Blackpool News It’s Time To Take On Cancer As Race For Life 2014 Launches In Blackpool Blackpool women are being urged to join forces and show cancer who’s boss by signing up to Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life 2014 which is now open for entries.

Every day, more than 100 people are diagnosed with cancer in the North West.* Everyone is special, everyone is somebody’s mum, dad, brother, sister, friend or colleague. And that’s why Cancer Research UK is calling on Blackpool women of all ages, shapes and sizes, to defy this dreadful disease by entering Race for Life 5k event at Blackpool Promenade on Wednesday, July 9.

Event organisers are issuing the rallying cry ‘cancer, we’re coming to get you’ and urging women to sign up as soon as possible. Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco, is an inspiring women-only series of 5k events which raise millions of pounds every year to help defeat cancer by funding life-saving research.

Liz Booth, Cancer Research UK’s Blackpool Events Manager, said: ‘We’re calling on Blackpool’s mighty-mums, gutsy-grans, feisty friends and go-getting girls to join our formidable army and take on cancer at this year’s Race for Life. We know how committed Blackpool women can be when they really make up their minds to do something. We want to harness that power to stop cancer in its tracks, by raising money for life-saving research. Race for Life is non-competitive. It’s not about being fit or fast.

Most women are able to walk 5k in an hour while chatting and having fun. Or they can choose to jog, run or even dance around the course if they

prefer.’

Everyone who takes part in Race for Life, from the participants themselves to the millions of supporters who sponsor and encourage them, becomes part of a powerful collective force rising up to beat cancer sooner. Last year, 2600 women took part in Race for Life in Blackpool and raised a fantastic £121,000. This year, organisers again need 2600 women and girls to stride out to help raise in excess of £110,000.

Money raised through Race for Life allows Cancer Research UK’s doctors, nurses and scientists to advance research which is helping to save the lives of men, women and children across the North West. Cancer Research UK receives no Government funding for its groundbreaking work but with help from the people of Blackpool, the charity intends to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.

Liz continued: ‘Race for Life is an amazing way to celebrate life but also remember those who have been lost to the disease. There are over 200 cancers and we won’t give up until we find cures for them all.’

World’s Largest Indoor Illuminations Opens Its Doors Illuminasia is the first attraction of its kind in Europe, over 35,000 led lights shine in a world of darkness lit by super-sized lantern structures.

Illuminasia, the World’s largest indoor illuminations experience, has finally opened its doors in Olympia at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens.

A team of 55 Chinese artisans has spent over a month creating giant 3D structures using traditional lantern craft to create one of the most visually stunning attractions the UK has ever seen.

Visitors will walk through six different zones spanning over 4000 square metres after entering the venue via a giant kalightascope tunnel.

The journey through the different zones will take families through the Mysteries of China to meet the Dragon Emperor guarded by rows of giant Terracotta warriors. The Blackpool Experience, gives a snapshot of the town’s rich history and heritage and a virtual map of the resort, complete with the three 3D piers and other famous landmarks with the famous seafront taking centre stage.

In the Land of the Giants guests will take a walk through a huge garden, weaving in and out of giant blades of grass, in a scene that could be straight from Honey I Shrunk the Kids.

Dwarfed by huge daisies, insects, birds and an enthusiastic puppy chasing its ball this magical scene creates the feeling of being the size of an ant!

Underwater fun and adventure with sharks and sea creatures in The Deep then make way for the Wonders of the World. These huge structures including the Tower of Pisa and the Statue of Liberty also sit alongside a 45-foot high fully illuminated Blackpool Tower!

The astounding Illuminasia structures are created from moulded steel framework which is then covered with coloured layers of silk before being lit in a blend of ancient Chinese lantern craft with the latest in lighting technology.

Co-Producer of the attraction Jon Conway said: “Words really don’t do the work here justice.

What has been created is unlike anything seen in Europe before and we are stunned with the final result. When I discovered these lantern shows on an overseas trip it seemed that Blackpool, home of the lights, would be the perfect place to stage it in the UK. Here we are and the first reactions of visitors say it all. We are thrilled.”

The evenings are getting longer and warmer, and this simple salad is quick to prepare, which means less time in the kitchen and more time in the garden.

Pour a glass of red wine, and enjoy!

