The Norcross Social Club Returns

After some 70 years, when the majority of the Civil Service Site at Norcross finally closed its doors at the end of August, so too did the shutters come down on the Bar at the Norcross Social Club.

Following the announcement from HASSRA that Norcross Social Club was to close, a small group of associate members set out to find a new home for the club independently. It seemed like a bit of a pipe dream at the time but after discussions with the owners of Tee Time Golf Centre we realised that opening our club at this venue could be mutually beneficial for both organisations. There was a great deal of scepticism surrounding our plans but as more people joined us and gave an unbelievable amount of support, providing countless hours of labour, materials and moral support we finally made it happen and I believe this club is a shining example of what community minded people can do when they pull together.

The club opened on Saturday 23rd of November with a fantastic opening party welcoming over 200 new and old members through the doors. We already

have a member base approaching 500 people. On behalf of the Directors we would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has helped make this possible and look forward to the continued support of all our existing members and new members yet to come.

The original club, which opened in 1952, had been the focal point for not only the sporting clubs, and other clubs within the Sports and Social Association, but also a pleasant watering hole for members of staff and their friends. Over the years, the Club has gained a reputation for hosting first class cabaret acts at the Brierley Suite and also became a popular venue for staff to celebrate birthdays, retirements, christenings etc. The new club aims to carry on the traditions of the past social club and offer more besides The Phoenix has risen from the ashes and the spirit of the Norcross Social Club will continue

1. Cut the broccoli into florets and cook for 3 minutes in boiling salted water. Blanch immediately in cold water to stop them from over cooking.

2. Steam the clams in a little water, wine or stock for 5 to 10 minutes or until their shells open. Drain well.

3. Sauté the garlic, coriander, parsley, chilli, broccoli and clams in the olive oil with a little white wine in a frying pan. Add salt and pepper to taste.

4. Meanwhile cook the pasta 'al dente', so it is tender but still has a little bite. Drain but keep behind a little of the pasta water.

5. Add the cooked pasta to the broccoli and clams (add a little pasta water if necessary) and sauté briefly to allow the flavours to mingle. 6. Sprinkle with grated parmesan to taste.



Watch the birdies!

With the RSPB's annual Big Garden Birdwatch taking place on January 25 and 26, when people are invited to spend an hour recording the birds they see in their own gardens and surrounding area to help provide a snapshot of bird numbers and species in Britain, we may see something other than wood pigeons or magpies.

Indeed, the mild winter so far should have proved beneficial to birds in this country because there will have been more natural food available including insects and accessible berries, according to the RSPB. However, it is crucial that gardeners still top up their feeders and birdbaths because if it does turn cold, the birds will need sustenance, the charity warns.

Last year's Big Garden Birdwatch results showed that some of the smaller birds which decreased in numbers the previous year bounced back.

Sightings of goldcrests, the UK's smallest birds, doubled, long-tailed tits increased by a third and coal tits increased by a quarter.

But in the last 30 years many species have been in decline.

Sightings of house sparrows, robins, chaffinches and starlings have all declined since 1979, while wood pigeons and collared doves have shown big increases.

Indeed, wood pigeons have become a pest to gardeners who grow their own winter brassicas such as kale and purple sprouting broccoli, providing a veritable feast for these large birds.

Some gardeners say the pigeons can be deterred by hanging up red cloths. Others resort to covering crops using netting.

"Wood pigeons are happy in lots of different habitats, unlike other birds which aren't so adaptable," says Richard Bashford, of the RSPB. 20

"Some birds avoid gardens because they are so timid but wood pigeons and collared doves will do well in gardens. They will eat fruits, berries, grains and seeds and aren't fussy."

The problem is that the sheer size of the bigger birds can scare off small birds which venture into gardens.

Plus, wood pigeon numbers continue to increase as they are not as susceptible to cold weather and have a longer nesting season, producing more chicks per year than other species. The young are fed on crop milk, produced by their parents.

However, there are specific foods which smaller birds love and which you might consider when re-filling your bird feeders.

Small birds such as goldfinches love nyjer seeds and sunflower seeds.

Peanuts are rich in fat and are popular with tits, greenfinches, house sparrows, nuthatches, great spotted woodpeckers and siskins.

Crushed or grated nuts attract robins, dunnocks and even wrens.

But never use salted or dry roasted peanuts and only buy from a reputable source.

Fat balls are great for many birds, especially in cold weather, but make sure you remove them from any nylon mesh before putting them out, as birds can catch their feet in the mesh.

Live food such as mealworms are relished by robins and blue tits, and may attract other insect-eating birds such as pied wagtails. Make sure the mealworms you buy are fresh. Any

dead or discoloured ones shouldn't be used as they can cause problems such as salmonella poisoning. Again, buy from a reputable source.

Of course, your own planting scheme can also go some way to making your garden a haven for birds.

A good hedgerow, with a mixture of deciduous trees, shrubs and climbers will provide birds with both shelter and food. Leave an area of your lawn to grow long, to encourage insects to it, and add some nectarrich plants such as knapweed, red hot pokers, Michaelmas daisies, snapdragons, cornflowers and cosmos to your border.

