the critical importance of the investment that we make in the events programme, in destination marketing and in the annual Illuminations display. “This year’s October half term has been astonishing and makes up for what was a relatively slow start to the year. It is hard to imagine any other resort destination in the UK that is capable of attracting such an incredible number of visitors outside of the summer months.”

“We have received some tremendous feedback from customers about how they enjoyed travelling with Blackpool Transport.”

A spokesperson for Blackpool Pleasure Beach commented: “We have enjoyed a strong end to the 2015 season at Blackpool Pleasure Beach. This has been bolstered by a number of hugely successful events including Vampire Pleasure Beach, our annual Halloween event, our first ever Titanium dance event, and our final Late Night Riding event of the season.

Michael Williams, Managing Director of the Winter Gardens, said: “2015 has been a great year for the Winter Gardens and continues to be so. We’ve had some truly outstanding shows in the Opera House including Jesus Christ Superstar, Lord of the Dance, The Glenn Miller Story, the world premiere of Last Night a DJ Saved My Life starring David Hasselhoff and of course, a fantastic eight-week run of Cats.”

“Many visitors enjoyed the unseasonably good weather throughout the October Half Term and took the opportunity to ride until 8pm each evening. Overall 2015 has been a good season at Blackpool Pleasure Beach, the highlight being the launch of our new Red Arrows Skyforce in May which was celebrated with a display by the Red Arrows. This was enjoyed by tens of thousands of visitors and residents.”
