A brief introduction to Probate

Probate, has the legal authority to wind down the deceased person’s affairs. They can carry out simple tasks, such as payment of outstanding bills, as well as releasing money from bank accounts and selling or distributing the deceased person’s home and personal property.

---------------------------A Grant of Probate is one of two forms of Grants of Representation issued by the various Probate Registers which are dotted up and down the country.

Whilst being a technical legal term, the effect of a Grant of Administration is really very simple. It is an Order confirming that one or more people have the legal authority to take over the financial and legal affairs of a deceased person. In law we called this the administration of an estate.

Grants of Representation are issued by the Probate Registry because a deceased person can no longer manage their own affairs. They cannot write cheques, pay bills or sell their home. In order to ensure that these things are done properly, without illegal interference or fraud, English Law requires that an Executor or Representative be officially appointed by the High Court, through the Probate Registry to take over and administer the deceased person’s affairs.

There are two types of Grant of Representation.

The first is a Grant of Probate. A Grant of Probate is issued where the deceased person left a valid will and nominated one or more people to act as their Executors once they have died. If a person or persons are named as an Executor in the will, then those persons are entitled to apply to the Probate Registry for Grant of Probate.

The second type of Grant is a Grant of Letters of Administration. This is the Order or Grant which a deceased relative, friend or solicitor must apply for if the deceased person has not left a will and not named people as their Executors.

BCH hope apprentice success inspires others

Blackpool Coastal Housing (BCH) has today given rave reviews to their record breaking apprentice intake.

It comes ahead of National Apprentice Week which runs from March 3 to March 7. In a proactive effort to meet their needs and help local young people into work, the company made its biggest ever investment in apprentices last year.

Four, Stephanie Lamkin, Lauren Boddy, Tom Gaskell and Claire Duxbury, were hired by BCH’s housing services team as housing assistants and three, Sam Smith, Billy Dollin and Shaun Frankle were hired by the property services team as trade apprentices. The four housing services apprentices are learning housing management skills from assisting with and administrating lettings to assisting customers with complaints about noise or anti-social behaviour.

Claire, 25, from Marton, said: ‘Apprenticeships give you a really good chance to learn and gain a lot of experience on the job. I’m already getting experience that will help me to find a permanent job at the end of the apprenticeship – it’s nice to know I’m working towards something. As well as learning on the job I am also getting the qualifications to help me in the future.’

Stephanie, 23, from Cleveleys, added: ‘It’s a fantastic company to work for and to work your way up the jobs ladder. Hopefully thanks to this apprenticeship I will be able to get experience in lots of different areas that will help me in applying for jobs in the future.’

Meanwhile, the three property services apprentices take a more hands on role, learning their trade as repairs technicians, helping to fix problems at hundreds of residents’ homes.

Shaun Frankle, 24 and also from Marton, said: ‘I used to work in an office so it’s a big career change but I’m enjoying it. I’m seeing different places, different things and the people I work with are nice too!’. Sam Smith, 20, added: ‘I was looking for an apprenticeship so went on the internet and found this one. I started from fresh but have learnt lots of new skills since.’

BCH Chief Executive, Peter Jefferson, said: ‘The apprentices have been a real breath of fresh air and we’re delighted to be able to

provide opportunities to local young people.

Their commitment has been outstanding and they are really learning fast. Our key messages for National Apprentice Week are that we will continue to look for opportunities for apprentices and that we recommend that other local employers look to follow suit. The apprentices have made a real difference to our team.’

As well as helping the company in a practical sense, the young apprentices are also achieving qualifications on the job. The housing services apprentices have completed NVQ level 2 housing qualifications successfully and will now move on to their level 3 qualifications in housing practice.

Property services apprentices, meanwhile, are also completing diplomas in subjects including carpentry, plumbing and painting and decorating. Two other apprentices, Oliver Winter and Christopher Webster, are also making a big impact and have completed Site Carpentry Diploma Level 3 and NVQ Level 2 in Business Administration respectively.