Red and yellow flowers are said to be the most frequented by birds.

House sparrows can often be seen attacking red and yellow flowers in spring and autumn, eating buds and petals. Berried plants including the spindle bush, the rowan, holly and hawthorn are also a magnet to birds.

When buying bird food, avoid seed mixtures that have split peas, beans, dried rice or lentils as again only the large species can eat them dry.

Consider also that kitchen scraps such as cut-up fruit, cake crumbs, grated cheese and uncooked porridge oats are likely to attract bigger birds.

If you select your bird food carefully, hopefully you'll soon have a host of winged visitors - and not only the large ones - to your garden.

BISPHAM JUNIOR FOOTBALL FEDERATION BJFF – Mid-Season Review…..

As we have now reached the mid-season Xmas break, we look at how each of age group squads has progressed over the first half of the season.

Under 9’s – Under new regulations, this age group take part in 3 trophy events per season, and in the first of these our Blades have won through to the Quarter Finals of the Coulton Cup, whilst our Predators and Vipers take their place in the Quarter Finals of the Coulton Plate.

Under 10’s – With only 8 games remaining, our Blades look like finishing Runners-Up in Division A for a second consecutive season, 6 points behind the league leaders, but well clear of 3rd place. Our Predators are well placed in Division B, in 3rd place with 10 games remaining, and with a chance of bettering last year’s 4th placed finish.

Under 11’s – With 14 games played and 7 remaining, our reigning champions, the Blades, are still unbeaten, dropping only 2 points to be 7 points clear at the top and hot favourites to retain their crown. In the B Division, our Vipers Whites have 30 points from 12 games, and remain one of 4 teams who are capable of winning this competitive league with 8 games remaining. In the C Division, our Vipers Blues are performing well in their first season under new management, currently in 4th place and a final push in their remaining 5 games could see them sneak 3rd place, whilst our Vipers Reds, a completely new team this year, have exceeded expectations to currently sit 7th with results and performances improving all the time. Our Sunday representatives, the Predators, are currently lying in 6th place in a tough league.

Under 12’s – Our 9-A-Side Champions, the Blades, are in a group of 5 teams who are separated by 4 points as the league splits at the mid-season interval. With 8 games in the New Year against their closest rivals, any one of the teams could take the crown. Our Predators Whites have won their last two 9-A-Side games to finish the first half of the season strongly, and go into the New Year full of confidence.

In the 11-A-Side competition, our A Division representatives, the Blades, are in 5th place in a league where any of 8 teams could take the title.

In the B Division, our Predators Blues have had

an outstanding start to the season, dropping their first points in their 9th game of the season, and will fancy their chances of taking the title and winning promotion. Our Predators Whites, much as in the 9-A-Side league, have improved as the season has progressed, and will look to improve on their current position of 7th.

Under 13’s – Our Blades have had a tough first half of the season in another highly competitive league, lying 7th going into the Xmas break, but with the ability to climb the table in the New Year. Our Predators have already won more games at this point of the season (3) than in the whole of last, and continue to demonstrate their improvement.

Under 14’s – We have two teams battling it out at the top end of the B Division, with our Vipers currently 3rd with 8 wins, a draw and defeat from their opening 10 games, but with games in hand can move to top spot, and with 10 games to play anything can happen. Our Predators continue to demonstrate their consistency and lie in 5th place with 7 games remaining.

Under 15’s – In their first season in the A Division, our Under 15’s are competing in midtable and holding their own.

Under 16’s – Like our Under 15’s, our Under 16’s are currently mid-table, and will be looking to a Hogan Cup run in the second half of the season.

Under 16’s Girls – Under new management this season, and with a few new players, our Girls are really enjoying their football, and picked up their first win in December.

Under 18’s – Again, under new management this season, and with a young squad made up of mainly first year Youth team players, our boys are currently mid-table, but learning a lot from their experiences, and with 3 more wins under their belt already than in the whole of last season.

St Mary’s is nearing the final stages of developing 5 new full sized multi game football pitches and sports ground. We have been using the ground over the past four years, be it during the construction, so use has been limited. However it is clear to see the facility will be of a high standard as the investment continues.

Funds are a huge factor in sustaining community sports clubs and without them we would struggle to provide teams with kit and equipment, or maintain community projects. Comedy Carpet book launches as exhibition heads to “the Chinese” Tate Modern A brand new book is set to tell the vivid story of how Blackpool’s biggest piece of public artwork was created.

It comes as an exhibition about the Comedy Carpet is unveiled at Shanghai’s biggest ever design show, Aesthetics City. The artwork has been included as part of the Design Shanghai 2013 exhibition at Shanghai’s Power Station of Art (China’s equivalent to the Tate Modern) which is showcasing work from artists from all over the world. A large vinyl print of the carpet, along with two videos and some samples of the granite letters, are on display until 30 March 2014 as part of the ‘City of Interface’ section curated by Li Degeng.