Serves 4 Level of difficulty: Easy Preparation time: 15 minutes  1 cucumber 400g broccoli, cut into small florets 1 head of lettuce (or combine two varieties of lettuce) 1 pepper 8 cherry tomatoes 50g pistachios (or try walnuts, sunflower seeds, pine nuts ...)

100g of Iberico ham  6 tbsp olive oil 2 tbsp sherry vinegar 1tsp smooth mustard 1 tsp runny honey 1 clove garlic, crushed Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste  Cut the cucumber into thin slices using a peeler. Line the inside of four presentation rings with the cucumber slices. Place each on a plate and fill the rings with lettuce right up to the brim.

Cook the broccoli in boiling water for up to three minutes until just tender Chop the peppers and tomatoes into small pieces and place on top of the lettuce along with the broccoli florets.

Sprinkle the pistachios on top and add a few shavings of Iberico ham. Mix together all the ingredients for the vinaigrette and dress the salad. Then very slowly remove the rings to prevent the salad falling apart.

 

Rich in vitamins and minerals, this Mediterranean inspired dish makes for a quick and colourful supper.

Perfect with warm crusty bread and a glass of wine!

Serves 4 Level of difficulty: Low Preparation time: 60 minutes  8 red peppers (can also be green or yellow) 8 canned sardines (in oil) Salt and black pepper, to taste For the vinaigrette: 3 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp sherry vinegar 1 small sweet onion, finely diced 1tbsp finely chopped parsley Balsamic glaze to decorate  Place the peppers on a baking tray at roast at 220°C for 2030 minutes or until the skin in black. Cover with a clean wet cloth and allow them cool. Once the peppers are cool peel off the skin and remove seeds.

Slice the peppers into strips. whisk the olive oil, vinegar, onion, salt, black pepper and parsley. Slice the sardines in half lengthways and remove bones.

To serve: arrange the peppers on a place, top with the sardines and then spoon over the dressing. Decorate the plate with balsamic glaze. For this easy recipe, it is important to use high quality ingredients such as virgin olive oil. For an extra special touch use a balsamic glaze to decorate the plate (available in most supermarkets).

Illuminations Switch On 2014 Register NOW for wristbands for the Illuminations Switch on 2014 Register NOW – that’s the message from Blackpool tourism bosses as demand for the FREE 2014 Illuminations Switch-On heightens.

More than 3,000 people have already signed up ahead of the wristbands even being made available. And as registration opened at 9am on Wednesday 23 April, organisers at VisitBlackpool are urging people to get online at www. visitblackpool.com/switchon to avoid missing out.

Lancashire-based radio station Rock FM has already been announced as the media partner for Blackpool’s biggest night of the year which takes place this year on Friday 29 August on the Promenade’s Tower Festival Headland. The last free Switch-On in 2012 saw requests for more than 53,000 wristbands and with only 18,500 wristbands available this year, it is inevitable VisitBlackpool will be unable to meet everyone’s demands.

All wristbands will be allocated randomly with a maximum of four tickets per household, at least 6,000 of which will be allocated to people living within the Borough of Blackpool.

Cllr Graham Cain, Blackpool Council Cabinet Member for Tourism and Leisure, said: ‘There’s a real buzz around this year’s Switch-On with people already contacting the VisitBlackpool

team in the hope of getting wristbands. SwitchOn is a fantastic night for Blackpool and we hope to see a really good mix of residents and visitors enjoying the party atmosphere.’

The full line up of performers for Switch-On night will be announced over the coming weeks and media partner Rock FM will be promoting the event across the Bauer Media Group’s radio network in Scotland, Yorkshire and the North West Rock FM Breakfast presenters Hywel & Jamie added: “It’s Blackpool’s biggest night of the year and we are looking forward to seeing as many people there as possible, so get your name preregistered, it’s going to be a night to remember.”

Wristband registration closes at 12noon on Friday 8 August and successful applicants will be notified by email on Friday 15 August.

Following the recent death of my husband’s uncle, Richard Barlow and his wife Christine 3 years ago, we have discovered an album of memorabilia about the Norcross Players and Theatre One. Both Christine and Richard were key members of these theatre groups in the 1960’s and 1970’s, and I wondered if anyone from those days or maybe relatives of the group would be interested in this information. There are newspaper articles and theatre programmes, and also photographs. Christine was a key player in her time and won many awards.