Cllr Simon Blackburn, Leader of Blackpool Council, said: ‘It’s a real coup that a piece of artwork in Blackpool is being showcased on the other side of the world at one of China’s most prestigious art centres. Not only does it promote the cultural aspect of the town to thousands of international visitors, but is also a great advertisement for Blackpool in a country which has the potential to attract thousands of tourists here to see the real Comedy Carpet.’

The Comedy Carpet, and the work of its creator, Gordon Young, has already scored international acclaim, scooping the Tokyo Type Directors award in 2012 seeing off competition from more than 350 other international entries. Mr Young said: ‘I’ve been amazed at how our communal memory of comedy has been embraced in far flung places such as Tokyo and Shanghai. And I’m particularly delighted that the Comedy Carpet is being used as a resource for learning and fun in ways that I never anticipated.’

The exhibition coincides with the launch of a new book about the Comedy Carpet on Friday.

The book is on sale for £25 and can be picked up at the Tourist Information Centre and at the Grundy Art Gallery. It will be launched at a special unveiling at the Blackpool Tower Ballroom on Friday by Council Leader Simon Blackburn and artist Gordon Young. The book documents the entire process of creating the 2,200m2 granite artwork, from idea to launch, which contains jokes and catchphrases from over 1,000 comedians.

Beginning at the design and compilation stage, the book tells a story of the creation of the stone slabs and individual letters as well as images from the opening of the carpet by comedian

Ken Dodd. As well as proving a popular tourist attraction for many, it has also been a source of education for school children throughout Blackpool. Pupils from primary and secondary schools across the town have been improving their literacy skills by completing projects based on the carpet.

As well as creating board games based on the carpet, special classes around the artwork have been used to help children improve their English. On top of this, around 300 pupils learnt a Charleston routine inspired by the black and white silent movies of old. The dance the children learnt will also be performed at the book launch.

Cllr Blackburn added: “The Comedy Carpet has been one of the biggest new attractions that Blackpool has seen in years. Every time I drive or walk past the carpet you can guarantee that people will be stood reading the jokes and enjoying it as a piece of art as well as a tourist attraction. The carpet is well loved by everybody who visits it and also puts Blackpool on the cultural map, with contemporary art experts from all over the country praising the installation.

But we’ve also used the carpet to benefit our community too. Children have been learning about it in schools to improve their language skills, as well as watching old comedy films to get active and create their own dance routines.

The intricacies of installing the carpet began many years ago and stretch from the painstaking design through to the installation and launch.

Every inch of that work has been detailed in this book, which will provide the perfect present for somebody this Christmas.’

The carpet, which was opened in 2011, lies opposite the Blackpool Tower on Blackpool’s Promenade and was commissioned by Blackpool Council using part of a £4m grant from CABE’s Seachange programme.

The South head north, to Lytham

Ex members of The Beautiful South, Dave Hemingway and Alison Wheeler will be singing many of those hits including A Little Time, Don’t Marry Her, Rotterdam, Good as Gold, Perfect 10 and many more from the back catalogue.

This 9 piece band will also be performing several songs from their wonderfully received debut album as The South, Sweet Refrains (available on iTunes and Amazon).

History - from The Housemartins to The Beautiful South to The South, formed in 1988, The Beautiful South had a string of hit singles such as ‘Old Red Eyes Is Back’, ‘Rotterdam’, ‘Don’t Marry Her’, ‘Perfect 10’ and number one single ‘A Little Time’. Their greatest hits album, ‘Carry On Up The Charts’, was one of the fastest-selling albums in UK history, entering at number one and staying there for weeks, becoming one of the country’s most popular albums ever. After 20 years, ten studio albums, five greatest hits compilations, thirty-four chart singles, 15 million record sales worldwide and performing in front of millions of fans, when time was called on The Beautiful South in 2008, not everyone was ready to leave the party.

Dave Hemingway and Ali Wheeler, two of the three lead singers with the band, were having too much fun to get out the pipe and slippers, and so The South was formed. Joining the duo were fellow mainstays from the original touring band: keyboard wizard Damon Butcher and the potent horn section of Gaz Birtles and Tony Robinson that brought so much to the live shows. Armed with a sensational back catalogue of hits there is a long way to go on this particular road.

This band has history and pedigree. Dave Hemingway’s musical career stretches back into the Eighties. He became a founder member of The Beautiful South after the demise of The Housemartins, who had enjoyed a sustained purple patch and many hits before calling it a day in 1988. Whilst bassist Norman Cook went on to become superstar DJ Fat Boy Slim, Paul Heaton and Dave Hemingway proceeded to form the new band in December 1988. Right from the off, The Beautiful South seemed to defy the normal logic associated with pop bands, not least for the fact that they stayed together for 20 years.

Still as Beautiful as they ever were, The South continue the legacy with their own vibrantly singable and acerbically witty pop. As their critically acclaimed debut album Sweet Refrains, currently available on Zoo Records, confirms.

2014 will see them touring this new collection of songs alongside established favourites from their previous incarnation. The South are rightly extremely proud of their history - and their future looks very bright..
